Will there be a Barsoom gaming/minis craze after the movie?
« on: January 10, 2012, 10:17:42 PM »
Obviously, a lot will depend on whether the movie is good or tanks, but has any company decided to take the risk and go after the merchandising?   If so, what are they doing?

Being a longtime Burroughs fan, I intend on finding an excuse for my VSF players to go to Mars at that time, and just do something a lot like Space 1889, but with Red Martians and Tharks, etc.  Figures I have: Peter Pig Green Men with Black Hat figs for PCs and villains, and some conversions from various pieces for Red, Black, etc., Martians.  For rules, I'll just add in OGL Mars.

I've been gaming Barsoom for years. It was one of the main inspirations for writing Fantastic Worlds in the first place. I really do hope the movie inspires more people to play. There are some great figures for it out there.

My real preference for Barsoom is Oed D&D

http://www.scribd.com/doc/39500443/Warriors-of-Mars

with a quick conversion of one of its many associated wargaming systems

http://www.scribd.com/doc/61403233/City-State-Warfare-Revised

for minis battles.

But, 3.5 is all I can get people to play in this area.  :(

Fantastic Worlds was what originally turned me on to Barsoom stuff.  As a direct result of that I bought a load of the suitable Bronze age miniatures back in '09 or so.

I have been holding off on painting them until I see the movie though.  While I dont necessarily want to slavishly copy the look of the film, I do think that it will be easier for me to get other playersinterested if the look of the figures is at least vaguely recognisable as the John Carter and co from the movie.

I am hoping to see lots of inspiring Barsoom projects on the LAF in 2012.

While I'm looking forward to the movie, when high-profile films launch the IP lawyers connected with the studios that produce them tend to be on high alert, so I tend to doubt that we will see much in the way of new product for Barsoom...  ::)

I personally hope the movie makes more fans and Martian Empires, Gaslight, Leviathans, Sword and Hive and of course When the Navy Walked get a big boost in sales and fans! I loved reading the books and the the Conflict on Mars book takes a lot from ERB's Barsoom while also borrowing from HG Wells and throwing in my own ideas of Martian culture. I know Martian Empires also does a fantastic job of giving a playable Barsoomian game and already have vehicles and other miniatures out for the period in 18mm. We are currently working on sculpting the birdmen like Gaal of Conflict of Mars.

Do you guys plan on adding anything to your line?  I'd love to see a white ape and a plant man.

That'd be a tough IP claim, considering that what they are doing is absolutely derivative of the books.

In any case, if I were jumping into this, I'd go for the look of the original book covers.  They'd have to be close enough to attract gamers, but still allow the cover of saying, "Hey, the studio made a work derivative of something that is out of copyright, well, so did I."

I think there would be a problem with IP if the figures take the look of the film design, otherwise they are inspired by out of print fiction, which is okay.,

We are concentrating on the Lizardmen release at the moment and I want to get the French out this year as well so that all published armies are supported.  After that I hope to add some speciality figures such as plantmen.

thanks

Mike
