As pointed out by a friend - at 1.13 in the cavalry charge everyone is left handed!

Looks good

When Joaquin Phoenix first appeared in Gladiator, I thought, my, he looks more like Napoleon than anyone else I've seen on screen except perhaps Brando. might have to give this a look. NAh, definitely give this a look.

Joaquin looked more like him when younger. Josephine was a few years older than Napoleon.

This isn't going to be in theaters right. This is on Apple + or is Apple + filming it for the big screen?

If I can keep telling myself it's for entertainment, not for accuracy, I think I will enjoy that.

Just watched the trailer....

Remind me, just out of curiosity, where can I get Front Rank napoleonics these days?

Cinema release in November then exclusively on Apple thereafter.

Front rank minis on Gripping Beast I think.

Who's playing Pauline Bonaparte?

It could only be Salma Hayek or Eva Green.  :P

Hayek or Greem…man, it would be hard to say which would be best.  tag team?

I expect that the man who did “The Duelists” is going to treat the subject well.

Perhaps a documentary about the husbandry of Welsh sheep?  lol

I actually paid top dollar to see this piece of, whatever. Fortunately, I was watching it in a boutique cinema and after an hour, in dire need of brain bleach, I was able to pop out to the foyer and buy a bottle of red and a straw: Unfortunately, a brain stain remains.

I just hope Spielberg's effort is going to be better - it would be hard not to be.

Watching it on a plane destroyed the few good things it offered in terms of photography, costumes and sets.  I found it was worth the 2£ I spent on it at a matinee—-in which a  free cup of tea and biscuits was included for the price of admission.  lol

Is he working on one?

Edit: I see, a 7-part TV series for HBO based on Kubrick's unfinished project. Hmm.

This has been kicking around for a while.  Most of what I have read makes it sound like it is happening but there is scant detail, which makes me think it probably isn't.  :'(

Are the uniforms at least plausible? I get hung up when a movie or series set in a “historical” period completely ignores what folks actually wore in the time period. That godawful King Arthur movie with Kiera Knightly, for example… I’m not sure that I am up for the masochism OG putting up with enormous plot holes if the visual spectacle doesn’t compensate a bit.

There are a few visual gems in the movie.  The uniforms and sets are great.  I think they did the Coup of 18 Brumaire well.  The battles are awful.  I don't understand how many film critics found the battles to be "epic".  None were particularly exciting (except, perhaps the battle at Toulon) and most completely ignored Napoleonic formations and tactics.

“ The uniforms and sets are great.” That’s  something, I suppose. The movie sounds like a lost opportunity, though. They had a massive budget, high profile cast, and then couldn’t be bothered to pay attention to the historical content. I don’t get that - it’s not like a crew of competent historical advisors would cost anything like what one of the star actors was paid. I can only assume that they didn’t think the audience is sophisticated enough to grasp a historically accurate plot. Given that film critics found the battles epic, maybe that’s justified.

The battle scenes were pretty dire. Some of the scuffles in Sharpe are more 'epic'!

Are you suggesting that Napoleonic battlefield tactics didn't consist of two crowds of men running at each other in disorganised mobs?

I haven’t seen King Arthur but I recall an interview with Kiera Knightly in which she discussed an idea she’d had for increasing her character’s historical accuracy, which wasn’t adopted. It entailed her being naked in a battle scene, apparently to distract her opponents and facilitate her killing them.. More research is needed in this area, I feel.

I still haven't seen the film. Some small bits I've seen have attracted my curiosity but I could not believe it was real, it seems so ridiculous.

OTOH I've seen comments on internet of some French ultra-nationalist Napoleon admirers, who seem utterly outraged, that could let me to have some indulgence.  lol lol

By the time it got to Waterloo, I thought it couldn't get any worse, I was wrong! The Little Man in the funny 'at gads about skewering people with his sabre. When he knocks off at snap time, there's a fat bloke stood behind him, gnashing his teeth and scowling. It's not till it all goes tits up that this clown bellows his only line...

"Come and see how a Marshal of France dies!"

My dear wife fell asleep during our line and only watch. She was the lucky one.

Wasn't Napoleon supposed to be possessed of great charisma? We got a petulant sulker with the charisma of wet cardboard.

If you haven't seen Napoleon yet do your self a favor and go watch Star Wars: The Phantom Menace instead. It is truly the more enjoyable experience.

We didn't quite get the massed cavalry charge down a steep hill into massed pikes that Perter Jackson gave us. That at least you could follow what was happening. Instead we got, god only knows what confused mess.
