I wanted some ruined fantasy city terrain. Its a staple trope, ruins are practical and atmospheric for gaming with and ruins can be mixed with my existing graveyard terrain and jungle terrain sets easily.
It has to be a project that has a beginning, a middle and an end. I didnt want to scratch build really, I wanted nice gaming pieces that look decent in photos. The more that I thought about it, the more that I realised that I wanted the terrain to look obviously fantasy, not just historical with bells and whistles.
Bells and whistles that generate lightning and power chords are acceptable however.
A list of appropriate kits was made. Over time they were purchased, two months ago they were assembled and they were painted over the last month or so.
The first step was to prep and paint some fairly vanilla pieces, to pad out the table. Landmarks could come later.
My first stop was the Citadel Ruins of Osgilliath terrain, which is pleasingly generic. I also picked up the Citadel Goblin Town set to use as gangways to connect the various buildings on more than one level, simply because I though that would be fun. I also picked up a set of Renedra fences to use as ladders.
I assembled the lot and painted it with simple drybrushing and zenith spraying techniques.

The blog post with some more info is HERE (https://sho3box.com/2017/07/14/the-lost-city-of-exactamundo-pt-1-osgiliath-ruins/) for anyone that fancies it.
More Exactamundo terrain next week with a bit of luck. Thanks for looking!
-
They look lovely, and the fences as ladders idea is just great - I forsee a surge in orders from Renedra as result!
Speaking of which, have you seen that Renedra do some small "scatter" ruins and some nice gothic-looking walls with spiked railings in them? I reckon they'd fit in rather nicely with your new Exactamundo terrain. :D
-
I've got weird internet here at the moment, so to echo what I may or may not have just said over on your blog - lovely idea! It might be a common trope but it's never doing to get tired and the use of the goblin terrain is brill. Cracking.

I dont think that I came up with that idea myself. Im sure that I saw it somewhere else, but science knows where.
It does work rather well though. I painted the lot on the sprue (along with the Goblin Town elements) which made them a straightforward way to get a lot done. My wooden ladder needs are covered for the forseeable future I think :)
Thanks for the encouragement gents :)

The Renedra ruins are very nice. I would like to add them at some point, but for now I'm content to finish off all of the fantasy ruins that I have before I invest in more. Having a "finished" project is unheard of in my house, so Im going to bask in that for a while before I pick up any more.

Thanks Jagganath.
Using the Goblin Town pieces to make a second elevation level has a lot of appeal to me for gaming reasons. Im not sure why, but it feels like a boon to cinematic side of those games, and therefore well worth doing.

Hoooray! I love it!
I want to make a fountain spewing rainbow coloured water!

Lovely painting :)
cheers

Nice work, mate.
I really like them.
:-* :-*
I have some Goblin Town stuff in a box somewhere that was supposed to do the same job.
Not having played with the scenery in a Mordheim-y way for some time (years!) put paid to that idea and they are languishing in the loft somewhere. Thanks for reminding me, I shall have to dig for them next time I go up there as I now have a new use for them....
:D
-
That is an excellent set up and a well-executed project. Simple yet effective. I'd steal it in a heartbeat had I any more room on my terrain shelves.

With anyone but you that would simply be idle chit chat DTV... :D
Lovely painting :)
Thanks James!

I painted the Goblin Town elements and the "ladders" on the sprue with quick spray/wash/drybrush techniques. It was pretty rapid. You chould be able to rattle it out pretty fast.

Thanks.
Yeah. Even though I am lucky enough to have quite a decent sized, dedicated mancave, terrain storage is certainly becoming a thing.
Terrain is too important for gaming to skimp on though.

I like the Age of Sigmar ruined terrain pieces that were released at the games inception. This one is probably my joint favourite along with the Realmgates.
I painted it in exactly the same manner as I painted the Osgilliath ruins shown earlier, to tie them in a bit. The Occulum is significantly more ostentatious though, and so is the first landmark or civil/religious building ruin in the set.

Brilliant! What a gem. I didn't even know it.
It needs an astrologer in deep thought.

Or a Lawnmower Man perhaps ;D
The next ruined piece of architectural arcana to get Exactamundan planning permission is this Dreadfire Portal from the Warhammer Storm of Magic releases a few years ago.
At the time I wasn't keen on those Arcane Fulcrums at all, but in the interim my appetite for the ridiculous seems to have increased, as I recently decided that I think that they are brilliant.
Midlife crisis manifests in myriad ways.

I give it a rating of eleven Tufnels (https://sho3box.files.wordpress.com/2017/07/spinaltapskull.jpg).

lol
A royal cosmopolitan cocktail of a scenery piece!
Ridiculous or not, I think you're building quite an impressive mortal realm. So far you've got a very vibrant death like Nagash purple ambience to it all.
I wonder if my khorne banana boat should be anchored at castle Greyskull... as I recall the whole thing is more or less just a skull gate.
Keep the cocktails coming!
-
WONDROUS TO BEHOLD! You have a BEAUTIFUL setting for your GORGEOUS miniature creations. That really is most inspiring. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Surely it should be worth 12 :D
cheers

You have done a cracking job on 'things'.
:-* :-*
Now please stop, as I am actually start to like the weird monstrosities.......
it must be my age.
;D ;D

The most mundane of the original Age of Sigmar release terrain pieces is the Ophidian Archway.
Of course, mundane in an AoS way still involves walls covered in snakes/dragons that can kill passers by.
I did enjoy painting it though: it felt like amateur dramatics/school play set design. It will work nicely as a landmark ruin, without being as full-on as some of the other architectural elements in this terrain set.
More photos and talk about supernatural snakes HERE (https://sho3box.com/2017/08/15/the-lost-city-of-exactamundo-pt-4-ophidian-archway/) for anyone inclined to take a look.
More Exactamundo terrain soon, thanks for looking!

I had half an eye on that piece as part of the (ruined) Great Library of Krappefortt when it first came out.
Not having played Mordheim for some time put an end to that idea swiftly enough.
I still rate it as (well over the top) bit of quality fantasy scenery, though.
I love what you have done with it!
:-* :-*
Oh, and just in case I have not mentioned it yet....
Exactamundo: A quality name. Simply brilliant!

Fantastisk og fedt!
We're not in Kansas anymore!
Why do I get the feeling that adding a yellow brick road wouldn't be completely out of place?
Are you going to keep adding to the mortal realms?
-
That is some nice scenery - and paint jobs. 8) 8) 8)
Are you getting those GW vines and trailing plants? The seem to fit the bill too.

I find that really interesting actually. I was drawn to the more extreme, more power metal high fantasy pieces, which the Archway is at the more mundane end of.
On the other hand, you saw it as being well suited to represent the ruins of one of the more extreme buildings in the low fantasy Mordheim setting.
It highlights the difference between the WHFB setting and the AoS setting rather well really.

Heh, it's a bit daft, but as the proprietor of Upsheet Creek I figured that it might appeal to you Mason :)
One day I will set up the lot with jungle terrain in and around it and it will actually look like my original vaguely Mesoamerican plan (which was originally intended to tie in with some slann/frogmen miniatures) and the name will make a little more thematic sense.
But the name has stuck. No going back now even if I wanted to. Which I don't.

Thanks Vanvlak!
The new GW vines and plants do look nice, but if I start adding those to the buildings, then I have to add them to all of them. Additionally, while it might look nice, the buildings as shown can be placed in different surroundings (desert, jungle, urban) without being uniquely associated with any of them.
I like that versatility over any additional realism that the vines etc might bring.
Plus its cheaper for me in terms of time and money, both of which are at a premium for me these days.

Worryingly, that doesn't sound like a bad idea lol
Are you going to keep adding to the mortal realms?
There are a few more GW terrain kits to come.
Inevitably I will add more I think, but I don't have many specific plans after getting a lot of ruins that are compatible with my existing woods, gaming mats, graveyard terrain etc finished.
The next thing that I want are some ruined carts and other street detritus that can be used to dress the streets in between the various Exactamundo buildings.
I'm open to suggestions for simple, time effective suggestions for suitable items.
-
Man, that's quite a piece. Nice touch with the brass looking elements, it helps to make them stand out. Cooler tan expected; in fact your recent works are making me look again these kits with new eyes... Shame on you! ;D

Good point - unless of course growth of stuff around one single magical building contrasts with all the other sterile ones! ;)
Incidentally, some aquarium plants are quite slinky and flexible, so could work too.
Now go and get more stuff done, I want to see more :D

Its funny, but I feel like its a particular compliment to be able to make people more interested in a nostalgic view of miniatures take a look at newer items simply by painting and presenting them a certain way.
Thanks Suber!

Im not short of aquarium jungle bits and pieces :)
Im certain that I can make it work well enough together. Ill aim to get photos of that within the next moth if I can.

OK, that IS a lot of aquarium plants :D

As one of the more, dare I say it, sensible Storm of Magic terrain pieces, the Eternity Stair is an oddity amongst oddities. I think that it turned out reasonably well all the same.
The blog post is here (https://sho3box.com/2017/09/20/the-lost-city-of-exactamundo-pt-5-eternity-stair/) if any of you would like more info.
I also played five games of AoS: Skirmish last weekend, so I took a few photos of the games in progress. They are only snaps, but some of the pieces from this thread can be seen in the shots.

Thanks for looking.
More of these to come soon.

I say 'Stop it! Damn you!'
You are really starting to turn my head with this nonsense.
>:D >:D >:D
I am really loving watch you add to this thread/project.
Some great stuff going on here.

The battlefields from the AoS skirmish tables look fabulous. Well done.

You are arguably public enemy #1 in that regard yourself Mason. Have a taste of your own medicine for a change! ;)

Thanks Doctor!
We had a lot of laughs playing that weekend. I'm really looking forward to another session.
Meanwhile, I completed this ridicufabulous thing:
BEHOLD THE BALEWIND VORTEX OF THE LOST CITY OF EXACTAMUNDO!!!!
Is it a good design? Is it a bad design? It's eye catching for certain, can't argue with that.
More info HERE (https://sho3box.com/2017/09/29/the-lost-city-of-exactamundo-pt-6-balewind-vortex/) for anyone inclined.
A seat on some skulls next time I reckon.
Thanks for looking.

A seat on some skulls next time I reckon.
Oh... do you really... well it isn't a seat on some skulls YOU IDIOT!
It's Arcane Ruins in fact, which is really a great kit. I want to get more, which is irrational, but they are soooo versatile.
I also used the ruins to quickly upgrade Mushrööm Klöwds stage show:

I'm going to keep howling into the ether here regardless, as the project is nearly complete.
Today it's the Dragonfate Dais.
I quite like this kit, the levitation effect is fun. It's probably my favourite of the first batch of AoS terrain.

This lost city is looking great. I blow hot and cold about the Warhammer terrain, but yours is very effective.
-
How could I have missed this thread? Really - everything is fantastic, in particular the scenery pieces.
