Like the topic says, the goblins are (almost) here

They are... However I would like to be able to actually see the metal ones?! Seems to be no images for them at the moment?

I'm not going to get these, but I must say they do look great - refreshing to see orcs that differ from the usual GW clones. Can't wait to see what some of the brush-boffins on here do with them  :D

The images of the metal orcs are on the army deals in the link provided above

As majorsmith says, there are images here: http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=11303 (http://www.northstarfigures.com/prod.php?prod=11303)

But it is odd that they have images of the models, but havent uploaded them to the relevant model entries on the webshop. It would be nice to know which goblin boss/shaman is which :)

Regardless, I'll be ordering some of these. They'll be great for anything from SoBH to Dragon Rampant. I could see GWs Fell Wargs working as mounts for them and maybe GWs Hobbit Goblins as smaller mishappen critters. I just need to find some nice trolls.

Interestingly, an additional goblin seems to exist: the goblin army deal shows 6 different unpainted figures, but the free model that's part of the goblin brigade deal is yet another goblin champion, although it ("Shabu") should be the same in both...

Thanks for the link.

Coenus, I think the other Goblin you mention about is the maquette that is only available with the current preorder deals?

Never mind, it's the one with the shield second from the left - looked quite different from the different angle! (And for some reason I named him the Great Goblin.)

Had to be done, had to be done ... if there's one thing this household lacks, it's 28mm orcs (ahem!).

Thirty-one goblins for twenty quid is very hard to argue with. And I think the freebie figure is by far the best of the metal ones.

I'm already envisaging making a complete HotT army from the box: four spear elements, two shooters, four warbands and a (kitbashed) magician - 31 figures exactly!

Waited with the Dwarves until it was too late, but that pre-order exclusive metal Goblin is indeed just too good. And now they also have a deal with both the Dwarves and the Goblins. That is horribly tempting (although I may then want to add a few of the metal Goblins, and some metal Dwarves if getting those as well...)

Some rather good banner and shield designs available for both goblins and dwarfs also.

Yes. I noticed the transfers also. At 5 pounds though I didn't go for them.
I ordered a pack of gobbys and the 2 command packs. Nice little skrimish group from that lot.

The offer ends on 6 December, so I reckon so. I did the Rogue Stars one last year; if memory serves, that came earlier than expected.

From posts I saw on various Facebook pages, the Dwarves arrived very quickly after the pre-order period if I'm not mistaken.

North Star have said they can't guarantee orders by Christmas and that although they're aiming to start shipping on the 6th they are also aware that unforeseen problems might delay the whole process and would prefer not to make promises they might not be able to keep.

FYI: Box cover art by Ralph Horsley - Sculpt by Michael Anderson.

So now you know why they have that old school vibe.  lol

The metal goblins/orcs are by Mark Copplestone. And they look exactly as I always hoped they would if Copplestone ever should do orcs. The helmets are very similar to the old Grenadier half-orc helmets.

I'm just in awe. It's the kind of orcs I always wanted.
I just really hope they eventually will do the war-orcs Copplestone promised us over a decade ago.

I think I will be in for a box and the metals.  They look like they would go well with the Thunderbolt Mountain goblins and a few warg riders might go well with these (before they close :'( :'( :'()

Personally, not that impressed with the metal goblins, too blocky for my taste. The exception being the original maquette figure by Anderson. If they hired him as their sculptor of metals I would almost certainly buy those. I agree that the Tom Meier (Thunderbolt Mountain) stuff would probably be a good match.

I agree with you Nord- Those Copplestone metals look a bit crude to me. (sorry Mr Copplestone, I like a lot of your other stuff. These are just not my cup of tea)

I really like the maquette by Anderson though.
In all honesty I probably only just put my preorder in to get that model!! I'm interested to have a play around with the plastics though. I wonder if some of the bits from the awful mantic orcs might work with them? I have some somewhere and it would be good to finally make use of them!!

Does anybody with experience of Northstar preorders know if the money comes out upfront or at the point of dispatch? It would be good to know, it is that time of the year when money 'disappears' at an alarming rate after all!!

Funnily enough the maquette model is the standout for me too. I find myself really wanting that figure! The shoulders slightly put me off the plastics though that's a bit of a trade off with the flexibility of the sprues I suppose.

They are BEAUTIFUL miniatures, but they look more like Grenadier style Orcs than Goblins to me. The BEST OF LUCK with the preorder!

They remind me slightly of the old Nick Lund Chronicle orcs in style.

I have preordered a box.
Now just have to paint them. lol

I'm so stoked about these goblins (or Orcs, as I'll be calling them).

Due to limited hobby time I only ordered a single box, but if they're as good as I hope, I'll pick up a couple more in the future.

So far I'm thinking 6 swordsmen, 6 spearmen, 6 archers and 6 that I'll try to mount on Fell Wargs. That leaves 6 goblins that I'd like to arm differently.
There's enough axes and clubs in the box and I could modify the spears to be thrown spears or javelins, but I'd like more weapon options.

Any suggestions plastic kits that would be worth picking up mainly for bits?

Synonyms!  ;)

I imagine most of the Frostgrave sprues will work. I'm going to try the barbarian and soldier sprues to make Isengard Uruk-hai (long bows and short, broad-bladed swords). If I remember correctly, the dwarf bodies are supposed to work with various Frostgrave arms, so I imagine that will hold true with the goblins. I think some of the gnoll arms could provide good options too: two-handed axes and swords, for example.

The head/neck arrangements of the goblins and gnolls are different from the others, but half-orcs ("horrible" men with "goblin faces") could be another interesting product of some sprue-switching.

You can get individual Frostgrave sprues fairly reasonably on eBay.

I've managed to use pretty much all the various plastic heads on most of the torsos; you have to settle for heads looking to the side in some cases.

Not tried the Gnoll heads elsewhere though.

I'm certainly thinking of trying some man-orc kit bashes with the rest of the frostgrave stuff

Looks like I'll be picking up a sprue from each frostgrave kit then, thanks for the suggestions :)

Regarding Orcs and Goblins being synonyms, that sounds rather tolkienesque.

I need a name to seperate the Oathmark models from the smaller goblins that I'll be building to complement them and years of DnD and GW brainwashing has lead me to use Orc for the larger greenskins* and Goblin for the smaller ones.

*greenskins is probably wrong too, according to Tolkien  :)

Mine will be Orcs too (I think the Goblin tag has just been put there to make @Hobgoblin buy them!  ;)

...and to heavily hint at their old skool Tolkien vibe...

I believe Northstar sell separate sprues of their frostgrave plastics too (I think)

In D&D mode I think of Orcs and goblins as different; in Tolkien terms they mean more or less the same thing (I refer you to the ongoing discussion elsewhere here between m'learned friends).

I guess "snaga" is a pretty good term for the smaller Orcs. I mean goblins. Errrrr....minions.

Elves probably need another year before they are available.
As far as I recall, there is only one "prototype" sculpt so far.

I might have painted one maybe two of the Dwarves or Goblins by then.

one or two mind - not 2 of each at the rate I get to paint lol

So that time frame is just fine for by me...

Agree, excellent service yet again from northstar.

I built a couple of trial goblins earlier.

I think static poses are going to be the most successful (a bit like the dwarves). Also the heads sit on protruding bobbles to give them the properly hunched look; this works well, but it means they mostly will have to look more or less straight ahead to avoid looking unnatural. But I daresay this could be fixed with some minor surgery.

Anyway, here they are:

Thanks for the sample pics, I got the notice today that my goblins have shipped so I am pumped.   Also I am in the US, and have lots of leftovers from Frostgrave soldier, gnoll, and crewman sprues if anyone wants to do some swapping to make half-orcs.   I also have some Wargames Factory orc sprues, I am curious to see if those arms will fit.   I have some Gripping Beast, Warlord, and Fireforge historicals but I have noticed they are a little thin compared to the Frostgrave human models, but maybe they will work on these since they may be slightly smaller than humans.

No problem, I'll try to post some comparisons later.

They're about a head shorter than the average Perry, I think, which is about what it should be for Tolkien orcs...

Look on the bright side, there's at least one single piece metal figure in there ;)
Title: Re: Oathmark goblins available for preorder!
Post by: Severian on December 07, 2017, 11:41:25 AM
OK, here are a couple of quick comparison shots.

First, a goblin flanked by two metal Perry men-at-arms (sorry, none of my Perry plastics were to hand, but they're the same height). I've just noticed that the left hand Perry is actually blu-tacked to the coin rather than glued, which might add say half a mm to him. He and the goblin are on coins, the r-h Perry on 2mm mdf.

Second, various orcs/goblins: left to right, Essex, Citadel, Oathmark, Ral Partha, Alternative Armies.

Hope this helps!

Title: Re: Oathmark goblins available for preorder!
Post by: Elbows on December 07, 2017, 04:35:06 PM
Yep, they're definitely quite small - shame since I was actually wanting to use them as non-massive Orcs.  Will sell them on if they're too small to paint.  If paintable (with my eyes) I'll keep them as proper goblins most likely.  They are much smaller than I anticipated considering how slight Perry plastics are.

Oh well, still on the hunt for useful Orcs then.

Actually I like them at that size - they will work well with LOTR
Title: Re: Oathmark goblins available for preorder!
Post by: Cubs on December 08, 2017, 01:27:06 PM
It's interesting that when they saw the photos, a lot of people said they weren't goblins, they were orcs.

Now they've seen them compared to other models, they're saying they're not orcs, they must be goblins, so they're too small!

Northstar have been pretty vocal in pointing out they're Tolkien-esque goblins/orcs as opposed to Warhammer goblins or Warhammer orcs. Maybe it's more to do with proportions than actual height. They certainly have a more 'realistic' smaller head, for example, in line with the GW LOTR models. I guess it shows you can't please all of the people.
