Title: Rebuilding Quebrada del Toro
Post by: Gutbukkit on 19 November 2017, 10:43:56 PM
Hi folks. It’s been a long time since I’ve posted here. Returning to the Old West once again, this time is a new phase. My old town will be retired and a new and better one built with what I’ve learnt over the years. New minis will also be painted, mostly Knuckleduster’s amazing line of Wild West characters, some of the best minis around for this period.

To kick things off I begin again with a Mexican Bandito, which is fitting as Banditos were the very first Old West minis I painted 7 years ago. The paint scheme was heavily inspired (read: completely ripped off) by Dazler269’s awesome paint jobs (found here http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=98071.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=98071.0))

Lovely brush work. Are the poncho tassles done with a dark wash and a highlight of the initial colour? It's a very effective finish.

Thanks everyone. More on the way, hopefully soon.

I base coat everything before giving the model an all over wash of Agrax Earthshade. Everything then gets highlighted starting with the base colour then a couple of lighter tones. So in short, yep, the tassels are done using a wash and a highlight.

A few months of distractions elsewhere in the hobby and the madness of the holidays out of the way, and I’m back in the Old West, my happy place lol.

Another Knuckleduster Bandito. Not quite as elaborate as the first but I’m pleased with the result nevertheless. He kinda reminded me of Emiliano Zapata, so I based his colour scheme off of a colourised photo of the revolutionary.

As you can probably tell by how infrequently I update this thread, I am really bad at staying focused on a project. To illustrate my point here is the main construction of a new building for the new town finished yesterday (just need to paint it); I started building it a year ago but abandoned it half way through. Glad to finally be able to get to stage where I can paint it.

Such a fine job on a "he" poncho.  Can we now see a "she" poncho?!   lol

Building looksreally good - I like the multi level roofs and the nooks and corners. Plenty of "playability" on the table.

Thanks. I didn’t want the hassle of building an interior so I made sure the whole building had bits of interest to allow for cover and elevation. The slopes roof is shallow enough of an angle to allow models to be placed without fear of falling and the flat roof adds another playable area, and with some scatter terrain in the form of crates placed behind the false front, shooters can snipe from behind cover. I hope to build my other buildings with similar ideas to make them more than just set dressing and line of site blockers.

I finally got the building I started making two years ago painted. Had I stuck it out and persevered from start to finish I could’ve completed it in a few days of casual hobbying. Sometimes though a project is only better by leaving it and coming back to it later, having learned all sorts and gained inspiration in the interim.

Now, THAT looks like the Old West I move through daily.  There are many an old barn here about that have just that look.  Top notch.

My only complaint is you are already late with your tutorial on how you did that!    lol  All you have to do is get busy and rectify that oversight with your next building.  Hop to it, sir, hop to it!   :D

A Sunday well spent: watching westerns and painting miniatures.
I’ve only painted a few Knuckleduster Miniatures in the past couple of years, but they’ve certainly become my favourite.

Love seeing this come together.  Also glad to see a Knuckleduster convert - they're head and shoulders above anything else available right now.  Clean, wonderful minis.
