Phil and I have started a joint project to build armies for the Italian Wars. Phil chose Florence for his army and I chose the Papal States for mine. I’ll post my progress on this thread periodically. This is my first base of pike and the eighth base I’ve completed so far. The figures are by TAG.

That's a fine looking base of miniatures.

They look splendid David :-*

Very nice indeed. :-* :-* Can't wait to see more.

Some TAG mounted crossbowmen.
Not much interest by way of reply though to justify the effort of posting.
-
A very nice start - I like the flags too (as someone who's also started an Italian Wars army in 28mm, I will plunder this thread!).

Nice to see your inner Catholic emerging! :-*

Really like the yellow you painted on your crossbowmen.
Hard color to get right.
Excellent start on your army.
How many figures to you plan for your army?
-
Ooh you’re crossbowmen are particularly nice. Liking the pavises.

Thanks for those kind words of encouragement.
That’s a difficult question to answer though about figures. Why? Well, Phil and I set out jointly on this project intending that each base will be a unit, figures on the base are largely representative in that case. All bases will be 100mm wide and most 50mm deep, with pikes at 100mm. We shall use a mash up of Neil Thomas’ rules ~ Ancient & Medieval and Pike & Shotte ~ together with our own additions. In this case an ‘army’ can be as few as 8 bases. We are aiming at about 16 initially. I have finished 12 bases so far and Phil about 3. When we can muster 20 or so bases between us we will give a game a go.
-
Lovely work, always enjoy seeing Italian Wars projects - one day I will follow in the dust of your horses and start one myself!
-
Very colourful. They work a treat.
But don’t tell me those are Perry plastic pavises... :o
Is this the first tiny hairline crack in the mighty obdurate dam? lol

Don’t fret Richard, the pavise are metal! Glad you approve of my efforts though.

Love the new cavalry.
Very colorful.

Excellent painting on those Elmetti. :-*
-
Awesome, CONGRATULATIONS!!! :-* :-* :-*
-
A riot of colour!
Hats off to Mr. Bickley. I was going through the broken mess that is the Colonial Adventures list of battle reports the other day and noticed just how many of them were by Mr. B (and unlike mine, the pictures on his are still working). I know you sometimes talk of giving up on LAF, but it will be a duller place if you ever do. Your work is valued, even if sometimes we forget to post a reply saying so.
-
Thanks Plynkes and others of course. I get easily discouraged as an average painter and value feedback like that. My painting skills are moderate really, but I am reinvigorated by this Italian Wars project, the figures are a joy and there are no uniforms to worry over!
-
Warlord Games has some nice figures for the period, specially civilians for the village that is going to be pillaged by your troops:

An idea of what the force may look like on the table using figures from different manufacturers: pike block from TAG; handgunners from Front Rank; command figures from Casting Room Miniatures.
-
It's all coming together rather well Dave. :)
I understand your frustration with the side-shootin' mtd crossbows. There really is no reason why they can't have been posed shooting forwards for 'wargames purposes', even if they are possibly depicted in a 'realistic' fashion for a quicker getaway.
-
I really like the basing of your figures.
Large stands look cool.
I have been thinking of doing that in ancients
using To the Strongest rules.

Great work David :)

Very nice! I recently got those same Foundry mantlets for my artillery, I'm looking forward to painting them up. Where are the buckets and other equipment from, TAG?

Fantastic thread! :o :o :o Nice find using the FR gunners. What make is the sword wielding fellow in the above picture?
-
To answer the questions:-
1. Rules?
We shall use a mash up of Neil Thomas’ rules ~ Ancient & Medieval and Pike & Shotte ~ together with our own additions. In this case an ‘army’ can be as few as 8 bases.
2. The figure in question.
From a now defunct range for The Orc’s Nest in London. I got it via a second hand figure stand at Wargamer because it was sculpted by Matt.
-
Fantastic stuff David, I'm a big fan of Neil Thomas's rules as well, can't wait to see them in action :)

Wonderful stuff.
I've been painting that same horse you have Cesare Borgia sitting on this week, though with a different figure mounted on it. With all those tassels and wotnot it was a right bloody pain. Lots of mistakes and retouchings. So respect. :)

Thanks Plynkes! The horse in question was a real challenge in white, more than once I wished I’d chosen a bay. Next, a base of Italian spearman I’ve just finished ~

Not the best of pictures I know, but that’s everything to date. Please note the buildings are in a state of unfinishedness!
-
Lovely! Is there to be more, for a big old mass-battle, or is this to be a more skirmishy sort of affair?
Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing you and Phil lock horns.
-
This project is building up nicely. Love the group shot :)
-

Neil Thomas’s rules. Each base a unit. I have six more bases to go currently when I finish the crossbowmen im working on.

Like the crossbowmen very much, David :)
On the whole though, I'm not quite sold on the sculpting for this TAG range. I think they're still being done by Nick Collier, who used to be one of my favourite sculptors when he produced those brilliant ECW ranges for Bicorne and Renegade, and some of his earlier work for TAG's renaissance range. But there's something about some of these more recent figures (not all) that just doesn't look quite right to me... The heads are a bit too big, the legs a wee bit bandy, the poses a bit wooden... Can't quite put my finger on it.
Anyway, it doesn't detract from your painting and impressively rapid progress with the army. Just an eye of the beholder thing I guess... :)

Great project David!
Can you please let me know what range the man of god in the red robe is from? The pope is Antediluvian, the one with the book seems to be Perry miniatures but I can not find the one with the red robe.
Many thanks!

From the neck down he is by Perry Minis, same set as the priest with Bible and two mounted clerics, from the neck up he is unique, my head sculpted by my son Matt & cast by Trevor Dixon.

Very nice additions to your army.

Not that anyone’s interested it seems...
-
More nice work,TAG minis ?
-
Oh, I'm interested - as I'm currently prepping for a similar project. Nice flags.
-
Well, it's sometimes hard to think of something fresh to say about every single new entry in an ongoing thread like this, but it doesn't mean we aren't interested (that's why, unlike most of my contemporaries, I approve of the concept of the "Like" button, as you can express interest and approval when you don't actually have anything in particular to say).
Anyway, coming along nicely. Don't stop.
-
Those banners are a delight ! How about showing us the base in that top picutre from the side ?
-
Is the “Champion” an Essex Miniatures Gendarme? He s got a nice flag there! Your work?

The last new figures added to my Italian Wars project for a while, a Landsknecht pike block ~

A fuller account of the unit is on my blog.
There’ll be no new additions for a few weeks now as I’m scheduled for a hip replacement operation on Friday. I hope fellow LAFers will keep me in their thoughts.
-
Good luck with the op, David. Hope you are able to be back at it as soon as possible.
-
All the best from me too - that last unit's looking pretty good.
-
Hip is not the word I would have immediately associated with you ;)
Hope it goes well. I’m sure you can take your paints, brushes and a few figures into hospital with you for a spot of recuperative therapy :)
-
It's a constant joy seeing your new additions to this Project. I hope the op goes smoothly!
-
Nice painting on those landskneckts.
-
Best of luck - we all hope everything goes well and you get a good result.
And loved your Landsknecht command bloc.
-
I've been loving watching your army grow, the flags are fantastic, the colours inthe minis so vibrant and effective, fabulous stuff! :)
Good luck with the op to.
-
Great thread, lovely figures.
Hope the op goes well and just think of all that recovery time you'll have to paint!

Excellent placement of the figures- the officers at the front really look like they are engaged in conversation. Well done.

Nice! Yes, a real old conflab going on. About to turn into an argument perhaps. The guy drawing his sword is a pretty nice figure too.
Good to see you back at it after your op, David.

Nice write up and quite a spectacle too! :)
-
Very nice looking project, following with interest as my next project may be 15mm Italian Wars, expanding my armies, especially now Vanexia have been bought by Lancashire Games and Blue Moon have released their range
-
You are doing an exceptional job!
Each one of your bases is a unique gem!
Please keep posting!
-
Love the look of the game.
Looks like you like the rules.
What caused the Gendarmes to sit in place most of the game?
My guess, command and control issues.
-
What a riot of color ! Thanks for posting this.

Top notch! :o

Progress on my everlasting bl**dy Landsknecht pike block ~

Cool! I do like those irregularly-shaped bases. If you suggested that idea to me without showing them to me, I think I would say "no thanks, that sounds terrible" but I think they actually look really good.

Well done.
They will add a lot to your games.

Woooooo! Three replies, thank you, it must be my birthday! I bought more MDF building blanks from Warbases at Claymore, along with a splendid tower from Charlie Foxtrot. Combined with an order from Sally Forth these will be the basis of a Palazzo for my Borgias.

They will look resplendent with your other buildings David.
Look forward to seeing them completed.

I went to your blog and looked over all your posts.
What an excellent force you have painted over these many months.
I am very impressed that you have continued to paint the same period
for so many months.
I find that after about two months on the same army I burn out.
Well done David, well done.

A difficult and painful task, but the results are rewarding!

Edit - also worth visiting your blog, so many nicely painted miniatures.
-
Really nice additions to the collection :)
-
Lovely additions David.
-
Especially the command stands, are a real catch-eye! Very well done!
-
Yeah the command stands look really great!
-
Lovely work! :)
-
Wow, some great new stuff.
Really like the mounted command stands.

Ditto. Especially the flags. :-* :-*

Great work as usual, this has become one of my favourite threads.

The whole effort to date in action here in GHQ ~

Splendid! Fantastic terrain and minis! :-*
-
What a great screen-saver that last picture would make !
-
Wonderful terrain and miniatures. A splendid end to the project. Or is it?? :-* :-*

This is great to see this project on the table, really looks very smart and appealing.
Do you have any close up pics of your Italian infantry, the ones that use the Perry 1450-1500 metals? The 'heavy infantry' with poleaxes, plus the metal handgunners and crossbowmen. I'd love to take a closer look, as I've go those ones myself and am puzzling over how best to do them as a unit.

Wonderful collection David, well done.
Best wishes,
Helen

Sadly I have none of the figures you mention in the post, Phil has more Perry Miniatures. On an unrelated note I have two more early Landsknecht pike blocks from TAG in the Lead Pimple and a further Command Stand of two figures from Bicorne. I got a great bargain at Penkridge Table Top Sale last Sunday, a number of Ian Weekly Battleground hard foam tent and marquees for £10. I’m busy rebasing and repainting these at the mo.

A small camp scene added ~

Nice nice 👍

Great looking camp scene.
Well done.
-
Nice looking camp scene? What's cooking in the pot?
-
Love the Camp. Is that a re-purposed TAG not-Blackadder in the background ?

Thanks! Of course you are right, it is the TAG set of three Black Adder- like figures. I got a free Henry VIII with them but can’t think how to repurpose him yet.

Sorry for not commenting lately, I've had a rather trying few months, health-wise. But I am right glad to see this project is still moving forward.
-
Great efforts - not Baldric looks particularly good. You can tell it's Baldric because he appears to have lit the fire in the cooking pot rather than under it. Shouldn't the smoke be coming from below the pot rather than from the pot itself?

Steam not smoke! It’s early Renaissance smokeless fuel! 😉

Wow, very impressive and a period I'm fond of. :-*
-
An additional Command Stand, Bicorne Miniatures, formerly Connoisseur I believe ~
-
Nice work David on the latest contributions to the collection.
Best wishes,
Helen

Thanks to all who visited or commented here or on my blog. If you are interested the whole project features in this month’s Wargames Illustrated.

Fabulous stuff,
a period I do enjoy, although I play early period so I can do the mad war also using impetus.
Cheers
