Here you can find the next days some renders for a fantasy roman army.
Its the second try and hopefully you like some of the designs ;-)
-
The standard legionary
-
W.I.P of a character miniature
-
Standard bearers
-
Ballista
-
Praetorian with face mask
-
Head set and optio add on
-
Auxiliary
-
Looks very promising.
Heroic proportions, good for WH Fantasy!
What are your plans? Are you just designing them and somebody else will produce them?
-
Hi Agis
I have send you a private message in german..
My english is to bad to explain it.
I am only the man with the ideas and I have the luck, to work together with one of in my eyes best sculptor of fantasy miniatures, Andrea Tarabella, who work normally for ragging heroes.
-
Gladiator
-
I do hope these get produced. I have the urge for another Dragon Rampant army now :P
-
Praetorian with face mask
I think it all looks great! I assume some of them will be posed more dynamically at a later stage, which would improve the gladiator, especially. Also nice with some cheesecake, for those who enjoy that.
If I may criticise one thing, it would be the position of this mask in relation to the rest of the helmet. I feel like it might as well be a stoic face right now. If the mask was further out, almost in line with the side plates, it may look more like a mask. Just my 2c, though.
-
Hopefully these get produced in some form. I really like them. I'd like to see them showing a bit more leg (Archer in particular). Short tunics and bare thights is just very Roman looking to me.
I echo the hope that they are posed dynamically.
-
Gladiator
If you could pop this guy out toot sweet that would be great; I need a pit fighter for my Mordheim warband. 8)
-
Mobile ballista ;-)
-
Priestess
-
These look cool, I especially like the mounted ballista.
-
Cornicen with fantasy Cornu ;-)
-
Female Character part 2
-
Is this lady a Roman or another project?
-
She is a single character to fight along the romans ;-)
-
When can we buy these?
Where can we buy these?
I want to buy all of these.
:D :D :D
-
Tribun/legat
-
Heavy infantry with war hammers...(really fantasy) ;-)
-
Gladiatrix
-
You issue the troops on a plastic sprue and I'll buy a whole lot of them.
-
No money for plastic....sorry...they will be in resin....
-
No money for plastic....sorry...they will be in resin....
Oh ... come on! ... too bad :'(
-
Do you know the costs of such an ammount of injection moulds? :)
I am only a normal tabletop and miniature fan ;), no company...
The cost for sculpting is ca 500 Euro per normal infantry miniature....
Added will be costs af printing, mould making, casting etc...
;) ;) ;)
Not shure if I can release all the miniatures....
-
Really great additions, I especially like the female sculpts!
I want to buy some!!! ;)
-
Those are stunning.
Well done.
My only observation,
I would research Roman mythology and perhaps use these to create your ‘beasts’
Whilst a very nice model, the bolt thrower mounted on the monster looks out of place? Almost Games Workshop style?
I think giant Wolves may have worked better? For example.
Also a war elephant of sorts may look cool. They were used in the arena and even came as far as Britain in the invasion.
Just enough historical bias, to go a bit crazy!
I would definitely buy into this collection, even in Resin!
It is marvellous.
Thank you.
-
Hi VonMoltke,
You should have a look into patreon, or maybe even kickstarter. It might be worth a look. People are easily able to print miniatures nowadays, so you could probably hit enough potential customer easily that way, and be paid a fair price for your work.
-
Thank you all, very good ideas.
I will think about.
-
get some resin painted up and do a kickstarter. That should fund the mold cost for plastic. These would do really well on there. I'd back them! Resin too.
-
Fantasy african Warrior.
My description nubian was wrong....because I decide a Zulu equipment Mix.
-
;-)
-
Perhaps give the Nubian the option of a Corinthian helmet?
-
That's a fantasy Zulu, not a Nubian unfortunately. I agree with the comments about the monster, doesn't look right for a fantasy version of a historical army. A fantasy version of a real world animal would fit much better, or just a cool ballista without the mount. Also the SJW in me is smarting a bit at the rather old fashioned depiction of women.
Even with those niggles though, I really like your work and overall take on the idea. I'd definitely be interested in buying some, especially the character pieces. They would fit very nicely into my Gloranthan collection.
-
Indeed its Zulu style....I know it. Luck its fantasy and all is possible, ;)
-
New face expression variants
-
New pilum pose.
The forearms of the legionaries are ball joint connections, so you can do different angles. Additional there are two shield and weapon arm basic angles, so that there are some additional possibilities. The standard weapon poses have also a ball joint connection system for the hands, so it allow turning also of the the hands.
-
Are these 28mm or 32mm and gaunt or chunky heroic sized? Nowhere is it mentioned about proportions...
Why a preference for grimacing faces? The expression screams painful bowel movement... lol
I think a quadruped would be better for porting a ballista than a knuckle walker.
I don't care about SJWs and I know it's fantasy, but do the women have to look like extras from Gladiator Eroticus? ;)
-
I think the multi pose arms are a good idea.
The under arm pilum pose illustrated above is just not right, even in fantasy. The pilum was a one shot throwing spear, never used in thrusting mode! Erm, if you get what I mean :o
Looking forward to ordering these.
-
these are looking great. Keep them coming... my wallet is open when you are ready.

Pila could be used as regular spears...

I stand corrected lol
First time I’ve seen that historical pose!

To the subject scale.
There are enough 28/30 mm mm romans like Victrix and Aventine miniatures ;-)
I am an old man, and I like to paint bigger miniatures.
They are in the GW stormcast eternal scale, what allowed much more details and the balljoint arm variants.
So all in all more 38 mm feet to eye level.
They can also be used as 40 mm for someone who likes this scale...
-
Those are stunning.

You are right....
I must think in the future for fantasy mount cavalry....
What do you think?
Hippogryphs?
Lions?
May be someone has a good idea...
-
I stand corrected lol
First time I’ve seen that historical pose!
It's not the best representation of Arrian's contra Alan formation, but it gets the point across, though I think it'd look better with oval scuta.
Roman pikeman and spearman (https://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat/showthread.php?tid=18905)
Arrian's Array against the Alans (http://members.tripod.com/~S_van_Dorst/Ancient_Warfare/Rome/Sources/ektaxis.html#T6)
And the front four ranks of the formation must be of spearmen, whose spearpoints end in thin iron shanks. And the foremost of them should hold them at the ready, in order that when the enemies near them, they can thrust the ironpoints of the spears at the breast of the horses in particular. Those standing in second, third an fourth rank of the formation must hold their spears ready for thrusting if possible, wounding the horses and killing the horsemen and put the rider out of action with the spear stuck in their heavy body armour and the iron point bent because of the softness.
The legionary battle line (http://members.tripod.com/~S_van_Dorst/Ancient_Warfare/Rome/Sources/ektaxis.html#C6)
The kontos described here appears to be the pilum, the classic heavy javelin of the legionary heavy infantry with its bendable iron shank, rather than the two handed cavalry spear used by the heavy cavalry contarii. A generally applied Greek vocabulary for translation of Latin terminology does not seem to have been adopted despite centuries of contact with the Roman army. The word hyssos was used by several Greek authors, most notably Polybius, as the Greek term for pilum, while Flavius Josephus employed the word xyston. The use of the pilum as a stabbing weapon rather than a javelin is not unique: Caesar’s legionaries had done the same during the siege of Alesia according to the De bello Gallico. The description of the main battle formation lacks some details that could shed light on the exact dispositions of the subunits.
-
The first miniatures has arrive ......if someone is interested to paint one , than please private message me. I will send you one legionary miniature set with gladius. But only if you will show here pictures of the painted miniature ;-)
-
very nice!
I would like that ballista beast in 15mm, which is my fantasy mass battle scale
-
I just sent a PM, but my private messages doesn't show sent items for some reason. Let me know if you received it.
-
@Duff
I get it ;-)
-
These are beautiful! I've been wishing for something like these for ages. I'm not a great painter but I'd be happy to have a go.
-
VonMoltke was kind enough to send my some samples and I was blown away by the sheer quality of the miniatures.
The minis are big chunky multipart resin that are full of character and conversion options, different heads weapon options etc. I chose amore traditional outfit for my 1st mini, gladius and shield plus helmet.
The base is a GW 32 mm base since the mini is REALLY BIG. You can see a comparison picture further down. To enhance the base I used some Milliput and the nice Rolling Pin ROMAN. Great effect!
The mini was based in Citadel Chaos black. After that some Citadel Ironbreaker for all the metal parts, Nuln Oil shade, again some Ironbreaker - done. Mephistion Red for the tunic and shield. Carroburg Crimson Shade and again some Red for some highlights. Skin is AV 72.100 Rosy Flesh, a Citadel Reikland Fleshshade, and again Rosy Skin with mixed in white for the flesh highlights. The gold is done all with citadel colours, Gehenna Gold, Agrax earthshade, again Gehenna Gold and finally some Auric gold with mixed in silver. All brown parts are AV Burnt Umber and AV flat earth highlights.
The mini is NOT fitting to any historical Roman range that I know of since the mini is around 42 mm high! See the comparison picture below. Even a Primaris Marine is dwarfed! IMO no problem since the mini line is obviously not aiming at any established setting or genre.

Cracking job Agis and a lovely looking mini.
-
Fantastic job :-*
I think the size is rather cool and painting should be fun.
They will be perfect for skirmish or even role playing games 8)
Can’t wait to get my hands on them!
-
Thanks folks, these minis are indeed something very good!

About the size, 42mm is from feet to top of helmet.
Feet to eye is around 38mm!
-
@Agis
Absolut awesome!
Great painting and basing.
They can be used as stormcast eternals alternate, may be I write a houserule set for them.
Also will they in scale compare to the new conquest- last argument of kings 40 mm range ;-)
-
The newest additions for the range are:
Female slave revolt fighter
Female citizen with different weapons defending the town
Former legionary military old male veteran
-
Courtesy of VonMoltke I also had the privilege of getting a few sample figures. I can only second Agis’ comments. The quality is outstanding!
I’m a less neat painter than Agis so my version looks a bit more grimy and battle worn:
(https://i.ibb.co/X2TQPr1/9041-DD1-B-C7-BD-4-C40-B2-B7-E95-FCCC6-CCAD.jpg) (https://ibb.co/JBP1TwV)
Straight away I was reminded of this series of fantasy novels:

I’m already planning on re-fighting some of the battles! I just need to convince VonMoltke to print me an Elf as Stiger’s sidekick Eli 8)
-
The details and graphic-ness of the models look fantastic, but they just look like shop mannequins rather than fighters. Since they're resin there are no limitations for drafting or posing. Since they're heroic scaled, I think they need poses that are more heroic too.
-
Gratefully received a couple of these lovely models to paint.
Echo previous comments, big, chunky and lots of details.
A few lines where the layers show, but nothing drastic.
As everyone knows, all Romans wear red.....so i've done the same!
More to follow.......

@Suetonius Paullinus
Very special and as allways really grim and dark painting. As a fan of your style, I like him very much :-)
-
@McYellowbelly
Thank you for this again very different style and great painting. You point out every important detail very well.
-
Female slave revolt fighter
Female citizen with different weapons defending the town
Former legionary military old male veteran
Hmm, VERY tempting, maybe I could paint enough of them to play Gangs of Rome! ;)
-
No money for plastic....sorry...they will be in resin....
Resin. :? That's no good for mass production. How long does it take to pour 24 resin Romans?
Why not metal?
-
Think hard-plastic production is becoming more affordable if you would go for half sprues instead of full sprues. Think the people behind Wargames Atlantic and RGD Gaming have gone that route with small sprues but a larger amount of these per boxed set. Might be worth contacting them as producing these in hard-plastic will increase affordability and as the digital sculpts are already available, the only cost would be the actual tooling and production. You could maybe license the sculptures to another company for actual production. Just some ideas but really like the look of these!
-
I really like the looks of these lads (the bikini-clad females, not so much). I will certainly be interested when they become available for purchasing.
My compliments to all who have provided painted versions - well done!
-Michael
-
I imagine these could be used for Warlord's new skirmish ruleset. Is the intent to provide opponents? Spartacus, I'm guessing, or Ancient Britons?
-
Cornicen, again a lovely model, loads of detail.
(https://i.postimg.cc/QM0VVfzR/P7140575.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/QBKjyJhb)
-
These look very impressive figures. :)
I'm sure the size\scale is mentioned in the thread, but I missed it. Would they "fit" with Crocodile Games Wargods range?
Are they for sale anywhere yet?
-
I don't think the Croc stuff is large enough - except maybe the Demigods.
The Croc stuff is slightly generous 28mm.
-
Sir Barnaby Hammond-Rye is correct.
My decision for the scale was based on the thinking, that there are enough 28-30 miniatures ranges.
The victrix and Aventine Miniatures are fantastic miniatures for historical tabletop. It looks like my fantasy roman range is for most people in a to big scale. But as I say it before, in normal scales there are enough miniatures.
They are in scale like the newer stormcast eternals, and I use them for age of sigmar games.
And yes, for me old man bigger miniatures are easier to paint ;-)
To the subject sale.
May be it will be a good idea to sell the files for people who has 3D printers, so that they can print as many miniatures as they like, in a scale they like. Also it is possible to make moulds from the prints for metal or resin casting.
I am not shure if there are people which are interested in such an offer.
@ SP ....our deal will still remain ;-)
Last
Execuse my bad english.
Best regards
Helmut

I am interested in these, having bought into 40mm a small way last year. There is a range of 40mm Gladiators but I keep forgetting who it was that made them...I too am getting old! lol

An excellent paint composition and a high level of painting skills. My compliment.
-
@ Duff, incredible paintjob!
I really love the Colours on the shield!!!
And since someone asked… And another comparison picture with some Wargods Demigods.
-
The Wargods Artemis figure is quite big boned, IMO, and might also go nicely with this range. I find the figure too large for the Wargods range itself.
-
The newest additions for the range are:
Female slave revolt fighter
Female citizen with different weapons defending the town
Former legionary military old male veteran
Is the "militia" figure the veteran? Or a different figure? Are there pics of the other two?

Some news ;-)
A fantasy roman war elephant
And as allways...yes.....it is fantasy ;-)
-
Nice! :-*
I've also decided to try large scale, but I've jumped up to 60mm Expeditionary Force Toy Soldiers (and similar). :)

I would be interested in buying the STL-files for a handfull of those designs! Might even push me into actually unpack my Photon -printer and start printing (finally)!

I'd be interested in stl files as well! :)

As it would allow me to drop them down to my chosen scale, I would certainly be interested in STL files.
-
Last year I started collecting 60mm plastics from Expeditionary Force, and I have found resizing the typical 28mm-32mm figure by 185% works pretty well.
-
Not my cup of tea at all. But each to their own.
But I will say: The painted lady figure's sword/kopis is backwards.
-
Excellent design. Fantasy or not I'd be happy to use them for a historical skirmish game. Keep up the good work and best wishes for your project.
-
I found you while searching for roman miniatures and your are the best i I have ever seen. I am really interested in stl files and hope you will contact me (sent you also PM)...

After a long time some test WIPs playing around in the last months
-
Man, I'm digging all of these designs. If they ever come to fruition, I'd be interested.
The legs all seem a trifle too short, though. Still awesome, just an observation.
-
Wow! These look great! (I have a really keen love of the scale armor centurion)
I don't do much with 3D printing, but I may well do that with these if they become available.
Might even be worth looking to see if you can partner with one of the plastics producers (War Games Atlantic, Archon, Renedra) and a company that already does distribution to do a kickstarter.
-
But I will say: The painted lady figure's sword/kopis is backwards.
That's cos it's a sica, as used by the Thraex or Thracian style of gladiator.

They appear to be missing a pelvis, in the sense that their thighs seemingly begin at the waist. Not that you'd really notice on the tabletop.
-
My honest critique.
Overall I like the level of detail you have put in and the expression of the faces. The helmets are particularly impressive.
I can’t really understand the term fantasy. The minis are basically standard Romans. Maybe a mix of different historical periods of the empire but so close together that I would characterise them as ‘’not extensively historically accurate’’ not fantasy. If you wanted a fantasy vibe you should exaggerate some elements or add additional designs that would keep the Roman theme but make the minis hard to be placed historically.
I don’t really like the stumpy anatomical proportions. I understand that there is a long established style from the 80’s and 90’s old school minis, but I think that there is a middle ground that allows you to depict normal people instead of dwarves, without being forced to use 100% true scale that can result to tiny and difficult to paint faces and hands/feet.
The best way to avoid anatomical fall pits is to design the bodies in a naked state and then proceeding to dress them with their equipment.
Just my 2 cents

After a long time some test WIPs playing around in the last months
Hi there,
I've been looking for some heroic scale romans, and these look perfect!! You've done an amazing job. I was a bit disheartened to see a lot of the work was done in 2019 and can't see if it went anywhere after that? Then I note your more recent post was a few months back - is this still being worked on?
Did the stls ever get put somewhere? Or might I get a sample?
