They look fantastic.

Insignia on the shields in particular. Nice freehand. Are you just getting into Kings of War or have you been playing a while? 3rd edition is just around the corner!

Thanks for the positive feedback! Freehand shields are my favourite things to paint, and this was fun because it was quite standard for all the shields, unlike the viking and early-medieval shields I usually paint.

@Knight-Captain Tyr: I was into Kings of War from about 2010 to 2012, and then sorta lost touch with it. I really, really liked the rule set back then because it was technically simple yet tactically complex, and it had a lot of potential for historical games! I initially wrote many lists/rules for historical KoW http://www.hourofwolves.org/?view=articles&which=KingsOfWarHistoricalAncientCombat but then they released the historical supplement, and even took the time to update them for 2nd edition in 2016... but despite that I haven't really played the current version of the rules, so I basically missed a whole version of the rules! Looking forward to what they bring this autumn, should be great.

Thanks again,
n

Based up that unit of knights as well, now I have two whole regiments of the old knights ready to go.

All together I have about 1500 points of Bretonnians for Kings of War, I'm using the Brotherhood list since it appears to have been specifically tailored for Bretonnia.

Some very nice units you have! KoW s probably ideal with its very abstract system to bring those forgotten armies back onto the tabletop.

Okay,

The next Lord that I am working on is Lord Ravenwand, cousin of Lord Stroud (see the red-and-black knight/men at arms earlier in the thread). I will be putting together a unit of spears, likely archers, and also a unit of knights lead by Lord Ravenwand!

This was meant to be an entry in this LPL as well, but I didn't make it in time :(

First up are the spear-armed foot.

I'm very happy with them so far! Only seven or so more figs and I'll be ready to base them up!

The Oathmark figures screamed out Bretonnians to me when I first saw them. I think they actually make better Bretonnian men-at-arms than the actual Bretonnian men-at-arms.

Very nice painting! How do they scale with the regular Bretonnian Men At Arms? The Oathmark plastics all strike me as being 25mm scale.

Fantastic paint job, as per usual, Neldoreth! I have been painting quite a lot of oldhammer Bretonnians latelym, but not that many of the plastic ones, as I find them somewhat lacking in poses and definition.

How do the Oatmark miniatures match with the GW miniatures? Surely they are a bit smaller, right?

Thanks for the kind words gents/ladies!

Good question about scale; I haven't actually stood them side-by-side yet, but now I will dig out the Bretonnians and take some pictures, and post them here when they're ready. That being said, they feel exactly the same. I almost feel like they are the same figures to be honest... or rather like a more characterful second-working of them...

Pictures tomorrow!

Here's the scale image of the Oathmark figs along side some trashed Bretonnians and one Empire handgunner. The picture is poor, but I hope it shows that the Oathmark figure's have a scale that's a near perfect match!

I cracked the new Koings of War book today for the first time and was chagrined to find that there are no lists for the Kingsoms of Humans... They are listed in the force background sections, but they don't have any corresponding army lists in the book! They are the only faction that doesn't have one...

Or did I miss it? Should I use Basilea in the mean time? Anyone else have any  issues with the KoW rules?

I think the Kingdom of Men list is going to be in the first supplement. The new rulebook only has lists for those armies that Mantic actually produce figures for?

Post by: Neldoreth on 24 October 2019, 10:40:59 PM
Yeah, it seems that way... I guess that's their privilege, since it's their game, and especially now that they have figures for so many factions.

It's too bad though, since they are listed in the background section, but not in the army lists... But the question for me is should I bother continuing this project? To be honest I haven't actually played anything in years, and I probably won't be done this project before they produce a list anyway... but if they never produce a list, then I'm better off working on other projects?

Thanks

Just so you're aware, Mantic have a huge supplement called 'Armies of Pannithor' about eight weeks away (maybe less) which introduces something like 10+ more lists to the game. Kingdoms of Men are in there, as are the two divisions of Brotherhood and the Varangur.

If you're on FB keep an eye on the Kings of War Fanatics page for army previews from the upcoming supplement.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater either way - you've done a phenomenal job with this project and there are already rules to use for these guys (they would be well fielded as Basileans, for example). :)

Thanks for the kind words, appreciated!

I *really* wish that the Oathmark figs came with women's heads, but sadly they didn't. I picked up some of the female head sprus from Statuesque miniatures. I believe the ones I picked up were Heroic Scale NARROW helmetless, which are large enough to work well with basically any of the modern plastic figures available today, including the Oathmark figs. They are sci-fi heads, but the helmetless ones work for your basic poor medieval troops I think; their modern hairstyles are more believable than dragons in my eyes :D It's very important to note though that *the neck posts on the female heads are quite long and need to be cut down to look proper*. If you don't cut the posts, they'll have abnormal-looking high heads.

My method was to ball up some putty and put it in the head hole, flatten if down, cut about 2mm off of the neck post of the head and just stick it in. Take a moment to position it correctly and then use a sculpting too to make it look more like the surrounding cloth. Viola, done. The statuesque heads are just great and I ordered thirty of them for various projects to add women into my miniature world.

Here's a great link to scale pictures of the Statuesque heads: http://khorosho-productions.blogspot.com/p/comparison-photos.html

I finished another figure for this project recently... A foot knight for the Bretonnians!

I really wanted a foot knight, but the eBay price for the old GW figs was just too much... So I looked at Norba, Reaper, and others, and found these fantastic Bretonnian-inspired knights sculpter by Werner Klocke and thought they looked fantastic and fit the bill well.

With the teasing of Warhammer the Old World, I have rebased and added a few new figures to this Bretonnian ment-at-arms unit, including a new standard bearer! I am really liking the look of these figs on the larger 25mm bases.

Excellent, the Varangian Guard during their little known contract for the Bretonnian crown!  ;)

The paint jobs look great. The unit has impressive volume (6x3 figures?). It’s a bit of a shame that Bretonnian infantry get killed fast in most versions of WFB, but at least yours will look very classy while they’re on the table!

Thanks for the kind words, and yes, 18 figures. I had to paint up a few more of them because originally when they were on the unit base for Kings of War there were fewer... It is a shame that they die quickly, isn't it? I know some players don't bring any foot at all, given that the mounted units are so powerful... I just can't leave these giant-shielded men at arms at home though, they're just too pretty haha :)

Did you happen to see the latest Bretonnian figures from GW painted up? They totally stole this paint scheme, haha! Seriously though, I didn't invent it, but I was surprised to see their small army worth of figures painted up very similarly. I like yours better.
They simply use the heraldry of Massone from the old Army book, and I find weird that they dropped the idea of painting all the knights unique colour schemes (like you and the old Bretonnians did). According to the interview this was a design choice to favour painting, and it looks cool for infantry, but the visual appeal of Bretonnian knights (and the 14th century knights they were stolen from) is that everyone displays his own colours, making a knightly army a vibrant, colourful parade.

I suppose there’s nothing stopping folks from painting the Bretonnian knights in individual heraldry and surcoats. It definitely makes for a more visually appealing force! Peasant units in (fairly) uniform livery corresponding to the colours of the noble who raised them also looks quite sharp.

Of course nothing stops you, but the article is explicitly about them rewriting the Bretonnian fluff encouraging uniform painting, An uniform-wearing knight unit, like the crusaders, can be a very menacing look, but that is also because they are usually wearing their own colours.

Yes, they look cool each unit in their lords uniform- as far as the general ragtagness allows :)

Hmm, rewriting the fluff to justify uniform knights does seem a bit lame. If a player wanted humans in uniforms they could already build an Empire force. From my perspective, one of the fun things about the Bretonnians is the individuality of the knights, contrasted with the abject poverty of the rabble. (Honestly, it has been a while since I paid much attention to GW’s lore for the setting- they kind of lost me when the Old World got wiped out and replaced with planes, or dimensions, or whatever.) You’re definitely right about uniformed knights, like crusading orders, having intimidation value. Adding a couple knightly orders to the new Bretonnians could be cool (or adding uniforms to the fluff of the existing orders).

Time will tell whether the changes resonate with the buying public. Personally, I’m still working on my late ‘90’s-early 2000s backlog and those knights will be getting individual heraldry!

Love the discussion here!

Interestingly, the new fluff being written for the Old World apparently takes place long before the events of the Warhammer Fantasy, so these Bretonnians went from being more uniform to having their unique heraldry I guess?

Like you Pattus, I am still painting my way through all the old stuff, like 5th edition Bretonnians and the like. Will I ever play the Old World if it ever gets released? Unlikely, but they're fun to paint.

Thanks again,
n
