So, inspired by my recent introduction to Fistful of Lead, and the collective medieval projects here, I want to build a couple of medieval war bands.
A favourite film of mine, Kingdom of Heaven is leading me to set them firmly in the mid crusades and I want to build my first band around the image above....my favourite scene in the film.
I have various Fireforge and Perry sprues winging their way to me......more soon..... (edit: in a few pages I change mind and go Footsore / Barons War…..)
-
Well said that man, here's the leader of my FFofL Crusaders.
King Harry the Lionfart...

Excellent stuff! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. ;D

Not painted by me but painted by Iain McDonald of Flags of War fame for me during the heady days of the Steve Dean Forum Painting Swap (Salad Days indeed- I hope it serves as inspiration.....

Fantastic figure, wish he was in my Crusade!

He's sitting in my cabinet. I've got half a dozen or so mini's from the forum painting swap. Not all Crusades though :)
-
Here's an excellent idea, old chum...
send him off Crusading to the New Emporium by the Seaside.
;D
-
that is my favorite movie, right above El Cid. I have my middle age forces based on vikings and saxons which can also be used as early reconquista christians in Spain and as early crusader infantry. Add in some gripping beast knights, moor and plastic moor can and archers and it's on its way. Good luck with the project. Check out Schrivsland for inspiration. Rick

You know, I don't actually remember! I *think* he was a freebie of some kind a quite a while back......
If anyone else can chip in?
-
Yes he’s not the Wargames Illustrated Balian D’Ibeline figure...different pose.
-
This topic has our juices flowing.
Look what happens when you get a fun set of rules.
Looking at what figures we have around to get to the table to play against Digits.

That's right Digits, Harry the Lionfart's, the WI figure.
???
-
So he is! Nice one, I may have to order him.
Flatpack - to be fair, the guys on here (Captain Blood, Mamalute etc got there first....I’m merely stoked by what they have done. If I get a few figures that look HALF as good, I will be made up! Their battle report using FFoL was the final straw.....I couldn’t resist!

Very pleased to hear we contributed to your latest venture lol
Looking forward to seeing your progress. ;D
We have some games planned for a few weeks time. Everyone is busy building and painting new retinues in readiness.... lol

It's a great film for inspiration :)
The black and cream certainly does have an appeal to it.

As well as terrain ::) lol
-
Yep, FFofL's a good 'un. There's only very rare occasions when you feel you've actually joined your toys in their world. This has happened to me a few times in the Wacky World of Wiley!!!
:) :-* :)
-
I agree with Oscar Wilde, I can resist anything but temptation.
-
I think Bob and I were hoping you might have a few Muslim figures in your lead pile fella!
-
Gots to have some Warriors of Allah for yer Crusaders to chop up...

-
Hmm...just been looking round at the various available suppliers of Muslim figures.
The Perry ones are nice but I feel the range a little limited. A few nice packs from Artizan helps but after that, the quality of others worries me.
However, for a small band a pack or two from these two purchased, will allow me to build a pair of bands and a few civilians for flavour....
-
I'm concentrating on the Crusaders, so not too bothered about the quality of the Saracens, as I won't be using 'em!
Having said that I couldn't resist this bloke as mi' Mad Mullah and his bodyguard...

Not dissimilar to this image.....
-
Yup saw that one. I’ve just bought some Andalusian Moor archers/ crossbow and a pack of Berber spearmint from Artizan, and a pack of Turk heavy cavalry and a pack of dismounted Turks from Perry.
Enough to give me a reasonable choice of figures to make two retinues I feel.
-
Sounds good, looking forward to seeing some piccys. If I ever decide to tickle up the Saracens, these lads look the bizzo...

Sorry to go slightly OT.... one of my wishes for the Perry Crusade range is that they produce some 'Arab' heavy infantry as the models above are mostly Turkic.
One can dream..... maybe some plastic 'Arab' infantry for the 11th and 12th centuries one day :)
-
Yup...thanks for showing them.....that’s the pack of dismounted I bought....now it will show up my mediocre painting! :?
-
Stand 'em next to mine then they'll look right good!
:-[
-
I did reply to Bob. I do have some Crusade stuff (both sides).
I will try & track them down over the weekend & let you know what I have,
however it sounds like you have lots already.
-
I’m certainly covered now I think bud! Lol
Got home this afternoon to find postie had delivered my own copy of FFoL and my Fireforge mounted Templar and Sgt at arms sprues along with my Wargames illustated Balian figure!
A little disappointed with the Fireforge tbh......same horses and same knight bodies and same cloaks in each! The only difference between the boxes being differing heads and weapons / shield arms.....so much for variety!
Anyway, I will have a few spare if the guys need them.
Now....going to read my new rule book.....
-
What do you reckon to the Wargames illustated Balian figure? I thought it was pretty poor the way the leg disappears above the knee!
:o

Doesn’t bother me too much, easily incorporated into the shadow....and I win whenever there is less to paint! ;)

Popped together the first few figures.
I want to make homage to the picture in the opening post. Here's a start

Not too sure yet, may elect to take grunts.
-
Great start :)
Love that shooting bowman ;)
Yes, Fireforge are very cheeky. Many of their sets contain a lot of the same components as their other sets. In some cases, there’s not a huge amount of difference.
That said, I think the foot figures at least do provide the best raw material to facilitate creative kit-bashing of generic early medieval figures. And once you’ve bought a few of the different boxes, you do end up with a reasonable assortment of different bodies.
But I’ve always felt their repackaging of many of the same components into ‘different’ kits is a bit of a rip-off ::)
-
Glad you recognise your bowman! :D
Yup, they are, and to call the one sprue a “ command sprue” is a real joke!
None the less, I’m not making as many as you fella so I can make enough variety for my purposes.
Best still, I have a few spare horse for the South Warwickshire posse if they need one.
-
Excellent start :)

I won’t be going that far I think!
That remind me, how tall are the trees in the Holy Land?

Nope....not biting. I’m sure I have a bunch of plastic palms somewhere....

Plastic palm trees, got millions (well about 20 )
-
Plastic Flatpack?
Not real palm trees... It's a date then!
I'll get me coat.
-
Oh dear ;D
-
Indeed.
So I’m thinking a little Hollywood here. Regardless of what a crap film, and that’s with a capital C, the 2018 Robin Hood was, I am of a mind to change out the headware on a few archers for a shemagh or “desert” garb. I did like the look of them in the opening crusade elements of the film.
Yes, I know there were liberties taken with other dress (too modern looking etc) in the film, but, I defy anyone to tell me otherwise but I believe adopting the cooler more practical local headdress may well have occurred.
Besides, i think it will look the dogs! Ordered a few heads.

Good man, Hollywood type bollix is just perfect for FFofL.

Well I can see both the originals and your duplicates so no idea!
-
Well I can see both the originals and your duplicates so no idea!
Switched to a different computer and there they were. o_o o_o
I have to say that your crusaders are looking good. :-*
-
Cheers but I need to do a little modification before I add paint. Hopefully they will look ok then.
I’m not happy with the lack of “clutter” on them. I doubt any crusader worth his salt, would not carry a water bottle / gourd to quench his thirst, nor would he be without a coin purse or some such. So these need adding along with a few bits of missing leather strapping etc.
As a reenactor, I come across lots of “ well there is no proof of that as we don’t have remains or woodcuttings” etc.....but you also need to use common sense.
I’m also toying with adding a little mail barding around the horses chests again from the opening picture.
-
Excellent idea to add the extra details. Sometimes it’s these little things that make the figures really come to life. :)
-
Remember, 'Absence of evidence is NOT evidence of absence'
As you know, Digits, people in 17th century paintings may well
be contemporary, but not as if on campaign. They were wearing
their Sunday best for the portrait.
Go with the added details. It, as has been said, 'Makes the figure
come to life'. I look forward to a conversion with the knight quenching
his thirst from a gourd/wine skin etc. with the obligatory peasant
holding his helmet.
-
Exactly.....which is why I hate latchets! Damn silly idea on campaign!
-
I like my latchets! Those big holes on the side let the water out.
-
given it is the desert, a waterbag would be a given. while most of the major supplies would have been kept behind as part of a baggage train, along with the spare horses, i have a hard time believing that the troops wouldn't have carried at least a small waterbag with them.
-
Agreed, goatskins definitely. We lived for a while in Algeria when I was young and I can recall lots of gourds growing and being used for many uses including water bottles. Easy to fashion from green stuff I think.
-
Never mind all that crap about gourds and wotnot...
just make sure everyone's got a big chopper!!!
:o
-

maybe a small pouch on the belt as well. it wasn't uncommon for lesser knights to carry pouches of coins into battle. to bribe footsoldiers if they were wounded or captured. usually to prevent them from being killed, as a sort of 'down payment' on the ransom that would come later.
and probably just water bags. while Gourds were used as water storage in the region, gourds suited to that use were usually fairly large, and being stiff, hard to carry. there might well be gourds or more likely stoppered jars of water and wine with the baggage train, but the individual would likely have carried a softskin water bag for their own use.
-
That makes sense. Even easier for gs me thinks. I may fashion a couple this weekend to see how they look.
-
You could have a NPC servant with/without pack mule.
I remember (& may still have) a fantasy figure which was completely laden down
with just about everything, bow, bags, weapons & even a KITCHEN SINK!
It was a dig at those D&D players who have it all. It was sold as the 'Complete Adventurer'.
-
Already ahead of you mate!
https://www.studiominiatures.com/shop/medieval-mayhem.html
I’ve already ordered Sir Galahad (and the French Castle Guard). The others had squires clutching their coconuts.....a bit too daft me thinks for this! Lol
As for the complete adventurer, yes I have him too somewhere....great mini.
I’m about to base and prime my Muslims so I can start painting them whilst I’m finishing the plastic models.

-
Looking good
-
Been a while.....fell flat, got Covid, painted a shed load of Naps, built a Church, got into CoC and painted a few Germans.....but now I feel ready to get back and give this a go!
Slightly different vibe though.
I’m not actually so interested in painting Balian and his followers but actually like the idea of concentrating on a small force of Seljuk / Turkoman cavalry with a few Arabs/moors mixed in. I may even have a go at building a Bedouin style tent or two. I’m not buying any more though until I’ve painted the few I’ve got.
The few knights I have will simply get painted as Knight Hospitallers with a few mercenary archers / support.
I picked up a copy of Lion Rampant...so I doubt the Islamic force will end up more than 24 horse and a dozen foot. If I get to play it and enjoy it, then I can add alternate troop choices later.
Enough gabbing, I need to paint something.
-
Good luck on this Digits.
I have a stack of desert buildings & Arab civilians (they are 25mm mainly, but I think
we can get away with them). Like Flatpack I too have palm trees. Also an Oasis pool.
Haven't come across my (unpainted) figures yet, but the sort out continues, so who knows.
Did send for the Crusader Lion Rampant rules from North Star.
-
Good. Perhaps if we egg each other on we will get something approaching a game together. I will concentrate on the Islamic forces in that case.
I need to find a suitable figure to represent Imad ad-Din al-Isfahani, heavily fictionalised as played by Alexander Siddig in Kingdom of Heaven to lead my little chaps.

-
Something I’ve nearly got the figure for. Remember all those Saxon, well here’s the 1066 Norman’s.
-
Ok, the butterfly in me has again flitted and landed once more on this disaster of a project. However, like a few of my projects, that’s often the way.
I have recently been drawn to “Baron’s War” and the supplement “Outremer” from Footsore. I have ordered the books and a handful of minis to get me started.
I realised that in making my desert scenery earlier this year, it is screaming out for a small hill top keep and a few dozen skirmishing crusaders / knights hospitalier scrapping over it.

Anyway, let’s see what happens….

Thanks!
Finally, my order from Footsore arrived today……time to start reading and assembling a small force…..
Before 5hat though…I had to start with Balian, defender of Jerusalem, and his friend, the Hospitalier.

-
I’m a little late to this part but I’ll wholeheartedly agree that the terrain looks excellent. :-* Did you get any of the caliphate figures from Footsore by the way? Been thinking about grabbing some but I don’t know the quality of the slightly older sculpts.
-
Concentrating on a Hospitalier / pilgrim collection first.
I did however get the Mamluk Champion on foot and Forces of Islam Bannerman.
-
Judging by what you achieve, nothing wrong with a 'Butterfly' approach.
Very well done David, & keep on 'flitting' ;)
-

Good to know! Looking forward to seeing them painted ;)
-
A bit to go for that…..but my pilgrims finally turned up. I love the cart…a shame they have only released one though. The pilgrims are nice minis and I may buy a pack of Perrys clergy to bolster their numbers.
I have made a start on the Hospitalliers……well, their horses anyway!

-
If you are after more pilgrims, Eureka Miniatures just announced a set based on the Canterbury Tales. Probably not exactly what you are after since many of them are on horseback, but it would add some variety.
-
I will check those out….thanks!
-
I think they are only just cutting the moulds now, so drop them a line to see when they will be available.
I will check those out….thanks!
-
Flitting about, I decided to paint the cart. This is a project I want to get back to, and I like this piece. I may do a few Hospitalliers next…..

-
Very nice!
-
Very cool! The cart looks great, and the guard is lovely as well. good to see this project returning!
-
Cheers both.
The main reason I have decided to dust these off, is that I have an impending trip to Malta on the horizon. The Knights of St John hold a minor fascination and I hope to find out a bit more about them there.
I have also cleaned up nine crossbow men, and may get them out of the way too.
-
Fab :-* :-* :-*
The chaps on the wagon look very natural- excellent work 8)
-
Looks very good and useful for lots of scenarios i especially like the guy riding
shotgun, erm' crossbow beautiful :-*
-
I love that wagon.
-
Great looking diorama - the figures are perfect to depict part of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land
-
Thanks. Yup it’s just a shame they only have the one wagon…I need to look about for a suitable second from elsewhere. Maybe Perry? It’s trying to find something that fits in that’s the issue….i may look at Gripping Beast too.
Meanwhile, I have just ordered some Islamic opposition and a couple of other minis.
Should have my mounted Hospitallers painted shortly….
-
Progress!
The mounted Hospitallers are done

And I have made a start on the foot knights….command done.

-
Lovely job! :-*
-
Cheers!
To finish this force, I have 6 crossbow sergeants on the paint tray now. Plus 9 more foot knights, 6 sergeants with spear, and about a dozen pilgrims. I have NO idea what that means in terms of points and now it looks like I want to buy the second edition, having never played the first! lol
Eventually I WILL do some sergeants of Ibelin, along with a mounted Balian….plus a few knights of Jerusalem, and a small handful of Templars (just ordered them with my Islamic order).
-
Fabulous painting. :-* :-*
-
Those look great mate.
-
Those are looking very nice!
Steve
-
Very nice work Digits.
-
Nicely done David.
I always fancied doing a few Knights of St Lazarus.
They were knights who had to leave their orders due to contracting leprosy.
Lots of interesting modelling to be had there.
-
Indeed. Footsore do a couple of them…one with a nicely contorted face.
Cheers all.
-
In the middle of painting a small batch of sergeants, I got distracted and painted the first of my pilgrims. The guy in foot having picked up a fallen knights shield. I have about 15 or so pilgrims and and I like the look of a few Perry minis too so may expand them…after all, the hospitallers do need someone to protect! I want another wagon or two….and Andy Hobday has suggested in response to my posting, that he may get a few other crew/ guards made up to swap about on the them….that would be cool. At some poin5 I will no doubt pick up a sprue or three of Wargames Atlantic sergeants ( will definitely plump for a box of mounted ones) and could I suppose fashion a guard or two from them.
Anyway, distracted enough, back to painting….

Hell yeah! Hospitallers and pilgrims both look great :)
-
Well painted on your latest figures.
Really like your black on your knights.
I find that black for me is hard to get right.
-
Me too…but I started to use Corvus black from GW as it’s a very flat black and it’s significantly easier these days. Cheers

If you're having trouble with layering blacks- try the Andrea acrylic Black set- it really is an amazing tool- or at least it was for me.

Thanks for the tip on the black paint.
Went on line a ordered the set from Noble Knight games in the US.
It was $35.00 and $4.95 postage.
I think it is a pretty fair price.

lovely painting, following with alot of interest

Thank you!
Crossbow armed sergeants.

Just converting two more minis to make six spear wielding sergeants …..almost there.
-
And they’re done.
The guy third from the right is my favourite…replacing a sword with the spear. He certainly has attitude!

Not sure what to paint next….pilgrims or foot knights……probably a few pilgrims to break the monotony of black.
-
Nice job on those :)
-
Cheers Richard.
So, I don’t need to make a lot of scenery. I will be getting a print of the desert hospital model, and I will make a few buildings I think, otherwise I’m pretty sorted. I do want to buy the camel riders and swap out their guns so they look more in keeping though. As it is, I turned the fella about they are chatting to…..he’s wearing sun glasses! Lol

-
That’s all my pilgrims for now. I have a few more in order but this is sufficient to fight with I believe.
I have the fit knights to paint…..and I will have painted all I originally bought.
I have to buy the starter v2 Barons War boxed set. I will use a few sergeants from it to make another group of spearmen I think. Maybe even a couple more cross bows too but I will save the rest of the sprues for something else.
I also want to buy the mounted sergeants set…as I want to TRY and recreate a little bit of the opening picture in this project….Ibelin riders. I suspect it will severely test my eyesight and show up my painting skills mind you…painting those little crosses…..
-
One thing about the Footsore range that frustrates me is their lack of foot Mumluks apart from the solitary mamluk champion and the bannerman.
Don’t get me wrong, I am looking forward to creating a horse heavy and swift Islamic retinue, but I want the flexibility to be able to put out a dismounted set of knights. Luckily I have a few Perry models bought when I first “started” this project. I will have the dismounted commander to lead them when I get my order….so this should give me a nice unit. I’m looking forward to painting these up.
There will be a pause in the level of output though as I’m soon to be on holiday for a bit with the boss, but on my return, I will be putting a bit of effort into this.
I’m pleased that my return to this project coincides with the release of BW2 so I’m not feeling I’m late to the party for once!
-
What a nice project :-*
-
Footsore mentioned elsewhere about there being some news for Outremer in June so it could be there are going to be more additions to the range.
Steve
-
Oh no! I already spent a lot….then again….Fathers day coming up soon I think….🤔
Cheers both

My foot knights are painted
I don’t usually enjoy painting minis…but I loved doing these!
With the command added in

And that means….I. finished a Retinue for Barons War! Huzzah!
I’ve no idea how many points this is…..and I think I may add another half a dozen sergeants at some point, but I’m happy with them. Now I need to paint someone for them to fight…..bring on the forces of Islam!

A well done job! Not a colourful lot but that's the theme :D
Now I need to paint someone for them to fight…..bring on the forces of Islam!
Or you find some nice folks around your location for a first game ;)
-
Hopefully that’s the case with Barons War (I live near Evesham!) but specifically Outremer? Not so sure. Best covering them myself! 😉
-
Ah, I was at Barons War in my mind, mixed up the threads o_o
-
great looking army! And glad you had fun painting the foot knights, they look cracker :D
-
Great looking outfit there David.
Wouldn’t want to meet that little lot on the battlefield.
-
Thanks guys.
Yes, lets hope they put the fear of god into their opponents!
I have a few Seljuk Turks I bought at the start of this thread on the paint try to tackle this weekend ahead of my Footsore order.
Meanwhile, adding a little scenery. I made up another three stands of palm trees last week, and still feel I could do more..so will keep an eye out for my favourite plastic palms.
I see that linear obstacles are important in Barons War ( well…any wargame really!) but none of my many walls and fences will work here. At best, I’m thinking low piles of rocks passing as boundary markers is the best you may hope to come across.
With that in mind, a quick raid of the garden shed for some rockery grit which was rinsed then baked in the oven for half and hour gave me a stock pile of material.
And work set about gluing them together

-
More deluptious work mate :-*
-
Any more walls & we'll have to rename you...Hadrian! Nice work David.
-
Cheers. Quick ten minute paint job, (took longer to stick tufts to it!) and I’m pleased with them…..adds a little character and an obstacle to be overcome…though I doubt it will hold in the goats ( basing altered to fit the landscape from another project).

-
i love the terrain, especially the palm trees on the (mdf?) boards..... are they bought or home made?
-
Cheers. Plastic palms on cut outs from cork backed placemats. You can but 6 dinner placemats from your supermarket for about £5 or less. The beauty of them is they don’t warp nor slide about. I use them for all sorts of terrain pieces. I must have bought about twenty packs over the years! 🥴
For small stuff…I simply use 1.5mm plasticard like these walls. Making the wells here, the placemats help. Cut a hole in them, then attach a thin pice of plasticard under the hole and paint in the “ depth”.
Anyway, I found three more crossbow men that I discounted for the order. However, they make a great set of disheveled looking mercenary types, hired to guard the wagon…or part of pilgrims. Of course, I’m sure they will scarper when the Seljuk Turks appear….but that’s what the Hospitallers are for!
-
A very nice project. :-* :-*
-
Thank you for saying so 😀
Atheling got me thinking, and as usual, when I get an idea…I often jump straight in!
So, I’m saving the pennies to buy myself the lovely hospital keep made by Footsore. Now this idea ties in nicely. So, when Balian goes to his father’s house at Ibelin, he finds it a dust bowl and sets about digging his well and making his land fertile. That was the inspiration for the small irrigation system in the above picture. But it’s a tad small……
So, to answer his question properly, I thought two birds and one stone. I will build another irrigated area, and show the build as I do so. The twist though, simply replicating the one above is silly, and I already have two wells. So I will also look to build a few lengths of of the hollowed trunk water aqueduct that can be arranged to join an existing well to this planted area. The aqueducts will then provide another linear obstacle as well as adding elevated interest.
So as I said, take one cork backed dinner placemat and shape it to suit. Bevel the edge so it doesn’t stand too proud of the table. Then, form the area of your irrigation ditch with cocktail sticks ( or skewers, but I prefer the scale thickness of the little sticks). I also added a couple of plastic trees for a little point of interest.
Then start to fill in the planted areas with sand. You could use pva (I did for the sticks) but I prefer cheap superglue. Even though cork backed mats rarely warp….i prefer not to chance it.
Finish it…take off the palm tops and let it dry before spraying it black
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/0d49e181-7a1d-462a-bc8c-18ff88c2a8de/437dfb0d-db39-44ca-b338-f54874f279bb.jpeg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds)
More tomorrow…..
-
Looking good so far David. :)
-
Cheers Pete!
So, this bit is a bit trickier and takes a little patience, but simply hollow out a dried twig, then cut supports from smaller twigs, glue and tie in place et voila….a linear object aqueduct. Great to hide behind…or play toy boats in!
Now for some paint and a little agricultural growth…..
-
That terrain is looking amazing!
Steve
-
Excellent stuff Digits!
I will be borrowing some of these ideas as we're doing the NWF, Second Anglo Afghan War - probably a campaign of sorts and some of your ideas could be most useful indeed!
-
Glad to help!
Ok, it’s finished! Realised too late that I’d used coarse sand on this…..oh well….every piece is different! lol
Anyway, here you go.
The aqueduct can be placed at any angle to join the two bases and is a good obstacle I think.
And here’s Balian…..pretty worked up because someone has dug up some of his veg!

Ha! Funnily enough…quite the opposite! I managed to damage a fair number of fingers and toes in my first season as a musketeer in the SK…the name stuck!
Cheers guys! Open to any more modelling ideas to boost the table?

That is a great looking piece: something a bit out of the ordinary for a desert table.
-
That garden looks really impressive!

Thank you guys.
Ok, I have to wait a few weeks for my Footsore order but I do have this guy and I painted my first Muslim fighter. Totally colour uncoordinated I know! Wasn’t happy free handing this shield so I will be swapping it out with a more colourful one when the order arrives probably.

Lovely work Digits- that banner looks to be unique(?). Is so, how did you make it?
-
I found (and lost the link so I can’t credit him. It luckily I kept the picture) that someone had put a selection of flags up for printing. I simply printed them on paper, and attached using pva. Simply just tarted the edges with a dab of paint.
I like it though…and not too glossy which often happens with certain commercial offerings.
Edit: Found him… Eric the Shed!

Thanks mate- I'm very happy to add those to my collection!

Wonderful terrain pieces.
-
He looks great! I'll second the comments about the banner, very striking :)
-
Thanks….so until my Footsore order arrives I’ve run out of figures really…..but I did have some unpainted Perry minis. I rebased them to match…and because I’d glued in lances, I decided instead to add small banners. In game these won’t count as anything other than spear armed Seljuk Turks but I like the idea of mixing these into mixed ranks of charging Islamic cavalry.
I have a couple of packs of mamluk and light cavalry coming, but I think these will fit in nicely, so I’m tempted to add a couple more packs of Perry…..

Not painted by me but painted by Iain McDonald of Flags of War fame for me during the heady days of the Steve Dean Forum Painting Swap (Salad Days indeed- I hope it serves as inspiration.....
He's a beauty! Who makes him?

He's a beauty! Who makes him?
I honestly cannot remember Mike- perhaps if Iain reads this he might remember?

So, I’m sitting on the balcony of my cruise ship, heading to Malta where I’m hoping to see a little history pertaining to the Hospitallers. Plenty of time for pondering my next steps and plotting a few mini projects..
And I keep coming back to this image of Balian and his men charging the massed cavalry of Salahuddin!
I prefer the look of these horses, with their simple looking mail chest barding, to the heavy cloth covered barding the new Wargames Atlantic knight horses. Somehow it looks more sensible in the heat of the Holy Land with the heavy cloth covering more suitable to the fields of wet n windy Blighty!
With that in mind, I have ordered a box of the mounted sergeants , along with a sprue of the mounted knights ( without their horses) to mix in to try and recreate this scene and give me a nice viable unit or two for BW Outremer.
Only knights I think can have lances so I will effectively make two similar looking units….one of “ knights” with lances, the other sergeants with spears. I have also ordered a Greenstuff world mail press mold to recreated the barding.
-
Ok, I give you Balian of Ibelin….mk2!
Using this as my inspiration.

I kit bashed a mounted sergeant horse ( adding chest mail) and a WA knight…repositioning his torso.
Also did him on foot.

My eyes ain’t that good these days…..so the crosses are a bit crappy, but I’m happy enough with him…..now I just need to paint his retinue! 🥲
-
Well done kitbash and paint job! The horse looks a bit scared but that might be due to the opposition it faces :D
-
Great job David.
Orlando’s never looked better 8)

love the figures :-* :-*

Great work on those!

Orlando has...Bloomed. :D
Good work David.

Great stuff.

Great kit bash and some very nice painting - the crosses look mighty fine to me.

Crosses look great to me! Cracking work :-*
-
Thanks all. When I get a breather, I will be doing another 8 minis in Ibelin livery….oh what joy!

lovely, especially the tabbards...

Cheers fella! I have decided I need to buy another knight sprue as i need to expand them a little.
However, I do now need to concentrate on the Muslims….

Some very nice Knights and retinue.

Ok, a few cheap slingers.

Nice work David.

What a great collection 👌

They look fantastic! Nice work as always :)

Love the new additions. :-*
Well painted.
May I ask, "What company was used for Balian's mounted figures."
Really sweet looking figures.

Cheers
I used the Wargames Atlantic mounted sergeants horses, with green stuffed chest mail, with Wargames Atlantic knights riding.

My take on a Cheval de Frise using captured spears. Useful barriers me thinks.

On the paint table….Islamic horse ( ordering a few more Perry to mix in), archers ( not sure whether to leave them random, or unify in either Ibelin or Bethlehem colours) and a few more pilgrims….
Plus I’m making up three more horse to expand Balian’s retinue.

Simple but effective barricades. Will look into building up such ones too, thanks for giving the inspiration!
-
I was asked to do a small dead guy tutorial by a guy on the Barons War Facebook group, resulting in this quick barricade using a few parts from the new barricade sprues in the BW Wargames Atlantic starter set

Would you repeat the tutorial here, please? Asking for a friend :D
-
Your friend is more than welcome to check it out on the BW forum mate…too many pics for easy posting here I’m afraid! 😕
Anyway, onwards! My take on Jerusalem archers. I can’t quite see straight enough to do the chest emblems justice, but they will do!

Nice. :)

Ta Pete!
Bought a small cart on eBay for when a scenario calls for more than one. I had to butcher a mini and remould the jacket to make it work. Pleased with it though.

Very nice! Great conversion as well :)
-
Thanks! Quite enjoying this period at the moment. Lots more conversions coming….
-
:-*
-
The blue on those Jerusalem archers really pops - a great colour scheme. The new carts also add a lot of character to the ongoing project.
-
Cheers, glad you like them!
I’m currently working on converting a batch of Mounted Serjeants. I want to portray them as a beat up, weary looking returning patrol with their sick and dying. I’m quite enjoying kitbashing these fellas…..much fun!

Those conversions are filled with character. Nicely work so far
-
Twig used to good effect, dog photo freaky, but fantastic! Everyone loves a crusade. Except maybe those on the other end - or who knows, maybe, they want to be saved! lol
-
nicely done... is the chap looking back a conversion or from the sprue?
-
Those carts have come up very nicely, and your conversions ooze character (as well as other things, by the looks!)
-
nicely done... is the chap looking back a conversion or from the sprue?
Conversion. The basic three riders on the sprue all have quite a static upright straight ahead posture. I basically cut them at the waist and shave wedges off to get a lean before re-attaching. As I had pre decided the look and story behind them….coming up with the poses was easy (though some took a more than a few cuts and bevels!
The drinking guy took the most work….the left arm alone requiring three different arms and to get the backwards leaning posture meant taking a wedge off the waist, torso and neck as well as shaving off the back of his head. Probably can’t quite appreciate the degree of lean in this picture but once he’s mounted it will be more apparent. Quite enjoying this particular set.
Cheers for the comments guys! And yes…the dog pic positioning is a tad funny!
-
that is flawless work sir
-
very nice conversions!
-
Kitbashing is tremendous fun isn’t it? Just remember you’ve got to paint them all lol
Some very nice creations there :)
-
Cheers all!

Happy with these

Very nice! 8)
-
You've every right to be happy with them.
For someone who professes to dislike painting figures, you do a great job.
-
I’d much rather be building or making scenery. It’s not that I CAN’T paint, I paint sufficiently well for me to be happy with it when done. It’s that I really don’t LIKE painting. It doesn’t come naturally to me so I over think it and that slows me down even further, eating up the time I could be doing something else more fun with!
Thanks.
-
Wonderful painting, these minis look excellent. I have a love/hate relationship with painting myself. Sometimes I really enjoy it, but often I find it a slog. The early, basecoating phase is especially tedious I find!
-
Cheers guys.
So I plan to do a second unit of the same but in combat. I will also do a handful of them on foot. Purely fictitious I’m calling them the Knights of St Frederick. They will fight under the command of any military order on the field (probably Hospitaller…but I will be doing a small batch of Templar knights at some point….hmmm…I could paint them as these guys….then field AS Templars…there’s a thought….
-
Very nice unit!!!
-
Wonderful painting. That little vignette really tells a story. Great work!
-
Thank you both!
Another model added

Love the new mounted figures. :-*

Super great. :-* :-* :-*
Loving the conversions. :)

Thank you chaps, pleased you like them!
I really need to get on with painting the Islamic fellas, but I still have a few units of plastic Serjeants to do to add to the order of St Frederick.

How are you doing the ropes at the mantelets? Those are nice addons for the battlefield!
-
Simply tying on with waxed (flat) linnen thread.
Cheers

Not much into either crusades or Baron's War but always admire Digits work - lots of familiar terrain in this thread, glad to see it getting varied use. Shall be peaking in from time to time to see what he comes up with - and especially on the look out for anything I can adapt to my Robin Hood project, like those crop fields. Which reminds me, Miniature Building Authority has nice 15 mm well in their Russian stuff that I can adapt, think I'll have to buy a couple:

David, surely painting them in a heatwave will make them ...authentic. :D
Now about painting your Russians outside in December. lol lol lol

Those look good

They look great. :-*

Cheers! Trying to get a few cavalry over the line…..
-
Very nice marmalade mate lol lol
Look great.

Ha!
Right!
Took me an age, but the first batch of Light horse is done. I think I will have to break the rest of the cavalry into small batches of similar coloured riders…..the variety of colour does my head in and I’m finding it difficult!

I know what you mean: it took me ages to getting going with my Seljuk project because the variety in the horsemen was just intimidating. Yours have come up very nicely though.
-
The lack of "uniform" colors does make medieval painting harder in some cases. But they look good.
-
Indeed!
So, I played out a few games on Saturday at a rather chilled event aimed at getting people playing BW…..thouroughly enjoyed it! Met a few new people and will be gaming a bit more I suspect!
Anyway, despite my fielded force doing pretty well for themselves on the day, I want to make a few tweaks. I need a Serjeant at arms with a pendant carrying ensign….and happen to have this fella from a Footsore veteran Serjeants set handy. Quick paint job in my now established fictional Order of St Frederick and he’s ready for action.

Looking great! The banner in particular is very impressive :-*
-
Thank you! I do admit to being pleased with the banner!

Well I'm glad to hear that- what's the use in painting one's models if you can't luxuriate in the success afterwards :D

n ice additions

Thanks
Realised I hadn’t been adding updates here.

And I decided on and ordered some SystemHex castle walls. I intend to have scaffolding against it as they repair previous siege damage

And I dug out a medieval crane I bought years ago. It’s badly damaged but I’m sure I can make it usable. It will look good as part of the rebuild effort.
-
This is all very impressive! Shaping up to be quite the force.
-
Some people's best efforts look like wrecks.
I think your wreck is going to look like a best effort. :)
-
Nice of you to say so chaps, thanks!
Yes I’m quite enjoying this project. Played a few games and thoroughly enjoyed it…and just now finishing off a few minis to plug gaps and give me options with my crusaders. Then I really must carry on with the Islamic.
However now I can spend a little time out on the stuff I like best…scenery! The castle walls are a start. It’s a modular system so I can add further pieces in the future but for now I have just ordered half a dozen key pieces. Adding scaffolding to it to put my own stamp on it will be fun. The game isn’t really about siege warfare….but setting skirmished about a breach or engineering works will be quite cool.
I can further expand “into” the castle by adding a few Muslim houses, and other buildings as the mood takes. I’m enjoying the period.
-
Astley walls arrived! Time to start making a scaffold tower for the crane and scaffolding for the “breach”. Love these walls! I will be adding other sections in due time.
I am al so thinking something like this model will look ok as a “Hollywood-esque” Jerusalem building inside tht walls….what do you think?

I think it is great. It would work for India too to my mind.
-
Looks grand to me! I'm getting flashbacks to Kingdom of Heaven just looking at it lol
-
That’s the plan! 😉
Cheers both!
-
Great walls mate.
Two things.
One, the cranes a whopper :o
Two, when will you build the second garage to store it ? lol
-
Trying to sell off a few bits to make room tbh! lol
Yes…it is a tad large but them stones are heavy mate! 😉
-
We progress….platforms / scaffolding built. I have a few more wall sections coming and I will start adding paint….
