Title: Scratchbuilt old western town
Post by: Michi on July 20, 2009, 11:49:35 AM
Hi, this is my first posting here, so a bit of an attempt to get used to this forum.
The buildings were all made from different materials and totally built from scratch from December 2008 to April 2009.

Wow  :o :-* :o

Beautiful work there.  In a couple of shots I thought I was looking at a real building used as reference.

Man, that is OUTSTANDING!  :-*  :o

The engine shed is a beautiful piece of work! Could you tell us some details about building it? And what locomotives are you using? They look great as well.

Keep on building!

Beautiful work. Museum quality, I think  ;)
Now I'd like to see close-ups of all the others too!
Very well done.
Will you use it for gaming, or are they just beautiful model buildings in their own right?

Could you tell us some details about building it? And what locomotives are you using?

The railroad stock is 1/48 scale Bachmann Spectrum 0n30 gauge (0 scale narrow gauge that runs on H0 scale tracks).

The beginning of the engine shed with two stalls (1mm styrene sheet and H0 tracks):

There should be an inspection pit in the right track:

The walls:

Size comparison between 28mm figures, engines and shed:

A little more timberwork for the roof construction done and put a first coat of paint on it. It´s yellow for corporate design of the railway company...

Adding some windows now. The framing is made of paper, they still have to be painted:

These will certainly be used for gaming, though they weren´t yet. Too many different modeling projects since and a few games with other backgrounds only.

Thanks for all the detail and construction pics, again I have to say: one of the best scratchbuilt model buildings I've seen.  :o :-* :o

And thanks for the comparison pics with miniatures: at least I could see that 0-scale works well with 28 mm figures.

I don't usually use emoticons, but if there were a 'speechless' one, I'd be using it right now....

Amazing work - absolutely amazing. That inspection shed is...well, amazing! Brilliant vision, exellent modelling, fantastic painting - I'm running out of adjectives, but you get the idea! What's even better is that it looks like a really good gaming piece - it's very easy to imagine a climactic gun-fight occurring inside that building!

I think others on the forum will echo me when I say - can we also have more close-ups of the rest of the town? The signage is really the stand-out for me - did you hand-paint it all? It really is amazing.

I have a question - actually, I have lots of questions, but just one for the moment. The female model that's in some of the shots, the one carrying a ball or something up in the air in one hand: what model is it? In other words, where did you get it? I ask, because I saw that very model just a week or so ago, and mentally ear-marked it as one to get for my Old West collection for use as a Soiled Dove. However, I had just had surgery, and was on some heavy-duty pain meds, so of course I really can't remember where I saw the mini. So any help on this would be appreciated.

And, once again, this is simply amazing work - what a great way to introduce yourself to the forum!

Absolutely outstanding work. I create a lot of scratch-built pieces for customers and I'm already raiding your photos for ideas!  ;)

I also want to know if the signs are hand-painted or if you used some other method because they are the stand out detail of your town, at least for me.

WOW! Is all about i can say. Some damn nice scratchbuilding there my friend. I am quite jealous.
With that said, when the S.E.D. shows up just follow the directions and use the SASE to ship it back.  :-)

Yes, they are hand painted. Some were cut from cardboard before painting (Undertaker).

The female model that's in some of the shots, the one carrying a ball or something up in the air in one hand: what model is it? In other words, where did you get it? I ask, because I saw that very model just a week or so ago, and mentally ear-marked it as one to get for my Old West collection for use as a Soiled Dove. Sorry, I am not sure which one you mean. All my western figures carry weapons if something at all, so no ball. Can you name the photo and the location of the miniature? I can take a close up for you then.

The swirly skirted filly in front of the 2 engines/locos? I wondered the same, source? In fact, all of your Western Women are different to others I have seen.

(so is Michi icon)

most of the other girls seem to be Black Scorpion.

Correct, that´s the Freebooter Miniatures one holding a flask. I thought you were talking about the finished miniatures. The sculptor is Werner Klocke, who works for Reaper and some others as well.

That´s how the windows were made. First inset the frames, then put the glass (transparent plastic sheet/blister package with cardboard framing) in there and finally attach another frame from the inside:

Are you cutting out the squares in the window framing by hand?

:o    Unbelieveable. Perfection.

I have only one question: Will you take me on as your apprentice? I will work all day for a piece of dry bread and half a glass of water......I am not joking!

Brilliant stuff. I wish there were a few modellers like you in my club!

TT.

I have to say that these are the best scratch built models I have ever seen. And looking at the attention to detail, I thought that in some of the photos I was looking at a life sized building!

You have inspired us!
