All journeys start with the first step... and the same can be said for new ventures.
This will be the first time I will be able to build up an army using my own sculpts... so I thought I'd start with a Commissar:
This chap was once a Berserker who died in battle but, before they could bury him, the ancients decided he died too early so he was resurrected... hence his palid skin.
I have other troops ready to go but they are just primed.

The Commissar is painted so it will be a case of base-coating the other troops here :) .

Another chapter in your Squat Empire? :D
Look forward to seeing how this develops. :)

I reckon this army will be separate... it's not going to be quite as drab as my other stuff :) .
A small development (still very WIP):

All painted so it's back to sculpting now :) :
I decided that I'd find a place in this army for an existing unit, also made up of my own sculpts so this small unit of Ratling Snipers will be joining my command platoon :) :
I've painted the bases so they now match those of the Squats.
I reckon I'll be sculpting a couple of special weapon troopers now :) ...
-
Great stuff 8)
-
You wouldn't sell your sculpts, would you?
-
You wouldn't sell your sculpts, would you?
The Squats have already been sold to Macrocosm Miniatures; who will be producing a small range :) . They recently ran a Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2076383099/the-7-dwarves-28mm-sci-fi-miniatures/description
I'm working with them to get a few more sculpts out there...
The Ratlings can be found here: https://cpmodels.co.uk/shop/ru13-halfling-snipers-full-gillie-suits/
-
Well, I've started work on three more miniatures; two special weapon troopers and an advancing lasgunner. I haven't got very far with them but they all have a body shape and they all have sculpted boots so it's getting there.
The special weapon troopers will have separate weapons so they can each be armed with a variety of weapons... most probably three to start with.
The lasgunner will hopefully get cast and then get another couple of head options... as will the specialists (if I can sort it).
Lots to do, during these uncertain times... and lots of time indoors, to do it.
-
Some new head sculpts:
The top two will be available for purchase (at some point) but the bottom three are one-offs for my army :) .
There will be more to show off soon.
-
Cool stuff :-* :-* :-*
Was always a fan of dwarfs
-
Cheers :) .
Now that I've finished the head-swaps for my troopers, I have had the chance to get a bit of priming done so I can add a few new recruits to the army :) :
-
Next up are some WIP sculpts for the next five troopers :) :

Beautiful work!

GREAT PUTTY SKILLS :-* :-* :-*
-
A few WIP paint-jobs... they just need the final highlights :) :
-
They turned out amazing. Fantastic sculpting skills ! :o :o :o jealous :-*
-
Cheers :) . They should all be available from Macrocosm Miniatures at the end of the month... so if you like them, you'll be able to jump on board :) .
Here's the whole bunch together (now that they are finished):
I have four more to paint then I'll have to sculpt more.
-
The last four of my Squats are now painted... so I need to get sculpting again :) :
-
They're great! :D
-
Cheers :) .
Some of them will be available from Macrocosm Miniatures soon... they are in the shop ready to be activated :) :
https://www.macrocosm.co.uk/product-category/macrocosm/space-dwarves-macrocosm/
-
Splendid! I'll get some and then shamefully stick them with the rest of my unpainted squats as I eventually get buried by an avalanche of unpainted miniatures - but I must have them :D
-
Cool :) ... The more people I can recruit, the more Space Dwarfs will invade the world :) ...
In the meantime, here's another Sergeant for the army :) (finished except for the basing tab):
Next up, will be an advancing lasgunner :) .
-
Another day, another finished Squat; this time it's an advancing las-gunner :) :
Focusing on one at a time, rather than batch sculpting, has made a big difference to output :) .
-
Nice one Inso, trouble is I have been re-reading Rogue Trader a lot lately and the Squat-itch (oh-er missus) has just started tickling slightly :o
Having just completed a full set of Thrugg Bullnecks Ork raiders, things are a moving!
I will start a thread shortly............
Keep up the good work, and may you have many nights of good sleep Sir!
Glen

Gorgeous work bud! The world needs more Space Dwarves :)

Gorgeous work bud! The world needs more Space Dwarves :)
Cheers... I'm working on it :) .
Just the basing tab to go on this one; a Comms-trooper :) :
Next up will be a pair of Special Weapon troopers :) .
-
More stuff on the must buy list, just as I am trying sell and not buy lol

More stuff on the must buy list, just as I am trying sell and not buy lol
I'm glad you like them :) ... However, I'll not apologise for this :D :
The latest additions; two Special Weapon troopers:
They still need basing tabs and the separate weapons making (4 of them: Melta, Flamer, Plasma and Grenade Launcher) but the Squat part is finished :) .
-
great work :-* :-* :-*
-
Lovely models once again.
-
Cheers :) . Here's the first of the special weapons finished... just three more to go now...
Chem-Burnner - A flamer weapon that uses chemical reaction of mixed elements, rather than needing a pilot light to ignite fuel. Two chemicals are loaded into separate tanks and pumped forward into a combining nozzle which ejects the mixture before it reacts and bursts into streams of liquid flame. The weapon tends to be quite long in order to reduce the risk of burning the operator. The weapon counts as a standard flamer in all respects.
-
Another great project!
As a side-note, there are rumours that the Squats are re-emerging in the 40K universe... :o
-
Another great project!
As a side-note, there are rumours that the Squats are re-emerging in the 40K universe... :o
Cheers :) .
The rumours could be down to a translation error... Until I see new models, I don't even consider rumours because there have been so many 'trolling' rumours that I need proof, not conjecture, before I'll believe anything :) .
-
Finally... all the special weapons are finished :) ! 4 special weapons and 2 trooper bodies:
Flamer:
Plasma:
Melta:
Grenade Launcher:
Now I'll get these sent off with the other five and wait to see how the casts turn out :) . I will also take a short sculpting break, before the next Dwarf Sculpts :) .
-
These:
Have now turned into these:
That means that I will have plenty of casts to convert in order to add a lot more variety to the range, once I have finished the five sculpts I am currently working on :) .
The project continues... :) .
-
great sculpting skills :-*

Cheers :) .
I hope that I can maintain the standard throughout the whole project :) .

It's been a while but seeing as this isn't just me advertising miniatures and is all about me building an army, I have started to put a bit of paint down on some of the casts. This is mostly because I am not into sculpting at the moment but also because the whole point of this project is to build my army... so I have started to paint a few miniatures :) :
In a bid to add a bit of variety amongst the same miniatures, the ones at the back have tanned skin, the ones in the middle will have black skin and the ones at the front will have white skin :) . I am not painting these in squads... just as batches of miniatures that will be arranged into squads later so all of the squads will get a good mix of miniatures, skin colours and the odd conversion here and there... but obviously, that's a bit of a way off yet.
Still... the journey continues :) ... more to come.
-
Good stuff :)
-
Fab as always Inso 8)
-
These are freakin' amazing. Well done.
-
Cheers :) .
The painting is on hold... as is most of my sculpting :( . I've just not been in the mood for any of my hobby lately and it has been a real struggle to get anything done.
As a result, I went back to some of my WIPs and ripped their arms and heads off because I just wasn't happy with them. I then repaired/replaced the arms and have added a head to one of them... so I have made a little bit of progress :) . Here's the Sgt that I have finished:
The second Sgt is getting his face at some point over the weekend (hopefully) but I am on painkillers (due to chronic pain) so it may or may not happen... If I finish the second one, I'll post pix :) .

Nice work Inso!
Am I forgiven if I suggest your little fella is wielding the hammer of ball & pain ;) lol lol lol lol
Hope the rest of your muse comes back soon, as does mine????
Glen
-
Cheers :) . The mojo thing is a real pain... I think it's because I've been sculpting for a long period of time so probably need a brea from it... but want to finish things so I can't take a break because I feel guilty! I hope you get your mojo back soon :) .
That said, I have managed to get a second Sgt finished :) :

It's been a while but I've started sculpting Junior Officers again. This is the first one and he's telling the troops behind him to "HOLD!" :) ...
The next one will be started tomorrow so there will be more to come :) .
-
Another junior officer, this tiime with a power hammer and a smile :) ...
The next one is partially finished and it may end up with a power axe... or a power hammer... I haven't decided yet :) .
-
Brilliant sculpts Inso!
-
great work on these - I can't even begin to imagine how much practice it would have taken to be able to sculpt like this!
-
Love the officer with hammer! :D
Something seems 'off' about Officer Fist however. I feel he needs more of an elbow in the arm holding his pistol, and the upper arm (humerus) of the fist arm seems too long? It could however just be the photo?
Other than the minor anatomical strangeness, I do love him though!
-
Cheers :) .
@jawd500 - I've been sculpting miniatures for the best part of 35 years; on and off. I'm by no means perfect but I think is good enough :) .
@Splod - I agree about the fist-arm comment but it'll have to stay as it is now... a repair would be a nightmare and would probably damage the sculpt heavily :( ... food for thought, though, thanks :) . When viewed from the top, the pistol arm looks OK so I reckon I'll get away with it :) .
-
The final Junior Officer is done, bar the basing tab :) :
Next up, will be a rather stout Standard Bearer :) .
-
A Standard Bearer today:) :
Next will be a Medic :) .
-
On to the next batch :) :
-
They look amazing!
-
Cheers :) .
I've had some army time, this weekend so I've assembled and prepped a few troops... an officer and some Sgts:
Some support troopers:
and some progress on a few sculpts:

I need these :o :D
-
I need these :o :D
:D .
Any that haven't been already, will end up in a Kickstarter and then be available from here :) :
https://www.macrocosm.co.uk/product-category/macrocosm/space-dwarves-macrocosm/
The specials and heavies should either be there already or be joining imminently and the officer/Sgts should be appearing in a Kickstarter in the near future :) .
The most recent Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2076383099/sci-fi-dwarves-command-squad/description
I wish that my painting was as good as that... but I am just too impatient to put the time in :D !
-
Today, I thought I'd share another WIP. The main focus for these, is the Lasgunner and Heavy Flamer Trooper (just the heads to go :) ):
-
The Lasgunner and Heavy Flamer Trooper are now finished (apart from the basing tab):
I'll be directing my focus towards the two Medics now :) .
-
A pair of Medics today:
Next up, will be 2 more Officers that will go nicely with these ones:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2076383099/sci-fi-space-dwarves/description
-
Awesome sculps! :-*
-
Thank you :) .
I'm keeping the machine rolling with an AutoCannon to go with the existing Heavy Weapon Trooper and a Grenadier:
I'm not sure what's next yet :) .
-
With the completion of this Lasgunner:
I can now send the latest batch off to Macrocosm Miniatures for casting :) :
Less than 15 sculpts/conversions to go now :) .
-
The character you sculpt into them is always impressive 8)
-
I can't stop looking at that one medic and thinking he's almost in a proper accordion player pose. Maybe sculpt a variant musician? Squats probably dig They Might Be Giants and Weird Al, right? :)
-
Accordion? I think it would take too much to convert... it would need a new sculpt ;) . If I was going to have a musician in the army, I think he'd have bagpipes.
I've finished the latest Captain now :) .
He is armed with a holstered pistol and a Close-Combat-Dog :) .
-
I love that sculpt!
Should be quite simple to add one of those ball launcher things to his right hand.
-
Thank you :) .
I thought I'd give the spare hand a clenched fist so that people could add things easier than with an open hand :) .
-
Just the basing tab to go on this one... the most powerful Squat (colonel) in the universe :) ...
He may need avenging at some point :D !
-
He has a lot of character 8)
-
He has a lot of character 8)
Cheers :) .
I've started on a bunch of head-swaps now. It'll allow for more variety amongst the lasgunners :) .
-
The dwarf with the dog is cute!
-
Very, very cool project. :) I love Squats (as all old people do, I suppose).
-
Cheers :) .
In other news... five Lasgunners today :) :
Just four more Lasgunner conversions and three more Comms Trooper conversions to go and that is the original list finished :) . I can't start on those until I get some casts of the previous batch so it looks like I'm having a short sculpting break :) ...
-
Man, I love the stuff you're putting out. I wish I had a need for them.
-

Thank you :) . I'm glad you like them :) .
Today, I got some actual recruits for my army... casts for the army :) :
There were other casts in there for converting for the project... but I just wanted to show off the troops that are going in my army (just for a change :) ).
-
Where do I send my salary? :-*
-
:) ... these will be available from Macrocosm Miniatures at some point, via Kick Starter (and then from the store).
-
Top-notch sculpting and casting 8)

Great news - well, not to my bank account but hey, shinies lol
-
I love your work, sir. Enough so that I've been signing up for the Kickstarters, and a small army is starting to take shape, but then I'm a Squats fan from back in the day and annoyed Gdubs won't bring them back even though they resurrected the Genestealer Cults. I love the dwarf with the dog, and when he comes out I'll just have to snap him up, he has so much character. I'm looking forward to having the newest Kickstarter fulfill, and await the next one as I will sign up for it as well.

Thank you for the nice words :) . The Captain with the dog is my favourite sculpt so I've really glad you have been so taken with it :) . I hope that you show painted versions on the forum when you have some to share, I always love seeing what other people can make of my sculpts :) .

The last of the basic troopers are finished:
Just three more Comms Troopers and the project is done :) .
-
The last three sculpts for this project have now been finished :) ... three Comms-Troopers:
Once I have repaired the feet, they'll be packed up and sent off for casting... THEN... I guess I need to continue painting them all :) .
Here's a link to a lovely collage :) :
https://i.imgur.com/M9jchwD.jpg
-
I so want these, even though they'll just add to the pile o' shame of unpainted minis lol
-
I've had the latest batch of casts back now :) :
They've been washed, cleaned-up and based but I just have a few bits to repair and the barrels to drill before I can paint them :) .
Also, I've sent of the last batch of minis for casting so they'll be sorted soon :) .
-
Getting there :) :
One more batch of troops to arrive and I'll start painting in earnest :) .
-
Looking good :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
I love the old school look of these guys, very much Bob Olley, whose work I also love. When will these guys get Kickstartered, so I can start squirrelling back funds to add them on to my army?
-

I am not in the loop with the production side of things so I have no idea when the full range will be available in a Kickstarter or in the shop. Sorry :( .
-
Man, I love the stuff you're putting out. I wish I had a need for them.
We all as gamers know that a "need " is not needed to buy minis.

-
It's been quiet here... mostly because I've done very little sculpting recently... so in a bid to change things, I decided to have a bit of fun and convert a miniature... and it's going well (converted and partly painted) but I want to keep it secret until it's finished.
However, while I was converting the "secret" miniature, I ended up with some extra putty and decided to make a stand in for ME in the army. This will count as an Astra Militarum Advisor (Air Force) :) :

Stefan Sandisson... and his faithful companion, Sooty :) :
-
Brill!
-
That's great. The world needs more aeronautical Squats, although the Kharadron Overlords do help fill the niche a bit.
So when are you doing a full Overlord airship crew? :)
-
Cheers :) .
No blimp crew... I don't see blimps in a sci-fi 'Grim-Dark' setting... sorry :( .
In the meantime, here's just a bit of fun :) :

I've decided to add this vehicle to the work-bench again... it's going to be one of the transports for the 'new' Squat army :) :

Counts as a Storm Lord.

looking good

Where did you get the big tracks?
-
a toy tank from the looks of them - from what I can see of them - possibly action force?
-
Where did you get the big tracks?
The tracks are from a Tamiya 1/35th scale Panther tank. I've used the lower hull and wheels/tracks but have widened it and packed it out with plasticard... here's the best image I can find:
The tank kit was less than £15.00 so it wasn't too expensive (especially for a super heavy tank :) ).
-
The last of the sculpts have arrived and they have been cleaned, based and primed :) . As a result, here's the whole company, ready for organising into units and then painting :) :
It's taken a long time but I've finally got the army together :) .
-
:-*
-
Amazing :)
-
Cheers :) .
I wasn't going to bother with this one... but I was asked to make it so here's a sniper :) :
Optic link, direct to scope with 3 different wavelengths of light reception (UV, IR and standard). He doesn't have to look through a physical sight... and if the link fails, he has a backup screen on the rear of the scope :) .
-
Cor, there's some really neat work in there Inso, then again shouldn't be surprised! Loving the faces too.
-

Cheers :) . Nice of you to say so :) .
I have been working on a few other things, lately but have just got back into this again. These aren't part of the original project (that is finished) now I'm doing a few bits and bobs that have been asked for. Here's where I am at with the next six:
The guy on the far left is a DJ and the other five are close combat troopers (they'll have bolt pistols and a selection of melee weapons). Just for info, the "mag-lock holster" is a magnetic plate that holds onto a pistol, without the need to sheath it :) ...
-
This is not one of the miniatures that I planned to finish... but here's a Primaris Psyker proxy:
Affectionately known as a Beer Seer :) .

Affectionately known as a Beer Seer :) .
Got to be the best kind of Seer, surely ;) :D
-
Lovely work ( as usual) Inso.
Z
-
That's my kinda psyker right there. Love it.
-
Cheers :) .
The runes around the bottom half of the coat read "through the power of beer I summon the ansestors home" (ancestors was spelled that way, due to the lack of a rune for "c" ). The other runes are just represented singly.
I thought that a Dwarf, using beer to get in touch with the ancestors and channel their psychic energy through his rune-staff would be a more flavourful account of "the warp did it"...
-
Just got me thinking, the powers this guy would implement would be transferring the effects his ansestors experience with their excessive quaffing in the great beer halls of the afterlife. 'Heretical purge' 'Warp goggles' 'Dizzy spell'. Whatta they do? Dunno!
-

I can think of a few others too... especially my favourite one "beer shields" (always helpful when fighting drunk ;) )... also "Ultimate confidence" (also known as "hold my beer" :) )...
In other news, I've nearly finished a female version... a Wine Witch :) . She should be ready over the next few days :) . Then, we'll have to think of a few other powers like "Furious tongue" and "dance of the handbag" :) ...

I've now moved on to the close combat squad again... just the arms and weapons to go before I start on the DJ (at the back) :) :
-
The close combat squad has stalled... as has most of the hobby... but I suddenly had an idea about an Ordnance Officer as an advisor. A little conversion later and I had exactly what I wanted :) :
There is a myth about archers showing two fingers to prove they had them... I thought that pushing a button only takes one finger so that's what I went for. It's a one off (not going for casting), mostly because it's a bit offensive... but it is, what it is :) .
-
Very cool
-
All painted now :) :
I am working on painting up my army command unit. Just 4 more to go; with the army commander being the focus at the moment :) .
-
Now that's one fine looking and mightily pissed off Dwarf. Thanks for sharing.
-
Naughty, naughty dwarf!
Don’t trust dwarves, don’t like ‘em. (Or is that supposed to be about elves?). :)
Dan

Very characterful. Remember these GW plastic dwarfs from the 1990s.

I decided to sculpt the close combat troopers individually... and have now finished the first one of five :) :
I was failing dismally; trying to sculpt them all together so it just made sense to cut things down a bit. I've started on the second one and hope to have him finished by the end of the week :) .

WoW! Fantastic figures! Brilliant sculpting! All I need is another genre!

Some updates... now that the last batch have been cast up and I have received some resin copies:
A DJ that I painted for my friend (He's also a DJ called Bobby Bounce :) ):
A Beer Seer that will be joining my army command squad:

A new sculpt; an Engineseer proxy:

and a bit of fun with a Squat superhero... Thor (sculpted with a mix of Marvel and Norse Mythology):
I'm currently painting a Wine Witch and DJ to add to my army :) ... I'll post pix of those when I have finished :) .

It's been a while since I dropped by one of threads Inso, but this caught my eye:
The whole range :) :

I mean, wow, what an astonishing sculpting output - very well done indeed sir! 8)
-
Cheers Major_Gilbear :) , I appreciate it :) .
That's about 2 years of work and I'm very proud of the fact that I have sculpted an entire range of miniatures (it was one of the very few items on my bucket list :) ).
I am still working with Chris, over at Macrocosm Miniatures so there is no reason that the range won't expand over time :) .
Once I have finished a pair of Servitors to go with the Engineseer, I am planning to sculpt a pair of advisors (air-force and artillery officers)... after that, I'm not sure :) ... maybe a bagpiper?
-
What about some of the more auxiliary style units, like a stand-in for a Thudd Gun or a Mole Mortar, plus some junior Tech Seers and utility Servitors to crew them? Or some powered armour suits? :)
-
These do look great. Good Proxies for Mantic Deadzone.

I bought the GW Commerative Ork singer figure yesterday, and they had a display in the shop with a band from various figures in their range. It was very well done, and now has me scouring my collection for figures with musical instruments ;D A dwarf bagpiper would be a welcome addition (as is the DJ earlier in the thread)

This army has been based on the Astra Militarum codex, rather than the old Squat lists so thudd guns, mole mortars and power armour aren't covered. I'm working on servitors to go with the Engineseer and also a couple of advisors... but they are also in line with the Astra Militarum codex. I have had calls for power/exo armour and it may happen but it will be something that will take a lot of planning so that I get consistency across the units... so I'll need to get armour plates and weapons cast up and then mount them to an armature and fill in the gaps... quite involved...
@ zemjw - I've converted a one off bag-piper for a friend and liked it so much that a Squat bag-piper is very much on the cards, when I can fit him in :) .
-
Well, there are some units from the Guard Codex that have appeared and disappeared over the years:
# Stormtroopers/Scions/Kasrkin
# Wyrdvayne/Sanctioned Psykers squad
# Ogryn
# Ratlings
# Special Weapons Squads (including options with Demo charges and sniper rifles not generally available in other units)
# Priests
# Commissars
# Rough Riders (could be on bikes...?)
# Penal troopers
# Conscripts/Whiteshields and grizzled veteran squads
And then weapons like the mortar or grenade launcher which are common in Guard armies but never seen in other Imperial armies.
Finally, from much earlier eras, you also have Beastmen, Assault troops (with 2 Laspistols and jump packs), and support weapons like the Mole Mortar, Rapier, Thudd Gun, or the Tarantula. Plus, you know, vehicles! ;)
I think the options highlighted in maroon could all be reasonably fitted into the Space Dwarfs without seeming out of place in relation to the old GW Squats range(s). The new Guard Codex also has some new support weapons that look to be mortars/artillery/AT guns, so if you were to do Mole Mortars, Thudds, etc, I think they'd still be usable.
...Anyway, I don't mean to seem as if I'm dictating anything here, I'm just making suggestions! :)

It's great to hear suggestions and I never feel "dictated to"... cheers for taking an interest.
Now to sort some answers:
+ Scions/Kasrkin/Stormtroopers are POSSIBLY a future project... it depends on getting a few bits of armour cast up and also coming up with a decent helmet design (the helmet design is ESSENTIAL to getting the project right).
+ I have a sniper rifle already and a demo-charge isn't too much of a stretch so a special weapon squad isn't out of the question.
+ Priests are a bit awkward due to the weapon options... but I've sculpted Berserkers before so they may be a good option to proxy as Priests... so that isn't off the table.
+ Rough Riders... probably not. The mounts (in whatever form they take) would be a struggle for me.
So... pretty much everything is a possibility apart from Rough Riders :) .
In the interim, I have just finished painting the Wine Witch (Proxy Primaris Psyker):

Here are the Wine Witch and Beer Seer together :) :

What a great line of sculpts brimming with character and humor. Really fantastic work.

With all that drinking going on, quite a lot of wee ;) :D I should think, keep up the good work sir!

Definitely :) .
Seeing as I have a couple of these, it was only right and proper to paint one up for my army. He'll proxy as a command comms, I reckon :) :

I was hoping to paint up a Christmas miniature but didn't have time... so here's the latest sculpt, an Ordnance Officer. Merry Christmas :) :

This is another advisor, namely and Air Force one. He's old-school Air Force so he isn't allowed a beard and has to make do with a big moustache instead :) :

A small update... Thor, the Engineseer and the two advisors have now been sent off for casting. I should have sculpted a pair of Servitors to go with the Engineseer but I have been distracted with a couple of other projects...
First, a friend of mine asked me to sculpt him a diver that he could wear as a pendent. He provided me reference to use and this is what I came up with:
Second, a conversion was needed for a game board at Salute 2023... so I dug out a Hasslefree Miniatures dolly and converted it into this well known, sci-fi heroine:
I am now working on a caricature of a political figure and a pair of laughing Buddhas... which are far from finished. Hopefully, I'll get back to the Servitors soon but I think I just need a bit of time away to act as a palette cleanser :) .
-
Cool models! I have to admit, I was nosing around Macrocosm last night <ahem>, but the web store is functionally closed for now whilst the owner completes a house move.
Anyway.
The diver, with a few tweaks, might not actually be a bad basis for a servitor you know... Any chance you could get a copy of the master (or the original master) back after it's cast for some tweaks? :)
-

I think the shop will be open soon because the machines are up and running at the new address. I'll ping Chris a message and ask when things will resume :) .
I reckon you're right about the diver, they'd make good servitors (a bit like the old action force diver/robot troopers). They'd certainly work for humans (it's a bit bigger than my Dwarfs) but my army uses robots rather than lobotomised Dwarfs and I've got two partially finished on the corks. I will be getting a bunch of casts back (of the diver) so I might tinker anyway :) .
-
The wheels are still in turn... the process is still going on... Casting has been happening:
I haven't received these yet but the diver is still needed in metal so I reckon I'll get the metal/resin casts in one batch.
With the Engineseer and advisors being finished, it's just a case of finishing the servitors and all of the sculpting will be finished for the project.
With 10th edition (WH40K) on the horizon, I may start another project to fill out a few new slots but I'm in no rush because it would be nice to paint my army :) .
-
Cool. The mechanical arm has come out nicely. I imagine fiddly bits like that will be a pain.
-
Really liking the look of these sculpts. Great work.
-
Cool. The mechanical arm has come out nicely. I imagine fiddly bits like that will be a pain.
Cheers :) . Although the arm is a bit fiddly, I'm hoping that the resin hasn't caused any bubbles that mean I have to spend time fixing it. Once it's cast in metal, I expect the spin casting will be better for casting because the metal is forced in rather than gravity fed.
Really liking the look of these sculpts. Great work.
Thanks :) .

I've run out of sculpting mojo so I thought I'd paint the first infantry squad for the first platoon :) :
I've started to paint the heavy weapon squad for the same platoon so (hopefully) that should be finished in the next week or so :) .

An Engineseer today :) :

Hopefully, there will be another squad to show off this week, assuming I don't get distracted again :) ...

I like him.

Cheers :) . He'll be available from Macrocosm Miniatures at some point... I've no idea when... I just sculpt and send them off :) .
Here's the next squad; a heavy weapon squad for the first platoon of blue company :) :
Once the bases have properly dried, I'll be getting the second infantry squad out and onto the painting table.
-
While I work away on another infantry unit... plus another couple of characters, I just thought I'd mention that Chris has reopened his store and some of these miniatures are available again :) .
You can find them here: https://www.macrocosm.co.uk/product-category/macrocosm/space-dwarves-macrocosm/
I make no money from them... in fact, I make no money from sculpting them either :) (I get paid in kind, with resin casts)... I'm just sharing where you can buy my work (if you want to).
In other news, I have received some casts of the diver I made for a friend... so I thought I'd paint one :) :
Nothing fancy but a painted diver, nonetheless :)

The latest Beer Seer for the army (proxy Primaris Psyker):
He should have been finished before Christmas but another project got in the way... at least he's ready for this Christmas :) .
-
This is really a great looking project! (Yeah, the best thing with Christmas projects is that there is always a next Christmas)
-

I see macrocosm has a new kickstarter with your sculpts on it. Nice.

Yep :) ... https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2076383099/space-dwarves-the-party/description
It looks like there may/may not need to be another one at a later date for a few of the later sculpts... but with the ones in this Kickstarter, there are now options for Psykers and maybe even a few Juves for Necromunda :) (the close combat warriors).
I hope that Chris does well with these :) .

Continuing the theme, here's another Wine Witch:

The latest unit is finished; a Squat Infantry Squad:

Cheers and a big YEP. I felt that an artillery officer would suit the beard of an old-school chaos Dwarf because they were into their daemonic cannons and fire and explosions :) .

I recently downloaded the index cards for WH40k 10th edition (Astra Militarum) and it would appear that I have to make a few minor adjustments to the army...
1. My Army Commander (at present) has to be a special character (like Ironhand Straken, for example) because there isn't a vanilla army commander at the moment.
2. In order to have my advisors, I have to have a unit of three attachés so I will need to add a psyker and have a unit of three (Air, Artillery, psyker).
3. My Primaris Psykers can't join command squads so I'll have to spread them out amongst the squads.
4. I will turn a blind eye to some of the close combat weapon options due to not having any chainswords but plenty of hammers.
In all fairness, it's not too bad but it means that I have to sculpt an alternative psyker (Astropath advisor) in order for me to include the advisors and make a few small adjustments to where the characters would be added on the battlefield...
... it's lucky that I don't game but I would like to keep the army "Codex friendly" because the miniatures are being sold and to not have the option of including sculpted miniatures in the army due to there being a required character to add to them, is unfair... So I'll definitely be sorting a proxy Astropath.
I wish, sometimes, that GW would leave things alone... I am old and I fear change ;) :D .

Inso,
Splendifferous stuff as ever!

These sculpts are fantastic! They nail the nostalgia wonderfully - like something that walked straight out of the 80s, and with loads of cheeky character to boot.

More painting :) . This is the first infantry squad for the second platoon :) :

Two more units for the second platoon; the command squad and second infantry squad :) :

a nice force. Well done

a nice force. Well done
Cheers :) .
The last unit for the second platoon is on the work bench... then it's the third platoon and that's all the painting finished until I have sculpted some servitors and an astropath... then that'll be it for this army :) (unless I feel the need to paint up some of the spares :) ).
-
The final unit of second platoon is now finished; the heavy weapon squad:
I'll tee-up a photo of the second platoon at some point soon :) .
Now... it's on to the third platoon :) ... and I'll probably start with an infantry squad (to get the bigger unit finished first)...

I've just finished Thor...

... and he really doesn't like being reminded about things...
I love him , he's so cool. I hope he's coming out soon, along with Santa and the Wine Witch. I am a fan of all your creations, and have invested in every Macrocosm Kickstarter where they've appeared. Now, I need to paint them all. Sigh, oh, well.
-
Cheers, Steelwraith :) . I'm glad you are enjoying my sculpts :) .
I am not sure what is happening with Thor... I'll ask Chris and see when/if he plans to release him. He's quite specialised so I'm not sure where he'd fit in the kickstarter/release schedule.
I'll find out and let you know :) .
-
@Steelwraith - I have been in touch with Chris at Macrocosm and there are plans for an October Kickstarter which will include Thor :) (probably as an Inquisitorial agent).

... Roll on 2024 so I can finally get this project finished :) (before I start the next one ;) :) ).

That's awesome. I love seeing an assembled army.

That's awesome. I love seeing an assembled army.

The plan is to finish the last platoon and add six more characters (4 servitors and 2 Astropaths) then build a display case for it... hopefully fortifications with holes cut in the board so the troops have places to stand :) .
I have obligations before I start on the display so I doubt it will be built for a good year or so...
-
Happy New Year :) .
This is the first infantry squad for the third (and final) platoon :) :
The second squad has had its first basecoat and will be getting a tidy-up soon :) ... only 21 miniatures to paint before I need to worry about sculpting more :) ...

They are coming together nicely!

Very nice :D, go Inso, go! :)
-
Those are some very nice, characterful sculpts. Really nice take on Space Dwarfs.

Cheers :) .
Just for information, the latest Kickstarter has been started; this time for the Engineseer, Thor, Air Advisor and Artillery Advisor (plus a big robot that I didn't sculpt):
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2076383099/space-dwarves-the-engineers/description

I am pleased to say that I've already signed up for this Kickstarter too, but I'm sure you saw that coming. Looking forward to seeing Thor arrive in my mailbox.

It's been a while... a bit of sculpting for other people has interrupted things... but here's a WIP for an Astropath:
All that needs to be finished is his staff/stave. Once this one is cast up, it will enable all of the advisors to join the army (advisors are now taken as a unit of Artillery/Airforce/Astropath models instead of being taken separately).
Then it's four servitors and that's it for the army :) ...
-
He (and the others too) look great.

Cheers :) .
He's finished now:

The next "big thing" is on the cork, ready to get some work :) ...

A minor distraction... a Squat adventurer...

Something a little chaotic, this time :) :

Next will be a bunch of more familiar looking Squats :) ...

Great sculpting on both of them!

The latest additions:

I'll probably make a custom base so that everything fits nicely together.

Great sculpting work on them!

Wonderful as always :)

Fantastic models!

Great sculpts indeed, a lot of personnality. Bravo !
-
Cheers :) .
I'm currently working on the next two which are a special weapon trooper and comms specialist :) . They'll hopefully be sculpted fairly quickly because they are "grunts".
-
It's been a while...and I needed a change of direction so I made a female Astropath :) :
Hopefully, it'll get my mojo to a place where I can finish a few commissions...

Great sculpting again!

Very nice. Those Astropaths are great.

Really cool! How long does each model take you? Blows my mind the stuff people can sculpt lol
-
Really cool! How long does each model take you? Blows my mind the stuff people can sculpt lol
Actual contact time (including putty-mixing and sculpting, NOT drying time)... probably between 10 and 15 hours. I tend to do small amounts at a time so the female Astropath was sculpted over two weeks. I tend to sculpt one at a time... but have done batches of up to 5 at a time before.

The latest jungle trooper, a comms specialist, is finished. The next one will be a trooper with a grenade launcher :) :

dwarf Poncho "Hey man you bleeding!" to dwarf Blain who replies "I ain't got no time to bleed!" :D :-*
:D Exactly ... The next one will probably be Billy.
The roles of each of these will be:
Dutch - Militarum Platoon Commander.
Poncho - Command squad special weapon.
Hawkins - Command squad comms.
Mac - Command squad medic.
Dillon - Command squad veteran.
Billy - Sly Marbo.
Blain - Sgt Harker.
-
Great job all around. I like them all so much, but most of all I love those astropaths with the shades. I love a Squat psyker and shades make them even better. That and a lady with a buzz-cut. Great stuff. :D

Astropaths are blind and sometimes have bandages/cloth over their eyes so I thought they needed shades to look a bit cooler :) .

Now that I've finished this one, I only have to finish a little Martian and I can get back to the Dwarves again :) :

All together:

Just Billy (Proxy Sly Marbo) to go now :) .

Fantastic! Your sculpts come alive and are full of personality!

Here's the next one.
This is Billy. He's the last of the jungle fighting team:

This is his team with the enemy that they are hunting:

That is the end of this little project so I can now get back to my Space Dwarf Army again :) .

Nice sculpts!

Nice sculpts!
Cheers :) .

They look great! If you know the movie characters (and who doesn't?), they can easily be recognized in that lineup. It's the attributes/weapons they carry of course, but also their body language/posing and maybe even a bit of facial features too 8)
Really solid work on this team!

Really solid work on this team!
Cheers :) . I have tried to theme them as best as I can with the movie characters... but give them beards and equipment that ties in with their WH40k unit stats. It doesn't always work but there's a bit of a familiar feel to these and I'm happy with that :) .
The eight of the sculpts have now been sent off for casting so hopefully, they work nicely and are able to be cast :) .
-
Excellent! Can't wait to see the super hero and martian in action at Salute!

Me too :) .

In other news, my sculpting muse has gone on holiday so I'm back painting again... This is the second infantry squad for the third platoon :) :
That's the whole unit but only eight need painting because two are already painted. I've finished the base-coat and wash stages now (wash still wet in the following pic) and will start the final highlights later today :) :
It's nice to be back painting again :) .

Nice work on those

They're all finished now :) :

The penultimate unit:

Just the command squad and a few "characters" to go now :) .
(EDIT - The guy, front left, now has the black parts of his ID disks painted ;) ).

They look nice painted!

Here's the last of the standard troop units for the army; the command squad for the third platoon:
... and this is the view of the army box (everything is painted :) ):
Now I just need the six miniatures to be created to complete the army... so I will be fettling until they are sorted :) .
-
The army fettling has begun...
... currently, I am converting a pair of advisers (air-force and artillery) in order to replace the two that have been overly converted with patches and ranks on their sleeves (these ones):
I have also decided to put together another platoon in order to use up some of the spare miniatures that I have accumulated. This platoon will be assembled like this:
Command - Officer, Medic, Comms, Sgt and Heavy Flamer.
Infantry Squad - Sgt, Comms, Flamer and 7x Lasgun.
Infantry Squad - Sgt, Comms, Flamer and 7x Lasgun.
Infantry Squad - Sgt, Comms, Flamer and 7x Lasgun.
Heavy Weapons Squad - 3x Autocannon and 3x Lasgun.
So far, I have selected the units and have put them into their own bags. Any conversion/painting work for this platoon will take second place to the existing army plans... and it won't form part of the army display that I'm planning to build (unless I change my mind).
Lots to do :) .
-
Nice, I really like the ,,nicotine made my grey beard yellow" guy lol
-
Nice, I really like the ,,nicotine made my grey beard yellow" guy lol
That one is a sort of a "self portrait" of me as a Dwarf... and when my beard grows, it is a mix of blonde/ginger and bright white... so I'm glad you like him but there's no nicotine :D !
In other news... Artillery Advisor:
Airforce Advisor:
These will be primed and painted for my army and WON'T be going for casting.

No huge beard? This must be sacrilege! (really nice work, love the sculpts)

The Oxygen-mask won't create a seal on a beard.
-
The Oxygen-mask won't create a seal on a beard.
THAT... plus the Royal Air Force never allowed beards until a few years ago (I was never allowed one while I served :( ... but I've made up for it since I left :D ) and I wanted the Airforce advisor to reflect that ethos.
-
The new Advisors have now been finished:
Now I'm just waiting for some Astropaths to finish the two Advisor units :) .
-
Brilliant stuff.
Two questions:
1. Are these ever for sale?
2. The crackle effect on the bases. What are you using for that?
-
In answer to your questions...
1. The 2 newest advisors are one-off conversions for my army. However, most of these sculpts are available from Macrocosm Miniatures:
https://www.macrocosm.co.uk/product-category/macrocosm/space-dwarves-macrocosm/
2. The crackle paint (texture for the bases) is Games Workshop's Martian Ironearth "technical paint". I HEAVILY paint it on the base and when it's dry, I wash it with Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil. Once that's dry, I then dry brush with Tuskgor Fur.
-
Thanks. :)

I recently went to Salute 52, at the ExCel centre in London. I had a great time and have put a blog post together, to share my thoughts. Here's the post:
https://insosworld.blogspot.com/2025/04/salute-52-plus-other-animals.html
There is also a hint at what direction the Servitor sculpts might take... so it may be worth a look :) .

If you are going from Aylesbury next year, if I am going you are welcome to a lift as I'm only about half an hour from there. Glad to see the Bunny/Badger game won most innovative again - they were robbed last year.
-
If you decide to go again in the future I would suggest switching to the Elizabeth Line at Liverpool Street. It's only three stops to Excel and a lot quicker and quieter than the DLR.. Crowds aside I hope you had a good time.

Never thought to go that way. I always took the tube to North Greenwich Station then the gondola over from the O2. Takes you right there and you usually miss crowds until you get to the Excel. It is a few pounds more and it sucks if it is windy.
-
Yeah my first use of the Lizzy line to Salute, much easier, SE train, change at Abbey Wood, over the bridge, Lizzy line, two stops there, nice :D
Beats the old not always running DLR on Salute days >:(
-
It was great to see that the Bunny Badgers won :) . Ben makes cracking scenery and Pete (?) comes up with some great rules and ideas. Then it's up to the rest of the gang to source and paint the miniatures... for the last few years, I have been sculpting random things that aren't necessarily readily available for them.
If I go again, I am likely to stay in London; as close to Salute as possible. The amount of travelling, the poor air quality and my dodgy lungs (long Covid), really took the spring out of my step so I don't want to be travelling so much or staying in the area for so long.
If I do happen to end up in Aylesbury again, @aliensurfer, I may take you up on the offer (that's very kind of you :) ).

In other news, I have got quite far with my servitor robot. The body just needs a few tiny details and then it'll be time to focus on the arms (normal, servo arm, plasma-cannon, heavy bolter and multi-melta):
It's getting there, though... which is good since it's the 5th or 6th attempt at a design for the Servitor robot...
-
I would say that this is definitely the one to keep - really great lines and a lovely look overall - can't wait to see it with some arms on.

It shouldn't be too long before the finished Servitors are added to the army... and with that in mind (to keep the momentum up) I decided to get the army out and see where we're at :) :

Everything that I have, that is destined for the ORIGINAL army plan, is painted :) .

Here's the latest update on the Servitor. This one has a standard arm and a servo arm (POORLY stuck on with Blu-tack):
I am in the process of making the three heavy weapons that can replace the servo arm but they are little more than wire covered with a layer of putty at the moment.
-
Very tidy sculpting Isno, lovely sharp edges on that suit.
-
Looks very clumsy, I like it!
-
Cheers :) .
I got the idea for the arms from a Gundam mecha... I thought the "gangly" arms looked very robotic and as a result, steers the design away from being a copy of the old Exo armour :) .
-
I've just finished the second Engineseer for the army :) :
Just 8 Servitors and 2 Astropaths to go (when they are made :) ).
-
I've just spend an enjoyable half hour or so catching up on this amazing thread!
Great work to create a whole army Inso!
-
Cheers :) . I'm glad you've enjoyed the project :) .
Here is the first of the heavy weapon arms for the Servitor; the Plasma Cannon:
The focus will now be on the Multi-Melta :) .
-
Love it. The right arm with the Plasma Cannon looks great, definitely got it spot on with that one. Not so sure about the left arm though - could you perhaps show it from different angles? It doesn't look to have the same aesthetic as the body and legs, it looks a bit too different to my eyes. Otherwise it's great and a worthy addition to your army.

Cheers :) . I agree that it has a different aesthetic... that was the plan. By having the arm elongated and with a "tentacle" movement system, it stopped it from looking like a "human" type of arm and instead made it look more robotic. This was a deliberate measure to stop the Servitor from looking like an old Squat Exo-Armour (from the '80s). It also lends itself towards a mechanical/technical maintenance job because it is a more flexible "tool".
If you look at the previous page, there is a 360 degree pic(s) of the Servitor with his Servo Arm as well :) .

Okies - got it now and I did miss the previous picture on this - I see why you did the arm like that and I get the idea behind it but it still looks a bit off to me - maybe its the arm and the hand; the hand is still quite humanoid while the arm isn't - to my eyes, either the arm needs to be more humanoid to fit with the hand or the hand needs to be more robotic/claw like perhaps (or elongate the fingers to gripping tentacles) to fit with the arm. Sorry Inso, I can be a very picky bugger when I see something like that - best probably to just ignore me! lol
-
Loving how far this Army has progressed and that I've been able to collect a fair amount of it, with hopefully more still to become available.
Overall I like the Servitor robot, but I agree that the left arm looks a little odd, giving a slight Orangutan-esque look.
Not an issue per se or a deal breaker and I'll be interested to see what it looks like painted up, but it's currently the only option for the left arm.
Is the Melta or Heavy Bolter going to be for the left side, allowing for dual ranged, ranged and melee and dual melee arrangements?

To answer your questions, the left arm will be the only left arm. The right arms are either a Servo Arm, Heavy Bolter, Multi-Melta or Plasma Cannon (as per the rules for an Engineseer's Servitor in WH40k). I am creating a proxy Astra Militarum army so I am pretty tied to what the options are.
The long arms may not be to everyone's taste so at some point, I may sort more "normally proportioned" arms... but it isn't high on my list (which is LONG :o ) .

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense.
No worries if you don't sculpt an alternative arm.
If I really want some alternatives; it should be on me, not you to realise them.
Had a quick play around over lunch with some assets I already had and guessed at some of the Servitor shoulder proportions.

That's a cool looking arm :) . For the use I am requiring, a power fist is a bit heavy (it needs to be more light-weight) but if you want a heavier one, then yours looks like it would work :) .
-
The Servitor and all its arms is now finished :) :
These will be sent off for casting once I have sculpted a rifle for another project (then everything will be sent off together :) ).
-
Very, very nice work, Inso. Congrats it really is a superb model.
-
Lovely work.
Looking forward to being able to purchase them, along with your other recent work.
-
Cheers :) .
Although I will be sculpting other Space Dwarfs and things to go with them, the Servitor is the final sculpt for my Squat Army project... so I'm really rather chuffed about it :) . That sculpt represents the final part of a six year project...
... so I guess I'll need to be adding tufts to bases, varnishing miniatures and creating a scenic base for the army... and then this topic/blog will be finished :o ...
Hopefully, it won't be long before the recent stuff gets cast up and put on the Macrocosm Miniatures site :) .
-
I have finally got some of the newer casts and have cleaned and primed the first three :) :
These are two Astropaths with a random adventurer, in between them :) .
I have also received the "Predator hunters", their enemy and the small diorama that I made (all in good numbers) so it shouldn't be too long before Chris does something for them on his site/through Kickstarter :) .
-
The two Astropaths are now painted :) :
Just the Servitors to go now... but while I'm waiting for those to be cast up, I'll be painting a few other miniatures :) .
-
This is the diorama I made a while back. I received some casts so was able to paint one up :) :
I have 20 copies, in resin, that I plan to sell as a limited release (with all proceeds going to the Royal British Legion charity) so I'll post more information when I'm ready to do so :) .
-
Another newly delivered cast; the Squat Adventurer :) :
I'm not sure what's coming next; while I wait for the Servitor to be delivered...
-
While I'm waiting for some Servitors to arrive, I thought I'd start work on an additional platoon of troops. These will be added to the army but won't be part of the planned display base; due to size restrictions. The platoon is unusual in the fact that it has three infantry squads, rather than the two in the other platoons. This platoon has flamers, auto-cannons and a heavy flamer. It consists of a command squad, three infantry squads and a heavy weapon squad... everything is converted and assembled, ready for paint, apart from the heavy weapon squad (as shown):
I'll be converting/assembling the heavy weapon squad next (assuming that no Servitors arrive any time soon) :) ...
-
On the cork, I've got a veteran commander to go alongside the predator team... but he's still WIP:
... and in other news, I've just received a parcel with the Servitor casts in (plus some rifles):
I will be prepping the Servitors this weekend... they are the last miniatures in my big army project :) .
-
The first Servitor:
only seven more to go :) .
-
Six more to go :) :

The next one has a Plasma Cannon :) .
-
The first of the Servitor units is complete:
One more to go and the army is finished :) .
-
Some WIP Space Dwarfs, today :) :

A small distraction...
Just needs a base and he's finished :) .
-
He's cool! Could work as a merchant or mage in both scifi and fantasy settings! 8)
-
"These are not the Servitor's you are looking for!" lol lol
-

Good idea :) .
He's cool! Could work as a merchant or mage in both scifi and fantasy settings! 8)
Cheers :) . He's a sculpt of a Dwarf version of Grigori Rasputin, "the mad monk" from Russia... a bit of a distraction but very usable in Sci-Fi and Fantasy :) .
-
...He's a sculpt of a Dwarf version of Grigori Rasputin, "the mad monk" from Russia...
Indeed, now that you mention it... :D
So who's going to poison, stab, shoot and then drown him? Or will he be a one-off?
-
There will be more but I have yet to be told what :) . I have a few more sculpts to get done and then information on the next one (a Czar) will be provided :) .
-
A finished squad of AK troopers, today :) :
I'm now sorting out a helmet to get mastered to add to a squad of these, once everything is cast up :) .
-
More great work. I love the "distraction" the bunching on the clothes at the back is awesome.
-
Great work ..
You're the Dwarf master or the Master of the dwarfs ?
??? ??? ??? ;)
Z
-
Cheers :) .
The distraction was something that popped up, out of the blue and there may be others to tie in with it at a later date... but they will be "Weird War" so I'll probably have a different thread for them :) .
I think Thane is a good term for my Dwarf sculpting obsession... a servant to my obsession :D !
On a side note, I've just finished this one and he'll go nicely with the Predator hunting team :) :
He's a Squat version of Colonel "Iron Hand" Straken of the Catachan Jungle Fighters :) . That means that all the characters for that army are covered now (Sly Marbo, Sgt Harker and Col Straken).
-
Well the sculpting is amazing. A dwarfs are happy to have you.
-
Thanks :) .
Here are the last five miniatures for the "official" display army:
I realised I needed a Lieutenant for the command platoon and here he is; pictured with the final four Servitors :) .
This project has been going on for over six years and it is now at a point where everything is painted! I still need to varnish everything, add tufts to the bases and build the display board... but this is a massive milestone because there is no more sculpting required :) .
Once everything is properly dry, I'll sort some army pix but for now, I'm just happy to have finished the troops :) .
-
Ah, one man and his dog...
Lovely figures and I can't wait for you to show us the finished army.
Now - you say there's no more sculpting required but does that mean an end to.the figures? Adventurers, camp followers, civilian advisors, mercenaries/contractors? Then there are one-off figures and "specials"? lol
