Title: In The Grim Darkness of the Future, I Do Whatever I Want (A few additions)
Post by: ZeroTwentythree on November 25, 2020, 05:50:50 AM
Longtime gamer of all genre (historical, fantasy, sci-fi.) I'm finally venturing back to the world of sci-fi.

Although I loved the concepts of Rogue Trader, the rules always seemed... difficult. For me, the heyday was small scale games of 2nd ed. which started to lose their appeal as the larger scale, tournament focused games of later 2nd ed and 3rd ed became the standard. That's as far as I got in 40k. I loved the original Necromunda, and more recently enjoyed some modern Kill Team. I'm also looking into several alternate sci-fi rules -- in particular solo rules like Five Parsecs. One of the frustrations of post-Rogue Trader 40k (for me) has been the rigid adherence to cliche & "canon."

Thus... Alt Trader: In The Grim Darkness of the Future, I Do Whatever I Want.

I think I summed up my initial revelation  on my blog. https://www.zerotwentythree.com/2020/09/sci-fi-future.html I think GOTHMOWER is a pretty strong contender for the name of my project and may replace Alt Trader.

Lately, though... I started painting!

Testing out the one paint style for space elf pirates, the crew of the Cold September.

Starting to paint the Meat Hating Robot Pirates, including kitbashing a kids yogurt pouch cap into a flamethrowing hoverbot.

Also, demo-bot is still here and waiting for action.

I hope it's apparent that this a fairly open old-school sci-fi project.

Have you had a look at Galactic Heroes?
That has revitalized my Sci-Fi.
Simple & fun.

Might also be worth keeping an eye on Stargrave, the new sci-if Frostgrave. Coming next year.
Your minis are nice, the robot thing is awesome, love the paint job.

Loving the approach to the project (Pulp Alley is my personal poison for Rogue Trader-ish games), and the miniatures you've done so far. Looking forward to seeing the project develop.

More painting progress... Mostly WIP. Blogger is acting wonky, just going to post the progress pics for the moment.

Him & the two in the photo above him are all from Effin Cool Miniatures.

I think I saw that a while ago and meant to come back & check them out. Thanks for the reminder.

I’ll also recommend Pulp Alley and Galactic Heroes.  Both a fairly easy sets to customize. Both are also very tongue in cheek, and don’t take themselves too seriously.

Another work in progress. This project has been simmering for years without progress so I hope I'm not being over the top with posts now that I've started.

The concept is that this guy along with the previous two are non-combatant 'bots who escaped their servitude and joined the pirate crew. He's a loader/porter, joining the nurse & harvester above. Since he is machine, yet (generally) anthropomorphic I combined the idea of a hi-viz vest with hazard striping from machines & inanimate objects. (The painting of which I still need to clean up a bit.  :? )

more posts the merrier, the paint job looks good already, and can't fault the logic of the application choice.

Its an interesting project, glad you have found the drive and time to add to it, keep the posts coming  :)

That yellow bot is superb. Love the wacky tongue in cheek humour of early 40k
The planet Birmingham black powder weaponry etc
Also like early necromunda /confrontation .
I thought about doing a take on it also incorporating some things from D.M. Cornishmen’s monster blood tattoo .

Great work Zerotwentythree and I like your blog posts, this project is very much in the Rogue Trader style. RT was always whatever you want it to be, that freedom is probably why I’ve struggled and failed to be part of the modern 40k scene (very much as you said). The biggest problem with actually playing RT is that was always very easy to put too much on the table (being like overexcited children) and slow the whole thing down so much it feels clunky. And blogger is an absolute nightmare currently (on the iPad you can’t see what you’re typing, it’s laborious and has ruined my blogging mojo - what little there was) I love your work keep it up.

3fingers my friend and I play Confrontation as much as we can and our ongoing project is to try and finish it (it was a converted WW2 - I think Stalingrad - ruleset) as big parts are missing. The hardest part is where they talk about modding your miniatures to show scars between games but most the time few if any chaps survived long enough lol.

023 - I’m looking forwards to seeing what you do

Thanks all!

Yes, I've got a fondness for the old RT humor & satire, and I definitely like smaller, scenario-driven skirmish games at this scale. (6mm is for big battles, tanks, etc! ;) )

Bases done on the three "civilian" recruits.

Prepped the next few figures. Being cast adrift for 40,000 years of unappreciated gardening can unhinge even the most peaceful of 'bots. (Er, "drones”).

I forgot to share this, I painted it weeks ago. I opted for a simple paintjob to let the (great) sculpt be the star. Wanted a simple utilitarian or maybe military look.

Yes, got the rules over the holidays and gave them a quick read. Unfortunately life's been extremely busy the past two months. But hopefully things slow down enough in the coming weeks that I can give the rules another read and try a solo game or two.

I'm working in painting some RT era Eldar pirates for the Old World Army Challenge, but managed to finish another 'bot that I had started quite a while ago. It's from Warlord's Antares range. As with the Diehard 'bot, I went with a simple, toned down color scheme. Shown with Kev Adams* in the second photo, to give a sense of scale

Thanks! I think I'm really picking through a big variety of old and modern miniatures ranges. I looked at the Antares range when I was hunting down robots and this guy called to me for whatever reason -- probably going to revisit their figures now that I'm jumping back into sci-fi.

Now that I'm moving into the future and hoping to do smaller, narrative style skirmishes, I figure I should start gathering a cast of supporting characters. So I've freshly painted a couple of figures....

...as well as rebasing some old figures to use in my new sci-fi setting...

Thanks. The greyscale guy was painted as part of an Oldhammer Forum yearly project. Each participant would paint a figure based on a theme and color scheme, and at the end one person's name was drawn and they received the entire set of figures. In 2017 we did an split theme - black & white inquisitorial retinue vs. rainbow gangers. I had difficulty deciding what to do for the black and white, and this little guy was the replaced by a better figure that I sent in. So he's been on my desk since then, never finished the base until now since I didn't know what to do with him yet.

Forum thread with pics: http://forum.oldhammer.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=13493

The concept I had behind him was that he was a synthetic humanoid/android type creation, and served as a tech assistant. I think that will still be his background going into my own developing project.

A VOR Neo Soviet, there's a line I've not seen in a while. Nice.

Thanks. I've got a squad of 9 that are partially painted except this one which was painted completely as a test subject. More figures lingering around for years, haha. I dug out two unopened neo-sov cyclops packs that are likely to see paint in the coming months.

I've also been revisiting some of the other Vor figures on the Iron Wind Metals site and may pick up a few at some point.

I forgot to mention in my previous update, I'm looking to identify the old Grenadier figure on the left. The base says Grenadier, (c) 1990, M423. I couldn't find a listing, but some of the other M### codes are orcs. However, this guy is stylistically a bit different from the other orcs I could find, and has two little horns on his head. Anyone have an ID?

He's from the Grenadier Shadowrun line. A boxed set called DMZ:

Lovely work on this project. I like 'mix and match' projects not tied to a particular games system's figures or rules.

On this basis I'm repainting old figures and painting bare lead that's been far too long in the 'to do' pile, with the intention of doing something along the lines of Rogue Trader, but a different background/races and in a more pulpy style. I'm aiming to use the Galactic Heroes rules from Wiley Games, as they are easy to use and very adaptable.

I forgot to post my January entry in the Old World Army Challenge (http://oldworldarmychallenge.blogspot.com/) a few weeks ago!  :o

I painted my first two squads of Eldar pirates. A bit of background and some teaser pics of what's still to come on the OWAC blog: http://oldworldarmychallenge.blogspot.com/2021/01/zerotwentythrees-january-eldar-pirates.html

I'm also continuing to paint more robots. Such as Eye, Robot. A scratch built light hoverbot.

Nice work.  I especially like the Eldar, that's a very vibrant colour scheme.  I'm contemplating my own small corsair force at some point, and am torn between using the old 2nd ed Guardians and the new not so old plastic guardians as the main figures.  Seeing your figures, I'm minded to go with the old school ones.

and yes, wouldn't have thought it was humanly possible to paint those checked stockings as exactly as you have ... superb.

Thanks. I'm inspired by Rogue Trader, but not strictly beholden to it. Probably obvious by now...  ;)

Do it! :D The Eldar haven't evolved too far off the original concepts and have always been a good range of figures (in my opinion.) But I've still got a soft spot for the RT era figures, which are a little quirky, but are also the first 40k figures I bought (before even getting the book). So I'm indulging in nostalgia with that part of this project.

Thank you. I've had some practice with checks & tartans before. But this one was a challenge because of the curved surfaces, such as trying to keep consistent while reducing from the calf area to the ankle.

Discordant engines struggled to keep the awkward vessel on a smooth trajectory. The coffin-like slab of reinforced plasteel eventually settled among the smouldering corpses that it's multi-laser had annihilated moments before.

The lone bio-meat crewman jumped out of the hatch and surveyed his surroundings. "Mrs.! Up on the ridge, 70 degrees." A fusillade of red laserfire lit the dim haze and the pieces of three more guards fell to the ground. He sat down on the hull of the GOTHMOWER and waited for the rest of the raiding party to catch up.

GOTHMOWER is the fusion of several  sources of inspiration. Rather than recount the initial brainstorm here, I will just direct you to the story I posted on my personal blog (https://www.zerotwentythree.com/2020/09/sci-fi-future.html). When I received a mystery package from Shadespyre that included the plastic housing from some sort of remote-control, I knew I had the chassis. After the model was put together and primed, I decided to stick with a good & gothy black, black, dark grey, more black, and little bit of red color scheme.

I had initially planned to paint another ten infantry for February, but that didn't work out for various reasons. During one of the brief painting sessions in which I tried to paint some infantry, one final reference for inspiration hit me.

While not part of the original plan -- at least not on a conscious level -- I was already 90% of the way there. So I painted a face and glued decapitated statue head (from a more suitable subject matter). After far too much whiskey, I painted a checkered band on the ass-end of it as one final nod to the Deathmobile. I had previously been planning to paint the "GOTHMOWER" name on it in similar lettering, but decided that would detract too much from the Eldar-ness of it.

The grav attack technically doesn't need a crew. It's equipped with auto-drive & auto-aim. But if I stick with the minimum requirements of the army list, I've got more heroes than I know what to do with. The list gives the option to make heroes crew for the grav attack, and it inspired me to convert a figure as such.

Nik is a former cargo pilot who worked the most dangerous sectors of the galaxy before joining the crew of the Cold September. More comfortable in a pilot seat than on his feet, he saw an opportunity on one of his first raids with the pirate crew and captured an imperial PDF grav attack. Space being confined on the September, the crew were initially reluctant to bring the captured machine on board. Since then, they have come to appreciate the additional quickly deployed fire support it offers.

GOTHMOWER has been modified from its original imperial configuration, shuriken catapults and a multi-laser replacing the original bolt-weapons, and new auto-drive & auto-fire system installed -- an infinity circuit Nik refers to as "The Mrs."

I recently read about a species of snail that forms a shell of iron, and thought it would be a cool idea to scale that up and use some discarded alien mega-snail shells as terrain.

Thank you! I'm trying to have fun and not get too serious about it -- so I appreciate that complement!

I'm hard at work on my March entry for the Old World Army Challenge. And halfway through the month I'm almost halfway there. I have two squads of five to paint, and have finished the first four... I just need to stay focused and finish painting at least the first squad of Eldar this weekend.

You know what the Eldar need? Some entertainment. Yeah, that's it. They want to watch a space-half-orc battling a space-purple worm. Better get on that right away....

... yeah, they like that.

Oh... it's Sunday night and I haven't finished the fifth squad member nor started the rest of this month's goal.  :o

Also made some small terrain bits for the photo backgrounds (and hopefully gamin soon.)

I mentioned previously that I painted some discarded mega-fauna shells as terrain inspired by real world snails that produce shells of iron. This Eldar has stumbled across a live specimen!

This is really great stuff!  Some minis that I really like and remind me of the quirky Rogue-Trader stuff are actually newer models: the Ghar from Beyond the Gates of Antares, especially the Ghar Outcasts and Rebels.  They are sort of a spin on Space Orks, but weak in the limbs!  :)

Love the old minis!

That's oddly similar to my own advice, that I keep failing to take   ::)

I work too much. thats the issue 12 or 16 hours is not unusual while still being on "standby". Techy nonsense, and cheap bosses for you.

But you know what, with the stargraves, rogue stars, and other sci-fi rules on the shelves,

OK, let me find some time somehow to make a "crew", If nothing else. Nothing instant, but I NEED to start posting piccies and achieving more,

even if you do it better :)

I definitely understand that. I'm not exactly working quite that many hours, but working at home, plus making sure my daughter (who is also still remote learning at home) is keeping up with her schoolwork, getting lunch, and other household maintenance, it's been very difficult to find painting time lately. I've really struggled to get my monthly entry in for this year's challenge. But when I do it's a nice escape from the stress and everything else. I wish you luck in finding at least a little time to paint.

It's been a struggle to find time to paint, but I managed to get my last (June) entry for the Old World Army Challenge completed.

There will be a wrap-up post coming soon, complete with photo(s) of the full OWAC band of Eldar Pirates painted over the last six months.

At some point I also painted this RoboKali. Plastic figure from eBay, not sure of the origin/manufacturer. It will be added to my robot revolutionaries. Eldar included for scale comparison.

I've finished my 10 figure painting challenge! Plus the two worms posted previously, and some new adversaries -- Spiders From Mars and Astro-Zombies.  :D I decided to paint the spiders as a quick & cheap fix until I get some more alien "bugs" but I'm becoming fond of their simple charm.

Those look excellent! I like the mix of crew figures, they give the impression of being the dregs collected on half a dozen worlds. The spiders and zombies look sharp too!

Thanks!

I've been doing some more painting over the holiday, even though I don't have much time off work (like... only one day  :-[ )

Painted the rest of the purple worms, for a total of 6. Also some gangers from Grenadier & Bad Squiddo, and a weird little Spaven mutant/familiar.

Two last figures to end the year, and wrap up one faction of adversaries for some (hopefully) Five Parsecs gaming in the new year! They're both from the old Grenadier Future Wars range.

I wrote up a year end/start post on my blog, and also set up a couple of pages to track & show off my collecting & painting progress for Five Parsecs (and/or other sci-fi gaming) and my crew.

The figure on the left is new (to me). It was a gift, so not sure where it came from. It reminded me of Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, so I used that as inspiration for the painting. The figure on the right was painted well over 25 years ago, but just now was put on a base. I figure it will make a good alien beast.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi4iJaJ7do7bMGWfeS-Ec5KXqJskgFyHyE6NK3jvf0ObSS87nNhqYfTp58hOX4MX3tylSKOLiTHzRfjKBz8aw7nT6oRE0BCkJ2rvoTuJ-m-5y698byem9DL0qpY8PMf1tcHsCoeXTigLqtL6G3C5OHaXs09SNOCB6wj-p_YGg06VvZ3vSSpT9nkbgz_-Q=s800)

I recently found some more painted Spaven hidden away in a box, so I set up a glamor shot. Dr. Squidclops vs. the Spaven.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjaL9TUIDVwOyEj6nbytExSRGtZXswgLcwI_59BvtfJaG9CIInplonFEPBmUG3TQK0ya67d6v77U9hRFbq5OA0j47fNP41x1km3HEkr9zZknTpeo7Xj_pLndyghq9zqenpjqCYsbZLudlfHdRywEzSkDYdM6Vb7-ik-W_fZtg02DhpCzeAJzNwptTKE0g=s800)

I'm still working on painting crew and adversaries for Five Parsecs From Home. I've been stuck on what figures to use for K'Erin, but think I sorted that out. Here's my test figure.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi2gkh5m69KFK2ShR-OLkV9AebXI4xfHYPis-kwozfsR3AZpfvBSPNYKnFA7mdkeFAXJNjecsOH6d2LcgfCgmGY2MdFnMtWp8CNwi2zheKPQeC32Jbnue9_m9nJyp_oahhAOOlLpk8VwO5nCDLCbZ7owdIFDWSCKpwgr_XYklpDczhXKYvLEBX4E8ONKw=s800)

Very nice figures - and great to see some of the weirder alien models too. :)

I also saw on your blog that you were musing on terrain for 5 Parsecs, and that you were after a few suggestions. I would say that if you look at Battlesystems' cardboard terrain packs for what sort of density fills a 2'x2' table, that you'll be on the right track. It's also a pretty good steer on what sort of environments might be worth thing about. (Even though getting and setting up their terrain is not what you're likely after, I'm just putting them forward to look at and use as inspiration). Core Space, also by Battlesystems, is a complete game as wells as terrain, and the models it has a pretty much perfect for 5P too (the game itself is also pretty good, and can be played solo too...).

Another cheap option might be the newer-style Infinity terrain packs (like "Salvora Governmental Complex", "Daedalus Gate", and "Kaldstrom") - two of those should be plenty for a small board, and everything is pre-printed, double-sided, on heavy card stock (unlike the earlier packs which were very flimsy cereal packet type stuff). The double-sided aspect is worth noting, as it means that with two packs of the same set, building one "inside out" gives you two different-looking sets of complimentary terrain.

If these are all a bit too cyberpunk for you, you could also look at terrain available for Star Wars Legion for some ideas, as well as Rogue Trader. In fact, you could probably transpose RT entirely into the 5P setting just fine, and set your crew up as a new newly-minted Rogue Trader on adventures in the Eastern Fringe! ;)

Thank you, I appreciate the suggestions. I had briefly looked at Core Space because I saw numerous mentions of the game on the 5P FB group. Just went back and looked at those options plus the Battlesystems. My curiosity is piqued! I'm definitely interested in some of the terrain, but now that you mention solo play I'm also curious about the rules. I'll have to look into it more.

My 5P crew/setting is going to be like a mix of RT and 5P settings. My Precursors are Eldar, scrappers are squats. No plans for marines, though.  It's the fare fringe of Imperial space.

I am excited to see you work your way through 5PFH. I bought the book a couple of months ago and have started collecting some figures for it. I already have some Algoryn from WG that I will using as K'Erin. Although I have never played Beyond The Gates of Antares I quite like a lot of the figures in the range and I can see myself using some of them in 5PFH.

I have or at least *had* all of those at some point. A few of them are currently on my desk awaiting bases like the one I posted above. All from Hobby Products Metal Magic range when I got them. I think at least some of them are still in production, but split between a few different companies?

New stuff! I've mostly been painting undead for the fantasy Old World Army Challenge (http://oldworldarmychallenge.blogspot.com/). But in-between I'm still trying to put together a crew and opponents for a solo Five Parsecs campaign. Almost done with the crew, a combination of figures I previously painted and a few new ones.

For the 2021 OWAC I painted old RT era Eldar, which I posted here. Last month I finished one each of the 2nd ed. Wraithguard as companions for the older Ghost Warriors, since they seem strongly related in the evolution of the game.

I live just outside Cleveland, OH, USA. Our climate and location has always meant we have some unpredictable winter weather. But this year has been crazy. The last few weeks have beeen cycling from single digit temperature to sunny weather in the mid-50's. We've had 12"+ of snow in a single day, then it melts,  we get torrential rainstorms, then back to sub-freezing weather and the world is ice, and back to snow drifts up to our windowsills. Today we had a marvelous conjunction of sun, (relatively) mild temperatures, and WEEKEND. So grilling season has started!  ;D

Yes, Killzone was a fun setting. I always wanted to use fir 40k, where it would have been so much more fun than Necromunda‘s IgoUgo.

Anyway, great painting. And I do love what you did to the okd Spacelords sculpt. Another nice system that has been forgotten.

I have had five games of 5 Parsecs now and I am absolutely loving it.

On your point about terrain though I have found that some of the battles can be over really quickly. My crew might be an outlier mind. The RNG in the crew setup and the first couple of turns was extremely beneficial so I have a hyper blaster and two autoguns. Nice, long range weapons that put down many shots. Almost every opponent I have met is usually outranged and has to walk into this wall of lead/blaster fire before they can even take a bead. I am not complaining as I am sure the the RNG Karma bubble will reverse direction soon but it has meant that I spend three times as long putting down lots of lovely terrain and scatter and foilage as I do running the combat. I am mulling the idea of slimming down the scatter or having more pre-built 'pieces' - a couple of pallets with boxes/barrels glued on a base.

Something to bear in mind when you are putting together terrain for your games.

Go this way. It also aids storage as terrain that can be
spread over a wide area during the game, can (if basing
has been pre thought) fit neatly into a box. I have drawn
the various outlines on the base of the box (ain't Sharpie
pens wonderful) so I know what goes where. Put a letter
under each outline, & also on the right spot in the box.
Putting away becomes a doddle.

This haunts my every attempt to set up a game :'( I have a crew, some scribbles of a backstory, enough scenery to start with, but the fear of the game being over in two rounds or, alternatively, the never ending game, stops me every time.

Five Parsecs has some nice pre-game bits, and I do like the thought of the crew being there for a reason, so, must conquer fear (I'm busy reading Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, so perhaps I should put the title into practise :D)

Agreed also on the Algoryn. I have a command squad painted and some more in the cupboard, and they have a nice elder race feel to them

Thank you for all the feedback on the game, terrain, and painting. I'm getting closer to actually playing -- I hope!  lol I do think terrain is the next priority, though I also need a squad of generic soldier/mercenary types as well. Both should go to the top of my to-do list. (Until I get sidetracked...  lol )

I don't remember what blog, post, or social media group led me to these, but I picked up some super cheap plastic toy robots and speed painted them with GW contrast paint & washes. They will serve as security/war bots for Five Parsecs for now. Maybe I will replace them, maybe they will grow on me and stick around. But for now they are a quick and cheap way to get another squad into the pool of figures available for gaming.

I bought them on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B093YZFYW7?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details

There are 4 different figures. In order to get slightly more variety, I cut one of each of the ones I painted at the waist and rotated them before pinning & gluing back in place. There are a some that were "warped" with arms or legs bent at odd angles. I'm going to cut those up for wreckage/casualty markers.

For enemies that are just basically there to get gunned down, this is a simple and efficient solution. I'm getting less and less interested in spending time painting up enemies for my crew to maim. I like painting the crew figures, but I'm a slow painter, and being able to slap paint around and call it a day is very alluring. Particularly if you aren't sure if you need five or 15 enemies for a game.

I'm also following up on a pair of figures I painted last year as "avatars" of Life & Death for fantasy gaming. I decided they are eternal, so need figures based to match my sci-fi project as well. I just finished painting Death. Life is half-finished on the painting table and should be finished soon. The Astro Zombies I painted recently seem a natural match for Death, but I'm not sure what/who to use along with Life.

I have painted the next set of antagonists, and this is a big one. They can fill the role of various security forces, military types, mercenaries, etc. I will eventually paint a few more groups of figures and get more specific. But this will get me gaming quicker! Just a few more factions to get to what I feel will be a good minimum to start.

I also had the crew pose for a holiday themed photo on Sunday.  ; lol

These little fellas will serve as Void Rippers for Five Parsecs, and probably other roles in both sci-fi & fantasy games.

Thank you! I have been participating in a fantasy painting challenge since the beginning of the year, but now that it is over I am switching gears. I have some scavengers started on the painting table right now. Also just starting to experiment with sculpting & casting some alien fungi.

So I've got something like a New Year resolution, except it wasn't really that. Rather it was a result of me complaining on Instagram about how much that format has failed to keep me in touch with the people and projects that I like, and a realization that forums such as this are more personal, less "curated" by algorithms or filled with ads, and get me the content that I want to see (YOURS!) The twist is convenience... most of my personal time is when I am away from a computer and apps like IG and other just work better on a phone. But I have a new 2-in1 PC that's a little more portable than my old 17" beast and although it's going to spend a lot of time docked on a desk for work, I'm hoping to use it to get back to forums like Lead Adventure!

So it's been about six months since my last entry and I STILL haven't actually played Five Parsecs or any sci-fi games (I've been buying/reading several other sets of rules too.) But I have done some painting.

Ages ago I took a course in small scale resin casting with a local artist We each made a quick, small sculpt then created a mold, and made several castings.

After messing around with resin and jewelry molds with my daughter earlier this year, I pulled out the old silicone mold and... it has way more life in it than expected! So I've been messing around with clear resin and inks, casting gems with/for my daughter and making more of these little things that I see as the first of several potential "alien fungi" for gaming terrain. I painted one of the original castings up just before I started my casting experiments. Here's where I am at today, the blue/sapphire was my latest color. Regardless of the inks & colors, my plan is to paint them. The inks/colors are for me to experiment with before trying to produce something with that sort of translucent quality in a more refined finial format.

These are some board game figures I bought from eBay and painted with color-shifting paints and ink. (They will serve as Distorts for Five Parsecs.)

I painted some Reaper dinosaur figures that I picked up on eBay to fill the role of Carnivore Chasers & Razor Lizards in Five Parsecs. These were speed-painted, using Citadel contrast paints for the color. Dinosaurs in space? "Life, uh, finds a way." ;)

Although they initially earned their living as a salvage crew, some members of the Belegost eventually turned to mercenary work. Particularly some of the older crew who had fought many battles defending their claims, eventually realized they could cut out the salvage work and render services based on their hard earned battle prowess -- usually at a better wage. So it was that the Belegost Scrap Wagon diversified their operations into a salvage wing and a mercenary wing. The Anvil and the Hammer, as they started calling it, based on the ancient traditions of their people.

As explained above, I am painting up the Skull & Crown "Space Scrappers" and Satyr Art Studio space dwarfs with two sub-factions inspired by two different aesthetics within among the figures. The more heavily armored become the mercenaries, and the less armored figures (also with less military looking weapons in many cases) become the salvage crew. I'll keep the color palettes similar, but with more variety among the salvage crew.

I finally finished my planetary nomads / scavengers.  All Mark Copplestone sculpted figures, a mix of old and not-totally-old-but-not-exactly-new. ;)

This was my test figure for a squad of goblin space pirates. Figures from Alternative Armies.

Although mainstream Eldar society disregards it, and most of the the other races know little of or care even less for it, there is a theory that the minor race known as "Goblins" in the Traders's Tongue are actually an offshoot of the Eldar. The basis of this theory is that the Melkor Event on the remote, and some say cursed, moon Thangorodrim. The moon had been settled by a small group of Eldar explorers/entrepreneurs looking for mineral wealth. Although it is certain that *something* was found there, no one knows exactly what. The Event instantaneously transformed the moon into a dark mountainous, crystalline mass and presumably wiped out all life inhabiting it. The final coherent transmission from the last remaining Eldar mining station simply reported that it was, "something wonderful."

I never finished the squad, which were supposed to be my "Orctober" challenge.

Originally I had different plans for these two, but they ended up being my test figures for a small mercenary band. Figures from Satyr Art Studio.

I read your post on IG some days ago and fully agree—thing is good old forums are slowly dying. People use FB (even worse if you ask me), reddit (never knew why) or IG. Thank goodness LAF is still pretty active. TMP, however, has significantly declined, Frothers is dead (or worse), Oldhammer is vanishing and others mostly concentrate on GW and other big stuff.
Even worse with blogs…

Apart from being able to access the information I want without getting disturbed by bodybuilders „accidentally“ wearing yoga pants and filming their dubious stretches, miniatures world and political madness, forums are much better (the only way?) to archive information. I often look up older threads here or at TMP to get ideas for 15mm, for instance.

Your update looks splendid, and it’s nice that you can enjoy time with your daughter doing casts of jewellery. My favorite part, however were the space goblins!

May I ask where you got theye plastic „distorts“ from? They look cool and might work in 15mm, too.

Forgot to answer this:

Yeah, if you hadn’t an Amiga (or PC), it’s a fairly obscure title. Quite good but not sure if it wanted to go Blade Runner or Monty Python.

Good to see you back! :)

Your comments on posting over various media sites are interesting, and seem to broadly correlate with others'. Namely, that whilst there is certain a convenience in using FB, IG, and others, plus the immediacy of getting "likes" etc on what you post, the overall experience seems to be rather more fleeting and harder to look back on to see your progress. From the point of view of people like myself who avoid social media, it's virtually impossible to find older posts or to stumble onto much of anything when searching. I gather that Google also downgrades search results from Wordpress too, so finding new material to enjoy that way is also more difficult.  :?

Anyway, I like the Satyr Art Studio figures - they're new to me, but I gather they're out of production now?

Yay - welcome back - great update.

The "modern" approach of short soundbites and only data relevant is the latest is, as others are commenting too, the preferred way today.

Why do we want all that old/off-trend/not advertised stuff?

Because we do. at least LAF is still going strong.

The second half of 2022 was difficult because work got busy, I was traveling a lot, and if I had free time I didn't want to be in front of a computer. But making forum updates is difficult on a phone. Ultimately I thought about how much I missed seeing other people's projects, being able to search out specific things, and the more fact that forums are more "social" than "social networks" are. I don't always respond as much on other people's projects as I'd like (again, I hate "typing" on a phone) but I hope to improve. After my rant on Instagram and some thoughtful responses from other people, I started thinking about that "be part of the solution, not part of the problem" thing. I'll still use IG, and post in the Oldhammer Community on FB, but I want to get back to LAF, my blog (and other people's blogs*) and maybe some other forums.

*When Google killed Reader that was devastating to me. I used it to keep up with a whole list of people/projects on Blogger. I used Feedly to try to keep up, I don't remember if it was just the interface or what but it didn't last long for me. I need to look back into that and see who's still blogging. That was one of my favorite formats, where each blogger was essentially the center of the own "forum" in a sense. On that topic, this was an interesting article on personal blogging vs. big social media. https://www.theverge.com/23513418/bring-back-personal-blogging

The distorts are large, those bases are probably around 40mm. I got them on eBay, they are from a Boardgame, "Fireteam Zero."

I picked up some new resin, dyes, and some gem moulds for her and mould making silicone for me. We're on hold until the weather warms up, as I prefer doing the casting in the garage to avoid any fumes in the house.

Good to see you back! :)

Thanks! I have gone through a couple of social media purges in the past few years. Mostly Facebook, where I first unfriended everyone except maybe a 20-ish close friends/family, then a few months ago I dropped everyone other than my wife. At this point I only use it to keep up with a few hobby groups/communities and a couple of stupid but amusing meme pages. lol But it's still got that brief, shallow feeling you mention above.

Satyr figures seem to come & go. I get the impression that sculpts are cast in a big batch and sold while stock lasts, and then replaced by newer figures/projects. Some of them have found permanent homes with other small manufacturers (like Troll Soup.) I don't think the sister marines are available currently, not sure about all of the space dwarfs either.  https://satyrartstudio.ecwid.com/

Thanks! I experimented with some resin a while ago and I'm looking forward to trying some more. In addition to the funky fungi above, I had a set of Fomorian/Fimir heads and tails I sculpted and cast for converting other figures that I had mixed results with. (Project currently languishing...)

Work is going to be busy most of January, and my current hobby focus is on the Old World Army Challenge, so I may not be posting many updates in the Future Wars forum. But I'm hoping to catch up on other people's projects while I spend quite a bit of time traveling! More space goblins, sisters, and dwarfs are still ready and waiting for paint on my desk, though! A few terrain projects as well.

Ooh! (Or is that "Ooo"?) I realized I didn't post the small follow up to my diversion into Adventure in one of my previous entries.

I felt that Finn & Jake needed some friends. Just a lighthearted side project. Maybe I'll do more, maybe not.

So far I came up with Reaper's "dire penguins" and a slime, on which I added a scratch built tiara to (try to) match that of Slime Princess. Just like Finn & Jake, she's gotten older and, er, evolved/devolved a bit.  lol

Long time no update!

Life has been.... busy and complex. It was all I could do to get through the bare minimums for the Old World Army Challenge (see the Fantasy Adventures forum). But I'm catching up a bit here.

It's funny, I've been planning and painting and rolled two separate crews (1st ed. & 2nd ed.) but still haven't played Five Parsecs! (Or Planet 28!) I've been thinking about the Five Parsecs a bit lately, and how there's a of off-table development involved and I think that's appealing to my currently limited time & space for gaming.

Anyway, catching up...

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyZ3bjYpTu7cbb3VS_JbyJWbln3iqvJ8RHt6pCp8ypbb1IbC6jQrixrE3iq1XgFqH1aeGvbIyyAWm-8UIhhV_gq47N5DP2P5qPSrvBpLYwGLqzDgXVhY85d8lC6PCeu-ZLrLSe59UI7Nr5gbWd6j6wj2Ry9z5zHtLwMVNYISQ2THxx017Dr_xUqggu84vv/s800/5pbeast.jpg)

I painted this big fella months ago. Not sure what it is, how I'll use it, but it looked like a great sci-fi beastie. Its a plastic board game mini that came with the figures I used as Distorts.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzlcjryoBoVSduCGNFCMmYuoW40UxbDdcYSA8S9MhuTFdffOvZsTtfN6gCaJFV8D2vbi2rMICGYxcTVx_fygdnKpKOSdWwzzblVMSy2DdoEUVR61XzAFwl_TOOESztLKuqiL_JcuHJRZBSttC5tbpzSD2U7muaDUw6LBY4h6_TJ1OGv1MnyVd6L1DqAPlm/s800/5peternals.jpg)

I posted some of these previously, but not all. Here's a group shot of my "Eternals" I have both fantasy and sci-fi versions of each figures (mostly just basing differences.) They are from left to right, a/the Geier, one of my own sculpts that was briefly in production at a small manufacturer; the avatar of Death, a figure of complex and interesting history but now available from Ral Partha Europe; the avatar of Life, an unassuming figure and perfect foil for Death, from Reaper Miniatures; and lastly, Kev, a self-portrait limited edition sculpt by Kev Adams from Wargames Foundry. Somehow I ended up with two Kev figures. One acted (appropriately) as a hero in my now-gone goblin army for many years. Since I had another, I recently figured I may as well paint him up find a role for him in some sci-fi games!

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXrLXE6f3Js_pIdVLpklLYiGNKfBEXLzZ9jZBUuc-U9wgmm_GMsiojHpBTx2Gcpv1XXn60Oh61hfFA-cWbgZUdFvCBgqOMjHps4esyAHQpN5tUjmLhcUJxiT11Ce8eW-DO3tKMFNqx6CO0Buj3_2RZhDcGfPD-tI2CpvSTJmpAfzBcKRhJDCMg_VtPOKo6/s800/5pabduc.jpg)

Lastly, some recent figures. I'll be using these as Abductors for Five Parsecs. I was going to leave them out of my games, but saw these Reaper Bones figures at very affordable prices. But I was underwhelmed by the bent poses (tried fixing them with heat & ice water several times), soft detail, and difficult mold lines. I ended up doing a fairly quick paint job on them just to get them over with because I couldn't muster any additional enthusiasm for them. The photo is a bit rough, they do look half decent other than three of them leaning at awkward/unnatural angles.

Thanks. I've been considering it more and made some additions. My plan is to prep as many figures (and terrain?) as I can in October. That should also start me gaming sooner. I enjoy the "theater" of miniatures gaming, so I usually prefer to have everything painted before it goes on the table, but I can make some exceptions. Since it's a solo game, I don't think my opponent will object. ;)

Here's where I am now. I added some more figures to the table.

I'm continuing to prep & prime as many figures as possible for Five Parsecs through the end of this month (October '23). Then I'll start my #FMFPF challenge.  But I also need to get some terrain on the table if I'm going to actually play! So I am both prepping and even painting some of that already.

I found bits for most of (3) RTB01 marines. The top green figure is the last remainder from my original 80's Mantis Warrior army. (Started painting them purple but switched when the Badab War article came out in White Dwarf.) Not sure where/when I acquired the other two raw blue marines. But alas, I am missing a beakie/beekee head! Maybe if I beg on social media some fortunate soul will have a spare one for me. ;)

Should have mentioned, I'm in the US so before begging for RTB01 beaky heads, overseas shipping will probably be prohibitive.

I have started my own personal painting challenge, as mentioned previously. I will try to paint 5 Five Parsecs From Home factions in five months, along with a little terrain each month so I can get some games in as well! November is my first month and am ahead of schedule, I've already completed ten 'bots to use as a Soulless task force, painted to match two similar figures I painted a few years ago. Also painted some small its of terrain ("atmospheric harvesters and control module" made from various plastic packaging) and a couple of other bonus figures.

Two bonus figures....

Tiny alien. (Yes, I know it's a nurgling, but the orange paint makes it seem like it could be some other sort of alien nuisance. :) )

And this figure from Satyr Art Studio. I'm painting a mercenary company of the Satyr sisters (two test-paint figures in background) and figured this one would look good as a renegade from the company. I love the RT inspired gun!

I had this idea that Soulless could upload to a standard bot chassis, as long as the processor part is compatible with the Soulless network (this is since I want to use Ion Age Grima robots both as Soulless and guard bots in my Five Parsecs campaign).

December's entry in my own personal "Five Months From Painted Factions" AKA: FMFPF. It's pronounced "Ffmpff-Pff".  lol

Pirates. Space Pirates. Goblin Space Pirates. They're from the Ion Age range, currently produced by Alternative Armies. Fairly large figures, I had to used 30mm bases, so the pic may be a bit misleading if you assume those are 25mm bases.

No one knows the exact origins of the pirates referred to as "goblins" in the Trader Tongue. There are few people who care. But it is rumored that they may be a product of the "Melkor Event" in the fringe Thangorodrim System that doomed a small Eldar mercantile colony.

My slacker painting from this week. First is Orbus, a sentient sphere of what appears to be some sort of plasma like matter. No one knows for sure. Orbus is literally a pearlescent bead on a stick. I didn't even paint it. Just drill a hole, make a base, and glue it on the stick. My laziest figure ever and I make no appologies!  lol

Next to that is the second of the two D&D nothics that came in the pack. One is for D&D (which is a new thing, I'm sure I'l be posting about it in the fantasy form), the other I thought would make a good sci-fi alien or mutant. Super quick paint job, mostly just abase coat, wash, then a few details. I almost want a whole squad of them now.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH_0FtgKeoMaZTpvZ_QVBuwFhp1K29z5t1YXPGARZp6_NDrTwU4kmGhT7bHVeTrdjI-iZ-_M6pOjJ91_Acg_r4bBhxjOKJ9JSWcayu7On3xJHhpmuybxEliqdGpg3PUvfHaOAOatBf5nHXQBMcRo257hoDFpcAsOwHj0UggDkYwSNFmnNONp55ktKXh0D_/s800/1000044487.jpg)

Eru-Kin and jagua figure from Knightmare Games. I will be using Eru-Kin for K'Erin in Five Parsecs From Home. You can almost rearrange the the letters to shift between the two names. Maybe the apostrophe is for the "u"? It's a sign that this is the way. This particular figure will be a member of my crew. (But not his pet.) I had been looking for an excuse to buy & paint some of these figures for a long time -- they're really great sculpts!

Not too much movement here, but I've had a very strange idea.

Maybe it's best to just visit the plog to understand.... https://www.zerotwentythree.com/2024/02/five-bananas-from-home.html

Since the initial post, I have found/biuilt Fleegle, Bingo, and Drooper. Snork should arrive from eBay in the next few days.

There's some fantastic work going on in this "blog" :) . The Banana Splits will be a great addition :) .

If, by any chance, you are looking to have them in buggy format, you could do worse than the buggies in this link (half way down):
