Title: [COMMERCIAL] STAR SCHLOCK: Minis inspired by 70s and 80s sci-fi.
Post by: 1000foot on 28 February 2021, 01:56:41 AM
Hello there fellow miniature enthusiasts! I've been working on a set of miniatures and rules for sci-fi gaming that draws inspiration from the films, television and comics of the 70s and 80s. I finally have the project in shape to start bringing it to Kickstarter and I thought I'd give you a heads up in case you'd be interested in this sort of thing.

I'll be producing some sci-fi troops first:

But I have half a dozen other singles that will be available as add-ons:

If this sounds like your sort of thing, I encourage you to sign up for updates on my website (https://www.starschlock.com/). Happy gaming!

I hadn't considered Lensmen, but I'll take a look! My early cutoff date is 1968, but it looks like some later Lensmen books and adaptations were lingering into the 80's, so it might work.

It helps that (as the grand daddy of space opera) the characters often fit the mold of "ģeneric sci fi", with Kimball Kinnison (main character) just  wearing a silvery-grey uniform, raygun and wrist mounted lens.

The figures with capes on my website were proof of concept figures using parts I sculpted as well as bits kitbashed from plastic kits. I intend to release a version of the Astroguards with capes, but they won't be ready for this Kickstarter. If my initial Kickstarter is a success I intend to create a second shortly after fulfilling the first to continue expanding the line. I hope to get the caped Royal Astroguards into that second Kickstarter.

When is this kickstarter?

Very soon! The Kickstarter page is 90% done, I have one more stretch goal sculpt I am finishing up this week, and the preview page should be up in April. I don't want to commit to a date in case some unexpected disaster rears its head at the last minute, but you may see the Astroguards sally forth in just a few weeks.

Looking good.

Any chance of head variants for the astronauts, since there are so few in this scale, and some of us may not one skeletonized ones?

Capes as optional add-ons would be nice too, for those that want, or don't want them.

I'd like to get both of those ideas in. The astronaut is more likely, but it all really depends on how much funding we can gather during the campaign.

IMO the Schlock troopers look a lot better with the capes.

Is this Kickstarter going to be for both friend and foe minis?

If you sculpt your own minis, what's the funding for? Also, how much do you need to raise?

If you were unfortunate enough to miss the source of that reference, I suggest starting at the beginning of the archive and working forward:  https://www.schlockmercenary.com/

Is this Kickstarter going to be for both friend and foe minis?

There will be an assortment of additional heroes and villains available as stretch goals. I'm eager to flesh out the line with a wide variety of aliens, robots, soldiers and creatures, but I want to make sure backers get these initial figures in hand on time before expanding the range.

If you sculpt your own minis, what's the funding for? Also, how much do you need to raise?

These are digital sculpts. The masters for the initial Astroguards are complete, but production molds need to be created. The additional heroes and villains still need resin casts created from the files, master molds and production molds made. While I've already invested quite a bit into this project, I could really use the support in getting this line off the ground.

I'm going to make the Kickstarter preview page available to my email subscribers within the next few weeks for feedback, so please sign up (https://www.starschlock.com/) if you'd like to check it out!

Yes, you should be able to get the power bots without the rest of the Astroguard squad in the future. I have a number of 'bots planned I'm hoping to release.

The Star Schlock Kickstarter has smashed its funding goals and is crushing through stretch goals bringing new aliens, robots and beings to the table. We recently unlocked all of the Denizens of the Galaxy and a Colonial Conscript squad.

Plus, we've got new free minis added to each pledge, new robots starting to appear and a wide array of more soldiers, aliens and heroes that will be revealed soon. Check it out! Star Schlock Astroguards (and more!) Kickstarter (http://kck.st/3gZGRxk)

I'm in on this, but before deciding on the whole Galactic citizens, or buying a la carte, is there a better image of the figure on the far left? He just looks headless?

Whoops! That was a problem with my photoshopping! You can see a fixed version above. The figure on the very left is an Astroguard, the same sculpt used for the carded version. The Galactic Denizens add-on just allows you to pick it up unpainted. Thanks for the support!

Never fear, late pledges will be available in the pledge manager. Our Star Schlock miniatures are approved and we are moving into production. Want to get in on late pledge pricing, free figures, plus more surprises? There's still a chance to get your late pledges in (https://gamefound.com/projects/wunkay/star-schlock-astroguards-miniatures#/section/pledge-astroguard-late-pledges-2646), but that window is closing rapidly. I'm so excited to finally be bringing these figures to your tabletop!

Also, this has nothing to do with a sci-fi "Mercenary" comic. Sorry for getting your hopes up!

404 Page Does Not Exist on that last link.  Was this what you were trying to link?

https://gamefound.com/projects/wunkay/star-schlock-astroguards-miniatures#/section/pledge-astroguard-late-pledges-2646

Those porter bots would be perfect for Stargrave players looking for Mules out of the Q37 supplement.

Schlock Mercenary was one of the best scifi webcomics ever, and almost impossibly good about updating on schedule year after year after year.  Still got a hole in my reading list now that it's ended.
