Title: Sgt T's Star Wars project Part 19: Mandalorians
Post by: Sgt_T on 28 August 2021, 06:28:25 PM
So I've finally taken the plunge and bought a bunch of Star Wars miniatures. My idea is to collect a platoon sized Stormtrooper force with some support and use mostly non-Star Wars sci-fi miniatures from my collection for a Rebel Alliance platoon.
For gaming smaller encounters some Star Wars character miniatures would be nice.

I got the Imperial Assault core set and am quite pleased with how they scale next to my other miniatures:

I've ordered some Legion Stormtroopers and read in several threads on LAF that they are larger, also because they are on a large cone shaped base. My intention is to mount them on thinner bases so they will at least don't look too out of place next to the Imperial Assault ones.

Title: Re: Sgt T's Star Wars project Part 2: Vehicles
Post by: Sgt_T on 04 September 2021, 05:46:05 PM
I excavated from my storage the Star Wars vehicles I collected over the years:

And some others that I can use too:

The Tau devilfish conversion was inspired by a similar vehicle on this thread: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=124162.msg1566337#msg1566337 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=124162.msg1566337#msg1566337)

Enough flyers, but only 1 land vehicle. Since Star Wars seems to hate wheels, using my wheeled sci-fi vehicles would look a bit wrong somehow. So I'll have to find or scratchbuild a couple of suitable land speeders. Being quite late to the Star Wars bandwagon, affordable ones are hard to find. I haven't stocked up on suitably shaped deodorant bottles or TV remotes which I've seen expertly converted into landspeeders by members of this forum, either. :(

I guess I will have to keep a lookout for objects likely to be converted into landspeeders or bargains.

FFG do a Landspeeder, although it's not cheap - link (https://www.waylandgames.co.uk/star-wars-legion/61790-x-34-landspeeder-unit-expansion). They also do a "truck" and the tank from Rogue One, which are even more expensive.

Revell used to do Clone Walker tanks along with the droid tank you have. I'm not sure if they're still in production, but ebay may have them. They also did the Clone Wars dropship. It's closer to 1/72, but should be okay on the tabletop.

The few Legion troopers I have are Primaris sized. I'm not sure they'll work with anything else, even with smaller bases, but it's worth a try. I have most of the Imperial Assault figures, but decided Legion just didn't work. Hopefully you'll have better luck :D

If you're meaning the LAAT series dropships, a better though older option is to look for the old Star Wars/Transformers crossover version. It closes up quite well and locks with a bit of glue added. Back during the WotC era a LOT of people were using them for terrain and had worked out stats for them if you wanted to use them in the minis game (The semi-endorced wargame rules that were on their old message boards had them). The toy was slightly on the large side, but I had three of them that I used in an RPG scenario that involved the battle of Coruscant that I ran at a local convention one year.

Yes, I have seen the FFG stuff and it is indeed not cheap. I'd like to put some (civilian) vehicles on the table as part of the terrain. Built some Tau terrain a while back and collected broken computer mice for use as cars. I think I'll give that a try. They are not open topped, but not everyone wants to drive their speeder without cover under a blistering sun or in the pouring rain. :D
The rebels will need one or more "technicals". I'll have to see how to get these.

I remember assembling the 1/72 Revell LAAT. I must have tucked it away in a box somewhere. Need to do some more digging. :)

Thanks for the tip! I wasn't aware of these. Looked them up but those don't come cheap either. Will look out for them though.

I didn't realise there was a transformer one. You mentioning transformers, however, has reminded me that I have Clone Wars Walker and Droid tanks that are also transformers. They're probably as difficult to find as the LAAT, but they were produced.

If 3d printing is available to you, you should find more than enough vehicles to populate your board. :D

The LAAT one kind of caught on a lot more than others in it. And Hasbro/WotC actually marketed it on their boards as in scale with the minis at the time because it was when one of the prequel era releases were coming. One of the mods even had a conversion guide for it to make the LAAT/i into a LAAT/c that included adding magnets and such to both it and some of the actual tank minis that you could carry them around.

You could even put the clones into the bay of the LAAT/i if you wanted to
Title: Re: Sgt T's Star Wars project Part 3: Stormtroopers
Post by: Sgt_T on 11 September 2021, 11:37:11 AM
The Star Wars Legion stormtroopers and scout troopers I ordered have arrived. I'm impressed with the quality of the miniatures: excellent overall. Certainly better than the Imperial Assault models. I've lined them up to see how they fit in, when mounted on different bases.

For me mixing the stormtroopers in a unit works when the Legion ones are mounted on (in this case a Warlord games) thin base. Although the movies suggest a minimum stormtrooper height, armies have been known to relax their recruitment criteria to fill the ranks.

I'm less pleased with the scout trooper match. I think it is because of the quite small and differently shaped helmet on the Imperial Assault one. Maybe giving the Imperial Assault scout trooper a Legion scout trooper helmet will work, or a bare head.

For the Rebels I'm thinking of ordering a set of Star Wars alien heads to put on spare figures to increase their Star Wars look.

Does anyone have experience with these?

Is smooth fine detail OK or should I really go for smoothest fine detail?

Title: Re: Sgt T's Star Wars project Part 4: Jawa's
Post by: Sgt_T on 18 September 2021, 02:35:22 PM
I liked the Jawa's in the Mandalorian and the original films. A small band of them for use in games would be great, but there are no Legion Jawa's (yet) and there is only one for Imperial Assault. So to get more Utinni for my Euro I went looking for proxies and came across some second hand plastic GW night goblins.

Although they are a bit stunted for Jawa's they look acceptable to me and I can field 15 of them for the price of 1 Imperial Assault Jawa!

I cut away the Goblins face (luckily the face of a Jawa is hidden by his clothes so no need to sculpt a tiny face. I intend to paint the goblin's jaw as a scarf hiding even more of the Jawa's face), cut away the shield, trimmed down the hood, removed the hands and replaced them with smaller ones from my bits box. A few spare weapons, US, British and German WW2 pouches and presto: Inside every night goblin there's a Jawa trying to get out.

If you're looking to bulk them out in numbers, I'm pretty sure that there are a few Jawa from the WotC plastics that were oversized there

I've been looking for WotC plastics, but they are not that easy to get over here (EU). I've found a few but no Jawa's.

I'm in the Netherlands so can expect to pay a hefty post-brexit surcharge which I'm not very keen on.

All Revell kits, but although the scale on the box of the X-Wing and Vader's TIE fighter was supposed to be the same, the pilots were obviously not:

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhWz5w6RsyXJ-tjPN6MtiOrRy31Sw1R-wz9xfj6d5IOed6jpHypHNDkXJBB0gtu16--LxABiKT3483oDGowp4wZVILIdwwzhpKJTWsTLvImHCCtdtpDBk4QumbRPiE_ikdMQ0kJGcI3ole26-cYuMgqmdRRRYAnP-ZPUXpdpRB8w9Yw8OBiNh4MMoUXqg=w400-h181)

I intend to use them as Rebel infantry, unaligned natives or gang members, or even mercenaries hired by the Empire.

I know my painting skills are no match for yours or the likes of Michi or Agis, but for me painting figures is a relaxing way to spend an evening and take my mind off work. For the most part I'm happy with the results.

Anyway, some more rebels and a few characters:

I'm still plodding along on this project. Finally finished my Stormtroopers and other Imperials, although the Scout speeder bikes are still in the painting queue.

Thanks Grumpy & Golgotha.

Positive feedback and regularly posting on the blog and on the Leadadventure forum has helped keeping me focused on finishing things (instead of halfway starting a new unfinished project).

I still have a few spaceships and a few miniatures to paint, but the end of the Star Wars painting queue is in sight.

Everything (painted that is) together on the table:

Just caught up with the blog progress pictures and congratulations on closing in on the end!  Nothing really compares to seeing everything laid out on the table at once.

(instead of halfway starting a new unfinished project)
But then again, if it wasn't for half unfinished projects some of us (me) wouldn't have any projects at all. :-I

Also, using Deadzone Rebs as SW Rebels is a stroke of genius. They really look the part. I have those figures and while I like them, I never really had a reason to paint them up.  Now I do!

I've painted the last of the miniatures in the queue (Cad Bane, an albino Nexu and 2 alien dignitaries) and 2 more ships: the Hasbro U-wing and a Thunderbird 2 toy as a generic freighter.

Thanks for all the kind words.
Although dormant for a while I've restarted my Star Wars project with a number of new figures in the painting queue and two new ships:

The Zurg mothership, repurposed as a Zurgian rebel Alliance ship, Moff Zurg's Imperial ship or a Scoundrel ship of some kind.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibRkbfYS1V2ABCJlA3REeIlh2TU9fxXZ1a7fAOS_1p-iKAO2fZMOoqx-JmuebgQzyb2R-8kl2VqAA2FtM1f1wDU7IgerKUSCYoin0dU-Kc3rLIwOHEJaGirevE2psBT-5jlE-ILgkZMb4A5qOVZiR08_CsfmeB-W8_H5LuLL-D0Ao5qe7Iq575ws64sZoc/s2074/IMG_6965.JPG)

The other one is the Paw Patrol ship, repurposed as an unmarked dropship/freighter to be used by any faction.

I really like both of those repurposed ships, I’d stared at the Buzz Lightyear ones in a toy shop thinking they might be perfect and you’ve convinced me! Not sure how I’d fit it on the table as I seem to have more scenery and set dressing bits (ships etc) than miniatures currently (usually the other way around).

I already commented on the Zurg ship: it's great, but that Paw Patrol ship is something else. It's huge and very spacious inside. Love what you did with it too; a very effective conversion with so many uses...  8)

Coming soon to a forest moon near you!

Came across some very reasonably priced Wargames Atlantic Raumjäger sprues and turned them into rebel commandos.

You've moved on, obviously, but can you share how you did the camo on the rebels? Sponging?

Thx for the kind words people

You've moved on, obviously, but can you share how you did the camo on the rebels? Sponging?

I think it's called "stippling". You take a worn out brush and wipe off much of the paint, then repeatedly tap the brush on the part of miniature where you want it to go.

I used the following paints:
Uniform base coat: Soviet Body Armour (green); Warlord paint (the Army Painter)
Camo 1: Vallejo Stone Grey
Camo 2: Vallejo German Dark Green

Webbing: Vallejo Brown Violet
Canteen: GW Castellan Green
Helmet: Piat Green; Warlord Paint (the Army Painter) & Vallejo Flat Brown
Armour base coat: Vallejo Flat Brown
layer: Zeltbahn Camo Brown; Warlord paint (the Army Painter)

Gaiters: Vallejo Olive Green
Hard gear (e.g. binoculars, radios): Vallejo Gunship Green

The royal guard figures are from the Imperial Assault board game:

The final batch (I think....) of Star Wars miniatures has exited the painting queue (one base still to be done).

Mandalorians!

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLIEEYl4gr8MtQcHQq3W5MXbJoN6E6VtNkSgllaZM-jrSa5TWe4FWDquIoBLPYvsGrXCTQvS4hEJBn3P4EZW4a6N24XHRgjbItBh1e8VjPFvMS5GtjC-K5Zo21SXhF7HB59OFLDJVM13D63b6G19nx4xFvDICs74800fkX2Frf-W-fiBi7iE9Pd6SSHhyphenhyphenl/s1977/IMG_7484.JPG)

Yes, there is a noticable scale difference between Din Djarin and Boba (painted as some other Mandalorian) and the other Mandalorians. Din Djarin and Boba are Star Wars Legion models, the other ones are from Anvil Industry.
I've tried to obscure this a bit by using different height bases.

Also Yoda and two Grogu versions.
