Title: Empress Indian Mutiny - this year’s project
Post by: Sparrow on 01 January 2022, 06:56:38 PM
I’ve been slowly building up Indian Mutiny forces “on the side”. as I’ve worked on other periods but this year I’ve decided to make it my “main thing”. I’ve been painting up a few units and have used the incredible talents of Gary Shirley to add a lot more. To help plan, a get my mojo going, I put out in a tabletop what I already have … it’s very clear I need to get a lot more Mutineers painted!

Lovely work on such beautiful miniatures.  :-*

The depth of detail in the Iron Duke range is sub;lime; it has to be one of the best researched ranges of miniatures currently available.

Cheers all.. a lot of credit must go to Gary Shirley who has (and will be!) painting a lot of the figures here! I’m restricting myself to the simpler mutineers, baggage, oxen, terrain etc given my own painting skills!

Re Aetheling’s comments - fully agreed! The quality of Mike Snook’s research (and Paul Hicks’ sculpting) really shows. Although I am a tad biased (Paul at Empress is my regular wargames  opponent and, for complete “disclosure” I sponsored the ECW range although I have no commercial interest) one of the great joys I get from using any Empress range is the quality of research, design and casting. It really is a golden age for figure ranges isn’t it?

Sweet! Love those skirmishing Highlanders. Have always liked that one-off look they sported during the Mutiny. Some very interesting uniform variations in this conflict that you just don't see anywhere else.  :)

Indeed. We talk sometimes about the "greying of the hobby" but on the other hand we have never had it so good. almost everything we can think of is available somewhere in some scale- yeah, there are a few gaps but they are growing smaller every day.  8)

What a wonderful collection!
Agree that the Indian Mutiny is one of the most fascinating Colonial eras ever.
The sheer variety of uniforms makes it almost endless.

Cheers, everyone, for the compliments. Hugely appreciated. Gary’s work shines over my own, if I’m honest,  but it is giving me the mojo to keep improving my own output! Let me confess, I started the period knowing little about it but loving the appearance and miniatures. The more I read into it, the more fascinating it gets.

Gary is currently working on some cavalry for me but setting out what I had on the tabletop has really highlighted that my own focus now needs to be on getting a lot more mutineer infantry and some ox draw artillery completed.

Will post up a few updates as and when units are completed but don’t hold your breath as I’m back to the day job now after the festive break…..

Lovely stuff! Timely too - I've been reviewing what I have with the (perhaps vague) intention of doing something meaningful for the IM this year.
This is just the right inspiration.
Really good to see them all multi-based too where a lot of folk seem to settle on single basing for the mutiny. Perhaps the vivid individual accounts pull people's focus down to the single-figure level bit there's a lot of bigger stuff to explore as well.
Which rules are you using and what's your basing convention for this period?

Currently trying various rule sets to find something I like - may well end up writing my own. I’ve even been reading the old Newbury colonial rules!

Basing convention - units of 32 based in 4’s (centre is a double element to accommodate the Colours). Bases are 40mm wide, 50mm deep. Horse will be on 25mm wide x 50mm deep, individually mounted. Artillery etc - whatever looks right.

It is not just the wonderful:-
castings, painting, flags etc. but the way you have grouped
the figures on their bases. each seems to tell its own
little story.

Cheers alll, much appreciated! It’s important I keep re-stressing that the nicer paint jobs are down to the skills of Gary Shirley. I’m just painting the easy stuff!

Re the basing (the only but that is all me!)  I’m lucky with Paul Hicks’  sculpting, it just lends itself to the pseudo dioramas that just seem so right (in my opinion) for this campaign.

The individually mounted skirmish lines might also be better grouped on to larger bases for appearance/ease of play (say 2 or 3 to a base?) but I’ve kept them as individuals so I can play Sharp Practice with them plus use them more easily in siege games etc.

Whether you or Gary Shirley did the work, the woman in the second of your posts on the first page of this thread is truly stunning work - I see women wearing garments like that around here fairly often (we have a sizable Sikh community in this region of California).  Rani of Jhansi perhaps?

I, too, like the multiple basing.  I will be using three abreast for my British and 3 in an 'irregular' square base for the mutineers (mostly, might let a few be better organized/better quality).  My long stalled IM project has been reinvigorated by the recent OG25/Bluemoon release in 15/18 mm.  Already bought the figures, just need to get to painting them - eventually!
