Title: The T + T Colonial Supplement NOW AVAILABLE
Post by: Driscoles on 18 October 2009, 12:55:46 PM
Hi All,

actually I wanted the colonial supplement completed at the end of October. I don`t think I am gonna make it in two weeks time.

The good news is that I am nearly finished. The fluff or historical text is eaten up most of my time which is scarce since we have a new family member called Archie. A dog ! I hoped he would inspire me when writing the Afghan War Chapter. In memory of Bobbie - you probably all know - the famous mongrel who survived the battle of Maiwand. In some ways Archie inspired me. "Lets go out for a walk - human"  his eyes usually say.

Back to the supplement. I am still looking for a name. It sure has a working title but that won´t fit for a supplements title.

The supplement will have a number of chapters. You will get new rules like formations, volley fire, horses and camels and most important the baggage or pack  train rules. I believe they will inspire your games  :)

Chapter two contains some colonial fluff  and takes a closer look on the conflicts the lists will cover. Although I must admit that you will be able to play almost any colonial conflict with the rules.

Chapter three contains a list of special rules for skills some of Britain`s opponents were famous for. These rules will also enable you to create your own lists using the skill list.

Chapter four will bring you the army lists. The basic unit size will change a bit. You can have up to 12 models in an English unit and up to 20 models in a native unit.
The list contains the British, most British allies, famous foe`s  and some new weapons.

The optional rules are saved for chapter five. There you will find rules for range markers, extended coherency, bayonet charges etc.

The final chapter will contain some rules clarification.

I hope there will be some space left so I  can fill the final pages with a new scenario.

I received  help from some LAF guys who are contributing with some excellent miniature pictures and playtesting.

The supplement will also contain some beautiful historical pictures provided by Ian Knight. His books are a useful source for any colonial wargamer. Thanks to Empress Miniatures for establishing the contact.

Until the release date I will inform you about any news on the supplement. So please feel free and have a look inside this thread when you come along the
LA Forum.

Cheers
Björn

I just wanted to add that I have bought the basic T&T rulebook (it arrived today) and, on reading it through, it looks like it will be great fun to play!!!
As I am currently painting NW Frontier Brits, Indians and Pathans, the Colonial supplement will be a must-buy, as it is the period I mainly want to use the rules for at my wargames club. Am therefore eagerly awaiting any updates on progress (hint...hint... ;) )

I´m currently doing some Editorial Work on the Army Lists, and I can say I´m really impressed. Björn did a great job in translating the armies´ character into T&T terms, and I´m more than tempted to get some proper Redcoats now...

Well, we´re aiming for an English title to help with overseas sales ;), but assuming you mean like in "Colonial Turmoil"? I´d say that would be properly translated as "Kolonialgetümmel" or "Kolonialwirren", and, while fun, doesn´t quite seem to fit what we were looking for (Björn´s feedback pending and notwithstanding).

Additionally, since all the Colonial stuff is a bit touchy over here (pretty much like all that pre-1945 stuff), we´d best like to avoid a name that might be interpreted as inappropriately trivializing.

Hmm, I guess "Europa uber alles" wouldn't work either then...

I was thinking about a supplement title "Colonial Scramble," to borrow a word from the book title, "The Scamble for Africa."  Many other good titles have already been used for previous colonial games (The Sword and the Flame, Battles for Empire, Pax Britannica, etc.).

Thanks for your suggestions mate.
Well...I think I will make the Title very simple.
But my ears are open to any good idea that does not sound like " Colonial : Redemption of the Virgian Redcoats " or such . ;)
Thank you.

How about something short in the exisiting trend of short and catchy ('Triumph and Tragedy', 'No Pasaran')?

The slogan 'Cape to Cario' was minted by the the #1 British colonialist Cecil Rhodes, who envisioned painting the map of African red (British, not blood, in this context) from the Cape of Good Hope in the south to Cairo in the north, thus the slogan from “Cape to Cairo.” Colonialism obviously happened in a lot of places besides Africa, but I think it doesn't need a lot of background story to see how the slogan captures the push 'n shove to colour in the world map in your 'colour, weather they be Russian, American, German, Italian, French, British, Belgian, Spanish or what have you. Plus it is not immediately offensive.

Rhodes himself:

Google the slogan and you'll find quite a few interesting articles. (The image is taken from Wikipedia so it is quite possible it is within the public domain, if you want to use it.)

As for that setting, I´d think you can use the basic rules for that one (since it is rather Interwar), and adapt some of the new rules we´ll include in the Colonial supplement to represent the Ethiopians. Rules for the CV3-33 can be found in the Spanish Civil War Book.

Post by: Driscoles on 20 February 2010, 05:04:02 PM
Good evening,

we are still working on the layout and on the cover. The cover will be different to the previous covers.

Something else will be different as well. The Colonial Supplement will be printed in color. The layout so far looks great and it would be a shame to print it in black and white.

The contents is spread over five chapters. At a total of about 60 pages.

The first chapter is about New Rules like volley fire and formation rules, transport units, limber, rockets ( yes - with minimum range ) and other weapons. We also included the trumpets and flag rules from the LoM Supplement.

Chapter too is some fluff about the colonial age because I believe that wargaming also has an educational mission  ;)

Chapter Three gives an overview about tribal traits and other native special rules. I wrote rules for tactical traits like bad shots, advanced deployment, throwing spears and charges and psychological traits like fanatics, fatalists, bravery and others. These rules make it possible to design your own native troops that are not covered by the supplement. Theese special rules can also be used for adventurous Darkest Africa games.

Chapter four is all about army lists. The rules have a closer look at the British Army but can easily adopted to all other European trained armies of the colonial age. The supplement also covers lists for the Egyptian and Indian Army.

There are lists for The Zulus ( and others ) !

Chapter five is about optional rules. They can be used for special scenarios, larger battles or campaign games. They can change the game balancing a bit. Rules included are bayonet charges, extended coherency, guard units, densely packed troops, the famous square and others.

We still hope to get the supplement ready at the end of February but - and this is the bad news - it could be delayed until mid March.

Cheers
Björn

Hi,

the work is done. The Triumph & Tragedy Colonial supplement will be in print this week and available around the 20th of May.

Here is a little preview of the title page and the rear side of the supplement.

The book is in complete color with lots of pictures of miniatures, terrain and historical stuff ( thanks to Ian Knight ). You will get new rules, optional rules, skills and traits, historical information and a few army lists.

Cheers

Love that picture.

Thank you guys for the comments.

I haven t calculated the price yet. The price will be only a bit higher than the previous books. Thats because this one has a little bit more pages and is in full color.

Plynkes. You are a language genius and so you are right !
The name came into my mind a few years ago when we played Mordheim every Thursday for 2 years. That was a very funny time ( And maybe we were a bit like hooligans  ;)  )  So I used this name for the Do or Dice convention website and now for the T+T rulesbooks.

Today I attach a sample page and the table of contents for the supplement. The sample page was from the beta version and is not perfect but it gives you an idea about the look !

As of today Battlefield Berlin has the supplement in stock. They still need to update their web shop, though.

I picked up my copy this morning.  :)

T&T is a very nice ruleset for skirmish games, consisting of:
Basic ruleset  (2nd ed. by now I recall)
SCW expansion, containing rules for a lot of vehicles

and the newly released and breathlessly avaited
Colonial expansion, see above

for 28mm since skirmish (guess 6mm skirmish would be possible too with a magnifiying glass, would like to see the characters  ;))

I would guess the creators can elaborate  ;)

Thanks former user.

The Colonial Supplement is now suitable for larger games as well.
I increased the unit size especially for the native units.

I still have to fulfill the debt of giving a T&T game analysis on our "Riga 1919" game, where I shamelessly bent the rules and increased the unit sizes (among other things)

and it worked very well

vehicle rules are still a bit of a problem, but this is hardly an issue in colonial terms.

Me to! Well done to Jens and the Bundespost  ;D

Just ben reading through it and I'm very impressed. All of the rules look to be spot-on and this supplement should turn a great game system into a superb one!

No colonial gamer should be without T&T and this supplement.

Has anyone tried these rules with FFL and did they work well?
Title: Re: The T + T Colonial Supplement NOW AVAILABLE

Hi !
Sure you can play FFL with these rules. Don`t know why they shouldn t work well.
We did some games with the FFL. The rules contain skills and traits for the natives.
For more questions please ask.
Cheers
