At the moment, our small CoC group from the Ingolstadt-Munich area has mainly focussed on the ‘Operation Husky’ / Sicily setting, with the option of extending this to southern Italy.
While my two comrades-in-arms have built up and expanded the Axis forces, I had decided on the US Boys; I had already painted a platoon of US Parachute Infantry, which I had then expanded further and have now added US Armoured.
This allows us to easily depict the battles at Gela, for example.

Beautiful work on those! Sicily and southern Italy are campaigns I find quite interesting. It looks like you’re well equipped to play some games!
-
Absolutely wonderful. Congratulations on gaming a much neglected theatre of WW2.
-
Thank you very much, we like to play outside the usual settings :)
Just a few additions here and there from now on to add some more support for my US Boys from time to time - my next project will be the Fallschirm-Panzerdivision HG.

Some more support for my US Boys finished.

For Chain of Command Support Option I needed an additional Junior Leader for my Armored Infantry and so I quickly painted one; 15mm miniature from Battlefront.

Oj, just stop! I've been trying hard to resist doing WWII in 15 mm. (my chosen scale of choice) and you are NOT helping!!
Very nice work - far beyond what I'd do I'm sure. But still damaging my resolve (well, a little, resolve is pretty strong). Oh, temptation.
-
Thank you :)
Listen to your inner voice, resistance is futile :D lol
-
Excellent painting. Just yesterday I was telling another poster on the Napoleonic board that until then I had never before seen 15mm figures singly based. And now this.
I look forward to seeing the collection expand.
-
I have restructured (and rebased some of them) my 15mm US Parachute Infantry a bit among other things and so all my Junior Leaders are based separately now.
In the course of this I painted a few reinforcements and can use them now to field a 3rd squad.
All miniatures are from Battlefront.

After completing the markers for Minefields the next ones we needed for our games were some sections of Barbed Wire.
Measuring 6" x 2" using cocktail sticks cut to length for the posts and Security Wire to represent the barbed wire.
In addition to normal sections, I also built 3 destroyed sections of these barbed wire entanglements, which were either destroyed by artillery/mortar fire, tanks driving through them, or by pioneers with wire cutters.

Lovely work here, it’s hard to believe these are 15mm, you could easily pass them off as a bigger scale. Look forward to seeing more.

Thank you very much for this compliment :)

As I made my previous gaming mat more for fertile regions like Central Europe/North America and we now play most of the time games settled in Tunisia, Sicily and so on it was time to build a new mat representing these more arid regions.
The new mat is measuring 2.50 x 1.60 metres, so I should be prepared for all eventualities.
For more details how I built this mat and much more pictures including from the tip stage please have a look on my Blog at:

Excellent work Utgaard. I also play 15mm individually based CoC (and Battlegroup) and your models are inspiring. I’m going to use your m3/5 variants as a guide for mine (and I’m off to investigate your blog). Thanks

Now that my terrain mat is finished, the first wheat fields made of fake fur will follow; advantage: they adapt flexibly even to irregular terrain like hills and such.
Pictures with 28mm and 15mm figures for size comparison.

The seemingly typical golden yellow wheat fields - hardly to be seen in nature. 28mm and 15mm figures for size comparison:

I love those fields - I have a bolt of TBF (teddy bear fur) in a perfect colour for exactly this purpose I just haven’t been brave enough to cut it up. I’m stuck on sizes for the fields and was worried as to whether the edges will need any kind of finishing - did you do anything in particular to the edges of the material to stop fraying (like overlocking or applying PVA glue maybe?). Thank you again for the inspiration (I may need to move close to you!).

Thank you very much to all of you! :)
<snip>I’m stuck on sizes for the fields and was worried as to whether the edges will need any kind of finishing - did you do anything in particular to the edges of the material to stop fraying
I did different sizes so I´m flexible how to lay out them on my mat.
Fraying is not a problem at all - at least all the fake fur I know/use is woven into a very dense kind of fabric that doesn't have this problem so no, I didn't do anything to the edges.

Thank you Utgard that helps my lack of confidence. I does look very dense (and my textile savvy wife has repeatedly assured me it should be fine) but my OCD and knowledge of how costly it would be to replace (mohair I bought on massive discount) have made me incredibly hesitant lol
What’s next on your to-do list? If there’s anything from original Warmaster (noticed on your blog) that you would be interested in give me a shout as I have a reasonable hoard and may be able to help.

You're welcome ;)
Regarding Warmaster:
No thank you - I will paint up some more Demon Hordes to add variety to my Demon Force but all units I need for this are printed already 8)

After my different pieces of wheat fields were finished it was time to add more variety to my battlefields, so grassland comes next.
Starting materials were again fake fur, acrylic paste and lots of colours (both normal acrylic paints and spray cans), combs, brushes, clippers, scissors - and again much time of course.

Unpaved roads were next on my to-do list and of course, these should also be flexible so that they can adapt to hilly terrain.
Some details how I made them and more pictures can be found on my Blog at:

Should be enough for the time being 8)

I love this idea! I bought some of the much talked about Fat Franks roads (a well known U.K. seller) and (whilst he was great and reasonably priced) the roads all cracked and fell apart very rapidly. I remade them but they’re still not really flexible enough. This is an excellent idea and I’m now going to redo them using your much better method. Thank you

Thank you guys for these compliments :)

Really cool
Is there a particular fur you recommend for both the fields and roads
I've been trying to work out a way of making something like this for a while and your fur idea seem like an ideal base

If I've learnt one thing wargaming it's that you never have enough roads!
Look great.

Use one with not too long hairs, even for 28mm miniatures a floor hight of 3cm is more than enough, even to represent a wheat field and the hairs of the fur should be easy to brush, as this is crucial for combing the color well into the fur.

The next terrain pieces were right at the top of my to-do list for terrain, simply because they are so typical of Italy, Sicily and the Levante: Vineyards.
However, it took a few (failed) attempts before I achieved an acceptable result that fulfilled the criteria - should look like a vineyard; should not be a firmly modelled hill; must therefore be flexible.
I'm quite happy with that for now, although I already have 2 ideas for improvements for the next version - let's see if they work as intended

They look good but not quite right for a vineyard. For the 15 mm guys they certainly look more like orange or lemon groves due to the scale. I wonder if you can get the growth going along the wires a bit more rather than so round? The traditional vineyard is sort of longer and thinner and less bush like.
-
They do sit well on the hills, what did you use as the base?
I’m with Jon that they do look a bit bush like for vineyards.
-
Yes, of course I know what a vineyard normally looks like, the large gaps between the vines themselves are the compromise I had to make to achieve the desired flexibility.
For the base I used just some fleece.
-
The gaps don’t detract from the look to be honest - it’s the clumped foliage that stops it reading as a vineyard and makes it look like an orchard. The foliage needs to be thinner and in a continuous line.
-
Yeah another point that will change with the next version.
Didn´t use clump foliage but poly fibre - the problem are the trunks, will have to made them a bit different so they don´t look like little trees.
-
This is great!

What’s the thickness of a typical grape vine? Even at 28 mm they will he pretty thin, feels like geavy duty wire would be thick enough?

Thank you :)

Yeah the next trunks will be built from wire and the branches just stretched to the sides so they should be much thinner.

As I wanted some thematically appropriate Jump Off Points (Chain of Command) / Objective Markers (Battlegroup) for my US Boys, I used some leftover miniatures from my AD- and Airborne projects and some drop containers and parachutes (self-printed ones) to build 4 of them. Scale 15mm again.

Never heard of this to be honest, but at least for the US the star symbol on my jeep is in the correct direction as I have never seen a picture with it other side around ;)

As a little warm-up exercise, I'm starting the new year with adding one more piece of terrain to my existing 15mm collection - a small church/chapel for our Sicilian setting, but it could be used nearly all around the Mediterranean.
It´s a 3D print again with the STL from Jens Najewitz (3dprintterrain) where I ‘plastered’ the walls after printing and the roof tiles are individually painted to achieve the typical Mediterranean look.

As some of you might know, for the most part our CoC games have "Operation Husky" and the fighting for Sicily 1943 as the setting.
As such, I've been doing a lot of research over the last few weeks to create the most accurate army list possible (at least for me) for Chain of Command:
The 4ª Divisione d'Assalto ‘Livorno’, which fought with so much determination and valour in the defence of Sicily in 1943.
And to paint a platoon and the needed support of this division will be my first main project for 2025.
Perhaps our Italian members in particular have further information or tips that could be added to the list?
For the background, used sources and the the resulting list that resulted from the research please have a look on my Blog at:
https://utgaards-blog.blogspot.com/2025/01/project-livorno-chain-of-command-army.html (https://utgaards-blog.blogspot.com/2025/01/project-livorno-chain-of-command-army.html)

My main project for the first part of 2025 - the 4ª Divisione d'Assalto ‘Livorno’ in 15mm for our setting of Sicily 1943.
I´m starting with an Anti-Tank gun, a Cannone da 47/32, also called ‘Elefantino’ - a much needed support against all these Shermans of the US Boys.
Model and crew are 3D printed, STLs are from different sources.

The next support option for my project the Italian "Livorno" division in 15mm is ready to fend off enemy armor, a "Fucile controcarro Solothurn da 20 mm" (Solothurn S-18/1000 Anti Tank rifle).
Just a lightweight one, but nonetheless better than nothing ;-)
3D printed with the STLs coming from 3D Breed.

After my list for the different structured platoons of the "Livorno", "Superga" and later "Friuli") was ready it's now time for an army list for the remaining Metropolitan (in Italy itself, or stationed in Albania, Greece and so on) divisions.
This includes the fanteria costiera (Coastal Divisions) and camicie nere (Blackshirt).
For the army list itself and the used sources please have a look at my Blog:

With the inferior senior leaders you have no use for command dice of 3? I presume this is intentional but seems pretty harsh!
-
There is a JL integrated into the gruppo fucilieri who can of course use the command dice that rolled a 3.
But if this sounds too harsh, you can replace the Inferior Senior Leader with an Superior JL - this will not change the Force Rating of the platoon.
-
Ahh I missed that, sorry. So it goes from too little leadership to arguably too much!
Have you tried with the section leader as just a standard Junior Leader (like in the Spanish Civil War lists) and no separate junior leader for just that one team? The way it is structured at the minute it sort of breaks the usual make up of Senior/Junior leader with platoon/section responsibility.
It works well with the Spanish civil war (where many platoons have the 2 section 3 team make up) in that it creates headaches for trying to command three teams with 2CI.
It would drop the force rating down to -3 I think?
-
I know the versions for the SCW of course but the Italians had their fair amount of changes since then even if they sticked mostly with the binary structure for their platoons.
It´s a matter of how you would translate this structure into the CoC world.
The gruppo fuciliere was commanded by a caporale maggiore (roughly translated to a Lance Corporal) while the sergente maggiore (this would be a platoon sergeant in other armies) commanded the squad itself but would mainly direct the fire of the 2 LMG teams.
Personally I don´t think this is too much leadership as Inferior SL is just 2 CI activated on a 4 even though there is an additional JL for the Rifle group as he can command only his riflemen.
And don´t forget for the whole platoon as such you will have 5 leader with a total of 11 CI - the same amount of leaders like a British platoon would have, but it would have a total of 12 CI (2 SL with 3 CI each and 3 JL with 2 CI each).
-
Not every NCO is represented in CoC, eg a British section has a corporal and a lance corporal but only one is represented in CoC. I personally would stick with a single junior leader for the section as it conforms to the normal CoC way of doing things and represents one of the weaknesses of this type of platoon organisation. After all there is a reason this was dropped by everybody else. Giving it too many men and too few leaders represents better the essence of the platoon. It also stops any rules ambiguity around having a senior leader in charge of a section with another junior leader within the section but not able to command the entire section.
Alternatively split it into four effective sections, so two rifle sections of a single team and JL and two MG sections of two teams each and a JL. If it effectively operated as a square platoon then do it as such.
-
That would of course be a valid possibility, but Rich himself had a list on the Lardie website with the same structure as ours, only instead of the Inferior SL, the official list for NA 1941 had a Superior JL commanding a squad that contained another JL for the Rifle Team - almost like our list.
And of course not all NCOs are represented as leaders in our list either; there are 3 other caporali in each squad.
The manual ‘LE SQUADRE DELLA FANTERIA’ from 1943 also clearly states that the serg. magg. as commander of the squad directs the gruppo mitragliatori, while the caporale magg. as vice-commander assumes this task for the gruppo fucilieri.
We thought it would be more appropriate to represent the sergente maggiore as what he is in other nations: a platoon sergeant - in this case as an inferior SL, because there are 2 of them in the platoon and they are more involved in managing one of the squads than in other armies.
We have now played a few games with this list and the Italians remain much more inflexible with this structure than British or US squads.
With a 2 you can only activate the entire huge squad and all teams have to do the same, with a 3 only the 10 rifles can be activated and with a 4 and only 2 CI available the possibilities are also very limited.
Accordingly, we will stick to our interpretation without insisting that it is the only correct one.
One of the nice things about CoC: since it's not suitable for tournaments anyway, different interpretations aren't a problem like in other rules 8)
-
Fair enough. How do you deal with the section splitting? Eg JL takes the rifles off and leaves the mgs behind. Do they act on a 1 now and the rest still on a 2? Eg like you would if you split a scout team.
-
No, if the JL with the Rifle team is outside of 4’ to the LMG team, both teams can only be activated with a 1, or by their respective leader - so at 3 the JL can activate his Rifles and at 4 the SL can activate the LMGs - in this case there is no squad/section anymore, so no activation via the 2.
By the way, I find this relaxed discussion very inspiring, thank you for that! :-*

More 15mm Italians added to my growing collection..
Depending on the mission, the Brixia M35s could be assigned individually to the platoons, but were primarily intended to operate as a squad to concentrate their fire on a single target. Either to prepare an assault or to defend a position.
So I needed not just one model of the Brixia M35 of course but three of them - including 3 fucilieri acting as additional loaders and a sergente to command the squad.
Models are 3D printed ones, STLs made by 3D Breed. As always, I not only re-scaled them to 15mm, but also adjusted the proportions so that they don't look so cartoonish and fit in better with the other 15mm figures from the usual manufacturers.

Since I was asked about it several times after posting the AAR of our Chain of Command Sicily 1943 games: Here is the CoC army list for the US Parachute Infantry for the Mediterranean 1942 to 1943, i.e. ‘Operation Torch’; ‘Operation Husky’ and the landing on the Italian mainland itself.
They belonged to the 82nd Airborne Division and were organised into two squads which would only change with ‘Operation Market Garden’ (from then on, they switched to 3 squads per platoon organisation)
The list itself matches that of the US Parachute Infantry from the rulebook, but the options are adapted to the time period and the mediterranean theatre of operations of course.
The complete list (and always the latest version) can be downloaded from my Blog at:
https://utgaards-blog.blogspot.com/2025/02/us-airborne-coc-army-list-for.html (https://utgaards-blog.blogspot.com/2025/02/us-airborne-coc-army-list-for.html)

Comments, advice and criticism are of course always welcome.

The only comment is around the 60 mm mortar squad. The way it is laid it is a little unclear if each section has one or if there is one per platoon. I would suggest putting it above the squads 1 and 2 and under the headquarters if it is a singular squad (which I believe it was?). In effect the paratroop infantry was a three squad platoon but one of those was a mortar?
If I have that wrong and it is meant to be part of the section then call it a team.
-
Good advice, thank you.
I have adjusted the list and added an additional explanation to the support options.
It´s just a team called "Mortar Squads" in official documents - same goes for the "Mortar Squad" of the US Armored, nothing more but a team but called squad too.

Another of our army lists that I researched for our games in Tunisia 42/43 and Sicily 43, in this case for a platoon of the US Armoured Rifle Infantry.
It can be used for starting with the Landings in Marocco, over to Tunisia and of course Sicily. It ends with the year 1943.
I have based this CoC Army List for a Rifle Platoon of the Armoured Divisions on original sources like the ToE T/O 7-27 and documents like FM 17 - 71 which describe how an Armoured platoon acts in battle.
For more details, to download the list itself and information on the used sources please have a look on my Blog:

The last list, for the time being, for Italians in North Africa, Sicily and Italy from 1942 to the end of 1943 - for motorised Bersaglieri platoons and those mounted on motorbikes.
I must confess that the research on the Bersaglieri was the most exhausting and contradictory so far for our CoC army lists.
So many reorganisations, some of which were only ordered but never implemented, requests for changes from the divisions based on their combat experience, which were usually, but not always, granted, and so on.
Or as my mate Max said so aptly when I held him up-to-date during the research: In principle, one needs to draw up a separate list for each month and each division 😅
The list is available for download on my blog, where you can also find background information on the research:

Over the last few months, Max and me have also been using our CoC games to create our own scenario and improve/adapt it over time.
It is ultimately a mix of ingredients from different systems - for example, elements from the ‘Battle for the Tower’ scenario from Warmaster, the Reconnaissance Phase from Battlegroup, etc.
And we also wanted to integrate a kind of ‘ticking clock’ that forces one side to keep an eye on the time.
So here it is, comments and as usual remarks are always welcome of course, feel free to comment down below or on my Blog!

My main comment is there is no such thing as a round in CoC. Do you mean turn or phase?
-
Of course I meant Turn and not round - thanks for the note, I corrected it immediately!
-
Thank you for the Tunisia lists - saved me a lot of faffing around.

After a long break in the 28mm scale, I now had the opportunity to paint a few figures for it again.
At the end of last year, a mate and me decided to start a project for a participation game that we want to present at various cons.
As setting we decided on ‘Operation Exporter’, more precisely the fighting around Palmyra.
For the rules, we will use ‘What A Cowboy’ , which we are still adapting to our chosen setting.
While my mate will paint the French Light Desert Company (part of the legion etrangere), I took on the part of the Arab Legion.
And here is my completed squad of the Arab Legion - for WaC the figures represent 1 Lieutenant (Gunslinger), 1 Sergeant (Shootist), 2 Corporals (Greenhorn), 2 groups of normal soldiers (Henchmen) and 1 special group of soldiers (also Henchmen but with special rules) equipped with a Lewis LMG.
This squad can of course also lay the foundation for a complete platoon for Chain of Command.
The Lewis LMG team are irregular Arabs from Artizan, the rest is from Woodbine from their WW1 Ottoman range.
Many more pics can be found on my Blog as usual:

This is great. Exporter is a fascinating campaign: I've got a paused project in 15mm for CoC. From memory, some of my inspiration is from Exporter games you've done in the past?
Your Arab legion are looking very good.
-
The Arab Legion look great! Nice to see one of the lesser-known fronts of the war represented.
-
Mice job on them Arab fellers. They look the business...

Thank you guys, really appreciate that :)

I have once again expanded my terrain collection.
This time I've added an oasis in which I've tried to depict the typical cultivation on the various levels - from the shady date palms on the top level to fruit trees, vegetables and grasses on the lowest level, where you can also find the water management channels.
A lot more pictures and details can be found on my blog, where there is also an article about the WiP stage:
