Title: 15mm Space Station Zero and 5PFH -new spaceship walls 3/8
Post by: 6mmfan on June 20, 2024, 10:12:53 AM
Last year I started on a project to play Space Station Zero using 15mm scifi figures. Although I have a bunch of sci-fi already in 28mm I was looking for something smaller and more portable, and in 28mm I still needed a lot of figures. Space Station Zero is a solo/coop game set in the interior of a large derelict ship with around 20 scenarios as part of a campaign, and is published by Snarling Badger games

I ordered some figures from Alternative armies as well as GZG including crews, mutants, robots and plants. I forgot to photo the AA figures before painting them, so here is the GZG figures (mostly robots). I could have used the same robot figures for all the different types in the game but I wanted each type represented with different figures.

I was planning to make a box for the board which is 22x30 inches but I am converting all measures to cm for 15mm. I found this storage box which is slightly bigger, and it gives me space to add details to interior walls. I'll knock out the center pieces and create an insert to make the floor level when it is fully expanded.

Also I have some 28mm sci-fi scatter terrain I made which I have started converting to 15mm. I made too much 28mm terrain so its good to repurpose some to 15mm.

I'll be interested to see how this project goes. I have purchased Space Station Zero, but have yet to start playing it, so any comments on the rules will be interesting as well.

Likewise! Keen to see how you tackle the board, and ready to pilfer your ideas for terrain

Dude, you just described what's on my table...

But it's been slow going on the Terrain. Well and the distraction of Bug Hunt in the 5PH Compendium.

Thanks guys, I'm very motivated to get started playing this game.

I scratch built some gun turrets for one of the scenarios in SSZ. The scenario requires 2 but if I play co-op then I need 4 (I think) so I thought why not! The base is a 28mm Dungeon and lasers sci fi part with a couple of 20mm slotta bases on top and Iliad Studio radar part IIRC. I added some spare 28mm scifi gun barrels and finger nail greebles to finish it off.

Also is one of my Alternative Armies crew and this guy is a spaceship pilot.

Here's the first figures I painted - some crew for SSZ. They are all Alternative Armies figures and from their various 15mm sci-fi and Ion Age ranges.

Octopod Medic - not the greatest sculpt and pretty blobby

Bearded Mercenary

I'm not super happy with them and I think its due to the layering being too subtle and the varnish dulling the colours. I'll adjust my painting style as I pretty much painted them with the same techniques I use for  28mm figures but they don't have the same surface area. I'll go for stronger contrasts between colours and layers.

Interesting, these are also the two Sci-Fi skirmish games I've been ruminating on (not counting bigger battle Xenos Rampant). I did get in one co-op game of Space Station Zero awhile back. Here's the battle report:
https://leadlegionaries.blogspot.com/2023/01/first-game-of-space-station-zero.html

I enjoyed it, but despaired of porting it over to my Sunday night game crew where we average 6-7 players per evening. I thought maybe to make it competitive and run two boards side by side, but that would have meant more reworking what I'd done so far. I think the system is solid. I have heard that some missions are dang tough. The fact that you can't make up losses seems to me to limit the campaign. Since you're a space ship docked, why not replace lost crew with guys still back on the ship? I realize it is a game balance thing, too. However, I'm sure a little tweaking would fix that.

As for Five Parsecs, I am looking forward to trying that in the next month or so as a straight up solo game. I pretty much never play solo, but figured what the heck? Give it a try...looks interesting.

Good luck on your games. If you want more on my prep, you can just read through all blog entries tagged with Space Station Zero:

I took the flying part of a 25mm figure that was supposed to have a rider and modified that. It turned out okay, and would look good in either 15's or 28's, I think.

Here's what I made for swarm bots. I had some large drawing pins and I added MDF disks to the bottom and various pieces of wire/pins.and some small bits of nail art like the dome and brass pieces. Also there is a shoulder pad from a 28mm figure.

I did something similar using wooden craft pieces from the hobby store and extra weapons and such (for the melee bots).

Here is the mutants I painted for SSZ. They are 15mm mutants from Alternative armies and great figures with lots of character and only a few double ups on figures poses.

I wanted them to look like ex Starship crew so I painted them still wearing the remnants of their uniforms of white and turquoise, and the odd red shirted victim. These came out better than my crew figures so far who lack contrast on some of the colours and could be black lined better.

Here's my first batch of GZG bots - I'll use them as medical bots in SSZ, hence the red and white colours. they are very nice little sculpts and pretty quick to paint.

Also I have created 3D printed bases with recesses in them for the figure base to go in, so I can get a smooth and flat surfaces. Its a bit of extra work but I liked the completed bases. I draw on different lines and circles to represent the flooring and then weather the base and add some chipping with a sponge. I'll match the floor color of my board with the same colour to help bring it together.

I got back from my winter holiday and here are the swarm bots which featured on page 1 of this thread. I used a few different decals to break up the smooth areas of the bots as it was pretty hard to highlight the main sphere. I was also experimenting with different camera settings and the photo came out a bit grainy  :-I

I'm returning to this project after a long absence. I have been working away on some bits but my motivation dropped as I struggled to paint the figures as well as I would like. I tried to paint them like 28mm figures but that doesn't work, so I am still experimenting. Meanwhile I painted these GZG bots as they were nice and easy.

And I've done some more on the Space Station Zero board. I removed the dividers and I've used some mdf pieces from Iliada Studio for the flooring and some extra MDF frame pieces left over from 28mm buildings (I found the MDF frame pieces from 4Ground etc extremely useful for scratch building).

The end pieces are removeable so the the sides can slide back into the tray

I added some walls to the end pieces although its not very clear in the picture. I've left a gap around the edges to decorate the walls but I'll paint the floor first.

Thanks

I've been making some scatter terrain specifically for the SSZ scenarios by kitbashing various bits. I have to be mindful as most of my things in the bits box is for 28mm so it can look too big for 15mm.

Here's some of the 6 Control pods which were made from patterned plasticard, Tau gun barrels and the ever useful nail art pieces on top.

and 3 Fabricators. Somehow I made 3 earlier and then forgot about them so I made these! But the others will appear in my medical bay in the future.

These were made using spare mdf pieces, some Covid tests and guns from a Dungeons and lasers kickstarter. There is some 6mm epic ammo crates which I use as consoles and more plasticard and mdf offcuts along with a craft metal wheel.

Good to see Space Station Zero getting some play. I feel bad that I geared up for the rules, then after doing one game, determined they wouldn't work for our large, Sunday evening group. It is more set for a smaller coop or free-for-all, or solo.

Yeah its taken me longer than I hoped to get enough finished for a game. I painted all the figures but then struggled for terrain ideas. I'll mostly be playing this solo or with one other, and that was one of the main appeals. Of course I can use all the figures and terrain for other games which is great.

I'm making slow progress on the Space Station Zero board but I've managed to finish most of the base colours for the floor. First it was sprayed with a light grey spraycan and then I used an airbrush to go over all the joins between the floor panels.

It doesn't matter if some of the lines are not straight as I hope to heavily weather the floor and cover (or embrace) any imperfections.

Next I used a 0.3mm black permanent pen and marked out all the panel lines (I didn't bother with the rivets!). Then I painted the hazard stripe sections and I may add a couple more colours to areas before weathering.

The Fabricators shown earlier are now finished and I'm very please with how they came out. I decided on a dark green colour and fair bit of weathering to make them look well used. I've got a very old GW paint pot of metallic blue which I don't use often and this projects seems like a good one to use this colour for.

Thanks, the Space Station Zero scenarios usually require multiples of different terrain pieces, so I make them all the same, although they dont have to be and I could use anything to represent the pieces.

Next up is a few simple vents made from a Kings of War 20mm base with a 3D printed fan in the middle and tiny rivets made from nail art.

And a large Fission reactor whcih took me a while to come up with something I liked. It is made from a broken 3D printer fan (the base and the fins part), a kinder egg, a christmas tree decoration, mdf leftovers and lots of other bits

The Fission reactor is all done. Some of the antenna bits broke off the dome so I left them off as I doubt they will survive the rigours of wargaming!

My progress on this is still going slowly and the board is buried under a bunch of other terrain commissions on my workbench. However I did manage to finish these computer terminals from Khurasan, which I felt inspired to paint them in a 1970s IBM mainframe style. There is a desk that was part of the set which has not been painted yet.

And this piece which I made originally for 28mm, was repurposed for 15mm  by removing a large 28mm console, and a floor was added. Excuse the crooked decals!

Post by: 6mmfan on August 02, 2025, 09:28:39 PM
I've made some interior spaceship walls to break up the large open area. I'll make some doors once I figure out a design I like.

The Walls are made from 3mm foamex (Foamed PVC) and I added different 20mm square bases and lots of greebles made from mdf kit frames, plasticard, 3D printed parts, wire, model kit parts, card model frames, Iliada games studio pieces, sprues, nail art domes and whatever else I could find in my container of junk I've been collecting.

I kept adding more and more bits and they are more detailed than I planned, and that will make them slower to paint, but I'm happy with them. I haven't decided on a colour yet but I want a contrasting colour to the grey floor.

I think it really depends on whether you want a clean Star trek look or a grimy rusty steel Necromunda one ( including hazard stripes).

Various shades of grey + black + white and the occasional red or yellow stripes or number decals would add a nice touch of colour.

I've made some progress on the walls and they now have the base colours done with airbrush panel highlights (although its hard to see in the pictures).

After spraying the bottom half dark grey I masked it off using cheap painters masking tape which worked pretty well. Then I airbrushed the top part with a few shades of blue. I thought about trying to add some fluro light sources (OSL) but its seemed too hard but I may if I find a way to do it.

Then I peeled off the masking tape and a few of the cardboard pieces had their top layer peeled off. I'll repair some areas while others I will weather heavily. I like the colours and although there are some touchups to do, the two tone colour has worked out great.

Next I'll paint some of the vertical pieces a different colour and pick out the details. Then add some edging highlighting and weathering.

Remember you can always go back and add more effects (lighting) after they are "done."

I've switched back to working on the board while I finish the walls. I added some more weathering which was done with a combination of air brushing, and using sponge to chip and "scrub" the areas lightly.

Also I didn't like the large open channel in the middle of the board, so I cut up some cardboard pieces to fill in some of the gaps, which I will have to go back and paint and weather around the area to blend them in.

I might add a little bit more weathering but I don't want to look too much especially once I add terrain, if that makes sense!

It took a while but the walls are finished. I kept to a few colours which helped speed up the painting and it also gave the pieces a consistent look. I'll use the same colours for the walls of the board. The walls had the edges highlighted and then chipped, followed   some streaks and washes.

Earlier in the thread I made some simple vents and I forgot to post a picture of them painted.

And I've started working on some doors for around the edges of the board. The main piece came from a 28mm Sarissa Girder Bridge frame that I built for a commission. It is an interesting shape and its not something I would have scratch built. Most of the other parts are laser cut card pieces or the frame from Iliada Studio and a plasticard door.

After a lot of cutting and gluing the outer walls for my spaceship interior are finished. I followed the same style  and used the same materials as the standalone walls but added more vents and the doors shown earlier.

I'm very happy with these and the board is really starting to come together now the walls are built.

I've been rereading Space Station Zero in preparation for my first game and I noticed there was a few more pieces of terrain to make.

One of the scenarios has 2 control panels - one intact and one broken, so I made a similar looking panel to the Khurasan panel I have.

Also the first scenario has 3 broken pipe markers so I made some markers to show the pipes that have broken through the floor. The pipe is hard to see because I used a clear plastic tube.

And finally I finished 3 more small walls pieces for some flexibility

With the walls almost finished (still need highlights and weathering) I had some free time to try out my first game of Space Station Zero. It was the first game of the campaign and a learning game to work out the rules and make sure I had everything. I discovered that my crew design was not great, so I will redesign them and start the campaign again. I found a much better QRS (from the Facebook group) and crew roster after the game, as I found I was constantly flicking between pages checking on rules and the scenario and equipment during the game. So no AAR at this time, but a few photos instead. Also I found most of the scenery I've made so far was for specific scenarios and I was lacking generic scenery, and I raided my Star Wars Imperial Assault boardgame and a few pieces of 28mm scenery to help fill the table. And yeah, the walls didn't quite fit because some of the details by the corners meant they didn't sit completely flush.

Despite all this it was a great game and my half scale ruler from Litko was great, and the game looked really good and played well. I am looking forward to playing the campaign and all the work seems worth it.
