Well, today a five-month old secret project was dashed by a buddy digging around in my gaming boxes while I was distracted, playing another game. However, as the project was intended to be revealed in the next few weeks...not all is lost.
I have been toiling in secret to build the start of a vast Chaos Dwarf army for use with my game, Famine, Sword, & Fire (which has its own thread). This project is big enough I didn't want it getting lost in that thread, so it deserves its own space.
This is the start of a rather extensive project, but...at the rate I've been painting, it may be done in six months for all I can tell!

And for the record...yes I am knocking out the majority of the Hobgoblins first. They will form 60%+ of the army and are many of the "core" units for the force. Lore-wise (only using original lore from the original books/White Dwarfs) Chaos Dwarfs are rare and use Hobgoblins extensively in battle. There will be no silly huge walking war machines or silly flame-demong things...just classic Chaos Dwarfs.
-
Very Nice.
Are these 3d prints or an alternate manufacturer or classic GW.
Glad you are sticking to the original lore and not having the lava demon things. It all looks great.
-
These are all 3D prints from a guy called Fabelzel who does a wide range of classic Chaos Dwarf styled minis. He mimics the style perfectly and the minis are generally an absolute joy to paint (in the way some older GW sculpts are).
-
They fit the old style perfectly. Do you have any of the old ones?
-
Nope, never owned any back in the day. I wasn't even a huge fan of Chaos Dwarfs, but finding one 3D sculptor who was so dedicated to one faction and doing such splendid work...my heart warmed like the Grinch on Christmas. lol
-
I love these.
-
Absolutely beautiful work
-
Wow! Those look great. Love the hobgoblins.
-
You can't go wrong with Dwarfs with giant hats, great work.
Will you be using any slave units of Orcs and Goblins or just sticking to the hobgobs and Dwarfs?
-
They look really great, I like the clean, but toned down style of the painting.
-
Not likely to use any orcs or goblins in this army. This is maybe a third of the models I have on hand at the moment. One of my buddies has a large Orc army with some goblins mixed in, so we'll be playing against them plenty. Also, lore-wise it makes sense to ally with them when fighting other 'good guy' armies, etc.
I have one unit of black orcs from my Battle Masters project I could squeeze in if needed. As it stands, I'll have plenty of models just between the dwarfs and hobgoblins at the moment.
-
Very cool 8)
-
Great stuff - as I started looking at the pictures, I did wonder if I had mis-read the title of the thread, then some big hats hove into view!
-
Yeah, as with all my army projects...I always start with the core, the most "boring" or time intensive units. I like the old lore that Chaos Dwarfs are rare, so the bulk of my basic infantry, archers, etc. will be proper Hobgoblins. Don't worry, I have plenty of big hat boys to follow...and ones with hooves...some funnel-guns...some assassins...some big ole winged things...plenty of wolves...mechanical-limbed wizards, big boomy gun things, and what have you...
-
Big boomy guns that shake the earth?
Looking forward to seeing the wolf riders.
I need to find someone who makes Kev Adams style goblins for 3d printing.
-
Very nice! Love the bolt thrower
-
This army looks great! And you're not kidding- the sculptor really managed to capture the feel of the 4th edition Chaos Dwarfs and Hobgoblins really well. I think the first issue of White Dwarf I ever bought had the Chaos Dwarf army list in it, and my friend got the Death Rocket, which was the only Chaos Dwarf unit we ever had in a major "Hodgepodge of Chaos" army (before the "Rule of Cool" was a thing, there was the "Rule of this is all we can afford and we're going to say they can be in the same army"). Can't wait to see more!
-
Back in the day, an actual Chaos Dwarf army was way out of my league. Not to mention that all the
cool kids nerds played 40K, so that's what I did as well, since I was a cool kid nerd as well :D
Seriously though; in my direct surroundings, there was nobody who actually played WHFB, so I never got into it, even though I really wanted to.
My first fancy were Wood Elves; I especially loved the Waywatchers. But I never got further than buying the army book. But then, through White Dwarf and exploring catalogues, display cabinets etc, I discovered Chaos Dwarfs, and I was sold.
I just loved the whole Sumerian/Assyrian/Babylonian style they had going, and I knew that would be the army for me.
Eventually ::)
Because it took at least one more decade before I had the disposable income to actually start collecting the beginnings of an army. Sadly, that coincided with the whole Ebay Chaos Dwarf incident, so things got expensive extremely fast , which put a bit of a brake on the whole project again. This was around 2004-ish if I recall correctly.
For those that don't know about this, in short: Chaos Dwarf miniatures were hecka cheap back in those days. I'm talking about GBP1,- per metal miniature, sometimes, in large batches, even less. The plastic rank and file fillers were often just 50p a piece; they were just not a very popular army (never really were I understand, but why?)
So a couple of entrepeneurish type started buying up every last Chaos Dwarf miniature on Ebay. Shipping was still really cheap back in those days and customs tarifs were only there for large purchases, so they accumulated literal tons of Chaos Dwarfs, Hobgoblins etc for extremely cheap in a very short span. This probably took a year or so? Then they left a bleak, Chaos Dwarf-less Ebay landscape to simmer for a bit, before putting their stock up on Ebay at ridiculously inflated prices. They used multiple/many accounts for this and made an absolute killing.
See; other sellers would check going rates before putting up their auctions, and obviously followed suit, and this ensured that prices would remain that high, because nobody wanted to miss out on a huge profit of course.
They singlehandedly f*cked up a previously sensible and friendly market. It opened the door for recasters, scalpers and market-savvy types to use and abuse the marketplace, which has never been the same since. Because these practices were also tried on other ranges, be it a lot less succesful. Bottom line is that prices were inflated, and never dropped down to previous levels.
It cause quite the storm back in the day, but yeah; there it is. The reason I could not get started on my own CD army. But I kept my eyes open and when the occasional (relative) bargain came along, I scooped it up. And slowly, but surely, my stock grew to the point where I would be able to put together an actual army.
Which I obviously still haven't been able to accomplish due to butterfly syndrome ::)
What I did do was paint up an initial goblin slave unit (a block of Skull Pass Night Goblins). And then another, and then another, until I realized I was now actually building a Night Goblin army lol
I do have a unit of Chaos Dwarf infantry in my cabinet of shame, started, but never finished. I should get cracking one of these days...
I really love what you've done with your printed army. Had the technology been available at the time, I would have gone that route too; quite a bit cheaper and lighter I reckon! The sculpts indeed fit almost seamlessly with the original ones. If I'm ever short on certain miniatures, I will check out this sculptor too.
I take it he's also active on Chaos Dwarfs Online?
Anyway; can't wait to see what you'll do with the larger units such as Bull Centaurs and the artillery train :)

Those B@$7@&d$. Good idea I guess but wrecked it for your everyday hobbyist.

Bit late to this thread - I really like the paint jobs you have done on these figures so far. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the army come together
-
Gorgeous work Elbows, and lovely to see some Big Hats around here! This is one of those occasions where 3D printing shines - filling spaces otherwise occupied by eye watering prices.
Lovely painting and basing, mate.
-
Thanks for all the comments!
I hadn't heard of the Chaos Dwarf eBay incident, but that doesn't surprise me at all. This whole army just came along at the right time...and ticks all the boxes.
1) Weird and rare.
2) 'Affordable' (I wouldn't say cheap, but compared to comical eBay prices...quite)
3) Consisting of two races it gives me a nice variety to paint
4) Just different enough to the other 350+ minis I've painted for the game so far
5) Happens to have units which more or less cover almost all of the unit types available in FSF...so that worked a treat.
6) Wonderful sculpts that are fun to paint.

100%. I have pictures (actual film!) somewhere of my 2nd edition army from high school. Units of 3-5 Eldar aspect warriors, maybe 10 guardians, a few war walkers and dreadnoughts, a random Space Wolf terminator squad, a single Leman Russ and a squad of Valhallan Imperial Guard (the latter three being gifts from relatives who didn't understand what I played, lol). Rather sad that GW has abandoned the 'kid with pocket money' customer.
-
Incredible work! Always loved those 4th edition Chaos Dwarfs!
-

Kid using second mortgage to fund plastic addiction?
-
Lovely stuff, the old GW Hobgoblins remain one of my favourite units. Must find those Chaos Dwarfs.
-
the hobgoblins are nice, pity there's not more variety for command figures.
-

Mine too. Especially Sneaky Gitz. :D
The whole Lap Around rule was just so characterful, and I lament its passing in younger editions of WHFB. It has not been replicated in other rules sets either.
Which is a bummer, because I would have really liked using those rules in an actual game one day... ::)
-
the hobgoblins are nice, pity there's not more variety for command figures.
There are a handful out there of remixed models by some other users, but yeah, I can cope since I am only using 2-3 units. I mean...heck, the core Hobgoblins are only three poses :D
-
Lovely units! I'd heard that same ebay story and have seen the big hats go for ridiculous sums of money whilst the original renegade dwarf sculpts went for a fraction of the cost. I understand Fabelzel isn't producing any new sculpts and was shutting down his Patreon?
-
I only bought them through an ebay/etsy seller, but yes I have heard Fabelzel just had a daughter and is not sculpting at the moment? Not entirely sure. It does look like he covers most of the bases, which is nice.
I received some Brawniac sculpts as freebies from the same printer but don't care for them near as much and won't be using them.
-

A small detachment of Hobgoblin 'sneaky gits' completed this afternoon.

-
My favourite backstabbing b*stards :D
You've absolutely done them justice and I really like the muted colours you've used. A great addition to your army!
-
Thanks, I'm the least happy with them of all the units, but...I'll cope. lol I have another detachment of four bases which I'll do shortly.
-
Excellent! These units look great, and I really like the way that the "three models per base" allows for positioning them in realistic ways. Great work!
-
It's also all that fits on a 40mm..and it's pushing it for some models (hence why command bases only have two!). It helps though, since most units only have three poses, so I have to get inventive.
-
They look cool. I always wanted a unit of these guys for my Orcs and goblins WFB army because having hobgoblins in your army made them immune to animosity. Kind of a broken rule that one.
-
Having a game this evening and one tomorrow...so time to blood the Chaos Dwarfs. I don't have an ideal army, but enough to run some games. I finished my first unit of Wolf Riders and my first hero, a general.

-
Very nice. The general looks great. I love the white beard and moustache.
The hobgoblins look great, I'm not sold on the sculpts for the wolves though they look slightly Disney to me. You've done a nice PJ on them though and they'll look great on the tabletop.
-
NGL I take pride in helping funding those fabelzel models they are fantastic
-
Yeah, if I hadn't stumbled up on his sculpts I would have never bothered with the army. The ability to buy 95% of the army from the same sculptor sold me. Having everything stylistically the same is huge for me. I've seen some other sculptors doing Chaos Dwarf stuff, but none of them are doing it in the Perry style of the 90's, and they don't 'meld'.
Fabelzel's stuff is also excellent because it's designed for gaming...everything is chunky in the way the old GW metals were. I see a LOT of 3D sculptors get carried away with 'true scale', and ultra fine details, etc...not this stuff. It's absolutely sculpted perfectly for painting and more robust than a lot of the other resin stuff I've received for other projects.
-
The sculpts really are good, and your painting makes them come alive.
I'm actually tempted of having a friend print a couple or so for me since I see a few sculpts here and there that wouldn't look too out of place in a regular dwarf unit with the right paint job.
-
Fantastic army, really great painting! I love the classic Chaos Dwarfs, and I've got a load of the Fabelzel stuff favourited on Etsy for when the time comes. :D
-
A misery in two parts unfolded this weekend...the fledgling Chaos Dwarf warband is now 0-2. One game was very close..the other not so much. The second game was a comedy of failed charges, awful rolls and just poor luck. It could have been much closer... Sadly I only snapped pictures of the second game (more on the blog).

They may have failed, but they look mightily handsome doing it!
I agree with beefcake: the white beard and moustache look fantastic on your general.
-
That’s a magnificent looking game! It’s never a loss, when the armies look that good.

The current status of the army...with a lot more to go. The initial hype has worn off, so I'm not painting at the break-neck speed I have been, but this was planned to be a pretty lengthy project.

Not my favourite mini, so I wanted to get him out of the way. A half-finished sculpt of Astrogath from Fabelzel. I likely won't use him often (he'd be 'Legendary Hero'), I'll have him serve as a sorcerer until I get some other ones painted.

He may not be your favorite figures, but you did an excellent job painting him! The banner turned out well, very tidy.

Aye, my thoughts exactly. What's not to like, he looks great with the work he received!
-
Great work, and the battle pictures look really fun (sorry the Chaos Dwarfs didn't do so well)!
I feel like your playing surface and terrain look a lot like how one might imagine "the Dark Lands" of WFB. I always thought GW could have done more to flesh out how the Chaos Dwarfs lived, what their objectives were, how their society worked, and its relationship to the already established Chaos, but then again, maybe it's more fun to take the seed of an idea and make your own stuff- that's what we've been doing on the other side of the Old World (mostly Albion) and it's provided years of fun campaigning.
Thanks for sharing!
-
Yeah, I'm more of a fan of "tease, don't tell", lol. I think the scraps of the old Chaos Dwarf book are suitable enough for me. Also they're one of the armies that has a simple goal: slaves for work and sacrifices, so they're dead easy to put into any conflict/fight.
I have a nice 'normal' table full of greenery, but I wanted to have a separate biome of sorts for the dead lands. Not in love with the mats I received (Deep Cut website showed these more desaturated and closer to the rocks that I have), but I did pick up some tar pools, and tar rivers and silly stuff like that. Just enough to make it a different place to play.
I gave in and ordered some Black Orcs from the same sculptor, so I'll have a unit of those to add to the mix eventually (they'll likely be last).

Got in a larger 2v2 game over the weekend...

-
Great project - very cool indeed.
-
Thanks. We had an amusing realization about 3/4s of the way through the game. Of the four players and four armies...three of the armies were entirely 3D printed. That was a bit eye-opening for me, realizing how significantly it had impacted our army builds.
-
Very nice. Love the terrain too. Looks authentically like an open ground area just outside the woods.
-
Good looking game.
How had 3D printing impacted the army builds? Had it limited your unit choices based on what STLs where available, or freed up what size units you do as you can print more figures so cheaply?
-
I worded it poorly, it didn't impact how the armies were constructed...simply that we're now in the age of 3D printing. The quality and cost of good 3D prints has easily surpassed GW quality/prices, though I'd still prefer to work with plastic.
I wouldn't be running Chaos Dwarfs at all if I had to buy old used metal minis off eBay for $13 a mini, etc. My buddy wouldn't be running a large Dwarf army nor Bretonnians if he had to buy the few GW kits available, etc.
-
Aah, indeed. I’m just starting to scratch the surface of 3d printing - through requesting prints from a mate. But the variety, and quality of what can be produced is huge.
There are definitely challenges on the scope of some ranges, but other ranges are bigger than many traditionally produced ones.
My only concern is over the commercial longevity of the 3d printing ‘industry’ seems to be a lot of hobby produced files out there, where cost is probably very much lower than it really should be if someone was running a full-time business. Let alone the impact on traditional miniature production companies.
-
I think there will be a huge mix of impacts from the increase in 3D printing. I think small mom-and-pop shops doing old hand-sculpted metals will suffer a bit, though people who want that style will continue to buy them.
Companies like GW will be fine because they produce kits every other week, and charge insane prices (which people pay)...so they'll labour on, though stuff like their Forgeworld stuff will disappear. People who are 3D printing large GW styled armies...weren't going to buy the GW stuff anyway, so that's not technically a lost customer.
Companies like Victrix will probably be fine, as a lot of people don't want 3D printed minis, and Victrix has fantastic prices and great sculpts/kits. I wouldn't want 3D prints of something I can get in plastic at a reasonable cost, so I don't see it replacing any of that...unless your prices are stupid, or your sculpts suck. Even if I myself owned a quality 3D printer...I wouldn't print 30 hoplites if I could buy them in plastic, etc. I might print a cool general, or a special cavalry model, or an extra chariot, or a banner or some shields or heads or something...but I'd always take plastic over resin when given a chance - and I think "most" gamers would as well.
With the right combination of large orders and discounts, I get my Chaos Dwarf minis a bit less than $2 a mini..and that's shipped, so it's a very fair price, while I know the printer isn't spending that much resin to make them, so I think it ends up being a solid purchase. I am only hesitant about the longevity of resin in various environments. I think it's very possible we'll see a 'great resin catastrophe' in 10 years time as resin becomes more brittle over time, etc. So, best to get my gaming and money's worth out of them while they're brand new. lol
-
Agree with Elbows. I've bought a few interesting figures in resin, but most of my figures are still good old plastic and metal. I have found many of the resin to be entirely too brittle to be played with on a regular basis. Perhaps it's just me, but a few tumbles, the odd mishap while painting ... I find a lot of my resin etsy prints snap pretty easily.
I do, however, know of more than a few folks who have entire armies of resin models. I'm not doing that, and cannot imagine carrying those models from game to game.
-
Yeah it depends entirely on the resin, how it's printed, and the sculpt. It's one of the key highlights of these Fabelzel prints. The guy I get them from prints them really well, better than anyone else I've tried (and better than all my buddies!).
But more importantly the sculpts are robust, and made for painting/gaming. Way too many 3D sculptors are going GW style and over-styling, and using non-heroic proportions or real-scale weapons, ankles, hands, etc...all of which means your resin mini has a terrible fate ahead.
These minis all have chonky handles on weapons, chonky details, chonk...chonk, and chonk. They're still hosed if I drop them on a floor from table height, but most of my plastics would lose weapons/shields/arms similarly.
I have received some random etsy purchases that I basically tossed right in the trash due to being super slender, brittle, broken in the package or just way too thin to bother trying to put on a table.
-
Finished another detachment of Sneaky Gits. These will likely run as detachments in the game, but they can combine into a larger single unit if necessary.

Very cool. Love the variation in grasses too.
-
Ah yes, more Sneaky Gits are always good. Especially when painted to such a nice standard! 8)
Do they lap around?
-
So much great nostalgia! I had a large Chaos Dwarf army back in the day; it was always a people magnet when it came to the club mostly because of how rare it was!
Your painting is fantastic on this army. The 3D printing is perfect for this style of project too!
-
Ah yes, more Sneaky Gits are always good. Especially when painted to such a nice standard! 8)
Do they lap around?
Technically no, however detachments (i.e. units of 3-4 bases) can take specific traits, including stuff like 'Backstabber', etc. which provide a bonus for attacking units which are engaged with other friendly units. So there are build-a-bear workshop style trait lists allowing you to build units that "feel" like their counterparts in various other games.

I forgot to post up pictures from one of the games I ran last weekend against a buddy's new Undead army (filled out with Battle Masters baddies as he's a little shy on models).

Lovely work once again. This is an army I'd love to see in the flesh: so many fantastic figures!
-
I have another unit I should finish in the next day or two (weather permitting), and I'll do an updated army shot. I do think, by the end...this will be a pretty sizable force.
-
Another great looking battle and more beautiful miniatures! I think I said this before, but I really like the way the three miniatures per square base looks when you group them in units. It seems a very natural looking (dis)order especially when they are get into melee combat- like people are being shoved around, ranks don't stay nice and neat and so forth. Great stuff and thanks for sharing!
-
Thanks, Frugal. The three-per-base started as a necessity, but I agree I think it looks great on most of the minis. The Chaos Dwarfs themselves are tough to layout like that, but...it is what it is!
Another unit of Hobgoblin cavalry, archers this time.

A quick updated army picture. I'd imagine this army is around 65% complete at this point.

-
I like those a lot! I took a closer look at the basing, too, it looks quite excellent. The colours in the static grass and the ground really give that dry steppe/ wasteland feel.
-
Thanks, yeah the basing was intended to match a wasteland...sadly as you can see from the pictures, the Deepcut mats I received are far more saturated than they show on their site (sadly something I find with a lot of mat companies!).
It looked like a solid match from images on the page...but when it arrived it was vastly more orange/reddish tint and doesn't match the basing. However, maybe I'll get other mats in the future.
-
The army looks really good. Once its done it'll be amazing.
-
More great stuff! What a cool looking army. Thanks for sharing!
-
That is amazing work!
-
Super cool to see a Chaos Dwarf army come together. It's interesting how hobgoblin heavy it is, I hadn't realized that, but it makes sense when I think about it. It's definitely a great-looking army.
-
I'm only using the original 90's lore (as with all things, I find GW's lore to get worse over time). The army build is Hobgoblin forward, though most of the remaining units are proper Chaos Dwarfs.
Lore-wise, I'm aiming for 30-40% Chaos Dwarfs with the bulk being Hobgoblins. I can also run the Hobgoblins as their own army (scouting, raiding ahead of the proper army), hence the handful of characters, etc. I'm doing the Hobgoblins first because they represent the bulk light/cheap units of the army which are kind of an FSF core you want to have available. They're more versatile than heavier/more expensive counterparts.
In FSF, units come in four levels of experience, so for theme..most Hobgoblin units are remaining Levy/Regular (the bottom two levels), while Chaos Dwarfs will be at least Regular, if not Veteran or Elite.
There are also light and heavy versions of most units in FSF (infantry, cavalry, chariots, etc.) so the Hobgoblins are all light, while most of the Chaos Dwarfs will be heavy. Bull centaurs will be heavy cavalry, while the wolf riders are all light cavalry, etc. In this way the army will cover most unit types, and play thematically. Indeed I even plan on some battles in the future where the Chaos Dwarfs will be culling/fighting the Hobgoblins (as they're known for being the very most treacherous of all the greenskins).
-
I like your approach to the army and the lore! One of my first White Dwarf magazines was the one with the Chaos Dwarf army list (I think it had Tyranids on the cover) and I always thought they should have leaned more heavily into the lore for the army list building- like have a bunch more units of hobgoblins or enslaved orcs & goblins than Chaos Dwarf units. If I remember the report on the Battle of Anurell's tomb (sp?) against the High Elves had basically one unit of everything (which makes sense for showcasing the models, but not from the perspective of the Chaos Dwarfs as the masters of these hordes of low-value troops. Then there's the Bretonnian Knight to Peasant ratio... and's he's off on a tangent, folks!)
-
Yeah the lore is pretty simple: there aren't many Chaos Dwarfs...so they hire hobgoblins to fight for them...and the hobgoblins get protection and aren't slaves like all the other places the Chaos Dwarfs attack/seize, etc.
I have one lore-breaking model (a bull centaur sorcerer) who I'll paint up, but may not use without some kind of excuse. In the lore they stat flatly that there are no bull centaur sorcerers but the model was pretty cool. :D
-
Wow, I haven't posted new minis for this army in a couple of months. I had taken a break to knock out a bunch of units for the mercenary company, but didn't realize I'd neglected the stumpy boys for so long. That makes me sad.
Another basic sorcerer:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjDB0i58nmgemogukvnn4ETM-zFqsW3h1kvQVL4DoCEqJBQ-cnLE_e5nrAxB-Ua9W7tyhpWAewbgyQkhruH3l2um8i6KP95-qDqcF2pqtEfzkcqpJmiPDPjDVFCy4nX5HsgzUvohcIKGINxUlYIs3c_GHsPTB3c-MrIsoE005fWfXL76Ery1icwTqMz8MU/s2448/Chaos%20Dwarf%20Sorcerer%202.jpg)
And...I randomly decided I wanted some Hobgoblin chariots a week or two ago. I mused over some 3D printed options, but then stumbled upon someone selling the Old World Orc Boar chariot box for $30 less than normal, so I snagged a copy. I kit-bashed both of them up and modified them a bit. One is made as a light chariot (with archer), and the other is a heavy chariot. Only differentiated by the beasts drawing them, some extra beefy wheels/scythes, and some additional shields, etc. The heavy chariot is driven by some kind of character.

Very cool. The battle looks great.
-
Those chariots look great, and the battle pictures are fantastic.
-
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
-
The pictures are candy for the eyes! :-*
-
Thanks,
We're planning a 'White Dwarf' style battle report for one of our upcoming games. Basically taking notes, and quick pictures...then setting up sexier photos (no tokens, dice, visible backgrounds, etc.) for the game, and writing up a proper battle report, etc. We'll see when we get around to it.
I'm working on some proper Chaos Dwarfs at the moment, and snagged a bunch of Old World kits for my mercenaries - the local store had 25% off Old World, and 3% extra for cash. I harp on GW for having terrible prices all the time, but while the sprue are old, their Old World kits are far more fair, and even 'reasonable' when you get a discount like that! lol

Actually...yes.
I finished the absolute slog that is my second unit of proper Chaos Dwarf warriors. While I love the minis, phew it's a lot of work. This is likely the last of the warrior units, but there are plenty more units en route!

Really nice looking- great color scheme and execution!
-
Army is now of a size that I'm struggling to take good pictures of it, but here is the latest...maybe 5-6 units since my last army picture.

More pics on the blog.

Latest unit is my first small block of Chaos Dwarf Blunderbusses. They've got warriors mixed in as I plan on running them with some fighty traits to make them more versatile.

-
Great job on them, I really like this colour scheme!
-
The army looks great! Nice blunderbusses too!
-
Thanks, guys. I admit I struggle painting the proper Chaos Dwarfs because they're rather time intensive...and I start to run out of enthusiasm pretty quick. However, when I complete a unit, I immediately think "eh, could I do another?" lol
Still a lot to go...wizards, warlords, centaurs, artillery, taurus, llamasu...a handful more hobgoblins, etc. I found a superb 'oldhammer' styled Wyvern I wanted for a kind of Hobgoblin king, but it's only in the UK and shipped it's too expensive. Frustrating.
-
A trio of ogres that'll serve as mercenaries for the Chaos Dwarfs and Hobgoblins.

-
Very cool project. Never understood why the Chaos Dwarves were discontinued. Great paint jobs and they really look grand as units!
-
Those are great looking ogres! I've never seen them before (I assume they are also 3D prints?). Their faces remind me of the Battle Masters ogre and the Old Citadel Giant Ogres (I think that's what they were called- they were going out of production when I first got into the hobby, so I only have vague recollections of them, but I remember big chins...).
Nice work!
-
Glorious!
-
I love the ogres!
-
Very nice!
-
Yeah, they're by the same Fabelzel sculptor - not sure what they're supposed to mimic as they're quite large (and definitely "old school" styled). I actually ordered one for a different game...and got the other two as freebies with other orders. These were not really part of the plan, but when I ended up with three of them I figured a cool little narrative mercenary group of ogres - maybe brothers. Easy to slot in and make up points.
My Hobgoblins, for example, when running by themselves, don't have any heavier hitting stuff, so some ogre buddies might be a solid idea.
-
Got bored today and cleaned/primed/painted this classic piece. A 3D sculpt kit-bash, but perfectly mirrors the original.

So we wrapped up the first "chapter" of our narrative campaign on Sunday. A quick recap of the test campaign so far:
Game 01: Hobgoblin raiding party attacks a Dwarf caravan heading toward Barak Varr. The caravan narrowly escapes, but a Dwarf captain and his son are taken captive.
Game 02: The Hobgoblins attack and hinder the Dwarf search party which has enlisted some mercenary help.
Game 03: Dwarf rangers located the Hobgoblins in an abandoned mansion in the middle of the forest and attack at night, trying to rescue the prisoners. They narrowly fail.
Game 04: The Chaos Dwarfs finally arrive, with sorcerers setting up a ritual to execute the Dwarfs. The Dwarfs attack the ritual site with the help of mercenaries, but narrowly fail to stop the ritual. Both the Dwarf captain and his son are executed by Chaos Dwarf sorcerers.
As always, more pics on the blog. Not many great pics this time though!

nice looking table - love those statues

Sounds like the non-chaos dwarves got pretty trounced! They may have to reconsider their gods. Great pictures again, thanks for sharing!

With help from this forum I found and painted (poorly) a bunch of prisoners, and a flamethrower unit (which I got as a freebie from the guy who prints my stuff).
The prisoners will be scenario fodder, but can also serve as a unit with the special "sacrificial" trait...allowing them to be murdered and fed into a cannon or something equally grisly.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSlerZlx56WZDkEBp2M2-TY114ejXziatbJKMMlDQzjFidq4UgGLPs322xfVSXY54lUnLkJ7zIRD-kp3bjKajN11w9OLYIKt_s82gkW0W0YCv-9NjQ29_e9FiEZss3QIbElM64STKrIlghKn0UuPqSYu_QDHd5DgnnXPS0v7-UIJFsUXkUpMFrNA4U4wZJ/s2040/Prisoners%20(1).jpg)

The flamethrower will be either a stationary "artillery" piece, or more likely it'll be slotted into units which take the 'auxiliary missiles' trait. Basically just slot it into an existing Chaos Dwarf unit.
-
That prisoner unit is BRILLIANT! Love it!
Cheers & thanks for posting
-
Loving the prisoner unit! They look so wonderfully (horribly?) emaciated, really nice work. Love the flamethrower too! :-*
-
Great idea, wonderfully executed!
-
Those prisoners are so full of character. Outstanding!
-
Love those prisoners! The guards with them are great too and the flamethrower is very nicely painted!
-
The prisoner unit came out great! And I like those mancatcher-wielding guys. Also cool to see the variations on headgear that the sculptor has given the Chaos Dwarves. It all fits the theme of the big hats, but they're not all the same. Great work!
-
Yeah, there are a lot of hats! Painting each one is almost like painting a separate figure. lol
-
Well at least they're dwarfs, so short figures, wide but short.
-
That's the trade off...I don't have to paint legs, bodies or necks...just hats. Lots of hats. Too many hats.
-
Amazing Stuff!
Elbows, I'm in NC and was wondering if you would recommend your printer of these beauties??
-
Sure, I used a guy called LittleGoatCompany or LittleGoatCo. He's on Etsy and eBay. His prices have gone up a little bit, but I kept an eye out for sales and you frequenlty get discounts on eBay if you buy more than one set, etc. I think he's based out of Washington state.
I've never had a broken or bad delivery...though admittedly right now one package is lost in the mail that I just ordered! lol Not his fault I imagine.
The guy often includes some freebies (often with minor misprinted stuff), and he even 3D prints little shipping cases for the more fragile poses, etc. Can definitely recommend.
-
Appreciate you my friend, give the USPS a hallpass for a bit...but only for a bit ;) lol
Keep the Stunties in the spotlight :)

An alternate cannon sculpt which I don't love...but I had it, so I painted it. This will serve as a siege cannon (a larger form of artillery) for the Chaos Dwarfs.
Shown with the Earthshaker for scale.

-
This is an awesome project! I love these Fabelzel Chaos Dwarfs.
-
Very nice! I agree with you, the more detailed smaller sculpt is a bit nicer, but the sheer size of this cannon means it's sure to look very impressive on the table. Lovely painting as always :)
-
Dang, that's a big mortar/cannon! Do you use different rules for the two sizes or are they both the same? I could see a fun scenario where the Chaos Dwarves (and their downtrodden servants) have to wheel the massive gun into range of the enemy wall, and they only have one shot (how do they load that thing?), while the defenders need to sally out to stop the gun or else (in which case the gun is more of a slow moving objective than anything else). Great work as always!
By the way I'm very impressed at how you regularly turn out such numbers at such a high quality- really cool!
-
Yeah, in our rules the large cannon would be a "siege engine", so immobile and more powerful (but can only target structures, fortifications and units inside them), while the smaller one would be a normal artillery piece (and I give it the mortar trait for obvious reasons).
They're supposed to load this one with an ogre, but I didn't have a suitable place to get one without being fleeced, so I didn't bother. Siege engines can only be used in a few siege scenarios, so it's unlikely it'll see the table often, until I get a castle built...
-
Campaign Game 6...a summary.
Having lost 4/5 games, the Dwarfs have been on the back foot. After the ritual slaughter of one of their captains and his son, the Dwarfs fled, fading into the wilderness as the Chaos Dwarf host moved further along the valleys toward the Border Princes region. The Dwarfs did notice though that the Chaos Dwarfs were not advancing quickly and they were unable to figure out why (story points to follow...).
Game 6 started as an ambush scenario. 1/3rds of the slightly larger Chaos Dwarf force was kept off the table as reinforcements (in this case, I had advantage during the game thanks to a campaign card, so I was able to choose which 3rd, which helped immensely). I selected all mounted Hobgoblin units. The remaining 2/3rds of the units were deployed (as shown) in a large marching column, just shy of a river/stream.
The Dwarfs were then allowed to deploy on both sides and would take first turn. While a smaller army budget, the Dwarfs would have the advantage of ambushing and could fight for a few turns before the Hobgoblin reinforcements returned (having wandered too far from the column...as Hobgoblins are wont to do...)
Result: the Chaos Dwarfs survived much of the ambush, losing only a few units...they then re-formed in time to pressure the Dwarfs from a renewed fighting line, and the Hobgoblins which arrived quickly (units have different Reinforcement speeds, with light cavalry, chariots, etc. arriving the fastest...hence why I chose them!). The Chaos Dwarfs won 9 victory points to 8 (an army wins a scenario at 9 victory points).

Looks like another great game! Those dwarfs can't get any luck, can they? Though they clearly sprung (sprang?) the trap too soon- Wait until they've gotten at least halfway across the bridge, dwarfs!
Nice job!
-
Yeah, sadly they didn't have a choice. Because I used a strategy card to gain advantage, I was able to put all my reinforcements as my fastest units. Meaning, the Dwarfs only had one turn before my reinforcements would begin showing up. If I'd not had advantage the units which would have been reinforcements would have been randomized, meaning there's a chance that slower infantry units would have been coming to reinforce.
When a unit is a reinforcement, it has a value which is the turn it can start rolling to arrive. While Light Cavalry/Light Chariots, etc. have a Reinforcement value of 2 (so they start rolling on turn 2), stuff like Heavy Infantry is Turn 6...meaning the Dwarfs would have had much more time before anyone showed up, and then even on foot..heavy infantry would have struggled to close the distance.
Using agents, etc. you can force enemy units to become reinforcements in many scenarios, so had I been lucky enough to have some Scout agents, I could have possibly delayed his own units, etc. There's a decent amount of off-table stuff that has an impact in the game.
-
That sounds cool! Seems like you have a bunch of cool systems related to building the campaign. Also cool to hear about strategy cards- don't think I've heard of things like that since the days of WH40K 2nd edition. If I recall those were a pretty fun way to throw a bit of something extra into the game- though they did lack much rhyme or reason. It sounds like you've built them into your campaign system which is a very cool idea!
I must admit our system is far less organized and thrown together ad hoc. Though we'll occasionally do a more structured bit of a campaign, most of the time it's more of a case of "let's say what happens next is this" and we'll build some asymmetrical scenario based on what happened in the last few games. Lately we've even been abandoning points values altogether in favor of what seems like a good force for the scenario.
Thanks for sharing!
-
Right now the actual campaign system is kind of up in the air as to how detailed/crunchy it will be. Right now we're running two campaigns and they're both just narrative. If the story aligns to playtest a scenario I've written (I have maybe ten at the moment), then we use one, but several have been made up on the spot.
Right now the only campaign elements in play are weather (seasonal, with a chance for 'extreme weather' which has more of an impact on the game), a seasonal event table which isn't complete, and the use of Triumph and Defeat decks - a split deck of poker cards, where the winner draws a random Triumph card, and the loser draws a Defeat card. Defeat cards must be played during the next game, while Triumph cards may be played or held until future games. These are done using poker decks, so that you can easily play in several campaigns without needing to buy or keep track of extra components.
The Triumph deck is full of single-game bonuses, boosts to units, legendary heroes, magical items, extra traits, allied units, etc. The Defeat deck is full of single-game penalties such as sickness, exhaustion, mutinies, etc.
The weather is simple and seasonal, so that in a campaign turn ideally each player would take a turn each season then the seasons would roll over.
Scenarios also have a list of available follow-up scenarios that the winner of the scenario can pick for the next game...putting the winner in control slightly with perhaps the more advantageous position in future games, etc.
Not sure if it's going to end up being crunchy and map-based, or just loosely narrative based (my preference).
-
So, game seven occurred...pardon the table, it was just thrown together with what we could manage.
The story/scenario (as short as I can tell it):
After failing to destroy the Chaos Dwarf column, the Dwarf units fled into the wilderness. They discover that Night Goblins have planned to show the Chaos Dwarfs a long-abandoned entrance to an old Dwarf hall...which could allow the Chaos Dwarfs to travel underground and attack the Dwarf's home hall more rapidly. As the Chaos Dwarfs march toward the small doorway in the mountain, the Dwarfs arrive first and seek out old stashes of gunpowder to attempt to blow up the bridge (just inside the door is a bridge across a chasm)...

How it went:
We had to try a few games to get the scenario working out well, so we stopped and restarted a few times.
The 400 point Dwarf force had to use heroes to locate and drag loot tokens (crates of gunpowder) to the bridge, and perform an action to blow it up. We decided one crate would be a 5+ roll, two crates would be 3+, and three crates would be automatic.
I had 200 points of Chaos Dwarfs attacking the doorway to the bridge (all he had to do was hold out), and inside the hall, I would generate one or two units every turn using a little random table we constructed. So inside the hall, his Dwarfs and heroes were fighting off Night Goblins, Sneaky Gitz, etc. This was the first time the Night Goblins hit the table!
As the flood goblins and hobgoblins started slaying Dwarfs, my buddy managed to sneak two crates of gunpowder onto the bridge just as his heavy infantry (on the bridge) broke under my attack. However, as my Chaos Dwarfs were chasing and cutting down his fleeing Dwarfs, the hero lit the match and successfully blew up the bridge.
So the Chaos Dwarfs were cut off from entering the hall, but his general (a hermit wizard) was inside the hall when the bridge blew up, so we have a few narrative options going forward.
-
That's a great idea for a scenario- sounds like it was a pretty exciting game!
-
Yeah, sadly the first attempt lasted about two or three turns before I realized there was NO way I was going to be able to do anything (I had just scribbled up the scenario and woefully undercut my ability to actually do much with the rules I'd written...). Then in the second game my buddy made a rather boneheaded move which then meant there was NO way he was going to do anything...so we had dinner and then decided "best two out of three", and nailed it on the final run. lol
He had stacked a stone golem in the front of the door, so I sat back and hit it with bolt throwers and blunderbusses until it was dead, then charged in the proper Chaos Dwarfs. Inside, I was assailing one of his magical heroes with a Night Goblin shaman using magical combat (i.e. wizards duking it out at range using casting dice instead of normal fighting values). Had some sneaky gits who got to the bridge but were surprisingly beaten back by a hero, and then some Dwarfs arrived to kick the others off the table (we decided they were pushed into the chasm).
Each turn inside the hall I was able to roll a D6 for each of my table edges, but if I rolled an entry that I had no models for (i.e. they were already on the table), I didn't get it, so each turn I was getting either a low level hero or a small detachment...sometimes two, and sometimes none. It made it tough for my buddy, for sure...and he almost didn't get it done.

Ideally the "last" wolf riders I'll need to paint. I'm pretty tired of them. I've painted some 30+.
The white-adjust makes the highlights look a little funky, but..whatever. These are my skirmish archers which will help unlock entry points.

More cool stuff. I like the black cloth for the chasm, what a great idea.
-
The table was..."functional" but not attractive. While I prefer a sexier table, generally, I can cut some corners if it meets a cool scenario. lol
-
Nice looking wolf riders! You've managed to do a really consistent and cohesive job across your armies. They look great when all together on the table- something to be proud of!
-
Thanks...the army is officially in the "too big to take a picture of" phase already, and there's...a lot more to go. I keep thinking I'm close to finishing and then do the math and realize..not really :D
-
Well, I managed to barely squeeze the army into a single picture - and some close-ups (a few more on the blog as always). The army is perhaps 75-80% at this point...and yes it feels like a never-ending project despite owning all the remaining models!

That’s very impressive! It’s pretty cool to see a different army like this one - don’t often see a chaos dwarf and hobgoblin army!
-
Awesome! What a great looking force. Congratulations!
-
Nice army!
-
A truly fantastic army!
-
Awesome army! Absolute inspiration :-*
-
Quality and quantity! Superb.
-
Really incredible stuff. Totally derailed my non-chaos Dwarf project looking at these. Just dug around for the files myself and might have to paint a couple to tide me over. I absolutely love your basing too. both the cluttered nature of it and the coloring.
-
By leagues and bounds the best chaos dwarf army that I've ever seen! Well done!
-
That counts for nothing since no one else makes Chaos Dwarf armies! lol (actually seen some much grander ones in my internet travels, mainly mirroring the classic GW scheme which is much more nostalgic!)
-
Fantastic army.
That's the kind of photo that got me into wargaming back in the day.
Bravo.

I picked up some random terrain sprues for "cheap" on eBay...I've managed to produce some bits from a couple of them. I know these are parts of an AoS kit(?) but I decontructed them and covered up AoS bits, etc.

Looks like something that might be found in the Dark Lands to me- nice work!
-
Two of the other sprues I picked up were from one of the Warcry starters. If I'd looked closer, I probably would't have picked these up, as I didn't realize they had sigmarines carved into every single column...but I bashed them up into some decent little ruins.

Yeah, it's a shame GW is too obsessed with IP to create almost anything not covered with details to make it obvious what universe it's from- you did a great job though, and with the one colour over the whole thing the sigmarines don't stand out too much :)
-
I think that they details fade into the terrain when they aren't picked out in a different colour so you should be fine.
At least it didn't have Skaven iconography all over it
-
Yeah, I can ignore it suitably well. lol
Sadly the last two sprues of the eBay lot I got turned out to be LOTR "corners"...from what I can tell, so now I need to get inventive to find a use for them.

I wouldn't have guessed these were GW... I got very excited that there were terrain sprues I'd not come across before...

I think they look fine: the sigmarines are subtle enough they could be a random heroic warrior. I'm quite happy to use them for my Conan/Arabian Nights setting.
I like the changes you've made to the gryph-hound pedestals and the plaque things. That does do a really good job of making them more generic.

Game #8: After the last game (in which Dwarfs blew up a dungeon bridge, stopping the Chaos Dwarfs from using an abandoned dwarf hold to attack further dwarven targets more easily)...we fast forward a few days to the handful of dwarfs who were cut off inside the dwarf hold (now occupied by Night Goblins). The rest of the dwarfs have been killed in endless fighting with hordes of Night Goblins and Sneaky Gitz over the past few days.
Basic gist:
-Dwarf force consists of seven dwarf heroes (3x elite, 4x veteran)
-Night Goblins and Sneaky Gitz (and some heroes) are generated using a random table, one unit per turn - arriving at a random door (5 on the map)
-There are four scattered rune shards. If they dwarfs get three, they can decipher which random door leads to the surface - they must then escape from the dungeon through the door.
-There are five doors, rolling a D6...if a player rolls a '6' they may choose a door.
Result:
-3/7 dwarf heroes survived, managing to escape through the door after they successfully acquired three of the four rune shards.
-Mr. Crowley the dwarf hermit mage who'd been leading these dwarfs was slain(?) by many Night Goblin arrows after a fight with a night goblin shaman. So he'll be removed from the narrative for a while, if not permanently(?).
-Really fun little game, lots of twists and turns, and bizarre that this "rank-n-flank" game works well with this kind of hero-heavy skirmish.

That looks like a really fun scenario- and the big dungeon set up looks great! Do you recall what manufacturers make your dwarf heroes? Particularly the big spear & beard guy on the bridge- nice classic look to him. Beautiful stuff!

Sadly, several of them are Black Tree Designs...so...pursue at your own risk (and yes, when I ordered them my order took six months, arrived wrong...and they never responded to emails).
They're one of the great travesties in the wargaming space. If only they could sell their molds to someone who has decent/mature business practices. :'(
