Now that the Hornblower 15mm range has been gaining some speed with releases, I thought it would be good to paint up the models and do some running commentary on the WIP's.
This weekend I finally had some time to paint up the first Shield Maiden Cavalry model.
Thinking of basing them 3 to 40mm x 60mm base, with 3 bases a unit for 120mm frontage ;-)
-
Beautiful, I like your painting style and the palette you chose!! I’m loving this range of figures, they pack a lot of character into a small package.
-
Thank you, glad you like them!
-
Managed two more Cavalry yesterday... and a test base!
-
They look great. Such crisp miniature and painting to match.
-
That is great painting on those fantastic miniatures.
-
Thanks guys! I'm happy with how these are coming along!
Should have a few more ready this evening ;-)
-
Managed to finish 3 bases of Riders!
2 for Midgard, 3 for Hailcaesar or bigboy Midgard ;-)
Now onto basing!
-
They look excellent, I love them! Great choice of colours.
-
Great painting, could pass for 28mm!
-
Thank you!
Working on basing and some Bow Cav this week
-
Really, really nice looking- great job!
-
Thanks!
-
You’ve really knocked it out of the park with these well done.
-
Thankyou!
I'll have to post up the final images this week
I got some work done on the "savages".
-
Slowly populating these bases with Icetribe + Savages...
The giant command stand is inspired by MikeyG! His project is amazing :-)
-
Looking really good. Your colour palette for these is fantastic: muted, but still varied and interesting.
-
Thankyou! I'm using a few of the ww2 colours to some good effect, once you mix in buff or white you get some pretty natural muted tones.
So far: Vallejo English Uniform (yellowy-brown) and AK Dunkelgelb 1944 (greyish green) highlighted with Buff and Ivory.
-
Those look great what miniature range are they from?
-
They’re from the range Maceface sculpts, and which are sold as Hornblower Miniatures. You can buy them from Northstar Military Figures.

As I was typing, the question was answered. Maceface Minis really is a blessing! The models are just so good!
-
After seeing g those shieldmaidens I keep hearing "Ride of the Valkaries" playing in my head.
Really nice job!!!!!

Thankyou, as the others have kindly said, the Shieldmaidens and Savage Command stand are part of the Hornblower range. The multibased unit is made up of a mix of Hornblower and Barbarica figures;-)

Thankyou! Funny you mention Valkyries... they might indeed ride in soon....
-
Not heaaaps of progress on the Savages as I'm waiting for the next releases to bolster those stands...
But have started work on some Barbarian Norse bits. That army will be a big mix of copplestone and Hornblower bits.
-
Just amazing work at such a small scale! Great job, thanks for posting!
-
Those are excellent! I thoroughly enjoy the Copplestone and Hornblower figures I have picked up. I haven’t mixed any on a base yet, though, so it’s cool to see how that will work (perfectly, by the look of it!)
-
Lovely painting!

I'm trying to make sure the models share some sort of gear/accessories or materials to help bridge the gap between the sculpts buuuut working on some Male norse that will sit somewhere between the shieldmaidens and Copple barbs.
Most likely tunics and chainmail as to not double up heaps. I think the mix of many packs will look great in the end. Copples beefy champions are really great and add some body shape variation.
Also doing some half-giant packs that will act as Ogres (aprox 23-25mm tall). I feel these small figures need some height variance in the units to give a good look on the battlefield.
-
Well colour me interested, those sound like great additions to the line! I look forward to seeing them (and being able to buy some).
-
We've got a big batch of new stuff coming out this month too, so lots of potential for your armies :-)
-
Hi Maceface. Firstly, congratulations on a fantastic range. I've been plugging away at some 18mm historicals (Wiglafs) and have fallen in love with this scale. If I could just finish the projects that are already in progress I would be all over this...
Secondly, if I keep seeing yours and Pattus' 18mm armies I'm not sure how long I'll be able to hold out. Your units look sick. There's lots of inspiration and eye candy here.
Following your progress with great interest.
Cheers
-
They're excellent figs, and really well painted. Top drawer.
-
That ‘big batch’ sounds very promising! I think I’ll be spending some more on those when they’re released.

Thankyou! It's getting close to one year of the Hornblower range, so will be exploring more factions to fill out the "setting".
Are you keeping that project fully historical? I've got some bog-body style undead coming out this month, that could fit against Anglo-Saxons for sure!

I'm looking forward to seeing these: a fantasy Norse army has definitely been on my list of projects to do. Will they resemble your 3d print designs?
-
I would sayyyy same idea for the Half-giants but done in the style of Barbarica/Hornblower and no chaos symbols ;-)
-
Well, I'm eager to see how they turn out.
-
lovely tones on those...
-
Finally completed the LVL 3 Savage command for Midgard, and have quite a few new packs on the painting table now.
-
damn nice
-
Yes indeed, that is a beautiful character stand! I love the colours and the subtle gradients.
-
Thankyou guys!
Next up in the painting queue are more Savages, and some yet to be released Valkyrie Cavalry!
The elite "huscarl" style unit for the Shieldmaidens (or broader Norse Barbarians). The foot unit has 2 handed weapons, where the cavalry use hunting spears (they could be elite monster hunters...).
The Cavalry are one piece castings that have allowed me to play around with the dynamism in the hair/braids, flowing cloaks, aggressive lance poses and winged helmets!
A sample before the colours get chucked on...
-
Beautiful miniatures!
-
Superb figures!
-
Wow, just wow. Immediately started playing the ride of the valkyries in my head at full volume! lol
Once again, great figures Maceface.
-
Those are lovely! I’ll probably end up using them as commanders or heroes rather than supernatural Valkyries (although maybe those would overlap in some settings…). They will find a role in my collection one way or another, anyway!
-
Had the same idea myself, a Knightly/Military Order for use with the lovely Shield Maiden figures from the same manufacturer.
Amazon Warriors with a difference.
-
Absolutely, I modelled these to represent a more grounded elite / zealous unit rather than actually Supernatural/angelic.
Maybe the Valkyrie name is a romantic title for the Shieldmaiden's heaviest female Warriors etc.
There will be a command set later on which has Leaders and shaman/seer type character for completion sake.
-
These are a truly amazing set of miniatures.
-
Thankyou!
-
Managed a few more "Savages"...
The eagle-eyed hunters among you will notice that these are new sculpts, including some female hand weapons!
-
Very nice.
-
Beautiful sculpts, and beautiful painting. Well done! 8)
-
Yup, those are sweet! As I said before, I really like the subtle shading on their clothes.
-
Perfect Late Bronze Age barbarians! Superb! :-*
-
Lovely painting on these
-
Thankyou!
Using a wet pallate, I'm going from English Uniform up to Off-white, mixing in more as I go.
Then using a brown wash (with matt varnish mixed in) only in the recesses or where I need contrast between the clothes/ accessories.
