so with plenty of trailers out now and a summer release, thoughts on Alien Earth?
Alien Romulus surpassed expectations (although I recently saw a video that explained the offspring originally shed it's "human" appearance and became full xeno, which would have helped remove David creating them a lot more for me), certainly I'm sure the 3D printer chaps will have plenty of soldier types to do...
-
Unfortunately that's a fan-made trailer :( While it looks good, there's no reason to expect the real thing will be anything like it.
I gave up on the Alien franchise at some point, but the ones they're nicking clips from look okay, so I'll maybe track them down.

I hope for the best! (Science) Fiction gets really important now as reality is becoming increasingly disappointing to me...

oops... I'm at work, so couldn't actually watch it to check... lol
there's been a recent viral bit of the ships cat with camera on it's collar wandering around the ship that crashes with the xenos on board and then the trailer proper which shows the soldier types in Thailand.
EDIT - actual trailers from FX official youtube channel now added to the original post instead of the fan nonsense...
-
The official one is out there, at least the one showing with the show on Disney+
The fan made one is better lol

This is due on August 13. I'm not completely sure if it's a film or a series... No new trailers yet :(
-
According to next week's TV listings magazine, it's an 8 part series with a new episode dropping every Wednesday, starting 13th August (ie next Wednesday)
Fingers crossed, cause I don't feel I'm getting value for money from my Disney+ sub at the moment :(
-
So first two episodes dropped… it’s decent enough, the timeline is very tight for a 65 year mission to return in 2120 means launching in 2055. The other specimens are interesting but not the focal point. I’d have liked to get to know the Maginot crew a bit more, there was some interesting dynamics there, and I love seeing Tyres in stuff.
Hope it has a set resolution and doesn’t do the usual US tv thing and keep stretching it out.
-
Saw the first episode, and I loved the aesthetics. The eighties retro tech fit perfectly with the original films, as did the crew of the Maginot.
+++SPOILER+++ Considering the exposure and dynamics of the maginot crew, I'm sure we'll see more of them at a later date. Possibly through flashbacks, or maybe through some additional survivors; we didn't see all of them die after all...
The episode had quite a bit of pacing too; series can usually take their time building up background and suspense, but here it all felt a bit rushed, as if they had to cram everything they wanted to tell into one feature film.
For instance, the way the ship retund to earth; there was absolutely nobody monitoring the thing? No radar/lidar/IR/optical early warning systems? No intercept after not identifying and/or communicating? Just straight from the outer solar system, smack down into a metropolis? They could have built loads of extra suspense that way.
Also, the way the S&R team entered the crash site was rather odd: A huge space craft crashes into a residential skyscraper (or two?), they immediately respond (good, but without any communication with their command structure?) and then exit their APC's going full tactical with raised barrels as if entering a warzone (bad/odd, as this was (at that time) purely a rescue mission involving civilians).
It made more sense when entering the ship though, as they did not know its contents or the reason for the crash. And obviously that turned out to be smart. There were also allusions to salvage rights, so perhaps securing such a prize was regularly accomplished through violence? The S&R team did make me think of the emergency responders in Cyberpunk 2077; there to help, but only the client, and ready to gun down anyone standing between them and their objective (but then mixed in with a Colonial Marine feel as well).
I'll be watching the second episode probably tonight; it was interesting enough to draw me back in at least... :)
-
Yeah, the guns out first responders was weird.
The xeno being a complete whirlwind of death doesn’t seem right. Yes, it’s capable, but this one is going absolutely apeshit. The big chap prowled and hunted, like an animal. It’s collecting biomatter for egg metamorphosis, but it’s measured. It may be deadly, but it has purpose and in Aliens they worked to the benefit of the hive. This one is just killing everything it sees.
-
I watched the first episode last night and thought it was very good, even if it was not what I was suspecting :)
-
First two episodes were a lot of fun - strong retro vibe which nails the aesthetic of the original movie.
-
Holy crap, the henchman with the Boy Cavalier is Adrian Edmondson! It was niggling how familiar he looked.

Eddie. Eddie! There's somebody in the house! EDDIE!! :D
-
I watched the first 2 episodes. I'm optimistic but not completely sold yet. It wasn't bad though, so that is promising. Will definitely be watching to see where it goes.
-
After two episode it seem to be the missing link between Bladerunner and Aliens. Great to watch, full of ideas for gaming. Great fun, looking forward to 3-8

That threw me as well ! Lol
-
I have to admit that I did not enjoy the first episode and almost gave up after 20 or 30 minutes :(
+++ SPOILERS AHEAD +++
My main issues with it:
- it was set 100 years in the future and 40 years in the past, which clashed badly for me
- Waking up out of hibernation, your first thought is "cigarette" ::) And, in 100 years, they haven't perfected the vape, so cigarette smoke is still a thing?
- New Horizons left the Earth doing 52,000 mph (give or take) and took 2 years (24 months) to reach Saturn. That ship supposedly did it in 3 months, so approximately 8x the speed - and that's without the fact it should have been decelerating at some point. That means when it ploughed through the atmosphere at maybe 400,000 mph, it should have been a fireball that levelled the city and vapourised, rather than nudging against a couple of towers with its engine still firing (so still accelerating) and most of its specimen cases intact
- The kidult actors who had been to Haribo acting school are now suddenly superheroes who just magically know stuff (I haven't seen episode 2, so maybe they'll make sense)
I know it's niggles, but when something starts with such nonsense, it doesn't bode well.
I wasn't expecting a huge amount, but this was so much worse than anything I'd considered. I may watch episode 2, but it's touch-and-go just now :(

After seeing the damage cause by passenger planes in NYC on 9/11, the spaceship crash really feels underwhelming. Barely any fire, the rescue team arrives in t-shirts.
Maybe in the future, ships will be catastrophe proof or something...

I suppose it depends on the fuel source. Jet fuel is insanely dangerous.

Which reminds me, how strong are guillotines in 22nd century?
-
Is that a cuddly toy at her belt?
Synthetics aren't what they used to be! lol
-
At least someone got on the mini train right away! lol
-
Is that a cuddly toy at her belt?
I was going to ask that.
-
I was going to ask that.
I've not seen the series (yet - may later) but had to look it up. She's a hybrid; human consciousness transferred into a synthetic body - in her case when she was only 11 which may explain the cuddly toy! lol
-
Yeah, she's a kid in the synth body. The weapon she's carrying is a guillotine blade she tore off one of the old fashioned paper guillotines.
I gave up after one episode, so I have no idea how it fares against an alien
-
I’m enjoying it overall. Really builds on the films, timeline hiccup aside.
-
I was going to ask that.
It certainly is.

You do see her pick it up and clip it on in episode 1 when she breaks off the guillotine blade.
-

It's quite a low key moment. Overtaken by the guillotine blade magnetically snapping against her back.
The child-minds inside the young adult bodies is an interesting take: the contrast of intelligence and physical capability played against naivety and wonderment. Of all the hybrid synths, Wendy (as befits the Peter Pan backdrop) is the most sensible, the closest to an adult. I'm enjoying the series.
-
It's starting to pick up for sure (i've just watched ep.4), and the different issues thrust on each of the kids/hybrids are compelling.
Also: octopus-eye monster is scary as F...
-

yeah, seen some interesting theories on that and Nibs reaction...
-
Definitely something going on there...
Also; I was pleasantly surprised in realising that this is a series for which I'm actually looking forward to the next episode :)
-
same... it's obviously going to end with Ms Yutani saying something like - "do we have any ships in that area?"
it's the only real reason for this to be pre-Alien.
-
Yes, with the option of Aliens: Earth Hive to still exist after the events of Alien & Aliens (as long as we do not mention Alien 3 ever again ;) )
-
I really like Alien 3. It's better with the extended cut. And thankfully Resurrection is so far in the future it doesn't count.

Totally agree.
A3 has a completely different atmosphere to A1 and A2, but for me it's a worthwhile addition to the story line.
-
I like it too, but as a separate entity. I read the Earth Hive comics before I saw the movie, so in my head-canon, the film never quite meshed. But I do agree that is is a good movie...
-
oh yeah, I read them as well (although the art got really lazy as the series progressed), but comic stories are never cannon really... being a Doctor Who fan teaches you that.
-
Yes, comics storylines are weird that way. I remember being immensely confused after reading some Transformers comics back in the day (early eighties) when I was going super hard on the animated series (G1). The comics presented a completely divergent timeline and I had no clue what to make of it.
Only later did I understand how that happened. And the same went for MASK, MotU and GI-Joe (basically all my childhood animated series ;) )
But this phenomenon was never confined to comics; the same thing happened to novels as well.
First one coming to mind is Splinter of the Mind's Eye. At the time published as the official continuation of the Star Wars storyline after the release of the first film (later dubbed A New Hope), before The Empire Strikes Back was even an idea. It was later even retconned away completely.

I wonder if I still have a copy in the loft?
For those of you who are too young to have read it, due to the changes in the plot direction (and parentage) it has a very high Game of Thrones style squick factor.
-
well, ep. 5 certainly scratched my "I want to see more of the Maginot crew" itch...
the Eye is certainly MVP on this show... but we appear to have, despite the distance, instant interstellar communication, despite Hadley's Hope waiting weeks for a response in 60 years time.
-
Scratch that up to cost and availability of tech.
I can WhatsApp my friends, or write them a letter: Same information transfer, but the one requires a pen, some paper and a stamp, the other hundreds of euros/pounds/dollars worth of phone and data.
At least; that's how you could explain that away in-universe. But I recognise the discrepancy there...
-
it could just refer to the bureaucracy of Wey-Yu, Romulus showed how bogged down by red tape it was, but it did stick out a bit to me...
