While I am not too familiar with Lovecraft and the Cthulu mythos I am aware of a few things. One of which is the location of many of his stories, Arkham, Mass.
Has anyone built an Asylum yet or perhaps some buildings from Miskatonic University? After all Herbert needs a lab.
-
I've seen some great Innsmouth terrain here on the forum. Don't think I've ever seen a Miskatonic University or Arkham Asylum though. There's a Scenes of Horror thread in the Strange Aeons board that has some nice terrain which is worth a look. Are you planning on a large terrain project?
-
Been planning on making a modular Arkham/Innsmouth...got a few buildings on the go but to do it "the right way" is going to take some work... :(
In the distant future I may have one built... :?
'till then check out the fantastic Innsmouth board done by Grimm...it's around here someplace. Especially love the Devils Reef!
And while we are on the topic, who makes good scale 1920's buildings?

I'm not sure who the manufacturer is, but I've had my eye on these for some time:

I tried to build some cork terrain a la the city found on Matakishi's Tea House, but only succeeded in making a solemn vow to never again attempt to use cork to make buildings. :-I

Remember this humongous board by Gregory Privat?

If you're interested in paper buildings, here's a take on Arkham Sanitarium using a paper Victorian mansion kit:
http://www.tin-soldier.com/vicmansion1.htm (http://www.tin-soldier.com/vicmansion1.htm)
While not specifically Arkham Sanitarium, there was a nice asylum setup in a couple of threads by Grimm in the "Other Adventures" section ("Horror at the Asylum" was the title, I think) - but I seem to recall the images weren't displaying the last time I looked. :(
-
Grimm's and Gregory Privat's Innsmouth layouts are amazing, well worth hunting pics down on LAF for inspiration. I seem to remember Grimm saying he got most of his inspiration from a Cthulhu computer game.

I don't want to do anything too large to start off, this will be my first serious attempt at any sort of terrain. I have had the luck to spend countless weekends documenting many of the abandoned psychiatric centers in the American northeast, Danvers having been one of them (the real life Arkham Asylum). So I may start off with an interior, maybe a few floors that can be laid out next to each other. I will pop over to the "Scenese of Horror" thread in Strange Aeons though, thank you.
The Innsmouth terrain on this board is simply amazing though.

I found the threads, looks like the images in the first thread are working but those in the second are not:

The second thread had better views of the asylum set-up. Fortunately, I saved all of these - hope Grimm doesn't mind if I re-post a few:

These shots (and all the others from that thread) are just too cool to be lost forever to the aether...

I agree, seeing those pics again is refreshing.
-
I highly recommend reading through "The Shadow over Innsmouth" to get a real feel for what Innsmouth should look like. Lovecraft went above and beyond in his descriptive prose of this blighted town.
-
I have the Whipstaff Manor toy from the Casper the Ghost movie. It is in about 28mm scale. A great Gothic Mansion/Asylum.
-
Thought I'd share some of my scenery I put together for my Strange Aeons Cthulhu gaming.
All these pieces were made on CD's in the past few weeks and many of them were directly inspired by others who were kind enough to post their pics online.

In the past, I made many larger building and pieces of scenery which I've had to discard due to a general lack of space. Something I've really regretted. I really enjoyed making the smaller CD sized pieces for storage, interchangable terrain options and for use in Scenes of Horror Rules. I took these pictures rather quickly.
I need to made some Jungle Terrain eventually but I'm going to focus back on some miniatures for the present.
Two other pics I included are my Scupty Clay "Shoggoth and Swamp Monster" they are only primed at present but I am very pleased with how they turned out. I also took a number of unarmed RAFM Call of Cthulhu Adventurers and added pistol holsters to their belts. Since I will be using them for Strange Aeons, it was the simplist way to arm them, I think the belt pistol holsters turned out very nice too.

nice scenery,
i particularly like the small church with the cthulhu stained glass window,
a branch of the church of starry eisdom no doubt?
excellent work
regards

Cool stuff! Love the 'skinning station' and evil church! Could make a good 'Innsmouth' with that lot...plenty of freaky stuff. :-*

I think I recognize your inspiration for a few of these! I'll have more CD terrain done in a week or two for more inspiration, no worries! ;)

Have you photoshopped over the blood blotches on the back wall of this shelter for some reason? Bad Symbols for LAF? The tan blotches look odd.
Aside from that, great set of scenery CDs. I have plans for a decrepit farmhouse and small church, going to tuck your photos away for further inspiration!

I think the skin shack looks better in person. The original photos were taken with a flash. I'm not too good at taking pictures. It's amazing how different a flash will change an image.
The skin is much darker in appearance and I love the look of the blood and knives on the table.

I also wanted to make some flying insect swarms too to go with the Strange Aeons expansion supplement. So I made these 4 flying swarms out of scupty and wire to represent swarms of locusts , flys or killer bees. I'm not sure how satisfied I am with them but they will do the job.
Here are some other objective markers I threw together included. Again the torn and blooded torso didn't photograph well (like the skin shack) but you get the idea.

Great stuff gauntman!! Lots of very nice scratch-building in display :)

Here are two other small but simple pieces still in their early stages.
A path between two large stones and a hillside cave.
Nothing but white glue, spackle, a cut up piece of foam and sand at their point.
-
There are a lot of great pieces here, then again I should have expected that when I made the thread.
-
sorry for OT - it's not about Arkham but you might find it worthy considering:
some CoC adventures were placed in desert (like "steel angels*" from "terryfing adventures*" expansion) - you could make pretty flat, sandy game table with some dunes, some military or archeological tents etc;
lots of space to drive armored car and gun-down dark youngs and mi-gos ;D
*I hope it's proper original name - I translated polish versions
-
Oh yeah, sorry you were asking about Arkham type terrain... I got off track....

Haha, that's ok. I'm sure there is a cave somewhere in Arkham.

Do you have pics of this? I have never seen/heard of this toy. Couldn't find it on evilbay either.

+1 I'm intrigued, but my search-fu has failed me.

@gauntman
I'm just putting together some bits and pieces for Strange Aeons and you've given me plenty of inspiration here for some new terrain - Brilliant! . Love the skinning station, in all it's gory glory, and the mound with the mysterious door to who knows where. Might have to pinch that idea >:D
What did you use for the water in your swampy pond? I've tried using Woodlands Scenics Realistic Water but it shrinks so much when it's drying that I couldn't get a decent result with it.
@Doomsdave & JMGraham
I've been furiously hunting for the elusive Whipstaff Manor too. All I can find is this one (scroll down):

Here is one piece of terrain i built for A Cthulhu game :)

My creepy hillside door was inspired from the Lovecraft movie "The Ressurrected" one of the few good lovecraft films which is a retelling of The Charles Dexter Ward Story". In the movie and story, there are mention of a hillside entrance to the ancient dungeons where Joseph Curwen creates conducts his necromantic experiments.
---------------------
As far as the pond goes. I used "Woodland Scenics Water" I really struggled with it the 1st couple projects I used it for but now that I understand how it behaves...I can use it better.
Step by step....
1. Create the rim using silicone calking, greenstuff, hotglue or whatever. I love the silicone calk.
2. waterproof the CD hole...I white glue a tiny piece of aluminum foil inside to cover and waterproof the hole.
3. Place stumps, roots and trees in or around the water. Prime and paint the stumps.
4. Give the basin a very thin texture coat of sand with white glue and paint, you want the center dark or black with the outer edges muddy colored.
5. Pour a very thin layer of water scenics. Add swirles of green with toothpick into the water to form algee or layers of muck and underwater vegitation.
6. Each layer takes about a 24 hours to set. Add 2-3 layers adding varied toothpick swirls and dabs of varied green colors with each. You must keep the layers very thin and allow them time to dry before adding more. You also need to make sure the rim of the swamp is high enough to allow for three or four layers of the water effects.
7. Add foliage, grass and moss.
The difference between making a swamp and a pond are the tree stumps and the impassable vile water. A swamp has stumps and trees coming out of the water.
I'm actually working on 2 more swamp CD pieces. Here is an outstanding tutorial link that should really inspire you all.

I thought that might be the case when I first saw that piece. Excellent bit of terrain! (One which I will of course have to lift for my own games!)
That scene in the film with the flooding river and "the abominations" washing ashore was one of the best in the movie - second only to the filmed-by-failing-flashlight exploration of Curwen's underground complex, IMHO. I'm thinking that a terrain piece like the hillside door would make a great entrance for a series of tunnels and rooms (possibly represented by Dwarven Forge pieces). Add in a few house rules for failing light sources and random pits/wandering abominations, and oohhh... I think I'm getting an idea for my next game. >:D

Here are my 2 simple swamp CD's.

It's almost ready to prime but I wanted to put a tiny mud island in each of the marsh areas to place some plants on and I need to texture the basin with sand.
The tiny brown aluminum pieces are white glued to the bottom. They were Dove Chocolate wrappers. :P

I bought this house from Perry Miniatures for my LotOW table, but I think it would work well, given a different, more run down, paint scheme, for Innsmouth. ALso remainds me of the HPL story with the old cannible living in a remote part of rural new england (I forget what it was called)

Nice, you're right that has a really creepy rural look to it.
-
The picture in the house was the name of the story.
Nice house.
-
The Plasticville line has some cool stuff. I've got the 'Hobo Village' set...pretty cool rundown buildings.
-
nice again!!!
btw - what "cthulhu-games" do you play? I mean Strange Aeons - that's obvious, minis can also be used to illustrate some action in rpg but what else?
-
The "Grannies Cabin" from the Miniature Building Authority, would be suitably Creepy rural looking too. http://www.miniaturebuildingauthority.com/proddetail.asp?prod=10804 (http://www.miniaturebuildingauthority.com/proddetail.asp?prod=10804)
-
I'm really going to have to take a shot at these CD bases for exterior terrain. It's a great idea and now I'll have a use for all those horribly beat up CDs from my teenage years.
-
Ouch....
That Grannies Cabin looks nice but it's almost $50.oo US!
I don't know if I could spend that much on a single house. Wheew!
