Arkham Terrain, What have you built???
« on: 19 February 2010, 02:12:54 PM »
While I am not too familiar with Lovecraft and the Cthulu mythos I am aware of a few things. One of which is the location of many of his stories, Arkham, Mass.

Has anyone built an Asylum yet or perhaps some buildings from Miskatonic University? After all Herbert needs a lab.

I've seen some great Innsmouth terrain here on the forum. Don't think I've ever seen a Miskatonic University or Arkham Asylum though. There's a Scenes of Horror thread in the Strange Aeons board that has some nice  terrain which is worth a look. Are you planning on a large terrain project?

Been planning on making a modular Arkham/Innsmouth...got a few buildings on the go but to do it "the right way" is going to take some work... :(

In the distant future I may have one built... :?

'till then check out the fantastic Innsmouth board done by Grimm...it's around here someplace. Especially love the Devils Reef!

And while we are on the topic, who makes good scale 1920's buildings?

I'm not sure who the manufacturer is, but I've had my eye on these for some time:

I tried to build some cork terrain a la the city found on Matakishi's Tea House, but only succeeded in making a solemn vow to never again attempt to use cork to make buildings.   :-I

Remember this humongous board by Gregory Privat?

If you're interested in paper buildings, here's a take on Arkham Sanitarium using a paper Victorian mansion kit:

While not specifically Arkham Sanitarium, there was a nice asylum setup in a couple of threads by Grimm in the "Other Adventures" section ("Horror at the Asylum" was the title, I think) - but I seem to recall the images weren't displaying the last time I looked.  :(

Grimm's and Gregory Privat's Innsmouth layouts are amazing, well worth hunting pics down on LAF for inspiration. I seem to remember Grimm saying he got most of his inspiration from a Cthulhu computer game.

I don't want to do anything too large to start off, this will be my first serious attempt at any sort of terrain. I have had the luck to spend countless weekends documenting many of the abandoned psychiatric centers in the American northeast, Danvers having been one of them (the real life Arkham Asylum). So I may start off with an interior, maybe a few floors that can be laid out next to each other. I will pop over to the "Scenese of Horror" thread in Strange Aeons though, thank you.

The Innsmouth terrain on this board is simply amazing though.

I found the threads, looks like the images in the first thread are working but those in the second are not:

The second thread had better views of the asylum set-up. Fortunately, I saved all of these - hope Grimm doesn't mind if I re-post a few:

These shots (and all the others from that thread) are just too cool to be lost forever to the aether...

I agree, seeing those pics again is refreshing.

I highly recommend reading through "The Shadow over Innsmouth" to get a real feel for what Innsmouth should look like. Lovecraft went above and beyond in his descriptive prose of this blighted town.

I have the Whipstaff Manor toy from the Casper the Ghost movie. It is in about 28mm scale. A great Gothic Mansion/Asylum.

Thought I'd share some of my scenery I put together for my Strange Aeons Cthulhu gaming.

All these pieces were made on CD's in the past few weeks and many of them were directly inspired by others who were kind enough to post their pics online.

In the past, I made many larger building and pieces of scenery which I've had to discard due to a general lack of space.  Something I've really regretted.  I really enjoyed making the smaller CD sized pieces for storage, interchangable terrain options and for use in Scenes of Horror Rules.  I took these pictures rather quickly.

I need to made some Jungle Terrain eventually but I'm going to focus back on some miniatures for the present.

Two other pics I included are my Scupty Clay "Shoggoth and Swamp Monster" they are only primed at present but I am very pleased with how they turned out.  I also took a number of unarmed RAFM Call of Cthulhu Adventurers and added pistol holsters to their belts.  Since I will be using them for Strange Aeons, it was the simplist way to arm them, I think the belt pistol holsters turned out very nice too.
