Title: Gaslight rules
Post by: Axebreaker on March 09, 2010, 12:18:52 PM
Can Gaslight rules be played by itself or do you need additional supplements in order to play?Any advice would be appreciated. :)

Cheers

Gaslight is a stand alone game for skirmishes.
Battles by Gaslight is an add on book for playing larger games.
Adventures and Expeditions is an add on book that adds RPG elements.
To Be Continued.... by Gaslight is an add on that plays in the style of Pulp serials.
Adventures of Victoria Hawkes is a scenario book.

You need the Gaslight book to use any of the others.

There is a collected compendium in the works but one of the writers keeps being sent to Iraq so it keeps getting delayed.

You'll also find that the Yahoo group has additional rules and info as well.  like using Flyer's and so forth..

Does the Gaslight rules range all the way into Martian adventures or is it limited to activities on Earth and Atlantis?

It doesn't give rules/stats specific to either, you create the units you want from within it's guidelines. We've played games on Mars, Venus, on Earth etc doesn't matter.

What are the GASLIGHT base mechanics and statcards like?
Title: Re: Gaslight rules

What are the GASLIGHT base mechanics and statcards like?

Im new to the rules but briefly

Units individually perform actions in randomly generated order each turn , move or fire. Success in combat and morale governed by beating a dice throw from your units stats.

Main characters have 3 stats fire, scuffle and save. Extras have just 2, fire and scufffle and tend to die in droves. Conveyances also have stats- start, sustain, speed  for movement and weapon stats.

Thinks thats the gist of it from memory.

Has anyone seen any adaptions for solo play?

Okay odd question does SRM only effect when your shooting at vehicles etc rather than shooting at people??

Smart it makes a lot more sense now then :D

Nice rules they could just do with a huge re-write and some better examples for me..

Not that it'll stop me i hasten to add :D

Yeah, hopefully the compendium when it comes out will read better. The shotgun rules in standard gaslight confused the hell out of me for quite a while. Working out who got hit took me a while to get straight in my head.

I'm with you on that one. The first time I played the rules I got it wrong and it was carnage!

Yeah they do have a very odd way of explaining things but its one of those sets that once you get it you go oh right...

Gaslight is very adaptible to house rules and combinations with other sets of rules.  I use Gaslight combat rules with Space 1889 characters and it works well.  If you want to stay strickly with Gaslight the site below will give lots of ideas:

I have Gaslight and Battles by Gaslight. I have only played Battles by Gaslight as we prefer larger battles and had heaps of stuff ready when we got the rules.

Gaslight lets you create all manner of vehicles units, creatures etc.
We had a arms race as we got carried away scratch building leviathans and flyers. I prefer creating my own VSF world but other people prefer systems like Valor Steel and Flesh where there is a ready made back story to the game.

Gaslight can be a bit of a muddle at first. Some of the mechanics are unfamiliar e.g rolling d20s instead of d6 or d10 and rolling low is better than rolling high. The rules could be set out better but most issues are resolved by using a rule sumary sheet with the important tables. The Gaslight Yahoo group has summary sheets you can download.

The forthcoming Compendium rules will bring all the books together in one volume and will include more rules for aerials and large aeronef style battles. Hopefully the rules will get a good once over and get set out better with an index to aid finding things.

Battles by Gaslight is a quicker game as casualty removal and vehicle damage are simplified. One house rule we employ is allowing a unit to both shoot and move in a turn.

This speeds up the game and make it less defensive.

Cheers

Fuzzy

Yeah, I have similar experiences with some of Alternative's games. It would make perfect sense if spoken to you by the writer, but in written form it can be hard to comprehend.

I just got GASLIGHT in the post and it looks alright, gotta read it properly yet though!  :)

Valor Steel and Flesh

I have both Gaslight (Core and Battles) and VS&F. The fluff can be ignored, both systems have good, solid core rules.  Having played both I'm leaning a little towards VS&F at the moment, though I do like the additional hit points idea from To Be Continued.

I recognise that site!  :o
Its one I wrote up the other year, then lost interest in VSF and drifted away from. o_o
With my resurging interest in VSF due to the Atlantis campaign, I really ought to see about resurrecting it (or atleast finishing it off/neating it up)....

Yes you should - especially as you have new photos.  ;)

Not sure if I should thank you about the link to Crowfeathers though - I find myself thinking about repurposing my Artizan/Dixon cowboys and VSF for Deadlands. Of course this means I'll have to buy a few ACW troops and some indians.  :D

Ah, Crowfeathers - it did EXACTLY the same thing to me! You know I'm pretty much ready to roll with any old west/deadlands type project , so if you don't resist, atleast you'll have someone to play against!

The compedium has been delayed due to one of the authors being shipped to Iraq for 6 months. Probably the end of the year is the most likely release date.

Ebay dear boy. Ebay.  ;)
I have just had a reply from Chiltern that they don’t have the books in stock and as the company is slimming down he is not going to stock them any more. :'(
I am now going to try the Keep to see if I have any better luck.
Not having much luck getting stuff by mail order at the moment. I have had two lots of stuff from ebay not arrive. :'(
The first lot wouldn’t even reply to my emails but after a couple of weeks just gave me a refund with no explanation. I guess I must have got to good a deal on the item and they didn’t want to send it.
The second lot are still arguing the case after a month and a half. After a month during which emails when back and forward with them saying I should be patient. They then said that they would go to the post office to get a refund but I would not get all my money back or they would send through proof of postage and I could go my self to the post office. When I said send me proof of postage they stopped answering my emails.
I waited about another week then opened a case with ebay and gave them negative feedback. Suddenly they are back saying that I have never replied to them. Even though I used the message system on ebay, which still has copies of all my messages. He then hit me with another excuse that he gets too many messages in a day and that there are four other people looking at them as well so he might not have seen them. The latest is that he will send proof of postage or give me my money back.
I have asked for my money back! So I have a funny feeling I may not hear much from him again.
Sorry for hijacking the thread but I thought people might like to know.
Do not buy from "dmrp4" on ebay
Anyway wish me luck with the Keep.

With the Keep your better off phoning them to be honest as they ahve so much stuff i doubt they know what they have in stock :D

The shop isn't far from me and every time i visit its so much fun asking for stuff and watching them go through dusty boxes looking for what your after :D

Is the Keep still open as a shop? I popped in some time ago and was told they were closing the shop to concentrate on interweb sales. It would be a shame if it were closed, such a fun place to browse, never knowing if some 15mm Peter Laing figures would ambush you!

And yes i always love walking through the small pile of boxes to find the one safe ish spot in the shop :D

I had fun and games trying to get my copy and in the end ordered direct from the US. There's plenty of the supplements around (I got mine from Spirit Games, £5 a book cheaper than Caliver!!).

I'm having the same problem as you getting hold of a copy of V&S&F in the UK. I've been let down twice so looks like I'll get a copy shipped over from the US. Fancy sharing the shipping?  ;)

I've just updated the GASLIGHT playsheets for we used for the BLAM games to incorporate primative weapons and all standard artillery options, as well as to add a note on heroes. I will email copies out to everyone I've previously sent them to over the next few days.

If anyone else wants copies of the playsheets please drop me a PM with your email address.
