interesting
what use has the honourable Mr, T.H. for the Sydney Opera house? ;)
-
Interesting.
I look forward to seeing how it comes out. :)
-
Trust me, it's going to be good! Svennn is quite the genius when he wants to be.
former user, if its going to be a VSF opera house we'd best get some rivets on it! ;)
-
I said interesting, not unconvincing ;)
rivets....
yeah right o_o
did one of You VSF loonies notice that electric arc welding was introduced in 1882? ;)
-
Well, you need some method of holding the rivets in place, don't you?
-
I am guessing a Natalius ???
-
Svennn is quite the genius when he wants to be.
I wouldnt go quite so far as to say that. ::)
I don' think its a Nautilus, and certainly not a hacienda... ;)
-
yeah right, @Svenn likes picture guessing, I forgot ;)
OK:
Gigantic cream cake?
-
I wanna say something Atlantean? Perhaps even from the film?
We shall see. :)
-
This is obviously the Giant Segmented House of Earthly Pleasures and Tea Shop!
-
It's a crushed, sliced and crustless loaf. lol
-
Very intriguing! Complicated looking shapes there - I presume it is card stuck together rather than carved from polystyrene etc?
I particularly like the 2nd and 3rd pics, some interesting views ;)
lol

lol
Aren't there just? ::)
-
Is that the way up it's going to be, or has it been layed down to throw us off the scent? Flip it by 90 degrees and it would look like the prow of some sort of icebreaking vehicle?
-
I only managed to do a bit last night but it is moving on.
I didn't intend this to be a guessing game at all but it is amusing me now. It is the correct way up but you are only seeing about a third of it! ;) :D
-
OK, aThai giant Creamcake-House
-
I didn't intend this to be a guessing game at all but it is amusing me now.
Your a pain, do you know that ;)
I am trying to think of what armies Thunderchicken has?
Is that arabic writting?
Sanwar?
Is it some sort of mole machine?
-
Looks hindi to me. I'm going with some form of submersible.
-
It's the sub-oceanic temple of Great C'thulhu!
-
Aren't there just? ::)
lol lol lol
Well, that took long enough ;)
-
It's a codpiece!
-
It's a Martian war machine :D
cheers
James

An Indian VSF Juggernaut?
-
It's a Martian war machine :D

A persian jelly mould?
Without doubt my favourite suggestion lol lol lol lol lol

Cheers

Is it the shell for some kind of giant snail war monster?
-
Is it the shell for some kind of giant snail war monster?
That sounds freakin cool.
Space Gnomes!!! lol
-
I always wanted to get the shell from a giant African land snail and put a howdah on the back....
-

lol
If you ever try, good luck with getting it through customs :o
-
Nah, they're available over here. I considered getting one as a pet and waiting for it to die until I found out how long they live.
-
My friend has some, they escaped their box and ruined her living room! lol
That sounds like an awesome 80's fantasy diorama though. :)
-
I'll go for either the centre of an alien transport ship/flyer (perhaps Jaffa?) ....
... or the body section of the Giant Land Dragon of Shrewsbury
-
It's a Martian war machine :D
cheers
James

You don't thinks it's a Martian war machine by any chance do you ;)
-

You know, a "Horshoe Crab" would make a great ride for Martian or Venusian natives
http://www.assateague.com/horsesho.html
We find them dead and intact here all over. Perserve great too.
-
I can see that as a Martian creature. That or this weird thing I once ate in Australia, a Moreton Bay Bug or something like that. Looks like a flat lobster, tastes much better. I did have to call the waiter over to ask how the hell you ate it though, it was like having a Trilobite on your plate, there was no way in!

Cool, but wouldn't it be full of fleshy stuff? That can't be good. Smelly (or should that be smellier) wargames.

;)
It IS a Martian Warmachine
Svennn

then it has to be the hull of some flying contraption
-
then it has to be the hull of some flying contraption
No it isn't ;) lol

It's the body of a Tripod, in fact it's the body of this tripod (which has been my desktop picture for years)
Better view of the body
(http://adeelghani.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/eea0034f-09e5-496f-bc99-08af27ce6eee_thumb.jpg)
Not sure how I missed that...
-
Ahhhhh
amazing
where do these pictures come from?
hehe, VSF and no rivets.... :D
-
That's why all right-thinking Englishmen should kill Martians. You can tell that they're Strange and Wrong and Not From Round Here because they don't have enough rivets.
-
and what are germans supposed to do about it? ;)
invent a new term?
Wilhelminian SF? ;)
-
They're the work of Robert Czarny, a digital artist. There's a third one too but I can't find a decent image.
and what are germans supposed to do about it?
Same thing, shoot anything without rivets. But as they're foreign and therefore not to be trusted, you can't be too sure. ;) :D
-
Yep, that's the design Svennn is basing the tripod on. :)
I have to admit I havent made it easy for him. The concept is to create a tripod in the mind of a Victorian not someone from the 21st Century, also to give it a hint of gothic appearance. The Victorians did like a bit of gothic! I love the Jeff Wayne concept and many other recent designs including the Spielberg effort (and Fuzzy's ;)) but something nags the back of my mind telling me they look too 'modern' for my needs . I know, I know, the martians are an advanced race but I wanted something different and Svennn is coming up with the goods. It's really hard for me to get my ideas across without sounding contradictory, i.e I want a martian tripod that wouldn't look too out of place in a Victorian Britain setting... it hurts the head so you'll have to bear with me on that one!! There was quite a bit of discussion before Svennn started work but from what I've seen so far, I wont be disappointed...... nor will you lot hopefully ;)
On this occasion and this occasion only I have given permission for rivets to be omitted from the design. :o ;)
-
The design is certainly worth considering
and look, many SF movie designs would not look out of place in VSF
so - no problem
the idea nowadays is to create something new, not to reproduce startrek or starwars
-
Very nice. CAST IT. :D
-
Very nice. CAST IT. :D
As we have talked about doing two different versions the idea of casting the main body had been discussed. I don't fancy doing all the curves again but will have to wait and see how happy I am with it when there is a bit more done. The other consideration is my hit & miss experiences of moulding and casting with RTV and resin.
Hopefully have some basic legs for it to stand on this weekend
-
Not certain if this might interest you for your build but I've always thought this looked more to belong on a Tripod than a human manufactured machine.

Here's another image here. It looks like this fighting machine is spraying the steam that disperses the black smoke.

-
That's going to be one amazing toy whan it's finished ;D
Those legs look very organic - the whole design is, of course, in a crustacean sort of way -but they remind me of bones.
The tentacles would be a real challenge for me (the whole thing would be) - how to get them tough enough for gaming yet still look long and thin enough to be in scale.
Can't wait to see it develop :D
-
This is one cool design. I would seriously reccommend finding someone to cast it.
I love the crustacean feel to those pieces as well. I don't like your additional symbols too much, but that's to each their own. I'd still buy it, just dremel them off. :)
-
That's looking good Svenn,
From one Tripod builder to another :D
If you want some advice on molding and casting email me.
My Tripod is quite large over 35cm high. How high do you expect your's to be.
cheers
Fuzzy.
P.S. OMG Its a rival martian faction! I am now imagining Tripod battles! :o

'Manningsworth' on this forum, a good friend of mine, suggested an alternative ending to War of the Worlds. Imagine if they DID build a life undergroiund and DID capture a fightings machine and built their own...
Perhaps one type could be 'Human' tripods and the other 'martian' in a Human effort to retake their world!!!! :D
-

Damn Foreignworlders just don't understand the importance of rivets-but what do you expect.

I may be mistaken, but I believe these two armies are currently on the opposite sides of the globe. No joy for the humans if they are both Martians, as the factions will have to fight through great swaths of natives to 'get at' each other.

These legs were made for walking
(http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w198/svennnthedhnut/Gluteus055.jpg)(http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w198/svennnthedhnut/Gluteus054.jpg)

-
Are they carved from wood? :o 8) :-*
-
Wood was actually very prevailent as a building material in Victorian times :) even on Mars ;)
Thought long and hard about the legs and in the end realised I could not think of an easier way to make them in the shape I wanted and have the strength to support everything else.
-
The legs have a somewhat...ahh... feminine...look to them. Are you trying to tell us something subliminal about these Martians? ;D
-
I suppose you'll be saying you made your own electric guitar next ::)
lol lol
Very impressive work and they capture the spirit of the original picture perfectly.
It's set as my wallpaer now, to the extreme annoyance of Mrs M :D
-
WOW :-* :-* :-*
Impressive skills.
Have you got moving knee joints as well ???
Any chance of a close up ???
-

Hey, have you been showing my wife your computer? :o lol
Very, very nice, can't wait to see the finished versions. Old Thundercheeks is surely going to be a very happy boy with these.

Amusing; I took one look and thought 'Pierson's Puppeteers'.

We talking this one??
http://adeelghani.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/finalwszystkozlaczonelr.jpg?w=450&h=262
Love the project by the way..
-
Not the best pics, camera low on power and very bad lighting but they will give you a rough idea.
One of the Shropshire two will be painting it and doing the base.

Yeah, that's the one. That's the same one that I could find. Too small really.
-
That is REALLY nice. But I have to wonder if it is some kind of Martian tourist with that big camera. :)
-
I thought it was a giant bank safe!
-
Ya heathens! lol Wells describes the weapon that fires the heat ray as a box-like or camera-like case carried by the metallic arms of the tripod.
Great work Svennn, looking forward to putting these to use.
Yeah, that's the one. That's the same one that I could find. Too small really.
This one is a bit bigger:

Now that you mention it, it all comes back to me. Camera-like heat ray it is then!
-

Color me schooled. :D
I still think the build is awesome.
-
Really great work :-*
-
That is looking fantastic Svenn!
The only thing I think it needs is some feet. It looks like it is walking on stumps. Otherwise terrific work and I can't wait to see it finished and painted.
Cheers
Fuzzy.
P.S. You really should make molds of this. :D
-
Yeah you should mould it. :)
-
Very splendid indeed.
I hope the Shropshire twins are suitably impressed and willing to part with offensive sums of money to acquire them. They are certainly worth it. ;D
-
Yeah you should mould it. :)
Yeah you really should :D
Have to say its amazing and far beyond my meer skills and talents..
-
For the arms/tentecles have you thought of using guitar strings ? just slot wire or metal rod in them in order to shape them to right shape.
-
The piping on the legs is done with guitar strings. The wound strings still have a core which you cannot remove and replace with a stiffer wire so yes, great idea in principle but too tricky.
-
Oh blimey, I can't believe I've missed this thread for so long. Absolutely tip-top old chap, a really wonderful build.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the Thunderchief Twins will accomplish with it, although they might be confused by the conspicuous lack of bottle tops. ;)
-

What they do at GW is cast the guitar wire and run off lengths of it which can be bent easily.
I'm thinking of asking AA if they want to do this as part of their 'parts' range. :)

Its a burden I must bear but the ongoing counselling is getting me through the trauma.

Well that's good! Not sure I could cast with them though, wrong kind of metal. :?
-
Stunning, Svenn; just stunning.
-
Great work, looking forward to seeing it painted.

Any update on this great little project??? :D
cheers
