Svenn: Select country, and it should re-direct you.
@Topic: 18 Pounds for three figures?!? I have to say that is... impressive, even for GW standards.
-
Was it the 3 Barad-Dur for £18? Yes, that's expensive and that is why I gave up buying GW miniatures...........
-
so it does :D and yes they are a tadge. Not being a GW fanboy for many years (if ever, does working there count?) are these LOTR figs on the small side also?

"On the small side..." I'd say they compare to regular GW stuff like Perry Miniatures do to Chiltern.
-
(if ever, does working there count?)
No, we tend to be the bitter ones ;)
The LOTR figs are on the small side yes. Part of the liscencing agreement was that GW's other ranges wouldn't be compatible with the LOTR range. Same reason you'll never see LOTR products and other GW products on the same page in White Dwarf or on flyers.
-
Their LOTR figures are closer to 25mm than their usual figures, smaller than Perry/ Foundry, etc. Nowhere near the size of the usual GW stuff....
-
Surely it's worth £18 for their in-game effect in War of the Ring?
To whit, your opponent realises that you may in fact be a crazy person for spending £18 on 3 miniatures in an army of a couple of hundred, and thus be dangerous outside of the game as well as in...

o_o Had to read this twice.......... lol
-
Nice looking but stupid prices.
-
I'd be surprised if anyone is buying these, because they will already have sent their life savings to Nigeria to faciltate the shipment of that $75bn worth of gold they have been told about in an unsolicited letter.
When their share of the bullion arrives, of course, they will be able to purchase loads of them.
I wasn't told I had to share it! lol
-
Hmmm, £18.00 for three LOTR figures, or £15.00 for a box of Perry Bros' Wars Of The Roses infantry.
Tough call :?
lol lol lol
-
I'd be surprised if anyone is buying these,
wouldn't be so sure >:(
-
Those are the more boring of the command sets too. The Rohan one looks cool, but still, £18!
I think it's paintful spending £15 on a resin vehicle now!!! lol
-
£6 a figure is cheap, the Shaman is £7:

lol!
Well I am going to enjoy painting it! :)
-

Agreed lol.
Outrageous im sure when they were released they were only £12 - £15.
Steve
-
So they are only £18? Which in Dkk GW translates to 180 (factor 10), whereas the Pound is only 8.6 Dkk... So I would actaully have to pay almost £21... >:(
-
nah... I may buy them in my local games store the next time my family gives me money for spending on hobby-stuff at x-mas or birthday - in the meantime I'll wait for at least the rank and file to be made in plastic.... they are £8 for 3 atm... ::)
-
I think the answer to the original question might well be "Yes, they are very ******* expensive" lol
-
Outrageous prices - think I'll stick to buying old citadel minis on ebay for bargain prices, plus postage, plus drunken impulse buys....
...oops! ;D

Ah yes, that mystery parcel from an E-Bay seller containing figures you don't even remember seeing, let alone buying.
That's never happened to me! ::) lol lol

Agreed lol.

Pretty sure it's always been £18...
-
These are new figures out, so that is their only price.
-
Just a bit, its those type of prices that killed GW for me.
-

You have that right, apart from ebay, I haven't bought a GW figure in five years.
-
I find it difficult to justify the sort of prices I see at GW and Foundry, and I'm not strapped for cash like I used to be in the days when I thought Citadel were the best figures available. I did a cost per figure analysis a few years ago and found that whilst a half decent spear & chainmail type figure from various smaller companies averaged at 11kr each, GW were about 45 kroner each.
Thankfully I've never cared for most GW figures because I find their oversized weapons and caricature sculpting style disrupts my sense of proportion. I do however have a few of their LOTR range (mostly goblins and orcs) but even these have been modified to appease my sensibilities.
-
Im surprised they still produce LOTR mini's, every time I went into my local GW I eneded up walking out with freebies, not least being an army of Elven archers, Rohan Warriors, White Council, Gandalkf the White and Strider, sold them all on ebay, kinda wished I'd kept them as Im slowly creeping back into fantasy and could have used some as adventurers...oh well.
And yes £18 for 3 mini's is expensive, and the "your paying for thier special abilities" isnt much of an arguement.
-
and the "your paying for thier special abilities" isnt much of an arguement.
Just to check, you did scroll down to the joke on my last post, right?
-
Haha :D
the "your paying for thier special abilities" isnt much of an arguement.
Now I would have to admire the extreme cynicism behind that marketing ploy! >:D ;)
-
I love the Lord of the Rings Strategy Game. I also love the figures. I own hundreds of them at last check. Most of them I purchase on e-bay, though I've also got bargain sales at different game stores. I have rarely purchased from GW, only an occassional here and there over the years.
I really like those models. I also like the Dol Amroth Men at Arms, and some of the other Feifdom models. I just can't see myself spending ... oh... $100-$200 for enough models to START an army.
I still want their Dragon and the new Flying Nazgul are awesome, but at $50.00 a pop I will wait and look for them online.
Amazing, they're $29.75, and only 3 models. Makes playing any GW games really cost prohibitive. How in the world can you expect people to pay $1000-2000 for an army? I guess that's marketing!
-
Car Boots are always worth a look, I picked up the last boxed set, Moria, a load of metal figures and Smaug for £15.
-
That's almost 40 bucks, for three puny orczes!
Not everything that GW sells is ludicrously expensive. Especially considering that I've bought figures from other places for more. The newer plastic kits aren't too bad price-wise either, being only $20 something for ten figures and leftover bits for kitbashin'.
Part of the liscencing agreement was that GW's other ranges wouldn't be compatible with the LOTR range.
Didn't stop me. Though I certainly got bashed (verbally) by the local GW hard-cases for it.
I still wanna' git me some hobbits for stomp-tastic fun.
-

I had to google "car boots". I was like, uhm, what's a "car boot". We don't have many of those where I live, and I haven't been to a "swap meet" in forever.
Yeah sometimes I can hit the local stores, especially the comic store, where people trade in old figures and such for store credit. I was about to go get some of the Helms Deep walls about 5 months ago. I was going to come back and buy them, but they were gone when I returned! The horror!
Still, e-bay seems to be the best for stuff.
-
18 Pounds for three orcs! Bloody hell! Infinity, well known to be pricey, cost less than 6 (Aust.) Pounds each, madness I tell you, madness o_o o_o o_o
-

Flea market is probably closest.
-
Car Boot sales are a joy. Love them. Usually find something at least once a month if I go every Sunday. lol
You yanks are missing out, but yeah, flea markets are probably closer.
-

I was not refering to your joke, I was actually told this by a GW employee, right before I had a non gw mini finger flicked off a gaming table.... I was not happy.
Flea markets or garage sale would be closest to a car boot sale. I picked up a complete Battlemasters set for £2.50 a few years ago, went to get a hotdog and came back to find my dad had sold it for £5, he was well pleased til I smacked him.
-

Yuo've got to tell us how you managed to do that, then we can save 18quid for these figures!
-
Well the army was picked up during the White Dwarf 30th birthday event, they ran a number of games, the last 3 being the Chav games, "is it a game?" "do you paint them?" and "how much does this all cost then?"
I won "is it a game?" (true or fasle which of these games was GW) and "how much does this all cost then?" (guess the price of the items in the bag) winning a SoB/Guard army and the LotR army. I also won 5 guard tanks, all of which went on ebay (still got the Throne of Judgement and Repntia sisters though.)
-
The EE does some decent stuff but the pricing regime means no "serious" gamer entertains them. Their market is the 13yr old boy with indulgent parents.
On that basis my answer is "No" and "Yes". Is that helpful? Should I become a politician?
Answer yes and no.
Wait a second, "No" and "Yes", then "Yes" and "No"?
You should definitely become a politician!
-
Flicked off the Table?
It's a combination of stuff like that, and their prices which keeps me from buying their products. I have been collecting the Lotr figures, particularly the plastic boxed sets which are reasonably priced. Although they have been creeping up in price within the last few years. Three figures for $30 is just plain stupid. It's reasonably easy to do some conversions with the figures to get similar results.
I do like the War of the Ring rules, and plan on doing some gaming this summer using them. Thank the Dark Lord I picked up my figures when they were still on the cheap. ::)

Funny I was reading the white dwarf when they were first released it was before they called an increase in prices and were originally priced at £15 but like everything else, shot up with the price increases.

Fair enough then!
I wouldn't know mate, stopped buying WD a while back now. Started buying the other wargames mags recently and have found them equally bad, I was appalled to see I had bought one of them, specifically for the Salute info, only to find it was EXACTLY THE SAME... FOR FREE!!!! FREE!!!! at Salute!
I was pissed!
As for Wargames Illustrated, it's just like WD, but FOW obsessed. Some cool VBCW stuff, admittedly.
Shiny to look at... :)
Ignore me, I'm rambling nonsense again.
-
Rambling is understandable and yes White Dwarf is crap, I dont know why I enjoy reading it, I do like the artwork in it though.
Ive also started buying the others WI and MW im sure ill get bored of them all soon.

I used to read White Dwarf back in the 80's. In those days it was fantastic. It had a wide range of articles and games for all kinds of role playing games, including Games which weren't produced by Games Workshop. It all changed though and not for the better. I haven't even looked beyond the cover ilustration of an issue of WD in ten years.
Incidently I still have the first issue of WD. From June/July 1977. Its pretty ad hoc, but always fun to look at. My favourite issues are from around issue 35-70. That seems to be when the balance between creativity and commercialism was at its best. After that it started to go down hill, getting less and less geared towards role playing and more and more commercial until it reached the point where it was essentially just a ridiculously expensive ad rag for GW.
I wonder what Ian Livingstone does these days. Any one know?
-
probably lives on the income he's made by re-releasing the fighting fantasy books. They are all starting to pop up in the charity shops, just like the first lot. ::)
Oh. FOund out.
