Yep, I am going make a Horno.

All cooking was done outside the adobe house. Bread was baked inside the horno (beehive) oven. A wood fire was built inside the horno and allowed to burn until the entire oven was very hot. Then the embers were removed and the bread placed inside the oven. A sack soaked with water was wrapped around the wooden door so it would not catch fire.
It fits nicely in with my adobe stuff and I have been meaning to make one for ages, so what better opportunity than do it here in the competition. Not sure about whether it will fit on a CD etc, so will have to have a think about that, but it has fired (no pun intended) my enthusiasm to get on with making one.

Very nice! but... I must remember to put on my glasses when reading the forum (I misread: "Malamute gets horny" - now we all know that can't happen... lol)

Oh I don't know...
lol lol lol
I like the fact that the colour on this is in the same style as your other buildings, nice of the Mexicans to use your paint scheme for their stuff :D
cheers

Will we be able to cook in it?
-
I fully expect tiny fajitas in there.

Oh they will be in there alright, along with some Buritos and Chimichangas, you just won't be able to see them as we have to keep the door closed to keep the oven really hot ;)
-
Apparently the smell of bread baking gives a property a homely feel and makes it more attractive to buyers ;)
The one in the Alamo film was more brownish, sorry to be a uniform nazi lol
-
If we're getting picky I would have to chime in that chimichangas are deep fried. ;D
I expect this to end up on the Boot Hill miniatures site eventually.

Here are some WIP shots of the build so far:
Don't tell Mrs M about her favourite CD going missing from the collection ;)
Foam Core, Polystyrene ball, kebab skewers, Balsa wood and Polyfilla for the basic construction.
I cut the foam core to size, cut the ball in half, glued it to the CD with PVA and then gave it the usual Polyfilla rendering.
When dry it was sanded to a semi smooth finish. A small door was cut to shape from balsa wood. Shown here with a Foundry Peon for size comparison.

Most of the ovens I have seen in movies and photos always have a pergola/roof. I wanted to add a timber one that will eventually be covered with reeds cut from a brush.

The pergola in place with sand textured base ready for painting. The reeds will go on when the model is fully painted.

Some small pieces to add as set dressing along with a twig log pile.

Thats it for now until its painted :)

Nice job, simple and effective. Bet it'll look aces when its painted. :)
-
Wow, real simple but oh so effective! I really like it. Darn shame I haven't seen the rest of your adobe stuff :(.
Yours truly,
Sir Dryden

Ooo you bugger, you're nearly done ;D Looking good :)

Just put the base coat on and started the barrels :D
-
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! :)
-
Looking sweet!
-
Wonderful.
My favourite restaurant in the Canaries is 'El Horno' in the little town of Villaverde on Fuerteventura.
Huge T-bone steaks to die for... straight out of the grill in the horno that sits in the corner :P
And it looks just like yours (except it's not mounted on Bridget Jones :D)
-
I do misread the title of this thread everytime :D
Don't get me wrong, I love it dearly and its a beatiful piece of terrain, but. I was hoping for a more hardcore approach with LED-lights since you based it on a cd and all :)
-
Very nice work :-* :-* :-*
Would there not be a high risk of fire with a reed roof?

You would think so, but lots of photos and films show a roof of twigs, thatch etc. It is odd isn't it?
-
Eskimos in Mexico :o Surely your Igloo would melt :D
-
:-*
You make it look so darn easy...
-
I really love this - that little door is sweet! :-*
Any hints with your Pollyfilla foo?
I hate applying this stuff and it often doesn't stick well for me. Do you water yours down a little?
Well done, a simple but very effective piece.

One of my favourite parts of the world. Go there every year. :)

Yep, water it down and stir it well. Apply with an artists palette knife. If necessary after it's applied and left to start to cure for a little while use an old paintbrush dipped in water to smooth it over even more.
Once dry, rub down with fine sand paper to take any remaining rough bits off.
-
I usually add a few squirts of PVA to my poly to make sure it doesn't fall off.
Some great work there Malamute!

My problem with mis-reading is my browser's font almost connects the 'r' to the 'n' to make an 'm', which has me constantly biting my lip before exclaiming "how rude!"
For a seemingly simple design, really nice detailing going on. Can't wait for the finished painted images.
Is there anyone on this damn forum whom I don't hate for their brilliant work?!? lol

Looks good.

Stonkin', Nick!
-
I've finished it now. I had such fun making it, I want to show the finished model, but i know i have to wait a while. ::) lol
-
Serves you right for making it so fast ;D :)
Can't wait to see it 8)
cheers
James
-
You could have seen it yesterday if you had asked nicely ;)
-
Bugger, never thought of that :(
cheers

I also read it like that, and thought: 'Another thread with pics of Sophia Loren, Claudia Cardinale, and Salma Hayek'. lol lol ;)
