As the song says: I'm just as sane as anyone...well, perhaps not! Cold-ass, rainy, bleak weather has hit the prairies and I begin to have dreams of an ominous sanitorium...I must build it! it consumes me!...so, I guess that'll be the winter project this year. Since I've got an early start I'll try and make it super crazy.
The concept: 5 part sanitorium: front gates, interior walls all fit together but can be removed or used as stand alone pieces. This will fit 'into' the board which will have a secret sub-floor, labs, torture chamber ect, hopefully frightfully lit up with l.e.d.s. I wanna have broken glass on the floors, blown up cells, spilled poo buckets, creepy scrawlings, bloody hand prints...reception desk... ;D
May also do up some extra pieces...hedge maze, walkway...so I could do the grounds as well. :)
Fairly ambitious project I know...but I just may be crazy enough to get the job done! Infact I think I'll go and start hacking at some foam right now... o_o
-
..ok it seems that you have lost it for good! o_o
and that sounds wonderful! lol. That idea of yours is awesome. I wish all the best in your project. I hope that I'll have some spare time also to construct something sinister for my games.
-
Sounds awesome.
Don't worry about the weather - they call that "summer" on this side of the pond :~}
-
Looks to me you have had inside info on this place all along, you never did say were the idea came from for the game Strange Aeon, I thought it was some thing you made up in your mind.
My GOD I have been reading the rambles of a mad man this last year, God help us if any of it is true.

A torture chamber? …in an asylum? I think you mean a treatment chamber ;)
I’ve spend sometime lurking working in the basement of several hospitals and you might be surprise to see how creepy some of these "modern" hospitals might be… lol

Have you seen the BBC drama series "Being Human" ?
That has some scenes in a hospital....

Just got the basics hacked away. Looks good so far. Front entrance with reception desk, 8 cells, central guard chamber, upper level...even made up some nasty looking matresses. Now onto all the wall ends and cell doors and the like. Lots and lots left to do before it looks like the asylum in my mind...will try and get up a couple 'in progress' shots at some point next week.
Eventually I will need brick-a-brack (tables, chairs, buckets...)for the detailing. I will get some of the great Pardulon stuff naturally. But, is there any other stuff out there?
-
Black cat bases do a whole bunch of suitable scenery bits, everything from autopsy tables to wheelchairs...

This project sounds great.Check this one out for inspiration.

I would love to do a whole set-up like it.Got some of the pieces already from Black Cat bases and Pardulon.
-
Have you seen these pieces :
http://www.frontlinewargaming.co.uk/
the 25mm range includes things like Frankenstein's laboratory or Dr Jekyll's lab. but also the Wild West range includes things like hotel & bank furniture, and the 3 musketeers range includes library shelves.
-
Will have to get some Black Cat stuff for sure! :-*
What about plastic stairs?

I got some of the Wild West sets, but aside from being rather smelly resin, the casting quality is so bad (air bubbles and flash everywhere) that they are almost unusable.
-
I am sure we can help you out ;)
I have to give a vote for some of the Pardulon bits, it is beautiful and their stall is always my first stop at Antwerp.

Cool i can't wait to see this build up..
I so want to get the time to build a nice Manor house for my board. I have a paper one but would prefer a more solid structure.

I think this is a great idea! You mentioned in progress shots...? I picked up some great stuff for a gate I made for a diorama from ebay after seeing Svennn use it for one of his VSF contraptions:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150468160200&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400110358693&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Basically it was the top one glued to two of the bottom ones. I can't show you a pic until the book I did it for is published but hopefully that helps! (If you haven't done the gate yet).

Here are some pix of the start of the asylum...
Front View...still very basic.
Interior front...may detail with tile floor...
All 5 pieces...the cells line the right and left walls.
Fitted together with the 'explodo' middle piece removed...this will (eventually...) lead to the under-board...catacombs, secret experiment labs and whathaveyou.

Thumbs up! more to come...

cheers grimm
-
Wow! You have been busy...
-
Looks great so far! Didn't realize it was going to be a ruined asylum.
What're the walls made of?
-
Thats looking cracking so far, like the idea of an underground area as well..
-
Very inspiring job!! ;D
Have you played Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the Earth? There is and scene with a very "nice" corridor plenty of blood oozed from the walls and under the cell doors...
Regards,
Andrés.

Thanx guys. The walls are made of 'Woodland Scenics' terrain board foam...or something like that. It comes in a bunch of sizes...I think the ones I used are 1/8 and 1/2". Once glued I seal them a few times in a mixture of white glue, future floor wax and paint.
Also, thanx Grimm...I didn't get a single one in jail, or in an asylum for that matter... ;)
-
Terrain Board foam?? Wonder if thats what we call suger board in the UK..
-
I'm not 100% on the name...I'll know in a few days when I go to buy more, as I've run out now...

Isn't that always the way and always when your on a roll :D
-
Looking ace so far.....!
-
Looking good - and I know what would be perfect for the hole in the middle... giant tentacles!
A chthonian coming up with the floor would work very nicely :-*
-
I just may have some giant tentacles around the shop...seriously. :-I
-
:D Yay! you can never have enough giant tentacles lying around lol
-

You know thats a weird thought :o
-
Ah, excellent.
The modular structure will be most pleasing and I agree, the under-board is an excellent idea.
-
Got the main structure built and sealed...now for detailing. :( It takes soooooooo long...
-
Just a side note Unkie Mikie, The Virtual Armchair General is RUMORED to be working on a mental asylum for their Mean Sets paper terrain.
And if its as good as their other pieces, that will be awesome!
www.thevirtualarmchairgeneral.com/620-Mean-Sets.htm
They are a lot nicer in person than the pics...
-
Here are a few more shots of the w.i.p. Plus some Maniacs for scale...and 'cause it's an asylum... ;D

hehe. i do recognize that line of thought:)
"ill just make this *insert huge project* and then we can play THIS!"
-
Looks awesome so far, can't wait to see it finished :)
-
that is a great looking model,
it will be awesome when you have finished
dodge
-
I can't wait to see some battle report inside that asylum!!
-
Nice work so far.
What did you use for the lettering? (And what is the actual name of the asylum since part of the name is long gone?)
-
The name is: Archam Sanitorium...(useful for Batman and Mythos stuff...)
The letters were from an 'open' sign. It came with 3-5 of each letter. Just for luck the letters I used were from the first ever Strange Aeons sales board.
-
Looking good,
I love the detailing, you can really make it your own. I imagine that you can really make this model tell a story.
Cheers
Andy

B-b-bump! This project is done for this year at least. All pieces are finished and ready to be played on! Blood splattered and burned out!...that explains me and the asylum... o_o
Pictures to follow the Calgary Comic and Game expo where it will be used in a game demo I will be running on Sat. and Sun.
Next year I will build the catacombs underneath the asylum... >:D
I'm not mad I tell you!
-
I can't wait to see the completed photos Uncle Mike! ;D
-
Yea, I need to be inspired to build mine!
-
Can't wait to see the result of your excellent building skills...catacombs would be awesome!
By the way
I'm not mad I tell you!
Nobody on this board is mad...everyone else is...
-
Photos..... ;D
Yes, please!
:D

I think Steven King once said, "We are all insane, just the ones outside the asylum's hide it better.."

I´m very happy to hear that you have finished this project!! Looking forward to seeing those pictures!!
