As the Prussians slowly encircle London a surprise attack is launched on the Chiswick gasworks in West London. Any disruption to the gas supply would be disastrous to the military's ability to defend the western suburbs.
The Prussians time their attack well, two companies of infantry usually detailed to guard the works have been despatched to support heavy fighting near Surbiton. Only a light guard remains, will they be able to hold off an attack by four crack Prussian units with supporting armour until reinforcements arrive? Hope you enjoy the report and pics.
The battlefield with the gasworks bottom right:

The Prussians will have to cross the canal and clear the killing ground before reaching cover:

The British defences covering the canal bridge, manned by a smal detachment of Royal Marines and a lightning cannon. Captian Brighton-Early stands next to the Impervious Suit in the background:

The local constabulary is left to guard the works:

The attack begins. In the distance an armoured carrier is seen on the road lumbering towards the canal bridge:

The ground heaves as a dreaded tunneling machine surfaces, it's short of its target and the marines will have to make up ground:

The carrier is immediately stopped in its tracks by the lightning cannon. The surviving occupants, a gas-gun squad, decamp but are immediately cut down by lively fire from the Royal Marines:

Despite losing the element of surprise the remaining Prussian units gain ground quickly with help from a rather unreliable steam tank. In the distance a Prussian flank attack begins to develop as a unit crosses an unguarded footbridge:

Can the defenders hold the gasworks?
Will reinforcements arrive in time to save the day?
Will the Prussians prevail and bring chaos to London's defences?
What do you think?
I'll let you know tomorrow......... ;)
P.S I have no idea why the pics are different sizes but then again I have the IT skills of a banana.

Wow.
Gorgeous for both terrain & miniatures. That'd be a pure joy to play on.
Looking forward to the conclusion ;D

Arhh at last, proper VSF, good to see the Anglo/Prussian war of 1881 once again. :D
A splendid looking game using your wonderful buildings and figures. :)
Can't wait to see what fate befalls Captain Brighton-Early and that dastardly Prussian Herr Dryer.... ???
-
Love seeing all of those great buildings we watched on the build page on a drop dead gorgeous table :o :o. Don't apologize for pics of this quality, more please!

Thanks chaps. :)
On the terrain front some credit needs to go to Svennn too as he put the gasworks and canal together for me.
-
Great to see you posting again and some!!!!! Fantastic looking terrain, great figures and a fun looking game.
Love it
:-* :-* :-* :-*

It all integrates together nicely. The thought of cramming so much into such a tight space would have put me off but it works a treat. Not seen that canal for about two years - how time flies.
Unless there is a shift change at the gasworks and the Brits get some re-inforcements from the workforce I see the dastardly hun drinking in the White Hart by lunch time :o
-
Super looking game Neil, great figures and wonderful terrain as always from you. Love the canal.
-
BEAUTIFULLY INSPIRING STUFF! It reminds me of the photos from War Games Illustrated. VERY WELL DONE!

The diversity of terrain, machines and miniatures is quite stunning!
Looking forward to seeing the battle develop with lots more photos!

Lovely! This was a time when streets were still clean and one could eat off the pavement... lol

Really beautiful setup. Very nice to see the way it all came together.

Great to see you back in the saddle, er, at table again! Hope you have the breather to enjoy the fruits of your labor!
I know, as long as you keep snapping the piccies, we will... :D

Absolutely stirring stuff! Great looking battle with some lovely minis and what-not (especilly like the mole-machine), but also fantastic to see all the architecture together at last.

Great stuff, I'm green with envy. Looking forward to seeing the next chapter

Thanks for all the great comments!! I've had a crap month or so and its good to be back in the game.
There's still a fair bit of work to do. There's a couple of builds at various stages of completion including a warehouse and in the last couple of days I've started on a bloody great railway viaduct - as the railways were so important to the British economy its hard to ignore them. I'll probably build a station at some point too..... and another pub.
As Guedens said the set up still looks a bit too clinical but I'm intending to add more street furniture and signs of civilisation such as wagons, barrows, shops with displays etc. While I'm putting a wish list together I'm waiting for the money fairy to leave a wad of notes under my pillow ;).

*Thumbs up*

Wonderful stuff. Can I ask, who makes the hooded figures with the flamethrowers...or are they homemade?
-
WOW Neil :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
You have surpassed yourself.
Great to see it all together in one photo. Is that an extra close between the buildings. Gas works looks great all laid out. Some very nice figures as well.
Inspiring stuff.
Looking forward to the rest of the pics.
I have been back and forward through these original pics about half a dozen times and the drool has nearly killed my computer. :D

gamerMac, glad you like project. You'll see them in the flesh in November, should I bring a bib? ;) With regards to the close, do you mean between the terraced houses?
-
Splendid looking gasworks (and the rest of the layout too)
-
Jolly nice stuff Old Chap

That's just top drawer! Absolutely spiffing. really like the rowhouses.
I also rather like the Prussian APC. Simple but effective model.

With regards to the close, do you mean between the terraced houses?
Many years ago when I was at GW we had a conversation about colloquial terms for a passage, a genal, a close etc. and it escalated to the point where during every phone call for a few days we would ask for the local term - there are hundreds.
And should the title not be "Trouble Up't Gasworks" :)
-
Wonderful looking game. I am a mite envious. :D
-
With regards to the close, do you mean between the terraced houses?
He means the gully ;)
Lovely stuff Neil, great to see such spiffing pics. Inspirational as always 8)
-
Yous English people don't even know your own language. lol
The close is the bit between the houses. :D
-
Aha! I'm with you now. It must have been your accent. lol
Yes, it's new. I'm going to put a few alleyways and rat runs together too as they will come in handy for the adventure games.
And should the title not be "Trouble Up't Gasworks" :)
I'm not sure the residents of Chiswick would have swallowed that. :)
-
The close is the bit between the houses. :D
Nope, that's a jitty :)
-
Ginnel.
Or a chare.
When it isn't a lane.
Don't know what they call them in Chiswick though.
