Title: A Fantasy Miscellany (2016-01-24): Great minotaur and resin buildings
Post by: Westfalia Chris on June 27, 2011, 09:20:18 PM
Hi all,

at the Scarborough convention on Saturday, I purchased some Fantasy miniatures for a change, including a set of the splendid Four A Miniatures goblins. Wonderful little fellows, charmingly old-fashioned in the design style, but up-to-date concerning sculpting and casting quality - excellent value for money.

Anyway, here is the first set of five. I've got six more which I will paint over the course of the week, and a handful of Harlequin Goblins (looking like Kev Adams sculpts, too, although I might be mistaken) which should work next to these (apart from the fact that the Four A figures sport the most darling couture fashioned from lizardskin, whereas the Harlies are more "traditional", albeit well-armoured).

I envisage them as a kind of raiding party, or dungeon-dwellers. As for the skintone, I am not that fond of the "greenskin" approach, and always preferred the more leathery varieties. I'll probably paint the next ones with a bit more olive tinted into the mix, but keep the more "fleshy" overall tone.

Also, from the Dave Thomas scrounging bin, I got a handful of figures (a pound each), the first of which is Halburga, the Valkyrie:

Wargames Foundry, if I am not mistaken, and an outrageously funny figure to paint. Inspiration was quite easy to come by, too, as I merely had to look out of the window on a Saturday night in this Northern Town. ;)

Lovely work on the goblins - mine are languishing somewhere in the paint queue...

Halburga looks pretty fearsome as well!

Great work on these chris.Very quickly done too.Love the different skin coulour to the normal green's that have been used on other goblins.

The foundry miniature is very well done too.Love the gem work.

Kev did the Goblins for Harlequin and also some dwarves too.

Lovely work on the gobbos, it's great to see the variety of colours that people have painted them. I'll have to dig out the photos of the set I painted (before I finish the next batch!) to share. :D

Very nice Chris  :-* 8)

I've never been to keen on the 'fleshy' colour for goblins but you've pulled it off for these  8)

WOW!  :o Those goblins are superb! Never really paid much attention to the Four A Minis before but they are certainly something different from the usual take on goblins. Nice to see something original for a change & made even better by your wonderful painting. I might have to nab myself a few for my next game of Skulldred  :D

Thanks! I am really happy with this purchase (and am encouraging others to purchase copious amounts from Four A, so that we can see more releases soon!  :D), and am currently painting the next batch of five (and a sea demon, those are hilarious, too).

A note on scale (which I forgot to add previously): The goblins are mounted on 20mm round slotta bases which fit them quite nicely. Most of the ones I got were supplied with 20mm squares, but I prefer round ones for skirmish gaming (and am no longer of that age where you have the time and enthusiasm to paint whole armies); still, I think they look better on the small round slottas than on standard 25s.

You did a TERRIFIC job bringing some GREAT minis to life. The Rubenesque Babe is LOVELY...she looks like she can actually wield her weapons & is bloody-minded enough to do so quite effectively...a fine choice of colors.
As a Goblin Guy, I LOVE your take on those Oh-So-Cool Lads. After years of doing my Goblins of various types in green, I'm returning to other skin shades; I really like how your flesh tones look. All VERY WELL DONE!

I know, it's been ages since I posted in this thread, but over the last few weeks, I managed to dig out, strip and finally repaint a bunch of Fantasy figures which had been lingering in my lead mountain for years - indeed, the skeletons are actually the very first 28mm figures I bought back in 1995. Painted them up to go with the rest of the fantasy figures, and maybe will play some skirmish games using the Showdown rules (as the local gaming group really likes those, any I am quite comfortable with the rules mechanisms myself).

First, a little bestiary - some you may have seen before.

A bear by Steve Barber miniatures, originally painted for Old West and Gothic Horror games:

A RAFM metal snake and a Fenryll resin hydra, painted to match the big Hydra I painted in early 2010:

Said large Hydra (took a new photo today):

Some warhounds from the Chronopia range:

An old "Iron Drake" by Grenadier, which I painted a bit more "lizardy":

Moving on to characters, two adventurers - don't know where the archer's from, but the dwarf is from the "Shattered Isles" range currently sold by Black Hat minis:

A bunch of Skeleton warriors, by Heartbreaker. As mentioned, the first figures I bought in 1995, crudely painted then in enamel paint - actually, I didn't manage to strip all the old paint, but enough to make them re-paintable. Went for a very reduced paint scheme of black cloth, with strongly verdigrised bronze armour and arms to make them look a bit more archaic than the steel-weapon-armed adventurers and barbarians.

I also have another warrior and a Necromancer lined up for painting, and an ancient Grenadier figure wearing a lizardskin.

Finally, some terrain. First, a mixed bunch of Grendel fantasy huts which I bought for a ridiculously low price at a convention (less than a Euro apiece):

Wonderful models, those. Very nostalgic in their appeal, and I'd really like to have more of the "barbarian" hut in the centre - I love the stone and tusk construction. Very compact, so they won't take too much tablespace, but still imposing enough to work well with 28s.

And finally, some megaliths made from the resin "coals" I got from Jolly Bob - thanks again, marvellous stuff, easily wetsanded to provide a good footing, then mounted on 2p coins and a 40mm washer (depending on size), and a 4" beer coaster for the sacrificial stone assembly. I've got some more left over and will probably build a large "chieftain's hut" from some, and use the rest to make more megaliths.

Thanks for looking!

Nice.  I like the reptilian stuff, in particular.

Moving on to characters, two adventurers - don't know where the archer's from, but the dwarf is from the Shifting Lands range currently sold by Black Hat minis:

The archer has a Copplestoney feel to him.  A few years back there was a British company, best known for selling military books (Chelifer perhaps?) which briefly ran a miniatures arm.  They did packs of modified versions of old Grenadier fantasy.  I wonder if this is one of theirs.  Edit: I'm wrong.  See WK's identification below.

Mammoth tusks and bones really were used in architecture in stone age Ukraine, so a few companies make similar models, as well as Grendel.  Steve Barber has some in his "Prehistoric Settlement" range.  There's at least one other manufacturer, too, but my memory isn't working well today.  Edit: Gale Force 9 "Battlefield in a Box".

It's a Wargames Foundry Robin Hood, by John Pickford.

Yes, just realised that a moment ago and corrected the original post before reading this one...  lol still, an embarassing mistake.

Here's what I thought was the Shattered Isles catalogue listing for the figure:

http://www.blackhat.co.uk/online_shop/product_info.php?cPath=121_123_139&products_id=1510&osCsid=bf96934779149efb877ff0cc2c64d645

Although now that I recheck it, the figure is slightly different, notably the axe. The style is very Foundry-ish, though - so there might be a different origin to it (I don't know where I got the figure, so it could be any of the two - I assumed the SI range as the figure is practically identical, and I only noticed the difference now that I rechecked).

Title: Re: A Fantasy Miscellany (2013-12-30): Heartbreaker & Harlequin Goblins
Post by: Westfalia Chris on December 30, 2013, 09:24:40 AM
Well, two years after I last updated this thread, something new!

On Christmas Day, I finally watched the first Hobbit movie, which incited two follow-ups: seeing the second one yesterday and pangs of nostalgia, which I indulged in by painting up a couple of Heartbreaker and Harlequin Goblins which I had lying around for quite some time (some, actually since June 2011). Also, I finished a Harlequin Minotaur Lord to work as a mercenary in the Goblin's ragtag band, dubbed "Bugluk's Blackshields" for the time being.

Goblin characters:

Goblin fighters with swords:

Goblin fighters with spears:

Goblin fighters with clubs and maces:

(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/Christian_S_1979/Modelling%20and%20Miniatures/Miscellaneous%20Fantasy/BLACKSHIELDS_GOBLIN_CLUBS_AND_MACES_zps55c9e6b3.jpg)

And finally the Minotaur.

Very happy with how the Goblins turned out - although the scheme of burnt skintone, leathery browns and metal armour is not particularly exciting, I like how it ties them together as a whole. To my pleasant surprise, I found out that Ral Partha Europe still sell the Heartbreaker fantasy range (or parts thereof) and ordered a handful of Orcs and Goblins to fill out this raiding party to some 40 individuals.

Not too happy with the Minotaur. I had originally purchased it somethime in 1995, done a rather poor job on it then. I stripped it, chopped down the huge integral base to mount him to the 40mm slotta-type one, and re-painted him, only to have an inspiration for a more interesting scheme right after applying the final coat of varnish. Gnah. But I won't strip him again, considering the rather boring overall pose as well as the soft sculpt; I'll probably look into getting a nicer figure, possibly an Ogre instead of a Minotaur, although it may be difficult to find something that matches the Kev Adams-style goblins these days.

Game-wise, I hope to stir up some interest in fantasy skirmishing, what with the Hobbit movie (not too fond of all those rollercoaster ride sequences, but damn, Smaug is awesome, although I couldn't stop thinking of Scrooge McDuck lol). Also, I may be building some terrain pieces to go with them, possibly generic enough to be used beyond this project, but I've got an idea for a ruined human watchtower re-purposed by the Goblins which I may still follow up.

Thanks for looking! Comments welcome, as usual.

That is great and useful news (to me at least). I have some 30 dwarf rangers and a couple of handfuls of goblins and have always lamented not buying more back in my teens. Very characterful minis, also or should I say particuarly these ones you've churned out here Chris, nice tones, particularly on the skin (as bright green has grown old on me).

Keep 'em coming! :)

If you look closely, you can see some sitting a bit higher on their bases - those would be the Harlequin ones which have integral bases, the Heartbreaker ones have tabs for slottas.

All AFAIK:

The characters are all HHG. The rightmost swordsgob is a Harlequin one, as are the two speargobs to the left, and the second clubber from the right. I don't know where the small, spear-wielding gobbo is from - I  pretty much bought the lot of them loose. Personally, I think they are so similar in style, pose and equipment that I wouldn't worry too much myself.

Great little collection. i like the skin colour. I've been planning to get me a small army Kev Adams goblin army:
Heartbreaker, Harlequin, Crooked Claw, Black Hat, Midlam, 4A, Alternative Armies, the resin Grendel goblin rabble...

The Heartbreaker ones still have that chunky aspect like the last few Kevin Adams did for Citadel,  but they still look good next to the Harlequin gobs.

Painted up some more minis over the last few days.

First, two Barbarians to add to my existing tribe:

These are both Citadel miniatures, the left one a 2000-ish Chaos Marauder, the right one a 1980ies-something "Barbarian" (they were damn creative back in the day, but hell yes, we got what it said on the tin).

Next, a Pathfinder "Hook Mountain Ogre". The head was a separate piece which I didn't see before buying (a bit of an impulse buy on Monday), and I am still not too happy with the rather goofy, "muppet-ish" grin, but the rest of the mini is done well-enough and suitably imposing on a 50mm plastic base.

It fits in well enough, but (along with the Chaos Marauder above) convinced me that I should stick to older miniatures, funds permitting. The Ogre has that certain post-2000 D&D blasé impression, IMHO - workmanlike, but with some strange aspects that leave it lacking in my book.

I think you've done a great job on that Ogre. I agree his face is kind of goofy, but he matches some goblin faces, maybe.

Nice.

Well, it took me some time to take the pics (and they didn't turn out too well, have to try again with daylight and possibly with some scenery) and wanted to show what I painted over the last few weeks when not indulging in pseudonostalgia on various Oldhammer blogs.

Three more Goblin warriors, which I had missed while painting the armoured Goblins shown previously.

Then, my order from Ral Partha Europe of ex-Heartbreaker minis arrived earlier this week (yay) and I set to painting those - first, some Goblins with spears:

Next, some Orc warriors:

The idea is for the Orcs to lead groups of similarly-armed Goblins, with the whole bunch representing a rag-tag rabble of a raiding party rather than a proper army. Leaning towards GW's "Lord of the Rings" for rules, but will also try Savage Worlds Showdown.

Painting the "face shields" was a fun exercise inspired by a nice tutorial on an Oldhammer blog (http://realmofchaos80s.blogspot.de/2012/07/arcane-armorials-80s-shield-designs.html). Never quite got the appeal back in the day when I still played Warhammer, but it's grown on me, and for these retro figures, it works quite well, IMHO.

A Reaper Mountain Troll to support the smaller goblinfolk:

On the "Good" side of the fantasy spectrum, some Heartbreaker and Harlequin Dwarves. These were some of my very first wargaming figures back in 1995. Lucky enough, I had already started to use acrylics in place of enamels, and the stripping process was much less of a hassle than with some enamel-painted ones which are still soaking.

And finally, a Viking warrior acting as a "human adventurer" from some "great human city". Mainly as a short break and to finally paint this figure which had its metals done sometime in 2008 and waited to be finished since then.

More to come as I finish them up - more Kev Adams Goblins, a RAFM dragon and some odds and ends. I'm a on a bit of a fantasy roll right now and intend to milk it for all its worth.

Thanks for looking!

Well, well, well, what do we have here?

Beating the "three-month-no-post" warning by a mere 10 days, I finally managed to take some pics of minis I painted since the last update. A lot happened, most importanly me getting a new, non-temporary, rather decent and interesting job, and while the number of minis I got painted is small, I'm still quite happy with them. Also, preparing for an upcoming move means I won't be painting many minis until I'm settled in (still hoping to find a decent flat with space to establish a "nuclear man-cave").

Well, some more retro-goblins, mainly Harlequin, and two orcs, one Heartbreaker and one Harlequin, which I found at a recent local swap-meet.

(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/Christian_S_1979/Modelling%20and%20Miniatures/Miscellaneous%20Fantasy/BLACKSHIELDS_GOBLIN_WARRIORS_AND_BANNER_zps88306864.jpg)

(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/Christian_S_1979/Modelling%20and%20Miniatures/Miscellaneous%20Fantasy/BLACKSHIELDS_GOBLIN_CLUBS_AND_MACES_2_zps6ca868f6.jpg)

Next, an evil wizard and a couple of skeletal monstrosities (Heartbreaker and Reaper, respectively). The wizard is actually one of the first minis I ever painted (# 11 or so) back in the mists of time, and recently underwent the great cleansing to be repainted in red scheme. The "arachno-assassins" I bought on a whim in January. Strange things, those. Not exactly a full match for my Heartbreaker skellies, but Harryhausenesque enough to tickle my fancy.

(http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg236/Christian_S_1979/Modelling%20and%20Miniatures/Miscellaneous%20Fantasy/EVIL_WIZARD_AND_SKELETAL_HOMUNCULI_zpse944f580.jpg)

And finally, a rather nice burst in productivity. A week ago, I was on a business trip to Mannheim and in the evening found time to visit one of my favourite hobby stores, which holds treasures of ages past (albeit at prices to match, yet less outrageous than some Ebay sellers'). There, I found this set of the Vendel "Not-Fellowship". Quite a nice set of figures - I particularly like the animated movie-style Aragorn, although I still wonder why the set includes two Gandalfs, yet no Gimli. For the latter, the dwarf adventurer I painted three years ago is a good match in size and style until I find another mini to replace him (the figure doesn't exactly looks like the son of Gloin to me).

I painted these minis over the last weekend. One night for nine figures, quite a nice return to form. I'm really looking forward to getting finished with all that moving business so I can get the hobby back on track properly.

Next up on the painting desk are a Harlequin ogre and some evil champions I recently bought from the good Admiral Benbow. Still pondering which direction the project should take, but I am currently inclined quite strongly towards the Tolkienverse. Been looking into "retro chunky" Balrog figures over the last few weeks, but haven't yet found anything that feels right - suggestions will be welcome beyond the older Citadel, Ral Partha, Reaper and Harlequin offerings.

Thanks for looking!

Hi folks,

well, this project isn't dead, but in my customary fashion, hasn't been updated in almost a year. I did actually paint a whole lot of figures over the last few months (a good dozen Goblins, with more Orcs and Goblins on the painting table, plus a whole bunch of Dwarves also finished), but I'll postpone showing those until I get my lighting issues sorted out properly.

Still, the pics of this item worked out nicely, and I wanted to do a short update (I'm currently doing a bit of "Mirkwood"-style terrain which I'll show later). A couple of months ago, I found a silver-plated decorative iguana figure in a local gardening/pet store, which I originally intended to re-paint as-is, but then I found a leftover head from my Grendel Hydra, attached it and covered/sculpted the neck/shoulder area. It's a bit hunchbacked, but does look suitable ill-tempered at being disturbed while lying around near a warm spot down in its cave.

And finally with a Foot Sergeant by Fireforge Games for size.

Evidently, it is a small dragon, but I think it might make it more manageable in a gaming environment than certain huge beasties. I'm thinking of doing one or two more to have them herded into battle by a Balrog, Sack-of-Gondolin style, but those bloody iguanas seem to be sold out everywhere in this neck of the woods.

Anyway, I'll focus on the Mirkwood trees first, and then finally decide on what kind of gaming surface I want for the fantasy stuff. Currently leaning towards some fenlands-style moors, but having second thoughts about a proper Woodland Realm thing (you know, river coursing along the board, lots of vegetation in various states...). Comments and suggestions welcome!

Hoo boy, six months nothing. I blame Doctor Who and the LPL. :D

Seriously though, I had painted a couple of Fantasy minis back in January which I had planned to use for the LPL, then decided on the Doctor Who theme, and so they languished in the boxes. Then, a couple of weeks back, I got caught by a real Fantasy fit (absolutely don't know what triggered it, but it was unusually productive) and painted up a bunch of prepped figures.

Most are reinforcements for my Equal-Opportunity Horde of Evil That Does Not Do Racial Discrimination, but some Dwarves of which I am particularly fond have also snuck in at the back.

First, I was most lucky in getting a couple of the old Fantasy Warlord figure range from our esteemed Admiral Benbow. While I am not a big fan of the "open hands and separate weapons" approach, some figures are pure oldschool gold.

An Orc warlord:

Goblin foot:

Next, an Evil WarriorTM from Alternative Armies ex Asgard:

A Harlequin Great Orc warrior:

An Iron Claw Miniatures Goblin catapult:

A Grenadier "Old World Dragon":

And finally a Reaper Not-Balrog to top things off.

On to the Dwarfhold!

Dwarven King and bondsmen, by Lead Adventure Miniatures:

Dwarven Warriors by Lead Adventure Miniatures:

Two Harlequin Dwarves:

That's it for painted minis today! I've actually done up a batch of skeletons (with an eye on Frostgrave), but I haven't yet finished the bases, so those will come with the next update.

For the undead force, however, I also dug out a 20-year-old Grendel undead dragon. Now, normally I do not do WIP shots, but with this one, I am lost for a proper paint scheme. I would prefer to have him in a grey scheme with bones and innards to provide contrast, to match the other undead minis I've already done, but I already did a grey dragon (see previous update) and am wondering if I should do something else. So, if you have any suggestions for a good skintone base colour that would make a convincing zombie dragon, I'd be happy to listen!

Post by: Westfalia Chris on August 30, 2015, 04:15:26 PM
Hi all,

some more stuff I painted over the last few weeks! These are a real "blast from the past" as we started out our "gaming history" with these almost twenty years ago. I recently found them when doing some housecleaning at our parents' place. The "small stuff" are all Heartbreaker miniatures from the early nineties, the dragon is the "Great Green Dragon" from Grendel, still available.

An evil knight:

Four "lawful" knights (to avoid the "good/bad" dichotomy for once):

These are huge figures, easily 32mm size. I plan on using them for "tank" roles for dungeon crawls and heroes for skirmish scenarios, and one or two of them will get a retinue of Fireforge figures.

A little demon, sculpted by Kev Adams for HHG back in the mists of time.

I think this one is still available from Ral Partha Europe. A rather fun figure, although I struggled quite a bit to find a scheme, then settled for a bog-standard saturated green.

And finally, the dragon. Here, the choice of colour was very straightforward - I wanted to emulate an olive-green scheme I had seen many years ago in a dragon illustration by Wayne Anderson. Wings are a bit clunky, and I had to re-sculpt one of their tips which had broken off sometime in the last two decades.

A charming figure, though, with lots of heft and the right mix of volume and detail in the right spots. I'll add a large oval base as with the other dragons at a later time, but for now, it'll have to huddle on its rocky outcrop.

Still undecided on how to do the zombie dragon. Now looking into a mix of mottled greens, bleached out and moldy.

Thanks for looking!
Title: Re: A Fantasy Miscellany (2016-01-24): Great minotaur and resin buildings
Post by: Westfalia Chris on January 24, 2016, 04:43:04 PM
What then, a new year and some additions to this project. I recently came into possession of some lovely resin items which were great fun to paint up.

First off, an Ilyad Games "Gaurochs" minotaur. Huge lump of resin, great casting and easy assembly, though. It was missing the original axehead, but since I wasn't too fond of it once I had identified the manufacturer and Googled it up, not too big a loss - I replaced it with a mace-head made from a cotton sphere impregnated with superglue plus some points made from hard PVC.

I added a scratch-built base from cardboard, plastic and Milliput to bring the strangely-shaped base (an irregular octagon of sorts) to a useable size and style (70mm diameter round).

The figure's pictured here with another Heartbreaker knight (32mm scale, roughly) for size. A huge piece of kit which would work well as a chieftain for a feral minotaur band.

Furthermore, I received some of the wondrous Tabletop World resin buildings via Miniaturicum. Those are extremely nice if you like the style, but it's the casting that has me marvelling at the makers' skill - there's practically no assembly involved (the cottage below comes in two pieces, the merchant's house in five). Just washed them, primed black and worked it up from there using reddish artist acrylics of various shades to emulate a red sandstone and brick look to break from the usual greys and browns for fantasy buildings.

I've still got the Blacksmith's Shoppe and the Coaching Inn lined up for painting. I'll add some finishing touches to the buildings once I get the set completed, but this is pretty much the style I was aiming for.

Thanks for looking!
