Title: Dungeon Crawl Project: More Pics Added!
Post by: Funghy-Fipps on 03 October 2011, 12:16:40 PM
THE blame for my abiding addiction to this peculiar hobby of ours may be laid squarely with HeroQuest, which I received for Christmas '89.  Prior to this I had read The Hobbit, the Chronicles of Prydain and seen Willow at the cinema, so I was already pretty far gone up the fantasy path .  Consequently I've always had a soft spot for fantasy gaming and, in particular, the classic 'dungeon bash'.  After seeing various inspiring scenery and miniature projects by the excellent members of this forum over the preceding year and noting that Red Box Games were having a rather generous sale I recently threw caution to the wind and splurged out on some stuffs to kick-start my own DB project.

Having also owned Advanced HeroQuest I decided that modular corridor and room pieces were the way to go and decided to use pre-cast Hirst Arts Flagstone Flooring (sourced from here (http://www.maljazar.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=20&product_id=56)).  Each pack contains enough pieces to make 12 1" squares so I decided that each floor section should contain, erm, 12 squares!  They are based on 3mm thick foam PVC from Antenocitis' (http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/3mm-black-foamed-pvc.html).  More pieces and doors will be added in due course, including some cracked tile room sections.  Oh yes, and I've also just bought some furniture from Thommy at Thomarillion, who is an absolute bloody star.  Apologies for the shite photos, but they were taken with a borrowed camera as I'm currently in the process of sorting out a new (decent) one.

Miniature-wise I'm using a core of Red Box with monstrous additions from Ral Partha, Otherworld, Heresy, OOP Citadel et cetera.  Here's what I've managed thus far:

Next up is more Red Box Goblins and some Ral Partha Trolls and Ogres.  Some Ebob spiders are also on the way.

For rules I started with SBH but felt the random activation didn't somehow suit the dungeon bash ethos/atmosphere and have ended up modifying the hell out of Coreheim (http://www.coreheim.com/).  It works an absolute treat and I've managed to work in Races, Classes and Advancement in true classic DnD fashion to add longevity.  Comments and critiques are of course welcome!

Looks good.
I see someone else is fond of the Red Box Games models... :)

I would like to see some more irregularity on the dungeon terrain. Maybe adding some straws of flock or just plain sand would do it on some of the dungeon tiles.
But I guess you allready started to think in that direction.

Great start.

Looks like an impressive start.  :-*

Can we see a picture of some of the models on the floor sections to get a sense of how they look together?

You're off to a great start. I especially like the goblins. I'm looking forward to seeing more. And to hearing about your Coreheim modifications.

Great start, Mr F-F!

Nice board pieces and great work on the figures.
I agree with Engel about a bit of variation, but you have plenty of time to do that later.
You mentioned furniture for your board; Dolls house furniture in the right scale can be very cheap and allow you to spend the pennies on really important stuff, like miniatures!
Check out this link for cheap dolly-chairs etc;

http://www.mollys-house.co.uk/1%2B48th+Scale+Furniture+PWNETXdBVE02a25jdmRXWjBGMlk

It is plastic, hence the low price, but it paints up quite well.

A friend of mine has been threatening to do something similar for Warhammer Quest or Descent but never actually does anything about it.
I will show him your work and shame him into pulling his finger out!
The slacker!

Great work, will be watching your progress with interest....

Despite missing the obvious dungeon accessory -  a bookcase full of goblin and ghoul reading material - it is a worthy dungeon indeed.  Woe betide any fule who enters...

Well, all adventurers have to start somewhere, Phreedh old fellow.  Actually, I just the other day received this (http://www.solegends.com/citc/c29chaoshydra.htm) multi-headed monstrosity from some poor soul on ebay (in mint condition, too!).  He's now stuck together, green-stuffed and awaiting an undercoat as I write.  Mind you, I don't intend to confront newbie heroes with the blighter!  He'll have to wait in the wings for a bit until they're capable of handling such a ferocious creature.

Thanks for the tips re. furniture, Mason.  I was going to build some tables from balsa scraps, but cheap read-made alternatives are even better!  As I said, I've already ordered some bits from Thomarillion (a couple of bookcases, a throne and a wardrobe).

I agree that the tiles do look a bit 'dull', but once they're populated with doors, furniture, chests and, of course, creatures they look much more interesting.  Also, when I get some of the Hirst cracked tiles flooring I can get creative and do some chequered patterns.

The Coreheim mod is almost finished and I may upload it as a PDF when all is in order.  I have to say I'm really happy with how its turned out thus far.

Thanks for all comments and I will endeavour to add some updates shortly*.

*Please don't ask me to define 'shortly'.

What casting material are you using for your floor pieces? I've considered getting into the Hirst molds, but the dental plaster he mentions is OH! so expensive...

The project is looking great! I've a friend who makes dungeons out of Hirst molds...but he builds the entire room in sections, i.e. a wall section attached to a floor section in sort of an 'L' shape...lets him make larger or smaller rooms as needed.

I'm actually buying them pre-cast as I don't really have the workspace to fool around with dental plaster (which is a shame as one of my best chums is a dental technician).  They're pretty cheap to buy pre-cast and there're plenty of companies in the States who make 'em (see here (http://www.hirstarts.com/links/links.html)).  If you need a lot then it could potentially get expensive, which is why I've just stuck to basic floor-plans.  There are some really nice and epic Hirst dungeons out there, but most of these are beyond my meagre price and storage capabilities!

'Troll sat alone on his seat of stone,
And munched and mumbled a bare old bone;
For many a year he had gnawed it near,
For meat was hard to come by.
Done by! Gum by!
In a cave in the hills he dwelt alone,
And meat was hard to come by.'

~ Samwise Gamgee

I'd like to introduce two of my newest dungeon inmates: a couple of Bob Olley/Ral Partha Trolls.  I've always been aware that much literary and gaming 'fantasy' is derived from North-West European myth and folklore and so adore the convincing Scandinavian look of Bob's Trolls.  They really bring to mind the atmospheric work of artists like Bauer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bauer_(illustrator)) and Kittelsen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodor_Kittelsen).  Anyway, enough of me prattling on* and on to the models:

<img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ax7B_YUnrjs/TpGTgsMD0KI/AAAAAAAAAFw/806pw_movo8/s800/RedBoxMinisOct11%252520035.png" height="600" width="800" /> (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/HduvLEy8YA_tnLH7N38YDw?feat=embedwebsite)

I've also made some trap markers using Citadel undead shield bosses and Fenris clear bases.  These are to represent traps that have been discovered by adventurers, but have not been disarmed or are 'permanent' (pit traps and the like).

<img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-TmqxfuUBggo/TpGI6tPy89I/AAAAAAAAAFo/rK5Kj28L614/s800/RedBoxMinisOct11%252520027.jpg" height="600" width="800" /> (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/QITqbraEVEF_wmN1FeyG6A?feat=embedwebsite)

Next up are half-a-dozen RBG Goblin spearmen and someThomarillion furniture.  Stay tuned and, as usual, your comments are appreciated.

* You may blame Sam Smith's Nut Brown Ale for that...

That's right Phreedh, it's fossilised mammoth s**t.  Hurts like hell, I can tell you.

Just ordered a Otherworld Giant Toad, so prepare for a further random addition to the steadily expanding dungeon menagerie.  As I wrote earlier, next up are some RBG Goblins and Thomarillion furniture.

They are superb models and I hope you enjoy slapping paint on them as much as I did!

I thought I'd add another update to what seems to be turning into a log of sorts.  Last weekend I came down with a cold (a man cold, to be more precise, and we all know how debilitating those are, right?) so progress more-or-less ground to a halt.  Still I have bounced back in the interim and painted up the duo of Ebob Spiders that I received on Wednesday last.  These rather fragile models are without doubt some of the best over-sized arachnids on the market and at £4 a pop who can argue?  Certainly my arachnophobe girlfriend doesn't like 'em one bit, which is a good sign methinks!  Painting was easy: a mid brown coat with two successively lighter dry-brushes and a brown wash finale.  Red eyes add a splash of colour and menace.

<img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Ef3bHVl80QE/TqQK6605qDI/AAAAAAAAAF4/xh28Keo94Qs/s800/EbobSpider1.png" height="611" width="800" /> (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/IoUkMsMH2ihhou35uq060w?feat=embedwebsite)

Here's a picture of one of the beasties in actions to give you an idea of scale.  Note Thormarillion bookcase in the background and rubble piles to represent dead-ends and where falling rock traps have landed (these are simply broken Hirst Arts pieces and cat litter glued to 3mm foam pvc).

<img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BPFoxLMo3_c/TqQNMNvwNoI/AAAAAAAAAGM/QFQYbeHl7Qk/s800/RedBoxMinisOct11%252520050.jpg" height="600" width="800" /> (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/CdasAXa4XFqw6E0OwEm00g?feat=embedwebsite)

Looking forward I've finished three of six RBG goblin spears and have an evil wizard and twelve RBG 'orcs' on the bench.  Oh, and it's my birthday next week so I'll be getting some more bits and bobs then, too.  Stayed tuned!

A quick update!  Finally varnished the six RBG Goblin spears and took some snaps for your approval.  Lovely models if a little taxing on the eye to paint.  Expect Giant Toads, Slimes and more in the coming weeks.  I'm also currently eyeing up some Splintered Light Gnomes (http://www.splinteredlightminis.com/gnomes.html) as a rather more unorthodox dungeon opponent.  What with that and the new RBG undead range (which Tre assures me will be significantly added to before Christmas) where will this madness ever end?

I do hope not - I'm enjoying this thread hugely, and the kick it's given to my similar project. It's also costing me as I've just received the Bob Olley trolls (+rats, +wolves  ::)) fro Ral Partha, and now those spiders are whispering enticingly to me, as it were!

After some problems with my computer (the PSU perished) which led to almost three weeks without the internet ( >:() I have finally returned to the fray and have plenty of new dungeon-related nonsense to share with you.  First up are a couple of Ral Partha Ogres.  Given that Ogres are essentially large, brutish people I decided on human skin tones (it also helps differentiate them from the Trolls I did earlier, with whom they share more than a passing resemblance).  Anyway, these fellows should provide our heroes with a considerable challenge in the melee department!

Next up are four Red Box 'Orcs' (Tre called them 'Bonebacks').  Certainly some of the most characterful greenskins I've encountered and a blast to paint, which is just as well because I've got another eight of the buggers to go (all different variants, of course)...

An Otherworld Giant Toad.  Not much to say about this beasty other than that it's surprisingly hefty and a really lovely mini!  Top notch dungeon fodder!

An 'orrible 'Giant Worm' thang from C-P Models (sculpted by LAFer George/redshadows).  Repulsive.

And lastly a slithering green Slime from Reaper.

Plenty more to come and maybe even some perilous quests to relate, too! Thanks for taking a look.

More lovely minis, Mr F-F!

I like the way that you are using a mixture of different companies and still managing to make them all work together really well.

My favourite is the Toad, but those Orcs look great too.
The effect that you have pulled off with the slime is fantastic as well!

Except for the spots in the dark brown splodges it is, in fact, dry-brushed.  I've recently taken to painting all the highlights first (whether dry-brushed or not) and washing at the end to give the models the illusion of being clean and blended.  I have to add that the detail on this blighter, as on all OW minis it would seem, is superb and lends itself well to my slap-happy approach (which is just as well!).  I'll certainly be picking up more of their wares over the coming months.

I like them! I'm afraid you've tipped me into a further purchase from Ral Partha to get those ogres - they're perfect! As said already, the slime and toad are also particularly cool, but the green shades on the skin of the 'orcs' are very satisfying.

Nice stuff - I've been ammassing various bits for a dungeon bash project myself - mostly minis, am moving onto scenery soon, and am thinking on rules particularly...

I've looked at the fantasy trip (not for me), and advanced fighting fantasy... but am intrigued by what you mention about modding the coreheim rules - would you be prepared to share these? (If so I'll drop you a pm)

keep it up.

Thanks all.

I like them! I'm afraid you've tipped me into a further purchase from Ral Partha to get those ogres - they're perfect!

Ral Partha certainly have some excellent and affordable wares for the old-school fantasy gamer!  I love browsing through their site as I always seem to stumble upon some new strangeness that get my juices going (if you know what I mean).

I've looked at the fantasy trip (not for me), and advanced fighting fantasy... but am intrigued by what you mention about modding the coreheim rules - would you be prepared to share these? (If so I'll drop you a pm)

I've almost finished writing up my 'own' rules having play-tested them to satisfaction.  As I wrote earlier they're based on a mish-mash of Mordheim, Coreheim and Advanced HeroQuest.  I'd be happy to send you a PDF version, but please bear-in-mind that they're work-in-progress and still need a fair bit of editing!  Also, I've yet to write up the magic items and Cleric prayers...

Apologies for getting to the party late - not sure how I missed this thread - apart from not being around much lately...  ::)

Cracking project you've got here - just read from the start and it sounds like I was drawn into fantasy in a similar manner - although only got a few games of Advanvced Heroquest in on the copy my old mate owned.

The dungeon tiles are looking great and I'm liking your choice in minis - I have the other variant of the Otherworld toad sat before on my painting desk as I type! Ral Partha and Redbox are obviously companies I should check out if I can ever kick my citadel habit...

Anyway - Top Work!

Cracking project you've got here - just read from the start and it sounds like I was drawn into fantasy in a similar manner - although only got a few games of Advanvced Heroquest in on the copy my old mate owned.

It's funny how many of our generation were introduced to this pastime in more-or-less exactly the same way (id est, HeroQuest and/or Space Crusade).  I take it you're a lover of fantasy literature, too?

Not much to report at the present as I've been working on a gaming board over the weekend.  Here's a couple of Ral Partha giant Stag Beetles I finished last week:

Well I do have a fairly large library of Fighting Fantasy and Lone Wolf game books if that counts!

Mind you - apart from Tolkien, the odd bit of Alan Garner and the Conan novels I don't actually read a great deal of fantasy literature - Arthur C Clarke and Zombie novels seem to have tempted me away!

Sadly rulebooks like Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd and 2nd ed. feature quite highly on my reading list...  :D

Nice beetles - I shall have to come back here for inspiration when I get painting my gribblies - got a load of the old citadel creepy crawlies which should be a nice strain on the eyes!

Great new additions since last I stopped in here. The bonebacks are great and I dig those Schwarze Auge beetles. I eventually went with the prepaint D&D ones (heresy, I know) but these tempted me.

Well, that was a seriously long break.  I haven't really touched anything gaming related for a few months, but after rummaging through my paint-station-hideaway-desk-thing over the weekend and unearthing some of the cool models I'd amassed for the Dungeon Crawl Project I knew the time was right to dive right back in.  And here's today's effort:

I know: 'not more freaking Bob Olley', you're thinking, but I really can't get enough of this stuff.  Hopefully I will get more done over the coming weeks/months/years/decades (delete as appropriate).    Oh yes and my rules - By Might and Magic - are nearing completion, too (or, rather, they were when I put them down about six months ago...).

Being a fellow Bob Olley tragic I am really not at all bothered by you posting this miniature!!! Great work!  :-* :-*

Very nice stuff on the whole thread! Being a hero quest and RPG veteran, I'm easily tempted by dungeons.

I have some of these minis myself - the stag beetles, the heresy giant slugs and the RBG goblins. All great miniatures, and all unpained, of course. I also like Olley's giants/ogres/trolls and toyed with the idea to get some, but I went with Otherworld for ogres and Reaper for trolls.

Keep it up!

Welcome back!

Another great addition, and you wont hear any complaints from me about Bob's works.
Love it!

Yet another Olley mini (from Ral Partha this time).  This guy is basically carrying a ballista, which is pretty nasty.  If you get hit by a bolt from that thing, your ain't getting back up for damn sure!  I can see him causing all manner of problems for our heroes.  Anyway, I've got two more Trolls to do and that's it Olley-wise (unless I buy anything else, of course...).

For most of this thread I've been banging on about the dungeon crawl rules - now provisionally titled Cavern Crawl - that I've been slowly putting together.  These started out as a straight mash-up of Mordheim/Coreheim and Advanced HeroQuest, but have grown over time into something rather more original.  They are still somewhat rough and there will doubtless be typos, repetitions and omissions that will cause the reader to scratch their head (in which case contact me!).  Also I have not completed the prices for equipment and the Prayers need sorting out (amongst other tweaks), but as the basic rules themselves are now written up in their entirety I thought I'd share them in order to garner feedback and because some of you have expressed interest in the past.  Anyway, here's the link:

Cavern Crawl (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByE36M8vP7cJTXFoQjZ4QzNCelk/edit#)

Bear in mind that my intention with CC is merely to devise a serviceable set of rules with moderate character development et cetera for personal use and that I am NOT looking to publish these rules, but to merely share them with interested and like-minded persons.  Let me know what you think!

I've downloaded them for a quiet moment. I'll drop you a PM with my thoughts when that quiet moment finally comes!

Initial impressions are that it looks good; a nice balance between being streamlined but still having a bit of 'crunch' with the stats and equipment lists. Well done for finishing them, my rules are still languishing, 75% done  ::)

Loving the Bob Olley guys - great stuff  8)

Will have a read of your rules - got a set of dungeon adventurers lurking in the lead pile who could do with a coat of paint and an outing some time this century!

Some new evil types for the dungeon. An OOP Olley's Armies Troll and an OOP (I think) GW Saruman. If required more details are provided on my worthless blog (http://drumsdeep.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/little-and-large.html).

Also, thanks for sharing your rules, I've enjoyed reading through them.  Refreshing to step away the old D6!
