I posted about the Weeping Angels that were coming free with the Doctor Who Adventures magazine and there was a huge amount of interest - plus we got talking about other Dr Who figures... So, here's a new thread. Please post up your pics of your Dr Who figures and we'll see how long we can keep this one going.
Here's my first pic. Two old school Daleks and an Emperor, all from Black Tree Designs...

Most of this has been posted about the forum before, but it's nice to have a collected thread. I'll try and get some more stuff photographed and posted soon.

Oooooh, this is a good thread.
I have'nt seen the emperor dalek until now, thanks Colin, and revford, thats a great Tardis interior!
This is just what I needed to make me start painting mine.
Im starting with an 11th doc and Amy avec Tardis.
Seeing Tom Baker and K9 here is making me consider risking another BTD order....
Anyhow, to kick me off heres those rubber weeping angels again for any who missed the dubious delights of my "throw paint at 'em" approach the last time around. Looking forward to seeing more in this thread.

These have been posted quite recently but for the sake of completeness and because it's raining here so difficult to take reasonable pics:
This is my Sontaran sphere for a scenario based on the Sontaran Experiment:
It's made from a couple of Xmas decorations, as suggested by AEG.
My DWA Sontarans:
I hope to arm them at some point
My flies and maggots for a scenario based on The Green Death:

The maggots are made from Milliput, the flies are converted joke shop flies

(Edit) - I forgot to add a picture of my FASA Doctors and Companions.
Cool idea for a thread. Ok I have a number of painted Doctor Who minis.

That fits. Eden Studios did some minis to go with their RPG of that name.

Yep, still produced by Ral Partha Europe. He's accompanied by Eureka Cultists - should be Morris Dancers and Gripping Beast produce Morris Dancers, but robed Cultists are much more useful for multiple genres. Still need a proxy Azal. May well end up being this guy:

Is there a tutorial somewhere on making that Sontaran ship? I remember AEG posting something about his, but can't find it.
Have you tried his blog? I know he used a plain bauble you buy to decorate yourself from a craft shop.
Mine was coated in a gold effect that I took off with wire wool. I drilled holes along where the door was going to be, cut out the doorway then trimmed and sanded it smooth. I made the door (slightly larger than the doorway) from another bauble and then cut the bottom of the bauble off at a slight angle so that it resembled the one landed in the Experiment. I used this hole to put the door in the doorway.
Hope this helps

I never did a tutorial, but it was quite easy... as OBR said, it's a plain bauble, with the door etched into the surface (I painted the outline I wanted first of all and then used a scalpel to scratch away at the surface, slow and steady - the final version has a nice crisp door frame and the door slowly drops down to it - if that makes sense).

Lovely, cracking job on Mr Davidson Davison!
Sorry, had to fix that! And yes, lovely job on the wet vet, particularly his trousers and the cricket ball, which I think I may just pinch for my job.
And please, guys - keep them coming! That way by the time I'll have mine ready I wont have to feel bad for joining the party late :D

Thanks! If you are painting that mini... please, please fix his feet with GS beforehand! They are badly sculpted (like, Rob Liefield bad). I had to fix them halfway through and it was a pain :(
I work at a vet school, so I love that he also played Tristan on "All Creatures" :)

Inspired by onebigriver and anevilgiraffe I decided to make terrain pieces for The Sontaran Experiment too. Here is what I have so far. The robot will come later.

Nice spacecraft. How did you get the cool "faceted" appearance? It looks great (I assume the original ship was like this, but can't remember at all).
It also sort of looks like a Transmat capsule, if you needed one in a pinch ;)

I've been meaning to finish my transmat ring for ages... >:(
some lovely work there No Such... where did you get your Robots of Death bases from?

some lovely work there No Such... where did you get your Robots of Death bases from?
Thanks, coming from you that means a lot :) The base is just some kind of cheap, soft metal mesh/grating from the dollar store, with plastic strips laid over it. Window screen would probably look just as good. Not sure exactly what I was going for with that look, either.
-
No Such Ageny I used a Christmas ornament I found at Wakmart to get that faceted look.

The original was more detailed but similar. Below is a toy from that episode of DW.

Excellent work! :-*

Not strictly what you are all looking for probably, but here is how I have used the Weeping Angels figures that came with the Dr Who Adventures magazine a while ago;

More pictures of them here;

You will need to scroll down, as they are at the bottom of the page.

Nice. A really atmospheric terrain piece, sure to unnerve your players even if it's not a Doctor Who game ;). And, a good use for what look like slightly... gimpy, but inexpensive, figures.
-
That is a great looking piece of terrain that would fit into many games. Great job.
-
These are all great! I really need to get cracking on painting my scant handful....

Thanks chaps!
I never complain about cheap figures, so long as they do the required job. No matter how 'gimpy'! lol
That almost looks like a chessboard which may or not have been the intention.
Did not realise that until you mentioned it, Bezzo! lol
It may work in the opposite way, though;
Anyone thinking that they can use the 'squares' as a guide for range guessing will be in for a shock.
It may be a 9x7 grid, but actually measures 10x8!
Could be fun if some of my players make the wrong assumption.... ::)

Nice custom minis. :)
-
Nice all round, just to say to those who don't paint their gravel, it often detracts from the finished piece as it gives a 'scale' reference, better off painting and drybrushing them to pull them down to 25-28mm if you know what i mean.
Apart from mr tennant and K9, very little who painted by yours truely, must get some of those I-daleks done at some stage but no gaming plans so whimsical idea really, too much not be painted that i could use for a start! ;)
The Commander
-
A Krynoid
Amazing! I love it. I just watched that episode online a while ago, and that mini is great at capturing the quasi-formless and vaguely Lovecraftian feel of the Krynoid.
The Family of Blood from the new series is also a nice group. I really liked that serial, it had a lot of heart and the idea of the Doctor hiding via self-amnesia made for a great story. You know you can buy the scarecrows to go with them, right? (from Crooked Dice, they're under Monsters and Villains as "Corn Dolls")
-
Gripping Beast also do scarecrows as well as the Family itself and the staff and students of the school...

Where's the Meddling Monk figure from, if you don't mind me asking.
It looks familiar but I can't quite place it… :?
-
The monk is from Perry Miniatures (http://www.perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?products_id=1786) . It was the only one I could find in a traditional Monk pose.
Not sure what i'm going to do with the other five in the set yet though.
-
Nice figs ;) Nice use of the Artizan Pulp range
-
Bump!... With my new Fourth Doctor paintjob:
Only one figure, I know... but it's all I have time for these days :P
-
If you're only going to have time for only one figure, you sure use that time well. Excellent painting. Love the base too. Fantastic work all around.
-
Only one figure, I know... but it's all I have time for these days :P
Nice, though. Poor dead Dalek ...

You've really captured the character's expression. I was going to say 'characteristic expression', but 'character's characteristic expression' sounds a bit stupid.
-
Cracking paint job. Bloody awful mini.
-
Nice, though. Poor dead Dalek ...
That poor dead Dalek was made from greenstuff, by taking Instant Mold impressions of an unpainted Dalek figure, BTW.
So no Daleks were harmed in the making of this production :)

Wow, you'd need three Doctors to face that horde of Daleks! I really should get some of the Heresy figures, they're really nice. Starting with Nine, perhaps my favorite from the new series.

I know it's a little O.C.D but I had to go for the full group ;)

Wow... that IS every Doctor (except Peter Cushing, I guess). Nice collection. How are the relative sizes of the Heresy figures versus the Black Tree ones? Reasonably comparable? Hideously gigantic?
-

:o I missed one!!!
Nice collection. How are the relative sizes of the Heresy figures versus the Black Tree ones? Reasonably comparable? Hideously gigantic?
They're close enough to work well.
I dont like the face sculpts on some the Black Tree ones but unless Heresy or Crooked Dice decide to make the other Doctors they're all thats available really.
-
In fairness, Cushing's Doctor is not remotely "canon", so I wouldn't worry about it :)
-
Does the concept of "canon" mean anything when Time Can Be Rewritten?
On the other hand, if you did Peter Cushing, you'd probably have to do Trevor Martin too (Doctor Who and the Daleks in Seven Keys to Doomsday). And Rowan Atkinson, Richard E Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Joanna Lumley (The Curse of Fatal Death). And the other Richard E Grant version (Scream of the Shalka). And the various Big Finish Doctor Who Unbound folk. And Terry Walsh in a bad wig. That way madness lies.
By the way, if you can find them, the old Citadel range had rather better likenesses, in a more caricatured style; but they were also smaller than their successors, and only went up to Peter Davison. The Fine Art Castings range, which also came out in the 1980s, aren't worth seeking out, in my opinion.
-
Hi there, I'm new around here but this is my kind of thread. :o
Some great miniatures on here, great basing and customs.
Just throwing some of mine into the mix.
I have the urge to re-do some of mine now, loads of inspiration here on the LAF.

LOL! Zygons. Where did they put their freakishly giant heads when they pretended to be humans? And their sea monster was probably one of the shi**iest looking bio-weapons ever fielded, even by Doctor Who standards. But still a good story, amazingly.
Thanks for posting these :)
-

Oh, I hear that! And for me the sizes are okay. The more recent Doctors have been on the taller side, so that's okay, akthough I suspect BT's Troughton may be a little tall, perhaps?
I find their attention to detail frustrating. Some sculpts are lovely - the McCoy you have (and me too) is a very good likeness. Colin Baker - not so much. But McGann to me is the worst by far - everything about it just screams 'done in a hurry!' to me. The hair is more afro than flowing, the hand position is... what IS he doing with his hands? And the costume strikes me as having some of the failings the Troughton and Bakers have - there's a 'gist' of the TV costume there, but not a great attention to detail. With the TRoughton and Colin Baker figures I've been active with green stuff to lengthen tails and lapels, and add in buttons and the like. With the Eighth Doctor figure I'm currently doing the same - and I think the extra detail (in this case buttons at the front and back, plus a fob chain and I'm mulling over whether to do a cravat pin as well) help bring a bit of life to a pretty bland figure.
None of which is to cast any comment on your fine work, by the way. That's a very nice collection, and it's great after all these pages to finally see an Eighth Doctor figure in a set 8)

Add to that, you need to base them all in a generation specific manner ;)

Basing has never good a strong point of mine.
I'm only just getting used to doing the painting again! :)
Maybe some day though.

There's lots of third party bases that can help you out.
Fenris bases or Micro Art Studio spring to mind.

She's one of that DWclix game, produced a few years ago
-
Yes, the range was Microuniverse, sadly not continued beyond the first half of series 3 [Martha] and a useful source of things you couldn't have done otherwise.
As indeed was the Black Tree range in its day, but as noted above the quality was VERY variable. Usually good on creatures, not so good on human characters, especially those lacking the visual "cues" of a distinctive costume. The Liz Shaw figure was possibly the worst.
It didn't help that I was still painting in Humbrols then, and I've been doing partial repaints, especially skin, to try to shake a bit of life back into them.
-
Great stuff and a great idea everyone showing off their minis. For free Dr Who Rules and lots more see: http://www.drwhominiatures.co.uk/dlmain.html

Wow! Those are all very good!
These are mine. I know some of the bases need some work, but other than that I quite like them. The sontaran is a converted Black Tree sontaran.
-
The sontaran is a converted Black Tree sontaran.
Nice update on that! I think you nailed the colour of the blue uniform well. Also, thanks for photographing Black Tree and Heresy figures beside each other, I've been wondering how well they matched up size-wise.
-
After starting this thread I have mixed feelings. Proud that it has had so much interest, astonished at how good all those collections are, and bitterly disappointed in myself for not actually getting anything impressive enough together to post on here.
;D
-
1st time I see this thread, and utterly amazed to see someone else with the Dr Who -Amy Winehouse combo! Need to paint them a.s.a.p.!
great stuff, very inspiring!
-
I've painted some more doctor who miniatures since my last post in this thread.
I rebased the doctor, and painted some other miniatures. Most of them are Doctor Who adventures freebies.
-
Loving this thread. I have a ton of who minis that I haven't touched. I need to get cracking.
Can someone tell me where I can see a comparison shot of the DWA Silence next to one of the Heresy/Crooked Dice Doctors? I'm not visualizing the scale very well.
-
Can someone tell me where I can see a comparison shot of the DWA Silence next to one of the Heresy/Crooked Dice Doctors? I'm not visualizing the scale very well.
I can't make a shot at the moment, but the heresy 11th doctor on my picture is about 3.4 cm, and the silence are 4.5 cm, including the thingie that the DWA figures are standing on.
-
Thank you! That definitely helps.

I love the way you painted your Silence figures. Now I want some, and I don't even like those villains.

Thanks! :)
Some of the figures are Doctor Who adventures ones, as you said, but most of them such as the slitheen, the cool cybermen, the human dalek and Mickey are from the OOP Doctor Who Micro universe game. The impossible astronaut is a converted horrorclix "evil cosmonaut" figure and the face of boe was scratchbuilt (the face was sculpted with green stuff, and the case built from various materials).

Wow! Great paint jobs --so detailed! Blown away by the scale of the pattern you managed to achieve on the 2nd Doctor's pants.

Human Dalek:
I really want to make a Dalek Sec conversion using the Black Tree "Jageroth" figure (http://www.blacktreedesign.com/northamerica/product.php?productid=23153&cat=2303&page=5) as the base. Too bad I suck at sculpting...
The Face of Boe:
Scratchbuilt? Wow. Really nice work. His chin looks less like a scrotum than the show prop, which is probably a good thing ;)

Not quite minis, but relevant all the same - link (http://www.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia/2013/01/doctor-who-knitting-circle-part-2/) :o

BUMP with a couple of things I finished recently, An old school Sea Devil from the Third Doctor's time, and an updated Sarah Jane Smith and K-9. I tried to fix Sarah Jane's hair to look more like her 2000's self's style, as the Black Tree sculpt had some weird hair that I think nobody has ever had in real life.
-
I know this isn't strictly a "Doctor Who" figure, but it kinda is/could be... So I thought I would post it, as all Dr Who related.
It should be in our webstore either this month or next.
-
... Wow. I suppose it's not technically "unique" (some convention cosplayers have done similar things in the past), but it's definitely a unique miniature! And I'd say it falls under the wider umbrella of "Doctor Who", so this was the place to post it :)
-
Love that Dalek Girl. Any idea what the price point will be?
-
... Wow. I suppose it's not technically "unique" (some convention cosplayers have done similar things in the past)
It's based on a friend of mine called Bexi, who cosplayed as a red supreme dalek princess, shes well known for it :)
Love that Dalek Girl. Any idea what the price point will be?
Not sure yet, it depends how much she weighs compared to a normal figure when cast. I would guess around £3.50 ish (dont hold me to that though!)
-
Aha! I knew I recognized that getup!
For the forum's edification, your pal posing IRL with a gender-bent Tenth Doctor:

Haha yeah that's her. The 10th Doc is a girl called Crystal, I kinda know her too, on Facebook lol

Just a heads up, the latest (out today) issue of Doctor Who Adventures has 12 iDaleks on the cover.

Hmm... I should get some Ice Warriors. I liked them as good guys, actually. Those Doctors are the old Citadel models, right? Great likenesses, though the heads are a bit too big for my taste.
ps: nice cheese store.

Those Doctors are the old Citadel models, right?
In the US they were released by FASA, but my understanding is that they got the scuplts from Citadel. They do have the giant 80's heads, but they have grown on me. :)

Sorry for the bad pics.

So..... how long after the 50th Anniversary special before we get a mini of Peter Capaldi as Number 12?
-
I guess as soon as his costume is revealed, someone will start sculpting!
-
Really like those two figures, CyberAlien312. The high-contrast paint style is fun (fun looking and fun to do), I usually reserve that for 15mm minis myself but here it really works on 28mm. Joekano, good to see the (old) Silurians make an appearance, you perfectly nailed their mucky colour.

Dunno, but I assume Crooked Dice or Heresy will be the places to watch :)

Some really nice stuff in this thread. Keep 'em coming, folks! :)

Speedpainted a few fiends for DWMG!
-
Ooh ah! I think I like the yeti best - his glowing eyes look great! But the Axons (?) seem kind of dark/non-contrasty to me.
-
Gel Guard, Omegas henchthings. I copied them shamelessly from a Who fansite showing pictures from the show. Working on Morbius now, Ice Warriors, Mummys/ies? and a heap more Daleks. I am churning these out to reduce the backlog as my painting has become so slow lately. Decided to try speed painting and I am enjoying it. First finished things since my SG1 troopers months ago. Thank you by the way, I like the yeti too.
-
Excellent stuff, seeing these makes me want to start mine.

Painted the 15 orange DWA iDaleks I had in the Victory colours:
Still got 50-odd to do but I'm doing them in a Dalek Civil War scheme similar to Germy's project.
-
So how do you paint Daleks without goong insane? I have ten old GW ones to paint plus Davros and I am putting them off as it looks really hard.
one colour base coat then very patiently paint in all the baubles? Also whats the best way to do uniform baubles ... brush flat to then and a swipe across or stab with a brush point first?
Any tips would be most welcome.
-
Last year I also painted a number of Daleks and a Davros figure, and I found out that (for me) the most effective way to paint them is to just get on with it - I did all the baubles one by one, but, surprisingly, it wasn't as nerve-wrecking as I thought it would be. I went for a new series look, and I just painted the Daleks in a dark golden base colour, gave them a quick wash of dark brown, and then did the baubles very patiently in light gold by making a circular motion with a thin brush across the baubles. Because of the wash there is a (in my opinion) nice dark shade between the light golden baubles and the darker basecoat. I then highlighted the upper areas of the dalek to get rid of the dirty look of the wash there.

I'm painting my Imperial Daleks right now (photos soon) and it is just a matter of taking your time and doing a decent job rather than rushing it. Can't say I'll be in a hurry to do too many more than I have lined up but they'll look good when finished (hopefully).

Good lord those are some, ah, "chu chu bong bong" ladies, as my wife would say.
@maxxon, I love your Fourth and Sarah Jane there. They're both nice sculpts (well, one more so than the other, admittedly), and your bright and fun paint jobs do them justice. Great job on The Scarf.
Also, that is one patriotic looking Dalek ;)

Thanks. I cheated a bit on the scarf, it's only two colors instead of three like the rest of the figure. Also, I should have bothered to check the source material first. The Doctor wears a red jacket in the early episodes with Sarah.
Ironically my TARDIS is the only one of these that has seen gaming use so far:
Most of the Daleks are actually painted by my daughter who I've been trying to get into gaming. She still prefers building doll houses, but we're getting there slowly...
P.S. The Dalek may be related to this guy:

After years of collecting I've finally started to paint some of my Doctor Who miniatures. First up on the table had to be the Daleks, this batch being the Imperial variety (their Renegade counterparts being next up. This also marks the first time I've used clear bases and I'm very happy with the result, now on to the pictures:

Some lively daleks on show. Thanks to Cyber and Giger on how to paint them. I shall get cracking on mine shortly. Do love your colour scheme and results Cyber. Imperial lot look nice to, very screen accurate.. Not my favourite looking daleks (colourwise) but nicely done.

I love these unique minis. Is that a tiny drashig on the Miniscope screen?
And Giger's Supreme Beings of the Universe are lovely. Gone cross-eyed from painting all those Dalek bumps yet?

Loving your minis Greenghost, so much character.
I've not gone crazy yet but I'm taking a break from the Daleks now (for the sake of my sanity) and moved onto something a little easier and quicker, Cybermen.

I did look at the black tree ones but ended up making my own due to price and limited poses.

The CD minis are a tad taller and more realistically scaled but not so much that they look out of place, I'll do a line up photo tonight.

Here's my first companions, of course to go with Doc 3. Unfortunately Liz is one of the worst sculpts I've seen but I've done my best with her, Sarah Jane wasn't too bad overall in sculpt or likeness (at least for these old minis):

Nice work on Sarah Jane's sweater. You used much more earthy tones than I did on my version, but I like it. I just wish there was another sculpt of her... or several.
Btw: Do you pin the minis on the transparent bases or are they just glued on?
-

Ta, I generally pin one foot if possible but if there is a decent surface area it isn't generally needed.

Here's my recent effort to do up some blue box i got from Hasslefree a while back
Nice paint!
Somewhere I have a Fenris one waiting to see some paint lol
It's the same model: Hasslefree sell the Fenris police box.
-
Great work on that TARDIS!
-
Nice blue box you have there :)
-
Damn that TARDIS looks nice. The gradational tone from bottom to top is amazing.

My finished Who minis thus far:
DWA Daleks. I still have about 100 of these (new & old-school types) that are primed and need to be painted. I was inspired by old style colors but also by the Dalek 2nd Empire webcomic, so some of the PJs will look unconventional to purists. But I wanted some variety.

Ice Warriors-I went for a lighter green, because the traditional dark, didn't stand out well. I also switched up cape colors on the leaders to give me 3 recognizable squads.

Nicely done!

Am I too late? Is this too old for a necro? I'm only...ten years behind :/ (Mods, please feel free to move or remove if this needs to be somewhere else).
Finally got around to finishing some of this stuff, more to come!

Grave digging of the best kind lol
Cool figs, and I don't even like Doctor Who. Thanks for posting them.
-
Fun looking back through this thread, characters from before Chibnall and neo RTD flushed it down the toilet. >:(
-
Fourth Doctor will always be my favourite, it?s how I was introduced to the low-budget camp that the show was - loved it for how much they could with so little!
-
While I'm aggravating people on a zombie thread... :D
Got some Daleks off of Etsy. Gonna paint four of them sort of similar to the Genesis of the Daleks color scheme, but thought I'd convert a couple into Dalek Ironsides...

Fantastic figures Talysman. I do think that the 'Earthshock' 80's cybermen were probably the best Cyberman design they ever came up with - I like the modern ones but I do think they run a close second to the 80's ones. I used to have a fair few of the old GW plastic cyberman and dalek figures then got rid of them but I still have some of the Black Tree Earthshock Cybermen.

Well, here are some of them:
I divided what I have between the humans and their potential allies against the Daleks, anything that didn't really fit had to sit this one out.

Blake's 7 Fed troopers, Ice Warriors, Silurians, Sea Devil and Mechonoids against the Daleks, it was at this point that I realised that I have to print out the stat cards so I know how to play easier.
