Hi there
Our Danish homegrown ruleset for WWI miniatures air combat has for over 10 years lived a silent life as there has been no suitable plastics minis that would work with our 4 foot carbon fibre flight stands.
We are currently translating the rules to English and we will publish the core rules and some missions as a free pdf in about two months time.
And we are working with a pair of 3D designers to produce a range of 3D printed miniatures available through Shapeways (a 3D printing service):
The first Sopwith Camels has arrived (http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic1120469_lg.jpg)
http://www.shapeways.com/model/346402/1_350_sopwith_camel.html?gid=sg85287
Also available is an SSW D.III:
http://www.shapeways.com/model/364530/
A Friederichshafen G.III bomber:

http://www.shapeways.com/model/364461/fdh_giii_in_1_350th_scale_in_clouds_of_glory.html?gid=sg91179
And a lot of other planes are coming soon: SPAD XIII, SSW.DIV, Albatrosses, SE5as, Pfalzes. All major types in the period 1917-1918 will be covered as well as some exotics such as the Roland D.VIb.
More on the game and heaps of photo rich session reports at the Geek:

Great looking planes. Nice to see that your rules are being translated to english, and I am very fascinated with your 4 foot carbon fibre flight stands.
Overall it looks AWESOME!

SHOCKED.
Gonna make some shapeways build too, asap... :P
EDIT: Any ruler for a size comparison? Just to understand the actual size... :)
Thanks!

Any ruler for a size comparison? Just to understand the actual size... :)
If you look at the pic with the green cutting mat there is some white measurement squares. Those are 50mm X 50mm. That means that a single seater like the Albatros D.Va has a wing span of about 23mm. The Pfalz D.XII has a span of about 27mm. The bombers has a span of just about 70 mm.
Thes pics say a lot: (http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic924151_lg.jpg)
And here you can see the Centimeter/Milimeter grid:

Simply Awesome. are the tanks 3d printed as well?
-
No, but it would be easy to make them as 3D prints.
The tanks are cast in 2 component resin in a mould made from this styrene model:(http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic534898.jpg)
Here they are with infantry made from Hasegawa 1/350 ship crew:
In the future we would no doubt print them instead.
-
You know? you can do MAGICS with styrene, i'm shocked!
Not talking about the level of detail, but the ability to semplicize much more complex shapes in something so clean and effective!
I totally love that!
-
So you're the guys behind Kampfflieger models? Lovely stuff. I saw these models on Shapeways and thought they would be great for ICOG lol
Will keep an eye on them.
-
Hi Nuno
Yes, we communicate with both Kampfflieger and ColinWe (http://www.shapeways.com/shops/wow (http://www.shapeways.com/shops/wow). Producing 1/350 at a high rate - with more good stuff on the way.. What we have to deliver is some rules in English so there will be a demand.
We will have a rough draft of the UK ruleset finished by end December if anyone would like to read and comment? We would relly appreciate it. When the UK ruleset is out, we will offer it as a free pdf download and the Danish language version will be terminated.

Hi Svend,
I'm really looking forward to try the rules. Have been trying to convince a friend of mine to get on this project but no luck so far but there are other club members that may be interested though.
I'm an arquitect and have a longtime experience in 3D design and model terrain and have a friend in the RC models business that can provide carbon rods at a good price so things are looking good.
I've been toying with the idea of using Shapeways for a couple of projects but now I need to find/make decals for the planes...
Cheers,
Nuno
-
Hi Nuno
As a way to start out i would suggest: Buying a couple of planesets on shapeways - Albatroses and Spads for example. Paint up a couple of flat boards in green and try out the rules with friends and the club.
As for rods - They are easy to get by - plenty of suppliers like this:http://www.aeroshack.co.uk/shop/gbu0-prodshow/CFR_1-5mm.html (http://www.aeroshack.co.uk/shop/gbu0-prodshow/CFR_1-5mm.html)
Prices around 2 € apiece. You will need around 10 for a big combat.
As for decals - others has asked and here is some links:
Doms decals 1/300-1/600 scale:https://sslrelay.com/www.domsdecals.com/sess/utn154ed943a33380b/shopdata/index.shopscript (https://sslrelay.com/www.domsdecals.com/sess/utn154ed943a33380b/shopdata/index.shopscript)
http://www.i-94enterprises.com/decal_selection.htm (http://www.i-94enterprises.com/decal_selection.htm) They insignia in other sizes suitable for example bombers and two seaters they also has some very neat letters, symbols and checkers usable for a lot of neat detailing.
Doug Baumann has custom made his very neat lozenge patterns for 1/350: http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/db-decals/52802-lozenge-more.html (http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/db-decals/52802-lozenge-more.html)
We will design a sheet with numbers and squadron insignia (for example french Storks and Cockerels and German personal pilot insignia) with Doug when we get to it.

Mighty tasty. That's one of those must do projects for 2012. I've downloaded the rules but it's a pain to translate. ;D

Just noticed there are no pilots on the planes. Is it possible to put them or the head is too fidly to print?

Good point. I think it is tradition from plastic kits. It is too late now anyways as over 20 different models has been designed.
I think it would be easy to take these: http://www.hyperscale.com/2009/reviews/maritime/goffygfs007reviewse_1.htm
And use the head and upper torso....
These guys could be used as gunners in two-seaters or bombers..

Fujimi also has crew figures but the resin ones above looks more detailed: http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/misc/fujimi/350-fjm-figs2/fig-review.html
-
Nice. You've got all the angles covered :D
I'm thinking of using clear round sequins for propellers (http://www.simplysequins.co.uk/5mm-flat-round-crystal-clear-sequins-545-p.asp). What size(s) do you suggest?
-
Sequins is a good idea and they look great when mounted. For a fighter aircraft the propellor would be around 7,1(Spad XIII - 7,4 mm (Camel). For a two seater i guess 8 -9 mm.
You can also use a leather hole punch tool in the right size and make the sequin your self out of a sheet of overhead projector film.

The fabulous Hansa-Brandenburg W.29 seaplane - A worthy adversary to the Felixstowe flying boat
Zvezda and ICM have a few 1/350 scale battleships and I'm curious to know if there's any real gaming possibilities of using them. Was there much plane-to-ship action? Where can I read more about it?
-

There was different activities involving ships...
The first succesfull torpedo attacks were carried out by German twin engine flying boats and British Short 184 flying boats (hopefully we will have one of these) in 1916.
in 1917 and to the end british F.2 Felixstowe and american Curtis flying boats patrolled the channel area looking for airships and u-boats.. They were armed with bombs and heavy MG armament in order to attack he subs. Subs could not emergency dive at that time.
Their main adversaries were the very able German two seat seaplane patrol fighters: W.12 (coming soon) and the later W.29.
We are writing a mission for these where 2 Felixstowes attack a stricken Sub being aided by seaplanes. We use this model:
http://modelingmadness.com/reviews/misc/ships/ger/bodilyu35.htm
Also 1918 saw two succesfull carrier strikes: A Camel took off from a lighter being towed by a destroyer and shot down a Zeppelin and 5 Camels took of in the very epic Tønder raid: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tondern_raid
Hopefully we wil also get Colin to produce a small armed trawler and a Gunboat in 1/350 in order to make some more variety in possible missions.
I could be fun to make a coastal campaign as both sides fielded both seaplanes and flying boats as well as ordinary fighters in the channel zone making all types of work.. Harassment attack on each others seaplane stations, looking for enemy ship activities, anti zeppelin and anti-sub patrols, fighter patrols, artillery spotting as well as normal recon activities in the coastal front zone. The RNAS made bomber interception when the German bombers returned from bombing England (Sop. Pups vs. Gothas)

Just a short update:
The rules are progressing slowly, but steadily... Some chapters are in need of a revision, af few sections need complete translation, we need to translate the Cockpit panel and graphic layout is on the way. Expect a couple of months. But send me a PM with a mail and i will send you full rules chapters (ca 60% ) as word files, as a taster.

Oh boy... They keep bangging like popcorn! You should start a ICOG blog and post all that dispersed info in one place.
Those WIP models have a lot of grain. Are they made with FUD? In the Shapeways site FUD looks much smoother and detailed.
-
Svend,
How will you mount the bombers and such? Single engined planes are easy but the big boys pose a new challenge.
-
Hi Kingscarbine
The fuzzyness is a part of the production proces and it somehow differs from model to model. Some are very smooth. I however think i made and error by spraypriming. The procedure i think should be:
1: Wash off the supporting wax with hot (not boiling) water and dishwashing soap.
- This also soften the material som that eventual bent wings can be returned to their original shape. They will then retain the original shape.
2: Let dry and gently sand (with fine paper) any roughness on the flat surfaces and eventually scrape with a knife where needed. Drill out the nose mounting hole with a 0,7 mm drill. (it has been printed with a hole but need reaming).
3: Remove any remaining wax (it sticks!) by dipping the model in spirit.
4: Give the model several layers of thinned gloss or semi-gloss varnish - This will smooth out the fuzzyness.
5. Paint the model as normal - eventually after priming it.
Some more on preparing shapeways WSF here:
http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?7614-Compare-WSF-vs-FUD (http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/showthread.php?7614-Compare-WSF-vs-FUD)
As for the bombers and mounting. We have not tried mounting the new FUD bombers. I guess your problem is that they are so heavy that the tail will drop? But i suggest diffrent possible solutions:
Increase the friction between the nose mount piano wire and the carbon flight stand by
A) Sanding the piano wire where it touches the carbon with rough sanding paper or ..
B) Move the piano wire mount to the other side of the crimp tube (the hole in the crimp tube may be off set a bit and thus be tighter on the other side thus increasing tension)
C) Use another kind of rubber tube instead of the crimp tube - one that provide with more tension.
D) Coat the piano wire where it touches the carbon pole with something that provide more friction - This could be some kind of rubber or dry glue coating - For example superglue that has been sanded rough.
Let me know how any of these works out.. if none of them works then the clumsy solution: Make another mount beneath the first that will support the belly of the bomber...
- Svend
-
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm burning brain cells coming up with a decent solution... I'll ask my three-year old for ideas. lol
Have you tried PVA as a basecoat before painting? It could smooth and strengthen the surface?
-
In my search for air-naval scenarios I found this interesting article about operations in the Adriatic: http://worldatwar.net/chandelle/v1/v1n2/adriatic.html
This site has nice pics of planes: http://www.wwiaviation.com/seaplanes.html
-
In my search for air-naval scenarios I found this interesting article about operations in the Adriatic
It is an interesting theater of operations, but i unfortunately think it will take some time to get the 3D designers to scale those Lohners and Maccis to the rigth scale. There is still some of the basic planes (SE5a, Dr.I just to mention a few) that need to be produced. They will follow the next couple of months.
I will try diluted PVA glue (very thin solution) on the Felixstowes. it sound viable to get a smoother surface, but a couple of layers of varnish helps a lot too.
Within the next 3-4 weeks we will begin posting files on either a new blog or on icog.dk (currently hosting our current campaign scores ad missions in Danish).
-
No rush. There's so much already that the Adriatic can wait a couple of years. :D
Here you can find useful paper model ships but they'll need to be printed to scale: http://www.digitalnavy.com/html/downloads.html
-
Great find Nuno... Especially this one: http://www.digitalnavy.com/V108new/index.html
Would be great for a channel coastal campaign ..
- Svend
-
That's the one I wanted to show you. ;) I found more useful paper models in a couple of companies that sell 1/400 kits. http://store.jsc.pl/?d=katalog&k_id=1
This book seems very useful for ICOG players. Have you read it?
Dog-Fight: Aerial Tactics of the Aces of World War I
Greenhill Books | 2003 | ISBN: 1853675512
-
Need airships? http://store.jsc.pl/?d=katalog&k_id=22 ;)
-
Are these useful for costal operations scenarios? https://www.whiteensignmodels.com/p/Tamiya+1350+IJN+UTILITY+BOAT+SET+TA78026/12549/
-
Hi Kingscarbine
The Airship rules will be slated for a later date for translation, but the models you have posted would be very suitable for this as a paper model would be light enough to be used for a mission like this:
http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/581647/zeppelin-bitter-combat-over-the-north-sea-januar (http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/581647/zeppelin-bitter-combat-over-the-north-sea-januar)
And very soon the FE2b will be available as well allowing for a complete reproduction of this scenario.
The small boats looks suitable for making a seaplane station terrain board. We consider making one in order to connect our sea boards with our land boards.

Mirage Hobbys has a 1/400 V-106 German WW1 Turpedo Boat. The catalogue has the Polish (ex German) ORP "Mazur" and ORP "Kaszub" and a useful diorama with both. It will work as part of a seaplane station.

The harbour looks good and it should work fine in that scale.. As far as i can see the torpedo boat is around 2 centimeters too short as compared with a 350th scale model. The cranes and houses would look great as well. You would need to make the jettys in foam plates as the fligth stands cannot penetrate the styrene.
Another thing that should be converted is to make the ship hulls into waterline models.

:-[ Is that bad? It's almost impossibe to find one in 1/350. I suppose using 1/300 scale buildings is also verboten... Irregular Miniatures (http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk/) has some useful stuff (Trains, Scenics & Accessories).
This range is 1/200 but nice to look at: http://www.rodlangton.com/ww1/ships.htm

Nein, das is ja erlaubt!(allowed!) I am not a scale purist and i think using 1/400 ships and buildings would be very fine. I gives a better sense of altitude if ground terrain is a bit underscale. I think that 1/300 would make it look as if the planes are flying too low. Remember that the ground scale in terms of movement and fire range is 1/700 using large ships would then give you problems as it would seem like the range is extremely short for the MG as the ship would be 1/350 scale and MG range would be 1/700.
We are making the papermodel torpedoboat (but in styrene sheets) you linked to, at some point but we will scale the pdf to 1/400 in order to make a model that would look fine in a harbour as well.
Airships in 1/400 would work fine as well i think (but again, i think i would make them in thin styrene sheets).
As for buildings i do not think there is a reason to buy expensive buildings. I suggest making simple models from clay or balsa wood blocks. They look great when looked at from a foot away.
Trucks, Artillery guns and tanks will be available from ColinWe on Shapeways within 2 months i guess.
The church on this pic is made from balsa wood, the buildings in the village are made from ordinary brown modelling clay:

That is a very cool airplane!
I assume (hope!) the lozenges are decals? Please tell me that's not freehand painting!
They are hand painted - Same principle as these D.VIIs
(http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic692383_lg.jpg)
If you look closer you will see that the different colors are not hexagons bot merely blots. The effect comes from paying attention to keeping the pattern of individual colors and guiding the overall look by marking up the the rows on the wing with a thin lead pencil - for example marking the oblique rows where the dark blue dots (on the bombers) should be.
We have a set of 5-color lozenge decals from Doug Baumann but only in scale for scouts. But i am not looking forward to applying the to the lower wings...

Are the carbon fibre rods simply punched into the terrain or are there proper holes drilled. If they're just punched in (and if so, I assume the base is some kind of foam?), won't that eventually make mincemeat out of your terrain?

good point. The overall look is simply awesome, but i'm sad for the ground scenery! =)
-

The boards are made from ordinary white insulation foamboards (Expanded polystyrene 120cmx60cmx4cm). We just punch the rods, which are sharpened in that end, directly in and the boards are amazingly resilient. The flexibility of the foam also makes the holes punched close a bit again when you remove the mounting rod.
We made the boards in 1994 and they have been used for (literally) over 100 games and have been moved a lot of times in the back of a car. We gave them an overhaul last year - some new flocking, new paint and a bit of expandable foam to stiffen the backside of one of them and they are good to go. No reason to be sad... :)
Here they can be seen when they were new . . (and I was slimmer, had no kids/lots of time and Ace of Base was on the Billboards).
They look a bit more crisp, but then again it is 18 years ago (and the rods were made of piano wire, the rules were crap and the planes made of balsa wood and cardboard)...
- Svend
-
18 years... that shure it's a lot of time!
That's REALLY interesting, since i'm making to start an AERONEF project, and i might need the same solution! =) thanks a lot!
EDIT: Anyway, the battlefield looks much smaller than the planes (and i can understand why), which scale did you adopted?
-
EDIT: Anyway, the battlefield looks much smaller than the planes (and i can understand why), which scale did you adopted?
The scale is only a bit smaller but not at a specific scale. I would guess around 1/400-1/450ish - And as you have probalby guessed to give a better altitude impression and to have a "bigger" terrain.
In this pic you can see the city with 1/350 scale lorries, troops and guns.
and here the airfield:
and a Spad VII close to the church (SPAD VII span: 25 feet/ 7,8 meter).
An Aeroneff game (1/1200?) would be fantastic. and i think the same scale terrain would be good for a WWII ICOG style game using 1/700 scale planes (Pit-road makes a lot of these) and ships...
-
yay! what a wonderful pictures there!!!
Even though i'm always into hand modelling, for this scale i'm trying 3d modelling. the first pieces should arrive in 2-3 weeks.
that's my thread about it =)

cheers,
Jack
-
Hi Jack
If you move from heavy metal to 3D prints i really think you should consider moving to Carbon poles and foamboards. Imagine a terrain with a lot of altitude differences for the areronefs: Deep canyons with hill-top forts and big steel girder bridges crossing and combats taking place at all altitudes - Fast frigates covering the high level while cruisers supports troopships unloading troops and fast gunboats chase around in the ravines..
-
And some German bombers
This time from a new designer: KSND (aka Shane)

Rules update:
All core rules has now been translated and been edited by at least one native English speaking person (thanks 6MilPhil and ColinWe). We will now make the master document and start the graphical design. I have seen the visual style and it will look great.
For those of you who would like to have a look at the base rules in word format - Drop me a PM and i will send you the core rules.
We still aim at Easter as a release date. At that point we aim at having the core rules, 5-6 scenarios, heaps of cockpit panels, templates, links to planes etc. all on a shared website.
Later we will add full campaign rules as well as more special rules such as Zeppelins, bombing etc. Based on feedback we will probably also ongoing updates on the ruleset.
All materials will be free to download.

Great stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When are the English rules going to be available please?

Wow!
We are a bit behind on this project. Ordered some rods but they were out of stock and work on the terrain tiles hasn't started yet. Only good news is I have the planes and decals on my workbench.

Great stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When are the English rules going to be available please?
Were working on it! .. Not long o_o
More work than we had thought .. When we started translating we saw the opportunity to tweak a bit here and there,..
But Thomas (my co-designer) is making the grapical design on the final text files rigth now and says he only lacks the last 15 pages or so..
After the rules has been released we will make cockpit panels for all available planes (classics first) ..
Also: Fokker D.VII models coming up (don´t buy the test version on the site ATM than is more than 5€ for 1 model)...
-
Thank you
I eagerly await them!

Ruleset update:
There is a delay on the finishing processes ATM as Thomas, doing the graphic work, is currently working 60 hours workweeks on his day job (which is being a movie propmaker and set designer). He will soon be out of the work bubble and i will resume posting here. Please have patience. an updated previews will be available soon and hopefully we will deliver before long. Do PM me if you want a preview pdf copy (around 18 mb file size).
Meanwhile more minis are arriving on Shapeways:

These little models really intrigue me; I only wish I could have got my hands on them twenty years ago :)

Hi,
Just a heads up and a quick intro. Panzergrey is a team of architects working on 3D printed terrain items and other equipment for ICOG. We have a long list to cover that we hope to finish by the end of the year. We researched dozens of period photos to get the most accurate models for the Western Front. It includes village, town and industrial buildings, airfields, balloons and other useful stuff. First items are available at Shapeways:

There will be buildings for that too. We are a little behind schedule because the models needed some changes and tuning to make them as affordable as possible without loss of detail.

Also: new planes available:
The BE2C
“The B.E.2c is my bus; therefore shall I want.
He maketh me to come down in green pastures.
He leadeth me where I wish not to go.
He maketh me to be sick; he leadeth me astray on cross-country flights.
Yea, though I fly o'er No-Man's Land where mine enemies would compass me about, I fear much evil; for thou art with me; thy joystick and thy prop discomfort me.
Thou preparest a crash for me in the presence of mine enemies; thy R.A.F. anointeth my hair with oil, thy tank leaketh badly.
Surely to goodness thou shalt not follow me all the days of my life, else I shall dwell in the house of Colney Hatch* for ever.”
*on Google, “Colney Hatch” turns out to be a lunatic asylum.
The BE2 was used as frontline recon plane up to the end of summer of 1917 where it was shot down in droves. Indispensable as cannon fodder for the Albatrosses in a Bloody April scenario. Blessed with a observer sitting in the front seat and a very cramped field of fire for the sole MG. Very stable which is good for a training A/C but not for a frontline aircraft supposed to be unstable and thus maneuverable.

The BE12
A rather hopeless attempt to make a decent single seat fighter out of the hopeless BE2. Also used in home defence against Zeppelins. Good for: scenarios showing the technology leaps and also in Zeppelin scenarios.

More planes and other stuff:
First of all, at long last: The iconic Fokker D.VII .. The BMW engined D:VIIf version was one of the very best (if not the very one) combat aircraft of the war. Note that there is four models in the set despite the picture of only one. See the 3d image for a correct content picture. With this model ALL major single seater types from mid-1917 to the end is covered (and a lot of the types from mid 1916 as well)
