Title: Potential scottish BLAM event- MacLAM
Post by: oldskoolrebel on 06 November 2011, 01:38:49 PM
Good afternoon all,

On the road home from BLAM 2011, brimming with ideas and enthusiam for next year.

Additionally we're also seriously considering organising the very first MacLAM event... That's right the scottish counterpart to BLAM! We're wondering if this would generate any interest among the fine outstanding individuals of the forum. Perhaps BLAM is too far, and Glasgow would be easier to get to? We're also wondering what time of year people would be interested in... April? May? June? Any other month?

We already have an idea of a venue in mind; summerlee heritage museum- a very interesting industrial museum. Currently we're waiting on a quote from the museum, but if its cheap enough :D.

Also, if people are interested in running a game on some of our boards, they'd be more than welcome to... Yes even the zeppelin! This would hopefully cut down on the amount, people would need to bring... And maybe even encourage people to run a game  ;D

Let us know what you think

Cheers
Andy

That would be fantastic. There are direct flights to Glasgow from Arlanda as I recall and I have relatives there.

I'm in. ;D

Not sure on when, it's a hard one to call, perhaps march or June?

Would love to bring a game. Up too :)

Would Lord Summerlee be stocking his wicker man? Oh, no, that was Summerisle, wasn't it?

I'm in Tyneside, so Glasgow would be accessible for me.

Oh yes.  No further to you than the Southern Softies for me ;) and I am sure the hospitality would be top notch.

Thanks for the fabulous spectacle of the Aquanauts too - absolutely delightful

Yep. Glasgow is easy with SleezyJet  ;)

That said, persuading the Mem Sahib that I need to disappear for three long weekends to LAF events next year may be tricky...  ::)

But in principle, I'd love to, dates and passes permitting  :)

Bring her with you. Glasgow is supposed to be one of the best shopping cities outside London.
Twenty minutes away by train :D

Depending on the date, I would certainly be interested to. I should be able to fly up from either Bournemouth or Southampton.

I know I am certainly interested  (subjects to dates, etc) and the Rev and I will be putting the idea to our gaming group on Tuesday, as to dates all dates are equally good for myself, but I can't speak for the others - I am sure the Rev will be able to speak for them.

With the generous offer of boards for playing on I definately reckon we'll be able to bring a game or two along, especially as it means we don't need to rely on having drivers to bring a board up.

Big fat yes. I'll make it a long weekend and visit my unhinged cousins in Greenock while I'm there. I'll probably bring the girls with me too as the other half has friends in Glasgow.

Its an idea game for someone who needs to travel by plane; all you need is a green felt cloth and some dice- invisible lorry fights!

What games are usually played at these sort of events?

A variety of games are played at these events everything from pulp, vsf, gothic horror, scifi, etc

What normally happens is oind individuals bring a game. There are hard or fast rules but games that are under 2 hours long are the norm, in fact i wouldn't reccommend going beyond this- there are normal several games on offer and as we're like kids in sweetie shops we want to play everything. Game sizes are usually. Between two and ten Players but i prefer 6 its always a fun number.

You also need the stylised helicopters. They aren't invisible as only the cab comes away :)

Hmm, this looks like a model.....

Thank you for your input!

We're now looking to tie down a date.

March
April- Salute?
May- GLAM
June

How about Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd of June? It's the 'May' weekend in Scotland. If people where wanting to stay a bit longer I could easily organise a day trip similar to Captain Blood. This would need to be on the Monday rather than the Thursday due to work commitments! Just a suggestion. If anyone has any better suggestions please let me know.

Let me know what you guys think.
Cheers
Andy

And it will be deep-fried  ;)

Nah, beer is the one exception to the deepfried rule. Everything else is game! In recent history we've had an 1500 calorie deepfried shish kebab and a battered and deepfried pizza.

I should also point out that like the majority of scots I've never had any of the 'weird' combinations like the mars bar or the pizza (or the kebab). In fact until very recently the only place that I knew that sold the offending mars bar was a wee chip shop in the tourist village of Aberfoyle... and the only people I've ever seen eating it... yup you got it, tourists!

Now with that stereotype killed, I'm going to miser my money away, don my kilt, get riotously drunk on whisky and go hunt a haggis (or if I'm lucky haggi)
Cheers

A few general thoughts derived from past experience of organising events (wargame and otherwise):

a) NO date is good for everyone;

b) many of the people who make the most fuss about not being able to attend will not turn up anyway after you have kindly changed the date to suit them;

c) so, subject to avoiding things likely to inconvenience everyone (eg days in 2012 when Glasgow is hosting Olympic events, thus clogging up roads, trains and hotels), ...

d) pick a date that suits you the organisers.  The rest of us will fall in as best we can.

The kebab shop just along from my flat during my final year at Uni of Edinburgh (Babylon, opposite the Cloister bar at the west end of the Meadows) used to sell all the above to locals as well as us foreign students. Their lunch time school kids dinner was an eighth of a frozen pizza cooked in the deep fryer, with chips (salt 'n' sauce, naturally) and a can of juice (i.e. irn bru or coke). Madness!

A mate of mine also managed to persuade a chippy in Leith to batter and deep-fry his mcdonalds burger (including the bun  :o), but I'll admit that was a one-off  lol

Anyway, back on topic ->     games + being in Scotland = a good time for all  8)

Mr Steve,

Thank you for the advice, rest assured that it will be followed!

We won't announce a date until we've checked the venue suitability/availability, plus since its in scotland we'll want to make sure the brothers mac and myself can attend- sorry for being selfish guys but thats just the way it is!

But for further information, we've received a quote for the venue that we're extremely happy with. So now a wee visit to check the facilities and we'll get back to ya'll with a date.

Thank you for the offer. Generally speaking the LAM series of events are pretty much exclusive to LAF members; not really the general public. It may be easier to think of it as a meeting of friends to play games as a wargames show. Usually the whole affair is invite only.  :)

That said we're a friendly bunch.
