Inspired by the work on this board I have started to plan out painting up some of my cork city to use with repainted HeroClix and SuperSystem.
The city currently looks like this (4 x 4 foot board):
My intention is to paint the boards a very dark grey to use as a road surface and to make a park area to cover the open area outside the church.
Initially at least I think I could run a game using just one half of the board and a single street.
The plan is to start undercoating the buldings this weekend.

Don't forget to add the tents and protestors!
Actually, that's a thought. Does anyone make modern, pod-shaped tents in 28mm?

Fenris Games.
;)
You asked! :D

It seems to look far better than I expected with cork :o
Close look pictures wanted :D and details on material you used, technic, and speed ;D
Great work so far :)

Fantastic job, I was working on something like this myself, but I realized I lacked the storage space. ;D

I cannot claim credit for the build - I was lucky enough to be given the whole lot for free last year. They need a little more detailing and painting but that is all.
The buildings are all built using the Matakishi (tm) approved process as detailed on Paul's fantastic site here:

Really nice link ! It's very inspirating for my own project. It show clearly that you don't need incredible details that no one will see finally to make a nice overall city theme. The buildings are quite simple, but it works really great. Maybe it even helps to match the Comics effect style too.
See that gallery, impressive :

I think I'll use a mix of cork technic and plaster. Using plaster for detailed front wall, and cork for the other sides. With a nice painting job, it should do the trick fast, simple and effective.
Can't wait to see your own city painted :)

Looking forwrds to seeing how this develops. :)

I have spent this morning painting the first coat on all the brick buildings - 11 in all.
Couple of quick photos of the first 6:
Some buildings such as the shops and the hotel will have a painted front rather than just being brick.
Unfortunately, a lot of the buildings have the biro lines for mark up on the outside so I have to do two coats on the front and back on each building.
Now it has stopped raining I am intending to spray the Church, city hall and bank which will all be grey.
More later

Working great so far. Congrats ! ;)

Thanks.
Have now done the first two coats on 12 buildings for the basic work and managed to detail one building.
It still needs to be touched up, but here is a quick shot of it with two Heroclix repaints in front of it.

Really cool scenery :o
Maybe you could try some weathering ? But I'm not sure...Maybe weathering will destroy the "comics style" effect of color.

looks pulpy with little weathering too.

That sounds the perfect balance for me :o ;)

Nice looking buildings...
I managed to get some more painting done last night so have finished the basic painting on two more buildings and most of the bank. Still need to add some detail tiles to the front walls.

Haven't had much chance to do any work on the city due to Warfare and getting ready for the show.
I did pick up some packs of Steve Barber's streetlights and fire hydrants at the show as well as his newsboy and newsstand though...
The baseboard is painted and 4 buildings are finished. I'm hoping to get some more done tonight...

Black Hat: Do you have some links to the fire hydrants and street lamps you're using for reference?

Yes, available from Steve Barber here:

Under Prohibition Wars - no Pictures there...
I'll take a couple of pics of mine when I get a chance.

Here is a very quick picture of the streetlight and fire hydrant.

You get 4 lights and 1 hydrant in a pack for £4.00

Cool so far. :)

I need to build a similar set for my modular table, so I'm really interested in how your project turns out. It's lookign great so far. :)
-
Really nice and inspiring. Seeing so good results make me think twice about my own project method :o
Here the difficulty is to find these cork sheets. For now I didn't find any in local hardware stores.

Quick photo of the next 3 buildings - Bank still needs some tidying up...

And the next 4 buildings including Church and Hotel.

Just 4 buildings to go and then its onto vacant lots, backyards and some street furniture.

The buildings look great, but a little too "clean". Have you considered weathering them for a more "lived in" look?
-
I actually like the very clean-cut comic-book look as they are going to be used for Superhero games.
I will use them for Gangsters as well, but I think they will look fine.

These buildings seems to come from a classic comic book. Really inspirating, I NEED to find that cork sheets. I tried several hardware stores here (France) and never found anything but "poster-style" cork, really expensive, soft and...expensive lol
I agree about a little touch of weathering, but again the result is already great. I guess it depands of the style you want to keep : classic comic, or more modern/dark comics.
-
Cork tiles have gone completely out of fashion here in DK, it seems - but I guess the same techniques/templates could be applied to foamboard of the right thickness....
Very cute town/cityscape. For some reason, I have not yet played supersystem, although I have 3 painted supers, a super-villain and 2 groups of henchmen readily painted... :? One wonders why, as even my regular gaming buddy is much into supers.... ::)

On the other hand, we have to put up with screw-top wine bottles!
We all have to. Latest news is that screw-tops preserve the wine better (just a bit better than rubber 'corks').
-
Also, cork supplies are dwindling worldwide. :? As soon as they can figure out a way for aluminum to not effect the taste, wine will be shipped in that too.
The things you learn working in a Liquor Store... lol

Does Lambrusco count?

Does Lambrusco count?
Technically not, but the cork corks may apply to spumantes, too lol
-
Does Lambrusco count?
If you drink it from the bottle it probably does.

I've got these packs here also, but I don't think it's the product used for the Cork city. It's too thin and soft, and the texture is very crude. ???
but I guess the same techniques/templates could be applied to foamboard of the right thickness....
Yes, but you loose the interesting natural texture we can see on cork buildings. That texture is one of the major interests of cork building : giving a nice texture the easy way ( no need for textured paint or whatever). The cork is also (I guess) more durable than bare foamboard.

All a matter of availability. :)

Great looking buildings everyone!
