Title: Ghoulish Pickman, Einar Olafson´s Strange Aeons stuff (05/09/2013)
Post by: einarolafson on February 17, 2012, 10:40:11 PM
I´m going to post one painted miniature a day in my Strange Aeons related blog http://losingsanity-einarolafson.blogspot.com (http://losingsanity-einarolafson.blogspot.com). I´ll post miniatures from several companies, mainly Uncle Mike´s Worldwide, Black Cat Bases, Rafm, Tengu and every miniature I buy for my games.

The first is the Female Missing Link from Uncle Mike´s.

That´s the first thing every Strange Aeon player should do, the graveyard, it's a very easy way to prepare a gaming table or the main part for it. I have almost finished the Cript from Uncle Mike's, a lot of Ainsty Casting gravestones, Tegu models, Renedra's... and then some scratchbuilt ones. Cheers.

Thanks! I painted those freehand spots with a steady hand, pointed brush, paint with the right consistency (a lot of water in it) and patience.

Wished you lived near me, this would be a great looking set of models to play with.
Maybe we can rescue those Strange Aeons games played by posting movements and results every turn here.

Thanks, glad you like them. I have to say, I paint a lot of miniatures every day but these are being painted between orders (painting miniatures is my job) and I can’t paint one every day, so I’m posting a painted miniature a day, but not the same day I paint it. Sorry if anyone was thinking these are being posted as I finish them. I might finish a Mythos miniature a day but that doesn’t always happen.

Cheers.

Great paint jobs on all of these new additions.

You are certainly selling a lot of figures to me with your work.
Certainly better than seeing them unpainted on their own site. ::)

An order to BCB may be made very soon!

Great paint job on the priest. I like the lines on the suit.

English is my first and only language and I can barely speak it. ;D

I was just telling him on his block I got the Priest on order and in the mail to me....I wish they had painted versions on the BCB site, I think it would help in sales.

The model is great and looks great.

Thanks. I have got the Black Cat Bases one ready to be painted. Maybe some day I'll buy the Fenris one but I can't afford it right now. I have got the resin dead Mi-Go on the table. Please, don't get me wrong, I love the Fenris Games one, it is a fantastic miniature and when I can I'll buy one.

And today... this is the Black Cat Bases Avatar of Perversion (http://blackcatbases.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=437_612&products_id=3269). I like this miniature a lot. It's smaller than the Avolakia miniature but it is a different way of approaching this horrible being. I have included a picture showing both.

I´m planning to usem both in my Strange Aeons games. May be I´ll use the Black Cat bases as a less powerful Y´golonac summoning and the Avolakia´s one as allmighty godling.

What colors did you use to paint the model?

Started to post some pictures last night but my photo's looked like crap so I am going to have to reshoot the images.

Yea, I may have to grab a few from EM4 also on my second order. I am working on my stuff now and it is interesting. some stuff is to scale to things like Black Cat (some other minis I have) and others are just small compared to them. Like the Serpent Man in robes and the Detective with the Tommy Gun. I do also try to keep things in perspective that at least with human figures we are are not all the same size in real life so it makes me feel a bit better when I pass some guys in the hallway that are about twice my size (former football players).

What colors did you use to paint the model?

I have used Foundry and Vallejo Game Color paints and GW Devlan mud (Vallejo has a new kind of washes, they look the same that GW inks to me).

For the skin: Foundry Conker Brown 54A, Devlan mud, highlight with F. Conker Brown 54A/B/C
Wings: Vallejo Game Color Dark flesh, Devlan mud, VGC darl flesh, VGC dwarf flesh, VGC elf flesh, 50 % elf flesh/ 50% bone.
Wing dots: any very dark brown.
Head: Foundry Raw linen 30A, Vallejo Game Color 50% yellow/50% green inks, F raw linen 30A/B/C, Foundry Boneyard 9B (only some dots in higher places).

I hope that helps.

I´ll take some pictures of the Mi-Gos near human size miniatures for comparisson. I think that the eM4 Mi-Gos are the best because their small size but I´m planning to use the others too. They would be like ants or bees, so I´ll have Mi-Go soldiers, workers, nurses...

Cheers.

I had not realized the EM4 Mi Go were so small.
I like the smaller Y'Golonac as well.

I seem to remember Lovecraft saying that the Mi Go had ways of modifying their bodies for different jobs and environments, so this is keeping with the theme. :)

I noticed that some of EM4's stuff is very on scale and some things are very tiny. The Detective with Tommy Gun for example is small, but the adventurer with the rifle and shotgun both pair up to Black Cat's line just fine....the Serpent Men are very tiny also compared to other things as well.

I have taken this picture to show how the Mi-Gos work with Uncle Mike´s miniatures and Black Cat bases miniatures. From left to right: Grenadier/Mirliton Mi-go, eM4 Miniatures Mi-go, Uncle Mike´s Threshold agent, Black Cat Bases Hybrid.

Thanks!

Day 35, I have been preparing a Dagonite Kult for playing Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten. I'm still adding members (because I can't stop!!). This is a Four A Miniatures cultist (http://www.fouraminiatures.com/page2.htm), although I have replaced one of his tentacles with a Pulp Figures spare "hand with knife".

More superb paintjobs!

I love that motorbike and sidecar set, but how does it scale up with BCB and UM stuff?

I have four of those Four A cultists waiting for some attention. I will be doing some weapon swaps to make them more usable, too. They are such nice figures that they are worth that extra bit of work.

Please stop now, as you are making me feel lazy.
At least I got twenty SA figures based and undercoated yesterday.
Not sure when they will get painted though.....

I have to say 'Ditto' to that.
I remember the pics of the greens, but einarolafson's paintjobs really brings them to life.
Muuuust. Haaaave. Soooome!

I may just do that!
Starting my own thread may the kick up the Jacksie that I need to keep me moving.
It will most definitely not be a 'mini-a-day' thread, though!
So far, I have managed to assemble and undercoat a few Cultists and just over a dozen Agents/Operatives.
I will be setting most of my SA games in Blighty, though, as my existing scenery collection would best represent the British Isles or Europe, so I have quite a few figures with a British flavour.

I noticed that some of EM4's stuff is very on scale and some things are very tiny. The Detective with Tommy Gun for example is small, but the adventurer with the rifle and shotgun both pair up to Black Cat's line just fine....the Serpent Men are very tiny also compared to other things as well.

What you need to remember in respect to the dulwich detectives range is that they are 25+ years old and 25mm figures, so naturally they'll be out of scale to more modern minis.

Anyway...

Love those Mi-go, really nice colours, feel the need to go back to my all purple ones and cauliflower them up a bit! ;)

True, but some also fall into step nicely with my Black Cat figures....

I also try to keep myself in the mind set that not all people or creatures may be the same size also....

Sorry It´s too late to stop, ;) I have painted more than 20 miniatures (cultists and hybrids, and more coming...)

I would like to see more collections, Cults, Agents and Lurkers from other people. If several of us show their painted miniatures that would be a good way to see a lot of miniatures that maybe we don´t know and we can rediscover some of them again.

Thanks, I remember your thread about painting all those Lovecraftian miniatures, I saw those Grenadier Mi-Gos there and I felt I needed to buy some of them... so thank you!!

I will be setting most of my SA games in Blighty, though, as my existing scenery collection would best represent the British Isles or Europe, so I have quite a few figures with a British flavour.

That would be good!! Remember that there are several authors that set their stories in UK, Bulgary and some other places in Europe.

Cheers.

Same here, I love to see other people's painted miniatures (good or not so good, that doesn't matter). As soon as I've painted a model, I always post it somewhere to see what people think of it. I have two more painted ones that I still have to post, but that will be after March 31 because I've entered them in an online painting competition and I don't want to spoil the surprise. At the moment I'm busy with three Ghouls and a Ghost.

By the way, I love the squid headed cultist and the hooded one...again, great work and I enjoy watching them a lot.

They are all great and you have excellent painting skills. The choice of the miniatures is really perfect.

I regularly buy Black Cat Bases miniatures. Most of them are nice and well sculpted some are not but you really bring them to life and I agree that you should suggest Black Cat to use your photos in their shop.

Funny that others are saying the same thing I said on his blog long ago when he first started that he should as BCB to post his pics up of the figures to improve sales. I think it would have changed what I ordered...

Hi we will be putting some new pictures up soon, we are just waiting for Jo's holiday till we get a chance to do this, we have got some new photos for the web site done by a photo studio, but as it cost quite a lot to get a 100 photos done and we have over 2500 products it might be a while ;D.( I always prefer to get new sculpts with my spare money also)
Andres painting is fantastic and he has done a great job with these.

Andres, simply stunning. I haven't forgotten your offer from ages ago, will drop you a pm.

Thanks!! I´m very happy that you like them. Sorry if I haven´t posted any more miniature since Sunday but I´m moving house and we are having a lot of problems with the new house (the former tenants must have been shoggoth or something like that, I even think that they have left some kind of creatures in the bathroom), I hope that tomorrow a cleaning team (probably trained Threshold Agents) clean everything and fix the problems. I don´t even know where my pictures are so I need some more days before I post something but I´ll post a miniature for every day I have missed.

Great stuff! I love the farmer, he is well done! The Lovecrafts are great! I hate I missed out on so many of Uncle Mike's limited edition stuff. The coat on the living Lovecraft is amazing, great texture work.

Someone was to mail me the Santa but I never got it yet (may need to PM him again) and really missed the boat on the King in Yellow, Zombie Lovecraft, Fat Zombie and so much more like the Ghosts...sad panda!

I´m going to rescue some pictures of scenery pieces that I have made for Strange Aeons. Scenery Piece 1: I'm making a Strange Aeons Board based on the Tunguska event. The table would be full of burnt trunks, mud and some "weird stuff from outer space". This is the first piece.

Well, as you asked so nicely, I will. ;)
I have to paint him soon anyway, as he is the only 'good guy' that I have with a shotgun and I need the option.
He is going to be the Head Groundsman of the M.O.O.S.(E). estate, and as I have already dealt with the other two guys I will have to. The would get up to all sorts of shenanigans without having the boss around..... ::)

He wont look as good as your version, though... :'(

Wow, pure eyecandy again. I didn't even know Uncle Mike did a zombified Agent Lovecraft...great job on both.
The farmer is really amazing, such levels of detail...you could say that I'm quite jealous of your painting skills!
I love the idea of a Tunguska SA board...that first piece of scenery looks very good and most likely sets the mood for anything still to come.

Yea, limited editions I am aware of that I missed:

Crazy Santa with ax
Ghosts
Fat zombie
Undead Lovecraft
King in Yellow

Not sure if I missed anything else....I know the current Lovecraft is in the starter mini kit.

I am so jealous to anyone that got those figures, I sweep ebay at times to see if one will pop up...

I´m afraid that the answer is: yes, you´ll get to see his mutilated cows again ;)

I´ll post them again (sometime during the day).

Miniature 49, Dogs from Vendel (they are two but I´ll count them as one) and scenery item 2, the dead livestock.

I posted these pictures sometime ago in LAF but I´ll rescue several things to post them again during this week.

The little idol is from Black Cat Bases, set Cthulhu Sprue (http://blackcatbases.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=437_612&products_id=2627); and the dead animals are from Warlord Games set Dead Livestock (http://store.warlordgames.com/dead-livestock-1869-p.asp). They have been poisoned by the misterious idol that some strange cultists have put in the middle of the unfortunate farmer´s land. Somebody will pay for that!!

The dogs are from Vendel.

Love these oldies but goodies!
It's nice to have them all in one place for quick reference and to reflect on their awesomeness.

By the way, I used your King in Yellow truck as a reference when I painted my vehicles.
They didn't come out anywhere as nice. :'(

Aside from your amazing paintjobs, I noticed something funny: thus far you have exactly the same Artizan miniatures as me! lol There are 5 in my collection, from which I have painted 2. Now I'm curious if those other 3 will also pop up here... ;)

The Prophet is fantastic, great paintjob, superb choice of miniature and great base.
Just perfect!

(I have never seen the mini before, so have no idea and am of no help, sorry....)

Mad Scientist- Again, what a great paintjob, you make me want that mini now. ;D
Seeing as how I have only just come into possession of the Pulp mad Scientist, I had better refrain.
It is wonderful, though.
Love it!

After seeing Dr Curfew, I am begining to suspect that you are finding people that look like available miniatures and just taking photos of them!

Thank you for your very kind words and I´m very happy that you like the miniatures. I´m enjoying a lot painting them and planning the games. I usually paint a lot of WW2 or Napoleonics for other people, so I use Strange Aeons and Mythos stuff to take fresh air and keep my sanity. Thanks you for your support and encouraging!! And please keep posting your miniatures and AAR because they are being a great source of ideas, inspiration and It´s very nice to see other people is doing.

Miniature 54, "the Sacrifice", This is the "Large crate with hands/tentacles (http://blackcatbases.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=437_612&products_id=2130)" from Black Cat Bases. I enjoyed a lot painting it and planning how I´m going to use it in my games. I have thought to paint at least three of them and use them as scenes of horror or objective markers (victims for rescueing or something like that). I´ll only use the hands and I´ll use the tentacles for other things I have planned. I put some balsa wood inside of each crate side to attach the arms to them. I made holes in the wood and I glued the arms in them.

Miniature 55, Mouth on Legs (http://blackcatbases.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=437_612&products_id=2672) from Black Cat Bases. I have got several of them, I have planned to use them as giant vermins or another strange animals, the little sons of The Great Mother.

I have no excuses but I do have pictures so... here we go:

Something strange has been spoted in the forest outside the town. Blurry pictures have been taken and some field agents have been sent to investigate the anomaly. But obviously everything has gone wrong from the beginning, this time the problem wasn't a lost creature far from home but a huge flying polyp, and it's not just any polyp, it's the Dark Puppeteer (http://strange-aeons.ca/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=78). We'll probably send a new team to deal with it because we haven't had any news from the first one.

Great to see more of your stuff, I really love your work.
Fantastic PJ on this beasty...had already seen it on the SA website (recognized your style)...I love the agonized Agent on the base, that's really a nice detail. I think I'll buy this one after I come back from my holiday in the UK next week and the one after that.

All the miniatures by Uncle Mike´s Worldwide (http://strange-aeons.ca/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=78), except the lamp post which is from Black Cat Bases (http://blackcatbases.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=430_442_476&products_id=2115).

Does the Insanity afflicted investigator come with the Dark Puppeter?
Yes he does, he is part of the base (part of the crew part of the ship... ;D)

I have had the oportunity to paint the Bloody Tongue miniature by Acheson Creations (http://achesoncreations.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=840&category_id=84&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1) and I have to say I have enjoyed a lot. I have used again flesh tones for the skin and reddish spots but I like that combination for this kind of creature, it makes them look more disgusting (and they need to be disgusting because they eat people!!). I have tried to get a night effect in one of the pictures, that´s because is so dark.

Will need to get him done soon, as I feel he will be needed in the campaign that our group will be doing soon.
Have to move him forward in the queue...

Thanks!!

And... this time I have got only a picture but two (or five)miniatures. They are from the set Scrawny Ones (http://strange-aeons.ca/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=22&zenid=8afecc7a59ebb23effb643458fd23ef3) from Uncle Mike´s Worldwide. I painted the creatures some time ago but I have finished the three summoning markers. I have painted one like stone with stained with blood, another like green cristal or green stone and the third one like glowing black/green stone.

Today not an agent or creature but very useful and nice to paint. Thanks!!

I have made a fast painting guide for the Crypt. I have used Foundry colours but you can use any other green palette from another branch. The miniature are easy to paint using drybrushing. I have started priming the miniature in black and then I have used Foundry 69B as base colour. After that I painted drybrushing with F69C some areas leaving the lower part of the crypt darker. I have highlighted the crypt as you can see in the drawings. So in the end you should have the lower parts very dark and the upper edges almost white or yellow (depending on your taste). I’ll explain sometime during the day how I paint the sculpture on the Crypt’s lid because I have done that in another way, basically as if I were painting a jewel. I hope that helps.

Thanks. I´m happy that you find useful the painting guide.

I have painted the sculpture using the same colours as I have used on the Crypt. This time I have painted it as if I were painting a jewel. I have done seven highlights but with only three it would be ok too. Please note that this time I have used the paint as always (watered down) and not by drybrushing. You have to take into account the light on the whole figure and its direction while painting every raised part as an independent jewel. There are more complicated ways of doing it but I find this way to be quick and effective (at least for me).

These "lovely creatures" are zombies breaking through the ground ready to deliver "joy" to the agents. They are made by Escenorama (http://escenorama.com/accesorios-para-no-muertos/) from the Zombies (http://escenorama.com/shopping/product.php?id_product=49) set (It contains 5 zombies and 7 gravestones groups). I´ll be showing more stuff from Escenorama because I´ll use them as Zombies entry points, grave markers and scenery. I haven´t changed the basing system, I´m using MDF round bases for markers and small scenery items.

Thanks!!

Uncle Micke´s Worldwide has released a new Witches set, so I´ll show pictures of the two Witches sets during the next days. This is the first one from the set Witches I (http://strange-aeons.ca/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=79). I love the "little" friend that she is holding.

Another great addition to your collection.
I particularly like the extra attention applied to the frog, great detailing.

I am really going to have to try your technique for adding depth to clothing with those short brushstrokes.
It work amazingly well!

Bet I cock it up, though!
I do not have bionic eyes like you...

Today I have an special Agent, Agent Carter (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=44950.0). This fantastic miniature appeared at my door some days ago so I have painted it. You might remember Y´golonac (http://losingsanity-einarolafson.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/day-23-horror.html) by Avolak Castings (you can see more of his work here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=08dfa2fcd618223fa54548debf8481f0&topic=34428.0), here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=08dfa2fcd618223fa54548debf8481f0&topic=36045.0) and here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=08dfa2fcd618223fa54548debf8481f0&topic=38371.0)!). He has modelled some of the most disturbing Lovecraftian creatures I have seen (or Ramseycraftian or Ashtonsmithcraftian...). So I give you Randolph Carter with the Silver Key, Master of Dreamers, Cats Friend and Ghouls Saviour!! I think you will hear from him very soon.

This is another idol from Monolith Designs. I bought it in Partizan a year ago. They were selling miscast pieces very cheap so I bought a lot of them for my Strange Aeons project. I have painted it as a big painted clay sculpture, I have used the resin defects to create chips where you can see the terracotta colour.

Thanks!! They are metal, so they need a bit of care. I think that you can pin one of the feet to a "rock", gravestone or something to make it stronger. The Nightgaunt will not fly but it'll be more resistent.

Cheers.

Thats a great paintjob, I was just figuring how I should do my black!

As for nightgaunts, Mason, I had the same problem. As much as I like avolak castings' one it is just too dynamic, as weird as it sounds - love the idea of balancing it on the tail tho! I really like fenris' pose and how slim it is - just as it is supposed to be. But personally, I went with EM4...I actually like how simple it is - suits the rest of my collection. So, perhaps you could have a look at those?

Nice work einarolafson!
Some very subtle shading effects there.
I think that's the best painted nightgaunt I have ever seen.
Lovely.

This fireball was modelled by Avolak Castings in a translucent resin. I painted it with yellow inks and some drybrushing. In the end the thing is keeping transparence and I like the final result. I'm including a comparison picture with a Threshold Agent from Uncle Mike's Worldwide, and another one of the Nightgaunt.
