Title: Blackwater Gulch Kickstarter Launched!

I'm very pleased to announce the launch of the Blackwater Gulch Kickstarter Program!

If you are unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it is a website that allows a company to get the funding they need for a new product or service, directly from fans and potential customers. I am using Kickstarter get the funding needed to produce box sets for the game. These sets will include 5 unique 30mm miniatures, 5 premium Character Cards and a "quickstart" rulebook, all packaged in a handy foam-lined plastic case that you can use to store and transport your figures.

Potential backers are essentially pre-ordering one or more of the upcoming box sets, in addition to bundled deals with scenery pieces, and even the opportunity to create your very own character or gang that will be permanently added to the storyline for the game world!

For more information, please visit my Kickstarter page at:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1763460781/blackwater-gulch-gangfights-in-the-old-west (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1763460781/blackwater-gulch-gangfights-in-the-old-west)

There, you will find all the information on how to support the game, and what different packages are offered, in addition to sample sculpts and concept art for new figures that that will be included.

So, please check it out, and for more information on the game you can visit my website at http://www.gangfightgames.com (http://www.gangfightgames.com)

Thanks!

Tim @ Gangfight Games

PS: Here's a new sculpt I just got from Brother Vinni, haven't shown him off yet :)

I gave the rules a thorough 5 minute review (LOL) so I'm surely missing details but had a few quick questions:

Regarding the firearms:
Why are there different levels of weapons?

There are black powder percussion cap weapons mixed in groups with cartridge loaded weapons, is there no difference game wise for loading?

Amongst the various strength ratings there are weapons of inferior calibers rated higher than other superior calibers, also some weapons that were typically the same calibers but they have different strength ratings.  Am I being too strict here for a game or am I missing something?

Sorry, don't mean to nag!  I'm certainly coming from a mostly uniformed position as far as the game rules are concerned.  I just wanted to take the opportunity to inquire.  The game does look promising and I plan to direct our groups attention to these (they are not members here).  We currently play 3 different sets of Western rules along with doing some Cowboy shooting.
Title: Re: Blackwater Gulch Kickstarter Launched!
Post by: Necros on 16 March 2012, 01:57:01 PM
Simple answer is, I didn't really take calibers or anything like that into account. The levels and weapon stats are what they are just for game balance and flavor. For example any weapon could be renamed to something else, what I was more concerned with is game balance. In fact, I'll be doing different games based on the same rules and most guns in the new game will have these same stats, just different names and pictures. So, I went through some old gun catalogs I found online and just picked some cool sounding and looking guns and the rest was history :)

The game is fictional, based on history, but it's definitely not a history lesson (because I'm not smart enough to teach people anything :) ). It's more hollywood western than historical western. The most important guns I wanted to feature were the Colt 45 and Winchester, but I needed more than 2 guns in the game :)

I'm totally into this. BUT? All I want is certain figs. Mostly the kneeling Outlaw.
I can't find all the pics of figs is on the site anymore. The online store only has a couple.

Post by: Necros on 16 March 2012, 08:53:12 PM
Thanks guys!

If you go to the news section of the site you should be able to see the pics in there, you'll have to scroll down a bit. Also there's pics on the Kickstarter page. For the kickstarter, if you do $10 you can select 1 fig of your choice, from either set. if you do $20 you can pick 3.

None of the miniatures are made yet, so you won't find them in my online store :) I don't expect to have the metal for the first set figs until May at least, which is why I have a release date of June on the page.

Thanks, Necro!  I wasn't so concerned if the grain measurement for each weapon was not cross referenced on the periodic table, LOL.  The game looks good and the presentation eye candy factor is high!

One question, please.
Will there be mounted and dismounted of the same figure?
I hope so.
Title: Re: Blackwater Gulch Kickstarter Launched!
Post by: Necros on 17 March 2012, 02:13:49 AM
Yes that's the plan :) When I finally get around to doing horses, I'm thinking I'll have a few different horse sculpts and then that will come with the same figure on foot and on horseback. I'll probably have the horses generic so they can be used for all figures, and the mounted guy will have the saddle part and legs molded together sort of. That way I could also use the same horses for other things, like stage coaches :)

Thanks folks, it's all funded now!!

Working hard getting the info and art together for the Native American gang if I can make it to $6000, and that will be followed by Mexicans at $9000 .. basically a new set for every 3k I can get :)

I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who has backed the game so far or still is interested in the game. I'm very excited to see this succeed in just 48 hours! But let's not stop there! I've just updated the Kickstarter project page (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1763460781/blackwater-gulch-gangfights-in-the-old-west) created some stretch goals for the project, which are:

STRETCH GOAL #1 - $6000 - If we can reach $6000, I'll will be able to fund a third box set. This set will be The Bloodwolf Tribe, a Native American themed gang. Concept art for this gang is still in production, but I have one figure sketched out so far, shown below. I'll update the image as I get more!

BONUS - If we make it to $6000, every backer who pledged $30 or more will recieve specially made, custom Sheriff Dice at the rate of 1 D6 per $1500 generated. So, that will be 4 dice to start with, and the more we can make the more you will get! These dice are ONLY being created for this Kickstarter campaign and will never, ever be available ever again. These dice will be 16mm with a 6-pointed sheriff start on the #6 side. When we have a sample we'll show it here, for now, here is what the emblem will look like:

STRETCH GOAL #2 - $9000 - If we can reach this goal, we will be able to fund a fourth box set. This set will be The Bandidos Mexicanos, a Mexican themed gang. Concept art will be produced and I'll add images as soon as I have them. Expect to see plenty of criss-crossing bullet belts, federales, machetes and sombreros!

BONUS: If we make it to $9000, every backer who pledged $30 or more will receive The Norwegian for FREE. This Hired Gun can be added to any gang, and will have stats similar to a gang leader, with unique weapons not available to normal characters in the game. Sculpted & designed by Pedro Ramos, The Norwegian is based on a character from the AMC show "Hell on Wheels". This model will be available for sale on our website later, however he's being offered free to Kickstarter backers. He'll be available probably around the same time as the Vigilance Committee figures.

Thank you again for your support! I can't wait to see how far we can take this and start bringing you all the best Wild West figures around!

I changed the name to avoid any kind of copyright info that could happen some day. But then I think I remember on the show he said he was actually Norwegian, but everyone called him The Swede instead.. I guess cowboys didn't know the difference :)

I just read about the progress for Blackwater Gulch, something that is really exiting and promising. I do hope that this project will go really well, and I will absolutely shape up and take part of it and make my pledge.

All this is very promising! =) I hope you reach the highest goal, more miniatures for everyone! =)

I never understood exactely how kickstarter works: what if i pledge a project? will i have only the benefits, or also my money back? Because for the 30 dollars one is reasonable, but for the 1000 dollars is something that only a very rich one could afford, since is not an investiment but a ... luxury!
Title: Re: Blackwater Gulch Kickstarter Launched!
Post by: Necros on 22 March 2012, 02:09:51 PM
The way it works is, if you want one box set you would pledge $30. When I get the models produced I'll send you the box set you want. So, it's like a pre-order. The other levels include more miniatures or building kits. The high priced ones are more like for people that really want to support the game with extra cash and you're basically buying your way into the game too. I agree it's expensive, but I added it in because they recommend you have something to offer for people that really do want to invest a lot in your project. Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it :) $1000 to create an all new gang is actually a good deal though I think, considering it actually costs more like $3000 for me to make a gang, sculpting alone for 5 figures could cost as much as $2000.

Anyway.... we just reached $6000 this morning, that means the Native American gang is a go! I'm hoping to have the rest of the concept art in the next couple of days. I also have another artist who will be starting on the concepts for the Mexican gang in the beginning of April, so I won't have pics for them until the end of next week if not the beginning of the following. Also waiting on a sample pic of the sheriff dice from the manufacturer, hopefully they'll send me that soon. I'll probably have to get them without the word "sheriff" in the middle of the star, when I shrunk it down and printed it out, the letters were barely readable.

Since the terrain/building kits are a more limited thing, and the $90 level with the kits was sold out, I made a new $90 backing level where you just get 3 starter sets, instead of 2 sets + 2 buildings.

This whole Kickstarter thing just amazes me. Not my campaign but all the gaming projects on there.. I think it's really the beginning of a new future for the gaming industry. There's some really cool projects out there getting funded way beyond their goals.

I wish you the best of luck with your game, the art released so far is great and the support is a very good sign as well. Clearly people are interested in a professionally made Wild West miniatures game. I hope you include campaign rules, maybe as a supplement :)

I would support the game as well but I have no credit card and PayPal is not accepted  :?

thanks :) I do have campaign test rules on my website, it's on the download page with the main rulebook. One day after I get a lot of miniatures made I will probably make an all new big rulebook that would be sold in stores but I'll still always at least have the basic rules for free.

Post by: Cherno on 24 March 2012, 07:35:41 PM
Haha yeah I actually found those rules a few hours after I wrote that post ;) Having at least some rules for free is a good thing so players can test before they buy the full version.

Quick update..

I recently added a FAQ listing at the bottom of the Kickstarter page with estimated shipping charges. Since there's so many different things offered and some of it can be bulky or heavy, I had to do some math and come up with a list that covers just about everyone everywhere.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1763460781/blackwater-gulch-gangfights-in-the-old-west

Next, I'm still waiting on more artwork. I should have the rest of the Bloodwolf Tribe soon, and the Bandidos next week. I just got a sample pic from Chessex for the Sheriff Dice, here's what they will look like :)

If the Kickstarter ended today, I'd be ordering 600 dice! But with 19 days to go and around $8400 raised so far, I'll probably be ordering a LOT more than that. Which is good, the more I order, the cheaper they cost to get made :)

I've been getting a lot of requests from people to add more spaces with the building kits. I do want to keep them as a special thing for the early backers, however I recently added a new backing level of $150 for 3 starter sets and 4 buildings. I did that last night around midnight, and they were sold out by the time I got up in the morning! But, some people at other backing levels moved into the new slot, so there's some other openings for now if you hurry :)

I'm pretty confident we're going to reach the next stretch goal. Once $9000 is reached I will be announcing some other new stretch goals that will include some nice new goodies, so stay tuned :)

Just another quick note to announce that we just blew by $9000 and in fact are well over $10k now! So, it's safe to say the Bandidos Mexicanos will be sailing up the river to Blackwater Gulch very soon!

I've added 2 new backing levels now... $120 for all 4 starter sets, and also $180 for all 4 starter sets plus 4 GameCraft buildings (limited to 4 backers, and already sold out within an hour!). Since I'm not able to change the text in the different backing levels, I also wanted to add that if you're already locked in at another level that's limited and you don't want to lose your spot, and it says you only get 2 sets but you want more, you can just increase your pledge by $30 for each additional starter set that you want.

I'll be updating the main Kickstarter page later this evening, but the next set of stretch goals I have planned will be... at $12,000 everyone who pledged $30 or more will get the Bounty Hunter Gang Leader figure for free in addition to everything else. At $15,000 everyone who pledged $30 or more will also get the Gambler Gang Leader figure too. Since these figures are available now, if you already have them you have the option of getting extras if you want them or to have them on hand to give them to friends, or you can get store credit for future purchases ($8 per figure), or as credit to put toward your shipping charges. Up to you!

This is growing faster than I ever expected. Thank you all so much!

I love the Mexicans, are these actual 28mm or hero based 28mm? Or slightly larger? I do want to add some of these to my Banditos if they fit, love the girl and the guy with the machete...

They're a tad heroic, but not OMG heroic like GW's stuff. more like 30mm to the eye .. but you really can't tell the difference next to a 28mm fig unless you're looking for it.

That would work for me, that would work ok with Foundry, Knuckleduster and the Black Scorpion (mainly them) it sounds like....I really like where you are going with this.

No more new goals .. this project took off so much and so fast, I can't think of anything new and worthwhile that I can add in the few days that are left.. i'm fresh out of ideas so I'm just gonna "let it ride" till the end :) However, the +1D6 every $1500 still stands.. getting close to 11 dice now :) Maybe we can get to an even 12 at the end.

Anyway, they won't let me extend it, once I start the program the date is set in stone. if you can't afford to make a pledge now but you really don't want to miss out, if you can email me before the program ends (10 PM EST on Sunday the 15th) and tell me how much you want to pledge and for what level, I can honor that and just hold your space for a few weeks. Then you can just send me the money via paypal or something like that when you're ready. Just follow the Contact Us link on my main website and give me your name, address and what you want :)

Will there be a deluxe gang leader for each gang in the long run? If there are, and they are done before the pledge stuff ships I'd definitely like to pay the difference to get them added in.
Title: Re: Blackwater Gulch Kickstarter Launched!
Post by: Necros on 12 April 2012, 08:17:49 PM
No, the deluxe guys aren't part of any gangs.. they're meant to be more like generic wild west figures that you could add to any gang.. and they don't even have to be gang leaders, they can be professionals or henchmen or whatever you want. I don't have any other deluxe guys on the radar at the moment, right now I want to focus on getting the different box sets done and then follow them up with some blisters of extra figures to match. I may have a couple of those extra blisters done before the last boxes start shipping though ... don't know yet for sure at this point though

Thanks :)

So the Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1763460781/blackwater-gulch-gangfights-in-the-old-west) will end on Sunday, April 15th, at 10PM Eastern (New York) time. First, I wanted to say 'thank you' again to all of you who are interested in the project. It's been more successful than I ever imagined.

Now down to business! I have all of the concept art done for the Bandidos Mexicanos now.

The concepts for the other gangs are all done, and on the Kickstarter page now.

Many have asked to increase the amount of sold-out backing levels that include building kits, so as a sort of "End Of The Kickstarter Blowout Extravaganza," I'm going to be freeing up a bunch of extra slots in those sold-out spots. And while I'm fresh out of new ideas for stretch goals, and there's only a couple of days left anyway, I'm just going to let it ride and see how we do at the end. Keep in mind, for every $1,500 raised, you get an extra Sheriff Die... as of this moment, everyone is getting eleven dice, at $18,000 it will be an even twelve, and so on! For those of you that may want even more dice, you can add extra money to your pledge, an extra $3 for four dice ($0.75 cents each, but I think Kickstarter only lets you add dollars).

We're in the home stretch now, so if you've been waiting, now's the time to jump in and save, and get some free goodies! :)

I just keep thinking ... I'm gonna be ordering like 2500 dice... maybe even more at this rate. that amount of dice is just mind boggling to me for some reason. I'm gonna have to have some fun with them before I start packing them up for orders. Maybe I can see if I can fill my bath tub with dice? or build a giant dice pyramid up to the celling?

I made a last minute pledge, wich was all good, but it was a hasty one, since I didnt have that much time, and my Amazon account was giving me so much trouble (it turned out it was me all along I belive) so had to retrive password and whatnots, and it still didnt want to let me go through with it, so I actually though I would miss the whole thing.
I had decided quite some time ago to be part of this, but forgot all about it, and got reminded while browsing older news from a few days ago on Tabletop Gaming News. Luckily, it worked out in the end. I am most exited about this project! :)

I would like to congratulate Gang Fight Games on the successful kickstarter fundraising project. I suspect raising nearly 6 times the original goal was something he/they didn't expect at all and it shows that a) there is a huge demand for a high-quality old west game and b) that kickstart is an awesome way for fans to support a project no bigger publisher would work on and for small design studios to evaluate market opportunities for niche products.

Although I have not pledged to this particular project, Old West gaming is on my horizon, so to speak, and I may pick it up sometime in the future.

I'm gonna be emailing everyone later tonight to go over your orders.

I'm about to sign the deal with a fulfillment and distribution company that will be helping me get my stuff out to stores all over the world :) They'll also be helping with the printing and production stuff too, so it'll all be streamlined .. all I have to do is make the game, and they do the rest :) So they'll most likely be the ones shipping out all of the rewards too.

Got some new news to share .. just signed a manufacturing & fulfillment deal with GameSalute.com (http://www.GameSalute.com/) .. they'll be handling worldwide (!) distribution of Blackwater Gulch miniatures and more. We have lots of cool stuff planned :)

Game Salute is excited to welcome Gangfight Game Studio to our family of design studios! Blackwater Gulch - Gangfights in the Old West recently wrapped up a successful Kickstarter campaign, proving that there’s much love for the wild, wild west.

From the project’s Kickstarter page:

Blackwater Gulch is a table top hobby game where you and your friends collect small gangs of finely detailed, 30mm miniature men who will fight each other in the fierce and wild west. You will create a gang or posse based on different professions and equipment, breathing life into your men through the skirmishes they win or lose in the town streets and outskirts.

The game is named after the fictional town of Blackwater Gulch, located “somewhere out west”. It’s around 1890 and a gold rush has brought fortune-seekers to town after a local discovery made nationwide news. This also brought a population boom and the town has become overcrowded with unsavory sorts, and not enough lawmen to go around.

Your gang is living in these troubling times. They can be lawmen or outlaws, vigilantes or freedom fighters. You decide who they are, what they can do and why they do it. Adventure awaits in Blackwater Gulch! Keep your six-guns by your side, and an eye on your back. You’ll never know who’s coming down the road…

Check back regularly for production updates, including the official release date.

Welcome to the family, Gangfight Game Studio!

In other news, sculpting is about to get under way for the figures in the next 3 starter sets. I'll have previews to show off as soon as the sculptors send em :)

In the email he sent out he mentioned getting that straightened out when it's time to ship. I don't think that's changed as of now.

Yes, if you didn't add to your pledge, you can add before it ships. I was planning to just do that with Paypal. But, I'm not sure how Game Salute will handle it just yet. They might have something set up on their online store to make things a little easier. We're still working out the little details like that.

but anyway, yeah you can pay for shipping right before we send it out to you :)

Awesome! I'm pretty excited. A buddy at Jordan Con this past weekend also pledged, which floored me. He's one of the guys that is getting a painted gang, you might have had problems with him as he said he didn't care which gang gets painted. We're looking forward to getting some games in!

I guess it's a good time to start building terrain.

Yeah I love his stuff :) But, I want to keep the game pretty much historical, but more like a the hollywood version of the old west.

But one day I do hope to do special holiday models.. someone suggested making zombie versions of some of figs for holloween. I was thinking of a headless horseman too. And we'll need to do a cowboy Santa some day.. lots of fun stuff :)

No bad, but the separate arm looks a bit conspicuous to me. It makes him look like a posable action figure. I guess you might be able to fix it with putty...
Title: Re: Blackwater Gulch Kickstarter Launched!
Post by: Necros on 09 May 2012, 06:19:04 PM
I think he's got the separate arm stuck on with bluestuff so the gap is more visible. But, yeah a teeny bit of putty or even just thicker super glue would fix it.

Got a really big pic, but here's a big collage of the updated Bloodwolf + 1 lawman sculpt from Bob Naismith. Photo quality isn't the best but you can get a better idea of how they look now. Once I have the greens in hand I'll take some nice pics :)

The figures are around 30mm to the eye if they're standing up straight. They are bigger than most other wild west figs out there, but are a great match for Black Scorpion, just a hair taller.

Did you mean all new mexicans? or the 2 I haven't had sculpted yet? No new concepts yet, but will be getting them done soon. Here's all 5 of the mexicans that will be in the starter

Well, there will be a mexican in the Kickstarter's gang, but not one of the bandidos :) they're going to be like a group of drifters with a little bit of everything. It's was from a game shop, and the characters are all based on some of the regulars there :)

The figs are not going to scale well with the Foundry. It's already been stated that they are large 28s i.e., 32-34mm and that they are more on par with the Black Scorpion stuff.

Next, Brother Vinni will be sculpting 3 of the Vigilance Committee figures and I’ll show those off as soon as I get them. In the next day or so I will also have the greens for all 5 of the Bloodwolf Tribe and 1 Vigilance Committee deputy from Bob Naismith, and I’ll post up pics as soon as I can :)

Gotta say I'm dissappointed by the last 3 Mexican sculpts, they've lost a lot in translation from the art to a sculpted mini. Susana especially, she looks more like a transvestite now with overly chunky hands and feet/boots. It's a pity as I was stoked by the art work and really excited to be adding these to my Black Scorpion gang.

And finally heres some new pics of the Bloodwolf Tribe greens. First, here’s the whole gang all together..

Next, here’s the description of the gang that will be in the rulebook:

Quote
The Saltpan Plains beyond the town’s boundaries are a dangerous place filled with many hazards. The terrain is harsh and tough as are those that choose to live upon its dusty back. Hidden amongst the boulders, outcrops and scrub are many tribes of Indians, most famous being The Bloodwolf Tribe. Hardened against the elements and fiercly loyal, the Bloodwolf have their own reasons for coming into the town of Blackwater Gulch.

Their true names are a secret only those within the Tribe will ever know, so when they came raiding into town, or were seen from a distance, the people of Blackwater Gulch gave them their own nicknames. Their Chief is “The Hawk”, his tomahawk a deadly mix of weapon and totem. “Boneshirt” scouts for the Tribe, his longrifle keen to pick out distant targets while “Top Hat” is keen to stand and fight, gunslinger style. “Mohawk” and “Spearman” are ferocious, deadly warriors, comfortable in any terrain as they are in the streets of Blackwater Gulch.

And last but not least, here’s a few closeup shots. I’ll have more to share in the next couple of days :)

After that, we’ll start working on our next wave of figures which will be a 5th starter for a gang of drifters and 3 more Hired Guns. I'll have concepts for them to show off soon :)

We'll be shipping the dice and bonus figs along with your order. But unfortunately it ended up taking a lot longer than I hoped to get everything sculpted, and the overseas shipping has been getting slower and slower :( So I'm expecting and hoping to have everything done in september now, instead of august. Like the last 2 figs that were just finished probably won't get master molds done for another 3-4 weeks, followed by another 3-4 to get all the figures produced, and I was warned that with GenCon being in the middle of august, it's gonna screw up the schedule with my production company.

I think I'm starting to see why some companies don't even announce new stuff till it's almost done.. you never knew how long it will take to make :)

hehe thanks :) Yes I don't plan to stop anytime soon. After these first 4 starters are released we'll be doing a 5th starter from the Kickstarter backer that got to design their own gang, and then 3 more hired guns from other backers that got to design their own character.

Then we'll be doing 3-man add-on packs for each gang to expand them. Right now I'm planning on 3 add on sets per gang, which will make 14 models each. And then do a full gang box set with 1 bonus figur, maybe like an alternate gang leader.

And then there's plans for whole other gangs too.. I'd like to do a hillbilly/mountain men gang, cajun themed gang, and carnival folks. And then there's cavalry and stage coaches... lots and lots planned :)
