Here are a few British tars I painted. My first Naploeonics since, ooh, about 1979!
They're from Brigade Games, sculpted by Paul Hicks.
I've been painting quite a lot of Paul's work recently, and these are amongst my favourites.
Oozing with period character and detail, they immediately bring to life the worlds of Lucky Jack and Hornblower. Fabulous figures and a joy to paint. I'm looking forward to a lot more releases in this range. The new French sailors look great too :)

And the pack configuration they come in...

Love them! the pant in particular are amazing! excellent work....reminds me of the many hours I spent devouring Patrick O'Brien books!
Cheers,
Blue
-
They are lovely, some of your finest work me thinks. :-*
-
:o Fantastic painting!
-
Love the stripes :-* :-* :-*
How are you finding the time, along with the LPL?
-
These were done a couple of months ago Colin, when I had a bit more time!
They've just finished in the final of Steve Dean's latest painting competition (they didn't win unfortunately), so I couldn't show them here until now ;)
-
More great figures, Captain.
Love your colors on the figures.
They really stand out.
-
Very nice indeed.
-
Your skills make me want to just throw away my brushes in frustration, damn your talent sir!
-
:o Splendid painting! I wish my painting skills were half as good.
-
Awesome paint job!
-
Fantastic paintwork, it was a close run thing Richard but this time Ney's charge came off. lol
Usually spots and stripes beats all. ;)
-
Git ;D
:-* :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Yowsa! Those are gorgeous! :-*
-
Speechless beauty! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

:o :o :o
Bloody hell!
:-* :-* :-*
-
They look fantastic.
-
Nice work Sir!
-
Not bad. ::)
Looks like they are all yelling... "ARGH!"
;)
-
:-* :-* :-* :-*
Absolutely gorgeous, Brigades Napoleon in Egypt is planned as my next project once STALKER is finished I will be saving this page as inspiration, though I could never reach these lofty standards. What paints did you use for the blue?
-
Totally unexpected, Richard. Smashing bunch, a real explosion of awesomeness!
-
Oh, my! How nice are those? :-*
I think you should make one of your fancy multi-figure bases, and cover it with starfish and sand castles. ;) lol
-
I think you should make one of your fancy multi-figure bases, and cover it with starfish and sand castles. ;) lol
lol
Thanks chaps :)
The blue is mainly vallejo Dark Blue (actually quite a bright royal blue), cut with black for the basecoat and white for the highlights, although i did try to vary the colours a bit by using Dark Prussian Blue and one or two other blues in the mix on a few of the figures, not that you can really see this subtlety in the pictures...
In reality of course, the jackets would have been a much darker navy blue, but this is hard to pull off well in this scale... ::)
So i just went with my usual excessively lurid colours... :)
-
I suspect a number of people are collectively breathing sighs of relief knowing these aren't likely to show up in the LPL :)
You have outdone many of your earlier works, and that is really saying something. Bravo!
-
Weird double post happened :)
To put it another way, they look great :)
-
They got my vote on more than one occasion in the Steve Dean painting competition and I certainly don't mind the lurid colours at all (give me the tawdry flummery of the tart any day ! lol ;D lol )
-
Fantastic work. More naps to come?
-
Loving those stripes. Cracking work! :o
-
I think those stripes are crackin' but most of all I like the skin tones. What colours do you use, Vallejo skin tones? I'm still looking for a good way to achieve a smooth transition on mine.
-
Skin is vallejo red leather 50:50 with dark flesh as a basecoat, then the same mix lightened with white for the main coat, then increasing amounts of white mixed in for the highlights. That's it!
People often claim white in a flesh mix makes the end product look chalky.
It can do. But providing there's enough yellow and red pigments in the other colours you're using, this can be easily avoided with a bit of care.
-
Great paintjobs; love the variety of pants. Thanks for showing them.
-
Absolutely stunning painting. If my smiley wasn't already green he would go green with envy :)
-
These are utterly brilliant! I was just recently wondering at where to get some good Royal Navy figures, thanks for that! Your painting always inspires me! Thanks for the little tutorials there too. Flesh is what I struggle with the most, personally.
I dub thee Master & Commander!

I dub thee Master & Commander!
lol
Thanks.
I feel a joke about the lesser of two weevils coming on... ;)
-
I must hide this page some how Kapitän, or we will have an incursion with the cursed 19th century miniatures and napoleonics in our gaming group, I can allready hear the screams for Hornblower skirmishes, endless video watching and forced naval gaming... ehum, now that I think about it, perhaps not so bad after all, and not that far away from good honest piraty work?
Honestly, I am really impressed, and no need to excuse your choise of colours, you can handle them so well, and its allways a true pleasure to enjoy your miniatures.
-
Blimey, missed this. Fantastic work there Capt B. :-*
However, third figure from the right, second row: you missed a bit. ;)
-
Great paint!
tt43.
-
..... although i did try to vary the colours a bit by using Dark Prussian Blue and one or two other blues in the mix on a few of the figures, not that you can really see this subtlety in the pictures...
I think this are those little details that makes the picture, even if you can't tell in the first place.
Great job on great miniatures. I really like Paul Hicks works, his miniatures are so full of character. It's very hard to resist not buying all those beauties.
-
If I'm not mistaken, your painting here is now on Brigade Games' advert in this month's wargames illustrated :)
-
Great Job,very nice.
-
If I'm not mistaken, your painting here is now on Brigade Games' advert in this month's wargames illustrated :)
Excellent :)
However, third figure from the right, second row: you missed a bit. ;)
lol Neil, you are a sick man...
-
Bet I made you look though! ;)
-
You´re a skilled man Richard. I love them, especially the striped trousers.
-
I love these figures. What about 15mm scale Royal Navy Landing party? Is there a manufacturer out there that makes them?
-
Fantastic figures and superb painting - one question, " do you ever go out ? " . What Rules do you use for Nap. skirmish ?
-
lol I go out a lot. Just been for a nice two hour walk and a pint with the wife - but I really should have been painting! ;)
I haven't actually used the landing party in anger yet. I'm waiting for Brigade to release a few more packs, then, when I have a big enough force I might pit them against Shaka's Zulus... I believe that could have happened ::) :D
Not sure on the rules yet, but I shall find something suitable...
-
Sheer brilliance. Vibrant colours, and the pants! Dear god, the pants! All works of art.
They would be wonderful figures to employ using TFL's Sharpe Practice rules, methinks.
Cheers,
Mike

Well now, sorry for bringing this thread back from Davy Jones Locker, but it is about to get a new lease of life - arrrrr!
I've now acquired most of the Brigade Games releases in this range which I didn't already have, including a couple of very spiffy little Middies from the putty prober of the talented Mr Hicks.
I've also acquired most of the Empress Maori Wars sailors, which (with not too much conversion) will double up very well as Napoleonic era Jack Tars
(I've decided to ignore the fact that they have percussion lock muskets - no-one, surely, is going to notice... ;))
Once finished, this lot will give me a completed landing party of 30 or so bluejackets... Nice, but not enough...
I decided I therefore needed that other essential component: Royal Marines.
Problem is, there are none in the Brigade Games range - only a command pack and heads (also by Mr Hicks), designed to fit the plastic Victrix British Centre company bodies (in fact, they were originally done for Victrix, but sold - with all their metal figures - to Brigade Games).
Given that the alternatives are Foundry (too small) and various other manufacturers who shall remain nameless but are all pretty rubbish sculpts, I duly ordered a set of heads and a couple of plastic frames.
I've put the first few together and they look rather good.
Problem is, the Victrix plastic bodies have full webbing for line infantry wearing backpacks and blanket rolls, whereas Royal Marines were light infantry who fought from or aboard ship, and almost certainly didn't wear heavy campaign equipment like this...
I considered shaving off all the unwanted bits of webbing, but decided this would be a hellish task... And I couldn't leave all that webbing going nowhere...
So I've used Green Stuff to improvise a kind of canvas knapsack to sit on the back.
Not historically accurate, obviously, but that's never my overriding concern. I think it will do the job.
They look a bit naff at the moment, but once painted, trust me, they will look peachy.
I've also added tarry pigtails to the back of the hair, because I think it helps give them a bit more of a period feel... I'll be doing this with most of the sailors as well...
Here are the first half dozen. Guess I'll do at least another dozen or so in due course, once I've got these lads painted...

Does this mean I have to make 28mm coastal fortifications then ::) ;)
Go on, ya know ya want to!
:D
-
Great work! Funnily enough I was looking for this thread the other day as I am back into my Napoleonics and thought some Naval figures would make a nice change. This thread provides plenty of inspiration.
-
The backpacks are a very good compromise to the strap problem. I've wanted to use the same models but I couldn't work my head around the abondance of straps.
The pig tails on the troops are spot on though and more accurate than the short hair!
-
Eager to see more.
-
Nice..... :-*
-
Thanks.
Does this mean I have to make 28mm coastal fortifications then ::) ;)
Only if you want to ;)
(And if anyone we know has some suitable Frenchies... )
Otherwise, I am going to be forced to pit my Royal Naval contingent against some piratical Arabic corsair types or some despotic Mexicans... :D
The backpacks are a very good compromise to the strap problem.
The pig tails on the troops are spot on though and more accurate than the short hair!
Thanks Kev - good to know.
Since you re-enact Napoleonics, I gratefully bow to your expertise :)
-
pfffff, u art is incredible captain, thanks for this escellent painted miniatures, i hope this new range u are painting will be like "the war of roses" and see more and more pictures, totally inspiring!!!! :-* :-* :-*
-
Gracias :)
-
Putty pushing now Eh? Are there no ends to your talents? ;)
They look Great, looking forward to seeing them painted up. ;D
-
Yes ... wow ... I'm speechless :o :-*
Especially the stripes on the pants ... quite outstanding!
You push me with your superb work to start building and painting my own Landing Partys ... finally ... but first look some episodes of HORNBLOWER :D
-
Wonderful work, Captain! Can't wait to see these painted up!
-
Really amazing work.
-
These look good but are there somewhere marines for the 1790-1795 period?
-
Not sure. What would they look like?
Think you'd have to be quite a purist to tell the difference wouldn't you? The most distinctive thing most people immediately recognise about British Royal Marines of Nelson's navy in the Napoleonic period is the distinctive top hat with hackle and piping.
Perhaps for an earlier period you could try putting the Brigade Games (ex Victrix) metal Royal Marine heads onto Perry AWI British infantry bodies with gaiters?
The AWI only ended in 1783, so the basic British infantry uniform can't have been all that different by 1790.
But I'm no expert - just guessing :)
-
The earlier marines would have looked the same as their land based compatriots, so the soldier uniform for 1790-95 would be entirely appropriate, no separate headgear required.
-
OK,
thanks. But afaik no one makes normal line troops for the 1790's
-
http://www.napoleon-online.de/ENG_MilFigures1792_Tafel14.jpg
The picture linked shows the uniform regulation for 1792, with the high gaters for home service. If you want to depict this period, there's no real difference from the AWI period uniform.
It only gets difficult when you want to depict XX Regiment, in 17XX year, in XX country, under the command of XX, using the variant XX uniform seen in XX obscure woodcut.
But I do admit that the Grenadier mitre can be a bit misleading as the designs change rediculously, just use tricorns.
-
Love those Royal Marines.
-
I have nearly finished painting my first six Royal Marines - and my God they are fiddly bastards!
All those straps (some of which don't make any sense) and bits of trim and lace. No fun at all.
I remember now why I hate painting Napoleonics. How people produce ruddy great armies for this period beats me - it would drive me bonkers.
Fortunately however, I only need to do a dozen or so. The rest of my 50-strong landing party will be jolly jack tars in their raffish, colourful (and - praise god - easy to paint) outfits!
Meanwhile, I've made up a few more plastic marines with metal heads. Again, Victrix bodies with Brigade Games (ex-Victrix) metal heads.
They don't require too much conversion really... A bit of green stuff to add knapsacks (to make sense of the nonsensical webbing), tarry pigtails, and to plump up the hackles on the hats a little bit :)
Here are the metal command figures...
They're strangely tall and slender for Hicks' sculpts, but are going to be a lot easier to paint on account of the fact they haven't got loads of bloody straps all over them!
Note the drummer's foot is not cast properly. I did think about adding a green stuff foot, but then thought - sod it, I'll hide it in a grass tuft :D
(I was going to make up plastic officers and drummer boy etc, but decided I might as well use the metal ones since I had them... )
And finally, a Victrix Peninsular War officer, who I think I might paint up as another Naval officer.
Plus a conversion of one of the Empress Maroi War sailors with a converted Nappy marine head.
I've done quite a few of these now to bulk out my landing party sailors, adding hats that make them look more 1800 and less 1840's.
The percussion cap muskets are wrong for the period, but I don't think anyone's really going to notice once they're on the tabletop...
Head and body, both by Mr Hicks again of course, so they match up pretty well - albeit from different manufacturers :)

You're getting to be quite a dab hand with the old Green Stuff. :)
You'll be sculpting your own figures soon. ;)
-
Lovely stuff.... :-*
-
Good to see you back at it Richard (somebody needs to ;) )
cheers
James
-
Superb.
-
:-* Excellent work Richard, when you start painting Naps you never have to prove your courage in any other way ;)
-
Looking good, sir.
8)
How you manage all this with your eyesight is beyond me, although you do seem to have been a little liberal with that green undercoat again.
:D
Looking forward to seeing them coloured in.
-
Great figures again, looking forward to see them masterly painted. :o
-
May I add my praise for an outstanding paint job. Bright and Breezy!
-
Thanks chaps :)
Great figures again, looking forward to see them masterly painted. :o
Well I don't know about that, but here are the first three finished...
The other three (from the original six) are pretty much done, and I now have the next six primed and ready for paint.
Once I have those completed, I'll have 20 sailors and 12 Royal marines done.
Then it's just another 18 figures (I have most of them already lined up) and that'll give me a tidy landing force of 50 figures :)
(That's how I do army list building - technical innit? :D)

Merci Lou :)
Now here is the assembled force so far - 30 strong, including last week's LPL entry (unsuccessful, so no extra rum ration for them!)
Having acquired 10 rather nice little Newline Designs British Napoleonic ship's gunners at Salute yesterday, that means I have another 30 to paint in total :)
Just to prove I don't just paint the fronts for the LPL... ;)

I have just purchased those Brigade Games sailors and after seeing your paint jobs on the same minis I am thinking of melting them down and turning them into a sinker for fishing :) Wow - your stuff is just stunning. Every one a work of art. That is seriously some of the best Napoleonic era painting I have ever seen on a 28mm miniature.

Stunning paint work :-* :-* :-*
Now all you need is a ship big enough to fit the lot in
-
Gawd they're good Richard. 8)
-
Top draw Captain!
-
Thanks chaps :)
Hmm, enough for a game there me thinks. :D
Well, 30 more to go. That'll give me 60:
- 10 officers, midshipmen, sailing master and ship's doctor
- 25 assorted jack tars belike, arrr.
- 15 Royal Marines
- 10 gun crew
I figure you must have about 200 Mexicans by now. So 60 salty English sea dogs should make for a fair fight ;)
-
Very nice captain- where is the doctor going to be from?

Very fine painting. And look excellent altogether.

;)
One of the Empress Maori War civilians with flintlock musket, top hat and tail coat :)
Oh yes. Very suitable.
-
Thanks :)
Right then... Here's my first gun crew.
Brigade Games only do one RN gun crew, and one or two of the poses are hard to love (much as I love Hicksy and his work!)
I've therefore been casting about for suitable figures for gun crews.
I tried Britannia - but they turned out to be a bit too big and lumpy in style, so I've shipped those on.
Then at Salute, I paid a visit to the Newline Designs stand. Bingo!
These figures have been about for quite a long time, so they are a tad static compared to most of today's figures.
But there are about 20 different gun crew figures available, they're quite finely detailed, and they scale in pretty well with my Hicks-sculpted figures. (A whisker shorter, but that's easily fixed by double mounting them on washers... )
Some of the sculpting detail is a little shallow and perhaps lacking in a bit of character though. So I've been busy with the Green Stuff, and here are the results...
I've added pigtails where they were missing, luxuriant sideburns, extra shaggy sponge/rammers, more raffish battered top hats, a few sailcloth trouser patches, and some sailorly bellbottoms on some of them... I've also bulked up the shoulders a bit here and there.
I was sorely tempted to try a concertina on the chap carrying chainshot - the pose is perfect for it - but decided that was a bit of a stretch for my fledgling sculpting skills ;)
(Possibly on gun crew #2 though... ::))

And here, with a Hicks/Empress Maori Wars figure for size comparison... (He is going to fulfill the part of Ship's doctor)
Mounting them on a 20mm washer atop a 25mm washer, raises them up just about the right amount, so any different in size won't be noticeable.
Think I'll get these chaps painted, then move onto a second gun crew...
-
lovely green stuff work, adds loads of character to the figures. Looking forward to seeing them painted

The bare metal looks perfectly serviceable and obviously the gs does add that little extra 8)
cheers

Nice work, especially on the pig details and sideburns. :)
You're getting really good, so you're gonna have to indulge yourself and take the next step, you know you want to. ;)

Next batch of gun crew ready for paint... The first crew are nearly finished... :)
Again, Newline figures tarted up a bit with Green Stuff. The figure on the right is a Brigade Games French sailor who I've converted into a British ship's carpenter!

Thanks friends ;)
Now here's the first gun crew painted (plus the ship's doctor, Dr Ishmael Spoons)...
Have to say, Newline Designs may not be fashionable, and they are a tad wooden, but with a bit of titivation they're actually very nice figures - and as you can see from the good doctor, a pretty good fit size-wise with Mr Hicks' output...

There is a rumour that he is going to let them loose on some Mexicans in the near future.
;)

They really do look great, what I enjoy with these posts is the way the Cap'n shares his thought process, figure choices, conversions and finally the painted minis,it's good to follow the process through to the finished item.
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-* Brilliant :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Just went back through and saw that you already replied about colours.
Good excuse to go back look at these great figures again made me re watch Hornblower on demand. And order Midshipman Fury.

Lovely work Richard. Your brushwork brings them alive.
Cheers,
Helen

Wicked Kewl. :D

Fantastic work. :)

Good Greenstuff and good painting. The basing solution works fine with the hight too, while remaining very subtle.

That dockor is just inspired

WOW! That's rather spiffy!! :-* 8) :o

Thanks all :)
That dockor is just inspired
I'm planning to make sure I have a full Ship's company, including such luminaries as cook, sailing master, ship's carpenter, and so on. The full cast of Master and Commander in fact ;)
Just went back through and saw that you already replied about colours.
Great :)
To summarise, the blue is Vallejo Dark Blue (not dark at all, but a very bright Royal blue). Skin is a mix of Vallejo Red Leather and Dark Flesh. In both cases, (the blue and the flesh) I've gradually mixed in increasing amounts of white for the highlight coats...
When are we going to see these in a game?
There is a rumour that he is going to let them loose on some Mexicans in the near future.
Yes, at BLAM, all being well. (If The Mexicans can find a slot for me in their busy social calendar ;))

Did you paint the stripes on the pants first then outline in black or a fat black stripe first then color over the top?
Man, those are a lesson in painting!

Dark colour stripe first, then highlight down the middle of the stripe and on the raised folds etc, with a lighter version of the colour.

Senior officers, midshipmen, Royal Marine command, and about another half a dozen tars with muskets and cutlasses. Should take me to almost 60 men :)

Aha!
The magic number for conquering Mexico.
:D ;)
Looking forward to thee painting them.
;)

And so, after a considerable pause in revictualling and pressing new men aboard HMS Dolphin, a few more hands are added to the complement.
Not least 'Unlucky Jack' Spoons - master and commander of the plucky Dolphin, aided and abetted by his favourite Midshipmen, plus a few more tars...
The Captain and his lads are from the Brigade Games Napoleonic range; the other three are Royal Navy Maori Wars era sailors from Empress - all sculpted by Mr Hicks, and amongst his best I reckon. I've fiddled the tars' hats with some Green Stuff to give them a more battered, less regular appearance.
My landing party now stands at 48 officers, men and marines, plus three guns.
I have at least another half dozen figures prepped to add to this company, hopefully, in time to meet the Mexicans with British guts, shot and steel, in about three weeks time :o :o
Is it enough, Nick? Is it enough? ;D

I only have 38 painted. :?
Well done. :-* :-* :-*
Keep them coming.

Amazing work!
-
Lovely :-* :-* :-*
-
Phenomenal Work! I particularly like your use of various shades of white that really add a sense of materiality to the clothes and equipment. You can tell what's leather, what's cotton/linen, and what's wool. I am soundly impressed, and hope my navy figures turn out somewhere even remotely close to this good!
[edited for spelling. Was a bit excited when typing...]

Shiny shiny but there's not enough ;D

Right ship-shape, Cap'n!
:-* :-*
Enough?
Of course there are.

Inspirational work as always :-*

Those really are superb and so vibrant Richard
-
Awesome sauce. ;D
I am sure even if they are under strength they will give the Mexicans what for. Although these are virgin troops aren't they and have never been tested in a game?
You know the old adage about playing with freshly painted figures..... ;)
:D

I simply have to roll better dice...
Ah.
::)
Thanks all, for the comments :)

Very nice :)

Very nice work, Capt'n.

wow, i just discovered this thread! Lots and lots of great stuff, captain! :D
-
Loving the stripes, great work as usual :)
-
All lovely!
Now where's the ship they came in on? ;) :D :D
-
Well I didn't want to splash out a vast sum of money on a proper Napoleonic era frigate until I've seen how they perform in action... ;)
So I daresay they'll be storming ashore from one of my pirate ships, suitably disguised... ;)
-
Lovely work Richard on your collection.
All the best,
Helen

Stunning work as always Captain! :-* :-*

Thanks shipmates :)
And finally I have completed my ship's company - for now anyway...
They will see action at BLAM next week. 54 figures by my reckoning.
Here's the final batch. Which for some unaccountable reason I seem to have been painting for about a month! (Bloody Napoleonics - so effing fiddly >:()
Rear Admiral Sir Edgar Fondling, flanked by a renegade French seaman who has joined the Royal Navy, by God (mainly because he's a lovely figure, and I didn't want to not use him). Both by Paul Hicks from the Brigade Games range.
The third figure is a Victrix plastic Peninsular War British infantry officer, who I decided to paint up as some kind of Naval supernumerary... Unfortunately, I fear he has ended up looking rather more like the Venezuelan Ambassador, but never mind.
I have also added my final Royal Marines, to give me a contingent of 12...
Lieutenant The Rt. Hon. Melville Gibson, striding ashore with sword and pistol, his drummer beating beside him (both Brigade Games metals by Mr Hicks). Plus a Victrix plastic jobby with a Brigade Games metal head.

They look superb though! ;D
-
Lovelly ones Richard. :-* :-*
Again a marvellous painting.
-
Bloody gorgeous, Cap'n!
:-* :-*
I see what you mean about the foreign chap.
Lovely figure, it would a shame not to use him.
8)
Rear Admiral Sir Edgar Fondling......that had me chuckling too.
lol lol
-
I bloody hate you sometimes Blood!
(unless, of course, you'd like to paint some for me ;) )
-
Brilliant just brilliant :-* :-*
Right if anyone winsthelottery/dies/getsebola, can you let me know cos I want his place at this BLAM thing I hear so much about. I'd love to come and see these in the flesh and wander up and down Upsheet Creek lol.
-
Thanks lads.
Just for completeness, here the ship's company entire, 53 good Englishmen and true, plus one renegade Frenchie... All shipshape, Bristol Fashion, and ready for action - arrrr!

Either way, simply gorgeous Cap'n...
I'm stupefied.

Will you adopt me? lol
-
Pardon the ignorance, but the renegade Frenchman, what makes him expressly French?
-
For me it's the headgear more than anything else, I've attached a photo of a French Infantry drummer from the same period made by Eureka miniatures and you can see the resemblance.
-
Superb work Richard :-* :-* :-*
I would've painted the supernumerary in a red jacket, just to make sure he know's which side he's on ;)
cheers

Wo-Hooooo!

Stunning work. This is going to be pure eye candy at BLAM. :-* :-* :-* :-*

Great stuff. Makes me think of the Battles on land that Hornblower had.
-
Well, a mere two and a half years later, I've added a few more figures to this project... ::)
(How was I to know the Perrys were going to release a whole range of Royal Navy landing party figures? lol)
This is just the 'attacking with swords and pistols' pack. There are several more packs. I don't need them, but will probably get them ;)
They scale in almost perfectly with the Hicks' sculpted Brigade Games figures, which is fortuitous.
This set got paddled in the last round of the LPL. I did do a scenic setting shot with other figures in the background as you can see, but felt it detracted from the paintjob on the figures themselves.

Thanks :)

Indeed. The Peninsular would be fun. I've now got 60 figures in this RN landing force. How many Frenchies are you having prepared by your paint slaves, Nicholas?

Wow..what depth..great work..

Simply staggering work, as indeed the Captain always does, a quick question...
Are the Brigade games landing party and royal marines available from a UK supplier or is it a case of only available from Brigade in the US?
I'm playing with Trent miniature Caribbean range and wanted to expand things with some Royals and Tars...
Many Thanks, Old Goat.
-
Fantastic job on these.
-
Ooooh! Missed these a month ago. They are delightful :-*
-
Stunning work as usual Richard! Keep up the good work, as your use of colors is inspiring!
-
Beautiful minies :)
Have you picked up Perry's marines too?
-
Where are the Perry officers????
Lovely miniatures and with your painting skills they would be even greater. :)
-
Thanks lads :)
Are the Brigade games landing party and royal marines available from a UK supplier or is it a case of only available from Brigade in the US?
Only from the US I'm afraid, but I have ordered several times and Lon provides a very quick service - usually delivery within a week or so, Transatlantic. Shipping charges have never been too bad, and provided you order relatively small batches of figures you shouldn't get stung by customs charges.
Have you picked up Perry's marines too?
No, I have my troop of Victrix royal marines, shown earlier in this thread, which gives me quite enough really :)
Where are the Perry officers????
Rather like the marines, truthfully I have a disproportionately large number of officers in this collection already Rui. I agree the Perry ones look lovely, but I really don't need them (which is not to say I won't add them at some point! ;))
-
Indeed i have to agree with you.
You already have quite a collection. :)
Just that i would love to see them painted by you.
The brigade ones are great. Unfortunately postage to Portugal is high. :(
-
Finally got round to painting the two water craft from Games of War that I picked up at Salute.
These are really delightful, lightweight resin models. I can't recommend them highly enough. The casting is as clean and crisp as I have ever seen on any resin model. You'd swear they were perfect plastic mouldings if you didn't know they were resin.
And where most wargaming boats resemble floating boxes with a pointy end, these really have a wonderfully maritime look and line.
I hazard that the designer knows real boats, their shape and construction. Because whilst these are obviously not accurate scale models, they do have a very convincing air.
They're cheap too.
In case you're tempted, the smaller one is the Jolly Boat. The big one is the Long Boat. (It has the look of a whaler to me, but never mind. It's brilliant).
As you see, they have good carrying capacity too :)
Heading for the Peninsular War soon I believe... 8)

I have some Games of War boats too and I totally agree, they are wonderful pieces.

Lovely work Richard.

This stuff is superb, good job Captain!
-
Excellent, looking forward to seeing these in action. I'll do my best to sink them for you. ;)
-
They really are rather nice. I've been tempted by those Games of War boats before. You make them look even more appealing.
-
Thanks gents :)
I'm looking forward to getting them into action...
I might actually buy a couple more too. They're a lot more convincing (and capacious) than my dear old Ainsty rowing boats!

Just wondering..
If a ship sends a landing party ashore, seamen accompanied by a Lt. And a body of marines accompanied by a Lt. Which officer will be in charge of the party,is there a seniority question here,or does the ship's captain nominate a party leader,or am I just reading too much into this ?
Just a thought who will be the leader 1 Big man in a SP2 game :)
Cheers

What seems right to me is....
Whilst at sea the Lt of the Seaman is in charge, as soon as boots hit solid ground it should be the Marine Lt.
Of course, this could lead to all sorts of wonderful arguments whilst they are all standing in the surf.
:D

A Royal Naval Lieutenant's rank is equivalent to the rank of Captain in the Army or Royal Marines. The Naval Lieutenant would be the senior officer and hence in charge of the combined detachment whether on land or at sea or even in an hot air balloon. If the Naval Lieutenant had any common sense and trusted the Marine Lieutenant's judgement he would frequently consult with that officer regarding operations ashore. The only exception likely to occur is if the Captain of the ship the detachment was from had given specific orders that the Bootneck was in charge upon landing, but that is unlikely scenario.
-

superb job on the lot :o
but what colours did you use for the wood? basecolours, highlights, etc, etc? the effect is very realistic

It is.

Perfect for a 'co-operative' game at BLAM.
;)
-
superb job on the lot :o

Obrigado :)
It's my usual recipe for weathered timber - Vallejo khaki (70.988) mixed with a dash of black for the base drybrush coat. Then gradual successive small quantities of white added to the mix for subsequent dry brush coats. Until the topmost highlight is a very pale greenish grey indeed.
Washed with a very thinned wash of Army Painter 'Strong Tone' ink.
Then a bit of judicious distressing / weathering using AK Interactive's 'Light rust deposits' and 'Streaking grime'.
...and just before someone chimes in to tell me that the Royal Navy would never allow their boats to get into such a terrible condition - I know that. They're just toys and I like the lived-in effect. Thank you ;)
-
Lovely work Richard :-*
-
Yep, very impressive indeed 8)

that's not only a good recipe, it's one I can relate to because I also like to use khakis for earth and vegetation tones.
but I must admit it never crossed my mind to use it for wood!
ingenious! this is something I'll most certainly use (let's hope I can get similar effects) :)
thanks!
-
Lovely work, and I'll have to give that weathered wood recipe a go on some Eastern European houses I have ahead of me. Great stuff.
-
I've never been a huge fan of Perry minis (prefer skirmish and Perry looks-wise are suited to massed ranks) but...I am powerfully tempted, truly lovely brush work (and i see what you are all saying about khaki, bought myself a pot and its damn flexible).
-
Huzzah!
I ordered the Landing party figures and the Marines from Lon and they arrived yesterday!
I now have a bunch of Trent Miniature mutinous British Caribbean militia, rising slaves (under the leadership of two men possessed by Baron Samedi and Baron Kriminal no less) and a mob of French Caribbean irregulars to pitch against my lusty tars and Royal marines.
French sailors from Brigade and some Victrix early Napoleonic painted up as French Marines to order and paint up and I've got a lovely little collection.
My work isn't even close to yours but I'm having a great time painting these little blokes.
Thanks for the inspiration!
-
That sounds like a great scenario Old Goat 8)
Thanks for the positive comments gents.
-
These look amazing! I lov eyour work captain!
-
Amazing and inspirational.
-
Thank you and merci! I do have a few more aroyal Marines half finished. I really must get round to completing them... ::)
-
Fantastic work again Richard!!! :-* ;)
-
Just :-* :-* :-* !!!
Eager to see all this splendid stuff, men and boats in action!
-
Thanks :)
I’m afraid they haven’t seen a lot of action - a couple of games is all. Like most of my collection alas :'(
