I've started a new VSF project with a different take on the usual VSF off-world games:
Royal AEther Marines, armed with electric carbines:

All figures are converted Scheltrum deep sea divers.

Very nice, they look great. :)
-
Superb stuff! Keep them coming.
-
That shotgun conversion works pretty well.
I hate those scheltrum figures however.
-
That certainly made me grin!
Love it!
:-*

I'm afraid I have to agree with you there (great painting though Dave 8) ).
cheers

They look great! Nice idea, converting those deep sea divers!
-
Nice paintjobs and conversions. :-*
-
Nice work.
I always thought these looked small. How do they scale up with other figures?
-
I agree that the Scheltrum minis generally look pretty awful . But the paint job helps, and the conversions are nice too. I have had similar ideas for aethermarines, but so far down the project list...
Yours look quite nice, and with the Queen's Colours, as well!
-
You did a great job with these minis!
-
I try and avoid the LAF "pile-on compliments syndrome" but (perversely) I really, really, like these figures and the thought behind them.
Gracias,
Glenn

Usual good standards there Bullshott - when do we get to see the Frenchies?
For some reason, the rear view of the three remind me of the telly tubbies, can't think why.
-
Great conversions and paint jobs.
-
You have some nice little guys there. Very "First men on the Moon".
-
Granted the figures are not the best,
but I find they have a certain charm.
Excellent painting.
I look forward to see what's next.
-
I think that its a great looking squad. Well done!

I've just returned from a long weekend away, so have only just seen the comments on my post. I'll follow up in more detail later, but here are a few snippets:
"First Men on the Moon" - well spotted, that film was definately an inspiration.
Figure Quality - although these are very basic sculpts, they do have a certain charm and the lack of detail adds a bit of challenge when painting them, althought it also means there is a lot less work required to prep the figures prior to converting them or to restore detail damaged during conversion.
Conversions - On most of the figures I just replaced the harpoon with a new 'gun barrel' comprising metal 'tubing' from Black Cat Bases and a bit of green stuff on the end of the barrel. On some figures I also removed and re-positioned the head so that the helmet always looked out to the front of the figure (not peeking over the shoulder as on some of them).
What's next - French rank and file are ready for painting, I just need to finish converting the leaders before painting them as a batch. In parallel with these, I should also be working on British impervious suits.
-
Looking good, mate! :o
Onwards and upwards! :)
-
Very nice indeed! Simple but inspirational.
Keep up the good work!
-
We've got a long holiday weekend coming up in Britain, so I'm setting myself a few tasks:
1 - Convert a Eureka impervious suit to accompany my Brits
2 - Convert a leader to accompany my first French unit
3 - Start painting the French unit
4 - Start work on light support walkers for the French
5 - Start work on a heavy support walker for the Brits
Hopefully I'll complete at least some of these tasks ...
-
The weather forecast is poo so there's a good chance you'll get it all done.
-
I want to see the walkers!
-
I love what you have done with the figures...had a similar project in mind, was just looking for the "right" figures to use. With that in mind I had a look at their website....postage is 60% of the order price!!!! Do they come hand delivered in a gold box on a siver platter!!! That is the sort of postage charged by most of the sellers on Evil Bay not by stores..that is terrible. Guess I will just have to keep looking.

Presenting the Pattern D (Admiralty) Impervious Suit:

Following the introduction of the first military impervious suits, the British army stuck with the basic design for their infantry, while at the same time encouraging industry to come up with new 'improved' designs. Meanwhile, the Royal Navy took the basic suit and began a programme of modifications to meet their needs.
Designating the original design 'Pattern A', the Navy quickly came up with 'Pattern B' - similar in all appearances to the pattern A, with the exception that the transparent helmet was replaced with an armoured 'diving' helmet. This model also featured some minor enhancements to improve reliability and 'operator friendliness', together with full waterproofing of the suit (enabling it to wade up to chest height). This became the standard suit for the Royal Marines.
The Pattern C suit diverged in a different direction; for use by naval clearance divers. The backpack steam engine of the previous versions was removed and replaced with an emergency battery pack and air supply. For normal operation, this fully sealed suit was used with air and power supplied from the surface, in the same manner as tethered diving suits (although with much better protection for the operator).
Pattern B and C designs came together in the form of the Pattern D design. This was a fully sealed suit with a larger 'backpack' housing the suit's own independant power and air supplies. Issued initially in small numbers to the Royal Marines, this suit enabled fully amphibious landings to be performed; with marines walking ashore beneath the waves, to the total surprise of their enemies. Following the success of earth-bound operations using this suit, the Pattern D was quickly adopted by the Royal Aether Marines for operation in hostile off-world environments.

Oh, very cool, Sir!
Cool backstory, too. A nice little project.
All the Best!
-
That looks great. Well done.
-
Nice conversion. The impervious suit looks great. :-*
-
Great stuff Dave, I like it and the backstory. Excellent stuff :)
-
Groovy 8)
I like the red back ground, it sets them off well :)
cheers

Next for the painting list:
French troops
... and in no particular order:
British characters/specialists
British heavy walker
French light walkers
'Mad scientist' faction characters and clanks
alien creatures
... and a pulp/VSF style rocketship ;)
-
Awesome! Sounds great!
Can't wait to see what you come up with.
-
This project looks so cool it negates any and all shortcomings the sculpts might have. :-*
-
Great stuff Dave. As Jimbib said the light is a nice effect. Best get yourself a supply of red bulbs in for your next game. ;)

Why don't you lend him the one from the lamp in your front room ;) lol

Pretty derned cool! I thought women, not warriors, were known for the "Wasp Waist" look though! Of course the angle might be emphasizing the wasp waist look.
I really am tempted by the picture to get some of these.
Gracias,
Glenn

The waist pretty much the only downside of the Eureka suits. They look nice built up from the pack and are perfect fro basing all sorts of conversion on (usually starting with replacing the pilot head with whatever nationality you want the suit to represent).
-
Sorry, but it's obvious: the pilot is squashed into the torso, the rest is conveyance. Obviously, one of those mysterious continental gnomes... lol
