Some commission stuff. First up, 12 Japanese infantry. Got another 12 to do which will give 2 small units and a command section. Just a quick pic for now. I'll do better ones when everything is done.

Long enough ;)

I've been meaning to do more but I've just not had the time recently. I might try and do a few of the less time consuming ideas sometime soon though.
Thanks for the comments all :)
-
Love the Russians, sweet. :-*
-
Beautiful painting style, really does the figures justice, and the figures themselves are so well sculpted they are just crying out to be painted well. tremendous.

The suitable officers and NCOs are now also available:

Are you eventually going to balance the # of Japanese packs with Russian??
-
Great paintworks! :-*
-
What can I say that you haven't read before? :D :-*

WOW! Are you going to make Artillery, Machine guns and Calvary for this conflict?
Also how long would the Japanese, be using this style of uniform.
-
Thank you for the comments! They are really appreciated!
Lovely!
Are you eventually going to balance the # of Japanese packs with Russian??
Sort of. ;) I don't really have a specific number of sets for each side in mind. There are currently more Japanese sets available as I wasn't sure to do the Russians at all, when I started the whole thing.
I try do make future releases either corresponding 50/50-splits between Russians and Japanese, like the next one (see below) or batch-wise for one side (i.e. around four sets that belong to each other for example four sets of ragged Russians).
There might also always be the odd set sneaking in depending on mould space and Paul's schedule.
WOW! Are you going to make Artillery, Machine guns and Calvary for this conflict?
Also how long would the Japanese, be using this style of uniform.
Next on the list are MG teams for the both Russians and Japanese and a set of standard-bearers and buglers/drummers, also for both Russians and Japanese.
After that, artillery (the Putilov 7.62cm M1902 for the Russians and the Arisaka 7.5cm for the Japanese) shouldn' be too far of after the a.m.
I hope to be able to also get some cavalry done at some point but that'll be a major investment as I would want them to by 'complete'. Planning so far would include six to seven sets for each cavalry type/uniform variant (to my knowledge there were two Japanese cavalry uniforms in use and at least three Russians types).

This is Great!
I might start my own RJW, project when I get the funds.
When did the Japanese Change over to the Kaki uniforms?

This is Great!

When did the Japanese Change over to the Kaki uniforms?
According to Osprey, the Japanese first began issuing factory-manufactured khaki uniforms in June of 1904 directly following the Battle of Yalu River. Prior to that, it's likely that some Japanese soldiers dyed the white, pre-1904 summer uniforms khaki much like the Russians did with their tunics.
Priority for the new uniforms was foremost for the infantry, followed by the cavalry, and finally for the artillery. As such, it is perfectly historically accurate to paint up an army with a mixture of uniforms if you so desire, both for delayed shipments to the different branches but also because some units either simply didn't receive them due to logistical difficulties or refused to besmirch their honour with camouflage.
-
Sounds Pretty kool to me, Thinking of makeing most in Khaki, only a few in the blue uniforms.

Are these figs compatible w Artizan FFL and Perry British Colonial for a fantasy "Great Powers in China" game?
-
Also, do you think you might have a US distributor of your fine mins? :D

They're Paul Hicks sculpts, so they're perfectly compatible with Perry figures. Mike Owen's Artizan FFL are a bit taller and beefier, though.

I found two sets of Perry Naval Brigade miniatures, here are some quick and blurry (sorry!) comparison photos:

No Artizan miniatures in my lead pile, though. :?
Also, do you think you might have a US distributor of your fine mins? Cheesy
So far not. I'm actually not looking for one right now, though. I first want to develope the range a little bit further and I'm also a little bit discouraged by the whole legal side when working with distributors. But I will have a look into it later this year, when I hopefully get my breath back a little after this term at university among other stuff. ;)
Meanwhile, I have already sent quite some shipments to North America and never had any problems and postage is quite cheap using airmail (only 3.50 Euros for up to 500g). (But I know it's the potential custom's hustle that bothers people the most. :?)
-
Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe if you declare your goods as toys, they are exempt from customs duties in the US - at least I seem to recall reading something to that effect in the past.
-
Thanks! I was just checking. I know this is a new venter for you and I really like what I seeing. So I will just have to seend some money your way next time I get paid then. :D
-
Thanks for the quick response on the Perry comparison pix.
-
On the import/export theme I've imported painted figures from DPS in Hong Kong many times and never paid any duty, all the boxes have tin toys written on them where it says 'description' which might account for this. Beautiful sculpts these Russo Japanese figures.
-
Finished off the set of Japanese infantry I originally started the thread with.

Just wish I had some terrain to photograph them against.

Absolutely top notch, I do not think these can be surpassed :-* :-* :-*
Only two downsides - they are not mine and I dare not start my own as they will only pale in comparison

It's great to see a big unit of them. :)

Did the Japanese uniform change significantly between this war and 1914? It might be fun to pitch these chaps against the Boche in China.

Hi Plynkes,
Please have a look at this blog-post:
http://tsuba-miniatures.blogspot.de/2011/12/tsingtaotsingtau.html (http://tsuba-miniatures.blogspot.de/2011/12/tsingtaotsingtau.html)
Basically the only differences I can spot are the predominant use of puttees instead of gaiters (although some RJW-photos already show puttees in use but clearly in the minority) and the caps look a little bit different somehow more 'squashed', but that might just be the photo.

Thanks, Maichus.

I really like the Russians.
Had to make a few changes to my colour recipes for these as I had been relying heavily on GW's old Foundation range so these use a lot more Vallejo Model Color. Got a decent match I think.
As usual I wish I had some terrain to photograph them against but my dumb blue back drop will have to do.

Gorgeous!

Fantastic paintjob! 8)

Beautiful paintwork as ever. The Russians are particularly lovely.

Really nice, you certainly don't make it easier resisting those beautiful miniatures ;)

The tunics on these used a base coat of vmc german camo beige ww2 and highlights were done with vmc medium grey, stone grey and silver grey. All finished off with a thin wash of old GW devlan mud.
Trousers were a base mix of vmc german field grey ww2 and black and highlights were more field grey and a little stone grey. A thin black wash was used at the end.
Anything else needed? :)
-
And while I'm at here are another set. Charging Russians.

I know I'm forever resurrecting this thread but I've just finished another unit of Russians for a client.
And here's the unit with the other one I did last month (along with a Japanese medic and casualty from the same commission). Not the best pic but hey ho (that GW battlemat really does reflect the light).

That's some darn fine brushwork Sir! :-*

A little more threadomancy for some Japanese flag bearers and buglers. The flags are Flags of War (with my own decals added for regimental numbers). Had a bit of a mare with the varnish on one of the flags after it frosted (think there may have been a little white spirit still on my brush) so I had to overpaint the red areas. I think I got away with it though.
[EDIT] New photo with the regimental numbers the right way around ;)
-
Very nice indeed :-*
I'm afraid to say that the regimental numbers are wrong. They would of had a numeric system in the corner. I can't remember the font but I can check when I get back from work tonight :) (the flags should be more on the square side also).
cheers
James
-
Hi James,
Please do have a look. It would be very helpfull to know.
I got two Japanese books on the subject, that both show the flags this way.
Also, surviving photos show flags this way, admittedly most of these were issued after the Russo-Japanese War.
For example here's the Flag of the 80th infantry regiment (which was founded in 1916, if I'm not mistaken):
-
Real eye candy.... :D
-
I'll take a picture from the book I have when I get back :)

James

:o Wonderful work as usual. What photography set up do you use?
-
:o Wonderful work as usual. What photography set up do you use?
A crap one. lol
Two cheap ass desk lamps from Argos with daylight halogen bulbs in that have to be placed so close to the models they're only barely out of shot.
-
Hi James,
Please do have a look. It would be very helpfull to know.
Bollocks, got that wrong I'm afraid. I mixed up two photos of different flags ::)
It's the regimental name in Chinese characters written by the Emperor not a number, my apologies :(
It should be a bit squarer with purple edging instead of blue :)
cheers
James
-

I still need to do a slight fix though! No one noticed I put my decals on upside down. ;)

Now you mention it... ;)

Time to dig up this old thread again seeing as I've just finished painting a few more packs for Tsuba. All Russians, Ensigns (minus flags for now), musicians, orderlies and wounded, and some more firing troopers.
With all the RJW stuff I've painted being spread throughout this thread I should point out that I've got an album of all the finished pics in my gallery (http://stonecoldlead.webs.com/apps/photos/) on my website.

Splendid :-* :-*
cheers

Wonderful brushwork. :-*

замечательный!! :o
(Apparently, according to google translate, that means wonderful! Apologies if I've just called you son of a turnip or something!!!)
-
Fabulous tonality. Really well done :)
-
Completely gorgeous. Wonderful blending of colours on what could otherwise be some fairly drab uniforms. :-*
