I know I'm forever resurrecting this thread but I've just finished another unit of Russians for a client.



And here's the unit with the other one I did last month (along with a Japanese medic and casualty from the same commission). Not the best pic but hey ho (that GW battlemat really does reflect the light).

A little more threadomancy for some Japanese flag bearers and buglers. The flags are Flags of War (with my own decals added for regimental numbers). Had a bit of a mare with the varnish on one of the flags after it frosted (think there may have been a little white spirit still on my brush) so I had to overpaint the red areas. I think I got away with it though.

I'm afraid to say that the regimental numbers are wrong. They would of had a numeric system in the corner. I can't remember the font but I can check when I get back from work tonight (the flags should be more on the square side also).

Please do have a look. It would be very helpfull to know.

I got two Japanese books on the subject, that both show the flags this way.

Also, surviving photos show flags this way, admittedly most of these were issued after the Russo-Japanese War.

For example here's the Flag of the 80th infantry regiment (which was founded in 1916, if I'm not mistaken):
