Russo-Japanese War - lovely 10mm game pics
« on: 08 August 2024, 06:26:04 AM »
The Russo-Japanese War probably doesn't get wargamed as much as its scale and importance deserve. Scott Blair is putting that right. Because its battles were so big and bloody, he's giving it the "Bloody Big BATTLES!" treatment and developing scenarios and RJW-specific rule tweaks for BBB. He encouraged me to share these pics of his most recent game. (First post of two because of file size.) Figures are 10mm Pendraken (mostly actually commissioned by Scott, I think) apart from the 1:1 scale one under the table.

Great stuff

I have lots of the Russians from this range for WWI usage - and they are great figures!

@fred: maybe this can inspire you to get some more use out of your WWI Russians?

@dickiegrantham: what about those Japanese in blue, with their rising sun banners?

@basementboy: glad you like!

Very nice terrain. I'm jealous.
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Scott here!

Thanks for the comments all, much appreciated.

Yep, quite green and beige, but I wanted to reflect the sandy and green landscape found in a lot of Manchuria, not least because the terrain drove some aspects of the fighting in quite interesting ways.

For example, the early war Japanese in their blue converted to a more sensible khaki and the Russian artillery often had to dig in against light soil colours which made them more conspicuous.

Currently working on early War Japanese cavalry. Blue tunics and red trousers. My new Russian infantry and cavalry will have a fair few flags as well, even if historically, they were carried cased as befitted holy relics blessed by the Tsar. My growing Cossack hosts are pretty colourful too.

If you think this is beige you should see my Boer War British !

Vincent, lovely to hear you along with Chris on the podcast with Jared. Delighted to make your online acquaintance now. The terrain is a mix of stuff built over many years collecting and with a view of creating a nice pool of models that can be used across a range of games. The buildings are in fact 6 mm from Timecast and they serve from WW2 to the Great Northern War in 6 and 10 mm games.

Fred, I agree with Chris. Try RJW with your WW1 guys. In fact I am hoping to do WW1 using some of my RJW, possibly fighting the Turks and Germans.

Much more to come!

Keep your eyes out for more.

Scott
