<me idiot>Orginally posted in Modern. D'oh. Cut and paste here to rectify. </me idiot>
With my carefully cultivated self-discipline cast to the wind, I realise that I am now a wargaming butterfly...... :o
I have started another project that will run concurrent with my late medieval 'big build'.
I just couldn't resist the LAM "Heroes" pack any longer and and so have dived in and bought them plus the "Old Men" and a few others from Hasslefree, most of which will need some degree of conversion as this will be a winterised game. (I also plan to sculpt a few minis of my own and it just so happens Hasslefree has a comp on..... ;))
Why winter? I can't deny that the Crooked Dice 'mountaintop' board unveiled on here and displayed at Salute is a motivator!
The project will feature individuals and gangs fighting the elements and each other to survive. The rules and the terrain will be inspired by my Aliens project, but no Xenomorphs, Terminators, etc. For some Aliens flavour see here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=34770.0) and here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=37419.0).... images and report courtesy of Captain Blood.
This game will follow a road with buildings to each side, the rear of the buildings open for player access. Beneath the buildings will be basements and sewers, also open for player access. The terrain will be built onto 3 plinths, each 60cm by 60cm, to give a road 1.8m long. As there will be 3 plinths they can be rotated on two sides, giving 18 different combinations of the three together. Buildings will include offices, flats/houses and shops with terrain features including a railway line and river.
Two of the plinths, showing the long cavities for the underground sections that will be beneath the buildings:

For the buildings I will be trying a new (to me) technique of which more in due course. As for electrics, I expect I'll light the tunnels with LEDs but not sure what to do on the surface .... maybe some flickering fires? Street lights would have looked great except it's PostApoc!
More soon..... ;)
-
Check these out for flickering lights :

more info and a video on the LED here (http://www.evilmadscientist.com/2011/does-this-led-sound-funny-to-you/)
I've been thinking on getting me some of those to create firemarkers, but considering the length of my to do list... :(
-
Steve! You've abandoned the Wars of the Roses so soon?!!! :o :o :o
;)
Heh heh heh... We're all butterflies here my friend (and a few caterpillars) :)
Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one...
Does this mean no Stokesay Castle after all? :'(
-
Underground overground, wombling free, the wombles of post apocalyptic wimbledon common are we!
Looking forward to this, but like most of us, did you ever finish your aliens project off?
-
Welcome to the world of the butterfly lol
Now, what else can we tempt you with ;D
This does look incredibly promising though, up to your usual high standard and level of thought and detail.
How post-apoc are you going though? Is it just a bit abandoned and overgrown or is it a more cobbled together, Mad Max feel?
cheers
James

Arhh Mr Butterfly, there you are. ;)
I don't normally frequent this board, but I saw your post and thought whats Steve up to now. lol
This sounds like a great project, I really like your idea of accessible sewers etc. Can't wait to see more. ;D

Now there's some figures I'd like to see. lol
As to the planned game Mr Invader, I like the sound of it and look forward to seeing your progress.

These boards should look really good!
The vac-formed styrene cladding that you're thinking of marketing - I'm guessing it would also effectively act as a template for the buildings as well?
-
I hoped you'd say that :D
-
Looking good, I like fact you can access all parts from the rear (No jokes pleased). ;)
The photo showing the basements and sewers below is particularly effective. I can't wait to see it develop further.
-
And he's off :D
cheers
James
-
That looks really promissing; I'll be following this with interest... 8)
-
This looks great!
-
NB: The following cardboard mockups are mockups - finals being in foam board, styrene and planked floors, etc!
Oh- I kind of like the cardboard ones. ;)
-
I take it a mini Stokesay Castle has gone by the board then? :'(
I hope you're going to weigh those buildings down with lots of money :D
-
I'm looking forward to watching this develop, it's sounding rather exciting. You do appear to have all my best efforts at homemade buildings judging by those earlier shots.
-
That looks like it's got great potential!
-
I meant to say that I do like the building facade you've selected. As regards the door, I don't think any of my buildings (homemade, PMC or Conflix in the main) have opening doors and it's never really been an issue. I think I'd prefer them to be openable but it's not a problem if they don't. I wouldn't give yourself extra work if you don't need to!
-
Yes, go with the fixed door for simplicity.
The facade shown would not be out of place in many other locations. I can see similar ones from my window now and I'm many hours travel north. It's a good adaptable facade you've gone for.
-
You need the use of a laser mate ;)
cheers
James
-
Hmmm..... Do I know anyone with one of those?! :D
You might :D
cheers

Looks really good. I've recently started drawing my templates on grids printed on A4 labels and have found it speeds construction massively. If I can do the same with your eventually downloadable templates, I'll be very happy!
-
This is going to look cool. So far so good. :)
-
looking good :)
-
Coming along a pace Steve 8)
cheers
James

Looking really good. Love the broken glass windows!
-
Lovely stuff, and if you're basing models in Hackney you won't have to change them much to give them the Post-Apocalypse feel. One question, where is the miniature used in your pics from?
Cheers,
Cholly
-
Excellent, you are a genius my man :)
-
@Cholly - it's a TAG special edition Chechen IIRC
Gret looking stuff with the building so far - really looking forward to seeing how the rest of the scenery for this project comes together!
-
The Interior cladding is a good idea - I was wondering about furnishings, and that would seem to be a fairly easy and cost-effective way of achieving them!
-
This is looking very impressive. The interior reliefs are a good idea too, they personalise a building without needing additional furniture, etc. but still allow for such items to be added. As it sounds like the terrain will be more than just a movement modifier or strategic objective in terms of searching, etc. then this adds both character and aesthetic. I woukd reckon there is definitely a market for these. Although resin tends to be a first choice amongst some gamers, it's not always affordable and not always flexible enough for some gamers and game styles (1:1 skirmish where interior play is desired or where a more modular kit of parts is required, for example). MDF is getting more common, and there are some amazing examples available but it does tend to favour certain periods more than others (ACW, FIW, Old West, etc.). This looks like it fills a niche in the post apocalyptic, zombie, pulp areas for those who want a lot of buildings, versatility in constructio and the ability to personalise and tinker. Just my initial thoughts! :)
-
Great work! :-*

of course in a very cold post apoc world, a lot of furniture would have quickly become firewood...
-
That is very true, and something which had quite slipped my mind... Which is odd, seeing as it's one of the things which is stressed so often in the (book) The Road, which I'm currently reading o_o
-
Nice result!
:-*
-
Very nice! and the instructions look simple enough that even some-one as cack handed at building scnery as I am should be able to get a good effect!
-
Look forward to picking these up :)
-
The buildings really do look excellent but just wondering who makes the gentleman with the AK47?
-
Wilkins,
I asked the same question earlir, he's a TAG chechen limited figure, think he was given free with orders a while back. He might still be available though.
Matt
-
he is still available- you just have to order £39 worth of stuff (including p+p) and request which freebie figure you want.
-
Or, I have one in my Sales thread, as Pete @ TAG sent me two lol

I've not long just finished reading this book, so much better than the film (still as grim) but much better.
Great stuff Silent Invader this is coming along nicely, I actually like the look of the mock up boards but I can't explain why.
-
looking really good
r u going to sell the shells by any chance?
-
thanks, yeah its they vac-formed shells i was hoping you'd sell :)
