As my "obsession" with Empire of the Dead grows - I've been seriously thinking about terrain.
I can do (like most gamers can) ruins and country-side table layouts. But I'm now looking to doing some London Streets - HOWEVER I personally do not want open spaces, posh streets, housing estates, mills, or any of that sort of layout (I'm sorry to those who do - I mean no offense, but I personally think battles with supernatural creatures simply would not happen out in the "open").
What I personally want to do is a tight and compressed environment, something like Millers Court (where the Rippers last victim Mary Jane Kelly was found) - a literal warren of flop houses and alleyways.
Almost like a Space Hulk Board really. I envisage it to be a 3'X3' ground level setup. Hopefully with some interior detail - some dwellings, maybe some abandoned buildings, a warehouse - I'm sure you know the general thing.
It looks like its out with the Depron Sheet and on with the Elbow Grease LoL!
I've never really built anything like this (though I have built a lot of terrain over the years) anyone got any advice (do's and dont's etc)

I siggest you buy some of those great Victorian house kits from LAF member Skrapwelder. I have a dozen of them and they are just perfect ;)
-
I read about him talking about them - are they out then?

Check out Pappa Midnight's victoria horror buildings, all scratch built and bloody lovely/inspirational.

Will Do!

I do modular Victorian terraces and a warehouse.

And obviously I can do custom work :)

Those are fantastic!

I suggest looking through Overlords "Geezers" Thread:

Loads of potential and How to build ideas in there. :)

I was talking to Linda (my Partner) about this, she's a "Ripperholic" too - we've been pouring through out (many) books on the subject, I'm probably going to use a combination of materials.
Foamboard, the Depron (or similar) sheet, embossed plasticard etc
Feeling kinda daunted and excited at the same time.
I know it's not going to happen overnight, but it's something I really REALLY want to do.

You know, I wonder if doing this as paper models first would be a good idea?
It would be a shame to go to all that work and expense, only to discover that you need the bigger roads and open areas to play the game properly.
Plus, it's a lot cheaper and faster to do it this way and decide how you want your potential layouts to be (and therefore use them as templates for the 'proper' ones later on).
Some links to useful free stuff here (http://papermau.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/two-houses-ho-scale-by-projekt.html) to get you started.

Actually, Linda had suggested doing a white card mockup (much like set designers do) first.
I need to really, I have plans of the layout of Millars court - and it's oblong rather than square, so I need to actually go right back to the drawing board first.
-
Well, if it's printed, you can use them in the meantime whilst building the final ones too - playing on "white" scenery is a bit mood-killing! ;)
(BTW, where are you in the West Mids?)
-
Wolverhampton (for my Sins LoL)

Ah, well, not too far then (I'm in Edgbaston, near the University) - perhaps we could arrange some EotD games in the future when you have some terrain and I have some crews! Rules are on their way to me - soon I hope. :)
-
I can do Countryside (Snapdragon) and Ruins (Manorhouse) - plus I have graveyard "bits" too.
So its a start at least!!!

We've opted for a 4 x 4 layout, currently using buildings from foamcore (and coffee stirrers).
Freestanding buildings gives versatility of altering the layout.
We have a grey "felt" cloth, some kind of industrial interfacing or perhaps a furnishing fabric, that will nicely cover the table and provide roads between free standing houses.
Picked up some cheap model railway lamp-posts through ebay.
The foamcore is a bit laborious, (peeled off the outer layer of card from the foamcore and drawing on brickwork by hand) not helped by me being out of action for the past few weeks, but we'll hopefully have the full layout finished for next term (school club open day).

I'm cheating quite a a bit with mine as Martyn at PMC games ( ebay name ) does a superb line in VBCW buildings that would also fit very well into EotD....
His pre-built and painted buildings are very reasonable and are well made. All they need are some posters, and some weathering to reflect how dirty cities were in 1888...
Maybe useful to UK based LaF'ers who want some good quality well priced terrain that's all ready to go....

@ Col. Aubrey Bagshot:
Considering that they are resin and come painted, that's a very reasonable price - thanks for sharing!

Before she abandoned us for the dubious pleasures of the roller derby, our own Audrey had an excellent tutorial about making foamcore city streets. While the original site where the information was posted (13th Realm) appears to be down, if you contact her directly, she may be able to send you the information. Her results were very impressive.

The PMC buildings aren't bad at all for the price and I use mine to fill the table. I order mine unpainted so I can spruce them up myself. The two in the background are Type A shops:

If you remember I posted at the start of this thread -
"What I personally want to do is a tight and compressed environment, something like Millers Court (where the Rippers last victim Mary Jane Kelly was found) - a literal warren of flop houses and alleyways. "
Then I got a message of Got an Email off Carl (Stoelzel's Structures) - Carl's response was -
"ONE WEEK. I hear ya, and I'm already a week and half into it, and it is coming quickly, thus far 180 pages of modular goodness, I only ask you wait ONE WEEK.
Carl"
I swear, it's like that man can read my Mind!

I am in contact with a professional modeler (previously working for construction companies and now involved in warhammer scenarios) in order to prepare a modular scenario based on the Victorian Age. It will be a section of a victorian city with several buildings, a cemetery, one park and a dock area. The city will be the central area of the diorama and it will include modular houses and shops, cobblestone roads, lamps and all kind of decoration and different stuff to create the perfect victorian mood. Once the diorama is finished I will post the pictures here and maybe he will be pleased to build something for other people.
Keep you informed!

I think that Pappa M was alos looking to do some paper buildings too. About time Al surfaced on this thread being honest! ;)
