I wasn't sure wither to ad this on to my workbench thread or start again here with this. I've had a wee thread on the go that all started with an idea to build a ruined Big Ben model(which Ainisty Castings picked up to produce) and it quickly got out of hand!! In the thread there was a sketch for a board and Crooked Dice have asked me to make the a smaller demo board they can use for their Zombie7TV.(no pressure then!! :'()
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=34783.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=34783.0)
The board they are looking for is only going to be 2x2 so I've had to whittle it down and lose a bit to save room and fit stuff on.
This is the original sketch...
...and this is what I'm going to shortened it down to....
I've not got much to show so far. I'm using Michi's excellent tube station as inspiration for my own underground..
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=12378.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=12378.0)
And this is where I'm at so far...

.and in the darkness ;)....
The jetpack cabinet and the cupboards are just to show where I'm planing to put benches and vending machines. I've also been bidding on cars on eBay and I've managed to win these...
I've also got a Morris Cortina and bubble car. All of which I plan to re-paint and use in an abandoned traffic jam on the surface of the board. The plan is to use my ruined Nelsons Column and base the surface on Google Map images of Charing Cross.
-
:o :o :o
That looks amazing already, cant wait to get the updates on this!
Oh, yes!
It is bringing my own ,imagined, version of James Herbert's Domain to mind.
;D ;D ;D
One thing worries me, though:
Has Charing Cross been destroyed without me noticing?
Google maps version of it..... ::)
;)
-
Great stuff Andy 8) Glad to see you back at it :)
cheers
James
-
That is looking amazing mate!
Damn you're good!
Cheers
Andy
-
oh yes :-*
-
Ah, this is going to look good - I can feel it. Idea stealing apparatus, ready!
-
so far...brilliant!
Let us see more ASAP!
-
Damn!
When I read the title I thought you were going to do all of London. :D
-
Terrific :-* :-*
You certainly dont do things by halves.
-
Cheers guys! I meant to ask, one of the things I would have liked to get would have been a 1:43/1:50 scale London bus but I can't seem to find one anywhere. Does anybody know where to get one ? I can easily find 1:76 ones but no 1:43! :'( :'(
Also what's peoples thoughts on the taxis shown? Which ones better? I kind of like the smaller one. Just because it's a small board and it doesn't take up too much room.
Thanks again guys!
-
Come on Andy ::)

The smaller taxi does look better, probably because 1/43 is a tad too big really (it would be my choice though) but then the mini looks large against it.
I have an Aston Martin DB5 you can have, send me your address. No 60's London should be without one.
Svennn
-
Suffice to say, I am rather excited by this :)
-
I bet you are. Stunning work so far :-* :-* :-*
-
Terrific planning, and great execution so far. Keep us posted!

Me too!! :D
Damn!
When I read the title I thought you were going to do all of London. :D
I'm going to need a bigger house! ;)
-
So thats what happened to the bits missing from the Zeppelin. Looking greater. Imagine you fitting lights :D
-
I've seen some of your stuff in the workbench thread. This is gonna be THE awesome! ;D
I like the smaller taxi as well, it's probably 1/55 in scale.
-
That's awesome, you are a living god! :-* Big Taxi, the small one is way too small 8)
-
I vote for the middle one with all the paint flaked off...
And now get that Eddieman... err I mean wickerman finished! lol
-
Fantastic looking project - thank you for posting images of the work-in-progress.
Tony
-
It's not that fantastic, now, is it... I mean, say, compared to my Stargate project! ;)
Yes this is most certainly a joke
-
Now that Kickstarter is usable in the UK, you should consider starting a business on it and have this as your mainstream job!
-
Bloody hell!!! :-* :-* :-*
-
Multi-levels boards are always impressive, especially when it's well made like this one !
-
Thank you all for the very encouraging comments guys. They always really help me to keep going with my wee projects!!
About the taxi situation, I'll do both for Crooked Dice and they can decide which to use. I'm torn between the two too. I like the small one because it doesnt take up too much room on a small board, but the bigger one looks more realistic!

I don't think Kickstarter is for people like me, it's more for gaming companies, is it not?
I've cut and glued the foamboard for the stairs. They've ended up longer than I had planned in the sketch!! :( I was hoping for a length of corridor to play along. I hope this doesn't negatively effect game play. You can just about get a clear LOS from the entrance on the surface to the corridor below...

Thanks again guys!!
Kickstarter is for everyone! Seriously
I've seen one guy trying to kickstart his career as a 'professional computer games player'...
... and surprisingly some people had pledged money to him!
-
Looks cracking to me :)
Perfect for an American Werewolf.
-
Yes. And furthermore, yes.
;D
-
Brilliant. Keep us posted with progress. :)
-
Magnificent! :o
-
Andy,
Are you going to have a train car sticking out somewhere?
-
Andy,
Are you going to have a train car sticking out somewhere?
Ray, I think that is a very personal question you are asking here.
-
Pretty amazing, I'm looking forward to more reports on this project!!
-
Absolutely brilliant display man!
-
Ray, I think that is a very personal question you are asking here.
lol
-
Andy,
Are you going to have a train car sticking out somewhere?
I thought using my wee train that Ainisty have cast up and have a crashed train in the station that's detailed and somehow shot up through the roof. I figure it would restrict gameplay through the station though!! ???
Thanks again for all the nice comments guys!!!
-
LOVE IT!!! if you decide to go american werewolf in London with it how feasible would it be to have the entrance to the subway circle the board on two sides above the sewers to mimic the multi-level run of the subway victim.? just a thought.
again that is fantastic work. :D :D :D
-
That would have been a great idea! I could've had one set of steps one elevation and one on another!! It would have given longer corridors to run along! ::) The only thing, the way it is just now I'll have an exit/entrance on three sides (subway entrance and two man-holes), that idea would only give me two in total!! :? I'm trying to stop dead-ends being created(dead ends for a zombie game!! Appropriate? :))
-
Andy,
If you had the train going through the roof of the station to ground level, it could be used as another route to the surface, survivors/zombies climbing up and down the carriage.
-
Oh Andy, yet another treat for us :)
What size are you aiming for? My mind is walking the same path for a Moscow Table, and I thought that your board should serve as a rather good inspiration. Especially how you handle the different layers and such!
-

It's 60cm x 60cm - something easy to store and transport to shows.
-
Truly awesome.
-
Nice, nice, nice!! Going in the "inspiration" folder for sure! :o
That first sketch has a bit of a Hellgate London vibe to it as well...
Oh, if I could ask, what is the brand and product name/code of the brickwork plasticard you used in the subway?
-
That is a really inspiring gaming board.
I can't wait to see it come along.
The multiple playable levels really add a tremendous amount to it.
-
This looks stunning. Well done. :o

Saw the measures in the first post. Can't be expected to read anything when the nice pictures dazzle me :D

Zombie James Bond anyone?
A huge thanks goes out to Svenn for sending me this! Cheers!!

Could I enquire your source of the Brick wall plastic sheets your using in the underground, from the first picture they seem to be rather large sheets?
-
Lovely work Andy - and congratulations Karl another showstopper on your hands.....

Meh....
:P
Bloody fantastic Andy. Look forward to seeing this pan out.

Thank you sir :) Andy's a genius!
I promise the tenner for that comment is in the mail!! :D
I've got a wee bit more done on the stair side. Corridor lights are fitted and bits filled out!

Still superb :-* The detail such as the edge tiling can only be applauded
-
I love this especially the lighting.
-
:-*
Very nicely done, Andy.
First board I've seen with an integrated underground subway system. Looking great!
-
wow, it just looks fantastic
but I still miss the Grafitti on the walls :D
regards
Zwerch!!!
-
This is the high side of outstanding sir! A small Easter Egg suggestion might be an unexploded German bomb from WW2 hidden somewhere along the edge. I love tables like this where new details pop out. Again, Very nice job so far!
Snitchy sends.
-
lol lol lol the buried sword and shield are a nice touch… as are the two barrels. An unexploded WWII German bomb is a good idea though 8)
-
The two barrels are going to be painted up as toxic or explosive and I've got two hand grenades buried beside them. I had thought about the WWII bomb, I just need to find the right model for it. I had also thought of a few more things I thought might be funny/interesting...
Thanks again for the nice comments guys!
-
Looking great :-* :-* :-*
I may have some spare 1/48 scale WWII bombs.
-
Just looked at your pIcs, I'm selling some terror-cotta warrior zombies currently if you were interested. Coming on really well, well done.
-
:o :o :o
I had not looked for a couple of days and you have progressed this far already!
Amazing work, Andy!
Those underground shots with the lights on look amazing and you have not even finished that area.
Stunned!
:-* :-* :-*
-
You need a skeleton in the ground. Preferrable a mammoth or perhaps a human skeleton with devil horns...
-
WOW! What a wonderful project !!!!
-
For a buried skeleton, perhaps a bug-demon, like from the Quartermass films?
This is a staggering work of detailed genius. I love it!

Awesome - are you going to get Danny Boyle to direct the post-apocalypse openeing ceremony?
-
I missed this thread! :o
Impressive job with a superb result, Andy. :-*
Keep going!
-
Been away for a bit so missed the various updates but it's progressing nicely :-*
As most other people have mentioned, it's the little details, drawing your eye in the make it great 8)
cheers
James
-
As with Jimbib, I go away and this is what happens! Holey moley Andy! :-* :-* :-* :-*
This looks great and no wonder Karl is salivating! Going back to your question about the black cab I'd go for smaller. I try and use smaller vehicles in my Quatermass games as they take up less room and give the buildings around them more scale if you know what I mean.
-
I love LAF_ Just as I think wow- that is the coolest board I have ever seen someone else comes along with something that trumps it! This one takes the biscuit! I thought that it was fantastic before you added lighting, now I can't beleave my eyes! :-* :-* :o :o :-* :-*
TOP MARKS AND THEN SOME!
-
The updates are looking fantastic.

Just looked at your pIcs, I'm selling some terror-cotta warrior zombies currently if you were interested. Coming on really well, well done.
Do you have any pics of them? I tried putting 'terra-cotta zombies' into google and one of the first pictures I got was this :D.....
I've been a wee bit busy with 'real' work lately so it's not coming along as quick as I'd like. I've ordered embossed plastic card brick work to do inside the sewers, so it should look a lot better than this when finished....

That's going to be coke cans underneath the vending machine once it's painted. They're glued to the underside of the machine and it's going to be left loose so the station furniture can be rearranged. And thanks to my brother for the wee bits that make up the shape of the UFO! I don't know if I'm taking it to far with putting that in!?!?! ???
-
That UFO is pure genius! 8)
-
I agree, UFO for the win!
-
Love the detailing
lol
Couple of boring questions for you:
Is the baseboard 6mm MDF or thicker?
Do you get much warping or is it braced in some way?
What glue are you using for the plasticard, and do you get any reaction when gluing plasticard onto plasticard?
-
(http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv179/andym2105/6fb41a4e.jpg)
those survivors wield some serious...oh never mind lol
And thanks to my brother for the wee bits that make up the shape of the UFO! I don't know if I'm taking it to far with putting that in!?!?! ???
No at all. Wether people like it or not, it's definitly a conversation starter.
It sure made me laugh 8)
-
So running under one side is the tube station and under two other sides a sewer system.
Way, way, cool!
-
Probably a bit late but could you add a secret underground lab where the outbreak started from?
-
I'm sure I'm repeating myself, but your stuff is beautiful!
-
Probably a bit late but could you add a secret underground lab where the outbreak started from?
Or an olympic venue?
-
I agree, UFO for the win!
yep just like Quatermass :D
-
Probably a bit late but could you add a secret underground lab where the outbreak started from?
Oh bugger!!! That would have been a GREAT idea!!! I'm gutted I can't fit that in!! :'( :'( I'm going to need a bigger board!!
Thanks again for the reeeeaaallly nice comments guys!
-
And thanks to my brother for the wee bits that make up the shape of the UFO! I don't know if I'm taking it to far with putting that in!?!?! ??
Not at all: after all, they found a UFO while building an underground station in the film version of Quatermass and the Pit.
-
Oh bugger!!! That would have been a GREAT idea!!! I'm gutted I can't fit that in!! :'( :'( I'm going to need a bigger board!!
But you could always build a second board to put all the extra ideas in..... ;D
-

I'm sure that someone with your prodigious output will find a way to incorporate it into another board! ;)
-
Stunning - any chance of this being at Salute 2013?
-
But you could always build a second board to put all the extra ideas in..... ;D
How about the opposite riverbank ?
-
Stunning - any chance of this being at Salute 2013?
It's for Karl so I'd count on it being there (although he is going to need a bigger van for all these games).
;)
-

A double decker bus might be appropriate.
If he converted the bus to include living accom etc, he could tour...like a 7TV studios version of Summer Holiday
-
Wow! Great job on the board... Looking forward in following this project.

What glue are you using for the plasticard, and do you get any reaction when gluing plasticard onto plasticard?
The MDF is nailed and Pva'd in place. By the time it's nailed to the surface and base board and the sides to each other it's not ever going to move! The plastic card is stuck in place with cheap bostick glue. I found this by accident when I asked my goodlady to bring me home some superglue and I got that instead. But I found it so much better than the superglue for this!
I've had some real trouble with track!! Ogauge seems to be the right size but seems expensive! I thought somebody somewhere might do rail that copies the underground system, but I can't find anything! >:(

I've had to settle for this....

...here I've used HO gauge track, ripped it of of the plastic sleepers and used bits of plastic card and sprue to make fixings and insulators. I've still got to clean up each end.
I've also received an order from Antenocities and I've started the sewers as well...

I've also got the edges of the tubes for the sewer to hide/clean up!
Cheers again guys!
-
Great stuff Andy 8) 8)
Just a tiny bit of advice, don't use oodles of Bostick (other contact adhesives are available ;) ) with styrene sheeting as the Bostick is a solvent and can make the styrene warp/bubble.
cheers
James

top stuff...
-
Oh Andy dear, this is marvellous! :-*
And I really envy Karl and Graeme for receiving this gorgeous table!
-
Great additions since I last made my way over here.
It is coming along ever so well.
Without a doubt this is starting to shape up as the best board I have ever seen.
It is, quite, simply, amazing.
All the little details are really adding up.
Love the UFO!
:-*
-
really nice, looks better and better. I think the ufo is a little bit over the top, but hey, its cool :D
One thing i`d like to know, where did you get that momument on the top right corner of the table? Have been looking for tometing like that for a long time.
regards
Zwerch!!!

Is Parabellum in Birmingham still going? They used to stock S gauge track (approx 1/64). Not that that looks much like the rails in the Tube, either! I don't think that anyone's going to complain about your HO stuff, though - we'll all be too busy drooling.
-
Just gets better and better! :o :o :o
-
I don't often wander into here, but I just have to say that this is a brilliant project 8) :-* :D

The rail is looking a lot better.
Sewer is starting to come together
-
Coming along nicely Andy. Is the plastic sheeting you're using for the sewers from Antenocitis? I like the uneven look about it. Also how do you hold the plastic sheeting in place when you bend it and glue it? I've got clamps (awaits an amusing quip from Malamute) but they'd be a bugger to use on a board like this.
Jimbibbly, I could have done with that advice a few months ago :(
-

I've had absolutely no hassle with warping at all!! This the glue I'm using if it's any help....

Before the card is placed into the sewer tube I just bend it round on its self, roll it up, and the glue it in place. No clamps required!!
Wow! Great job on the board... Looking forward in following this project.
Love the UFO :-*
I'm afraid the UFO has to come out! By popular demand.....and it is a wee bit over the top and a distraction from the game!!!

I'm afraid the statue I'm using, Zwerch mit Ohren, is scratch built! I can't remember where the knight model is from. We all got a gift from the very nice Silent Invader at last years BLAM and that model was with.

No! Just a saved favourite link to Antenocities Workshop and a melting credit card!! ;)
I've got one side of the Charles I statue done. It's nowhere near perfect and I can't work out what's underneath the cherubs!!!
This is what it's supposed to be....

The miniature used for the statue is a Ex Illis knight, I got mine free when buying the French wargame magazine Ravage years ago.
-
Oh my giddy aunt, that's good! :o
I'm not sure how much Charles would like those French fleur de lys on his shield, but I guess we always knew he was a closet Papist! lol
This is such a great looking project. :)
-
Since the UFO is out and there is a hole there.........a couple of C.H.U.D.s having lunch in there? or maybe a cuthonian worm.....

What's CHUD? Don't worry I have ideas that I'm working on! ;)
-
That looks great :-* :-* :-*
Not sure what it is supposed to be. But your thing looks just right.
Are you leaving the helmet on or replacing with a bare head?
-
It seems to be two arms, although I don't know why!
I think I'll just leave the helmeted head on, I don't think my sculpting skills can stretch to making a proper 28mm Charles I!!
-
It seems to be two arms, although I don't know why!
Arms were quite common in heraldry but I'll ask one of my mates in the regiment and see if he knows.
Looks great though :-*

I think I'll just leave the helmeted head on, I don't think my sculpting skills can stretch to making a proper 28mm Charles I!!
Perhaps you could leave it headless. It'd be appropriate.
This may seem like a daft question, but why not use one of the models of Charles I that are commercially available (eg from Bicorne or Warlord)?
-
The French knight was just a model I had lying around I was never going to use! It saved me trying to buy anything! (money's tight with a wedding planned for next year!)
BTW , I've never heard of any of those films!!!!!
Arms were quite common in heraldry but I'll ask one of my mates in the regiment and see if he knows.

Cheers James! I meant to ask as well, this is the picture I've got for the back of the statue, what the hell is that supposed to be? Is that a lion on one side and a dog on the other?

With a crown on a chain round its neck (while the lion has a crown on its head). These are still the supporters of the Royal arms.
This nice clear photo claims to be Chuck One's arms from 1634:

Loving the roundabout :)

Coould you not use one of the other heads you have on the sprus. Or I have some spare left over ones from the crooked dice minions.

Hmm, the Crooked Dice heads might be appropriate!
I've done the other side of the Charles I statue now as well....

Thanks to SteveF for the heraldry picture. I didn't copy it exactly because I didn't really like that unicorn and I left out the metal genitals!! I see his coat of arms has the fleur de lis on it!!

this is.....well....awesome :-*

Great stuff Andy :-* :-*

British kings were still claiming to be Kings of France as heirs of Edward III. Astonishingly, Charles II kept up that claim even when he was a pensioner of Louis XIV. It wasn't dropped until George III's time.

I actually like the fact that they're a little proud of the surface, I think it makes them more noticeable. Although I suppose the danger is that they get damaged during transport.
Cheers

Angled edge of a Black Monolith sticking out near them by chance? >:D
-
Very neat!

I love that!

Very nice indeed, do think they'd look good a little more set back into the earth but inspired. Maybe an alien skeleton with a clipboard too? ;)

I've been struggling for a 1:48 London bus.
There is ones out there, but they're really expensive. I tried eBay and came up with this....

It's a money box, but I reckon I can make it look the part. I just need to change the wheels, fill in the money slot, extend it in places and change the bonnet! I think it'll be worth it!
-
I think your picture is missing?
edit - sorry my mistake working ok now
-
I feel your pain Andy, ebay can be a nightmare for scales. When it comes to anything bigger than a van I ignore the sellers estimation of scale and ask them for measurements.
Looking forward to seeing how this comes out.
-
I just bought 20 dinosaurs that are all perfectly scaled, so sometimes you do get lucky. I actually bought 5 first to check the scales, but well... when I found that they were good I ordered the lot. So I guess I actually bought 25 dinosaurs.
And come to think of it the offer was 'buy 20 get 4 for free'. Uhm and that means that I bought 29 dinosaurs! o_o
-
That's a lot of dinosaurs!!!
I've finished the roundabout with the statue on it. I've added some rubbish and grass. I didn't want to add to much as I thought it would affect game play!.....

That's supposed to be missing posters on the statue newspapers around the base of the plinth. I'm not sure wither to varnish the statue to make it appear metallic?!?
-
Nice work. It works well, there is enough rubbish and weeds to get the idea across. I think the statue works well in black.
-
That my friend is a very fine creation indeed. The whole thing is going to more than a little special
-
I like the 28 days later touch with the posters there. Always wanted to do a piece like that for my zombie game. :D
-
Stunning paint job :-* :-* :-*
I like the poster idea.
What is the statue made of, the original one you are copying, would it not have been brass?
-
Looking good, Andy!
I'm not sure wither to varnish the statue to make it appear metallic?!?
Lots of statues which have an all marble plinth are marble themselves. So you could paint it the same color.
If OTOH, you want it to be metal, if it is bronze than it would appear greenish in color.
But I think you want a cast iron statue. Googling about I noticed that most cast iron statues are not all black.
Check this link and look at the flying Pegasus for some possible inspiration and a bit more definition on the statue:

-
Abso-fecking-lutely brilliant!
:-* :-* :-*
I think it looks great as it is, Andy.
I think varnishing it and making it too shiny may make it stand out too much from the rest of the scene.
I think that I would wait until I had everything together on the table to get an overall view before making those kinds of decisions.
Love the missing posters. A great touch!
I am really enjoying watching this come together.
Leaving the other elements of Trafalger Square in the background is nothing but a tease...... ;D ;D ;D
-
Superb. Keep at it Andy. I am agog to see the next stunning creation. The attention to detail is simply awesome. Really well done.
-
Beautiful!
-
Cheers guys!!
My thinking was, I was trying to roughly copy my reference pics. Charles I and the lions seem black and shiny....

Close up they are actually very brown with only small amounts of verdigris. From my limited knowledge, the casting process, polish and laquering gives a browned finish similar to the browning on old musket barrels.
-
okay. i have to know how you managed the multiple tones on the walkway...'fess up with it please :) :)
-
Lawks-a-lordy! :o
I'd somehow missed the Origin of Species update, so I get a double helping of modelling eye candy this time around. Luck me! lol
Not much more to say than simply superb. Love it all. :)
-
This stuff is amazing. Great job. :D
-
The statue looks great! A very watered down wash of orangey brown on the statue and then lifting the details and make it look like old painted wrought iron slowly rusting. :)
-
I think I'll just do that! I'll give them a brown wash and highlight them. I'm thinking my wee cars I'm going to do are going to be matt so the statues diffenatly should be as well!
okay. i have to know how you managed the multiple tones on the walkway...'fess up with it please :) :)
.
It's a doddle! Paint the whole thing codex grey(GW), wash with dark flesh/chaos black(GW) mix, highlight back with codex grey, use dark flesh and chaos black glazes( that's bacically where you have a really watered down mix of each paint and wipe most of it off your brush before you apply) to pick out certain slabs and then if you think your glazes are too strong you can re-highlight with the grey again and, of you feel like it, highlight it up to skull white(GW).
I hope that helps!
I've got a wee bit more done. Nothing exciting! The pavement at the Nelsons Column side has been built and I've made the underground entrance. I've also laid out all the stuff I'm planning on finishing for the board. I've not played many zombie games, is this too much or too little in the way of scenery? Will it be ok for playing on?

Repainting cars is kinda a hobby. :)
My trick for most vehicles is what you just described. Use poster tac to cover the windows (I use the white UHU tac).

Once they're dry I weather them as I would any other vehicle. Light orange browns washed into the recesses ads dirt marking. A very light drybrysh with one of the citadel dry paints (I like the Citadel Terminatus Stone) gives them a dusty finish. For white vehicles, a wash of old Citadel Dheneb Stone will give them a dirty weathered effect.
Here's what it tends to look like!

It's all coming together very nicely indeed.

Looking fantastic Andy!
With the Column pieces and Cars all freestanding, then it allows us alter position and number of items depending on different scenarios - and I can always add extra scatter as required.
-
Wow this board is amazing! What scale toy cars do you use? Also where is the textured slabs for the flooring from? I am just getting into non fantasy gaming and zombies is going to be the first thing I dabble in and this is great inspiration!
-
Amazing board ! Crashed train reminds me some MW3 plays on "Underground" where many wagons crashed into the platform.

The toy cars are all 1:48, 1:50 scale from eBay. If you put in a search for that or put in a search for corgi cars, they seem to be the right size.
All the embossed plastic card is from Antenocities Workshop.....

The crashed train, I'm afraid, won't be on this board. It wouldn't look right with the undamaged station underneath!
-
Looks great!
You need at least one taxi, though! ;)
-
The crashed train, I'm afraid, won't be on this board. It wouldn't look right with the undamaged station underneath!
How about the train coming up on the other side of the board, opposite side of the train station?
I'm thinking the train could come from another tunnel, not visible on the board.
Anyway, keep up the amazingt work. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished version.
-
I am really excited to see updates of this board... The roundabout is looking fantastic.
-
Of course, this being Trafalger Square, you are going to need zombies with cameras (ala tourists) and zombie pigeons, of course!
;)

I second this. ;D
-
How much time did you spend sculpting the t-rex skeleton?
20min on the head/body/tail/legs, then I had to wait for the ribs to dry and then 5 min to put the collar bone in and the top set of arms!
-
Hi all. I just thought I'd post more of my progress on here. I hope you don't mind, it just keeps me motivated!
I've got the pavement side with nelsons column painted, I just need to paint the traffic lights I decided to put after I finished the painting. I've also made the traffic island in the middle of the board. Next off is to finish the ruined building and Karl has asked me to make a plinth that nelsons column and the lions to sit on...

Cheers again for all the encouraging comments guys!!!

Fantastic work Andy :-* :-*
I really like the traffic lights 8)
cheers
James
-
I agree wholeheartedly with Jimbibbly!
An absolutely brilliant table, it will be a joy for whoever get to play on that. :-*
-
Wonderful stuff sir!
-
This is masterful, Andy!
-
Looking good :-* :-* :-*
I see you managed the sign for the underground.
-
The board looks gorgeous. Top notch work!
-
The top is looking great, Andy!
Nice touches there on the Underground entry! :-*
Though I must admit it is the integration of two levels into the board which I find really amazing. :o
-
Looking good :-* :-* :-*
I see you managed the sign for the underground.
Not really! I struggled painting what's there! Trying to paint 'underground' on a wee bit of plastic, trying to keep all the lettering the same size and fit it in, then try and copy it for the otherside, is the best I can do!! There's supposed to be 'subway' written twice on each face, either side of the 'underground' sign, but I couldn't make it look even slightly respectable!!! :'(

Thanks guys!
-
How about doing a google image for the sign and printing it out at scale?
cheers
James
-
Wot Jim said, plus a repeat of compliments earlier. :-* :-*
Whatever your next board project is, please, please, document it with the level of detail from your Zeppelin thread. Your skills are too valuable a resource and source of inspiration for the rest of us lowly mortals to be fed in mere snippets.
-
It is really starting to come to life now, Andy.
It is looking bloody brilliant.
I love the entrance to the Underground/subway.
Very evocative.
:-*
Now, about those zombie pigeons.......
-
Absolutely brilliant. :D
-
That looks bloody good. the painting around the tube entrance is great. Really detailed.
-
How about doing a google image for the sign and printing it out at scale?
cheers
James
My problem with that is if you have a cheap printer like mine it comes out all pixely because the writing is ssssoooo small!

I'm afraid that project was mostly Gamer Mac, I was just helping! He wrote it all up!

I have the opposite problem. I have a decent printer but lack the ability to do anything else you've done :D
-
Just awesome, wish i had a fraction of your skills Andy.
-
Thanks guys! A lot of the stuff I do I've learned here, on this forum!!
Anywho, I've got a wee bit further with some of the board. I'm trying to make up a building called Uganda House. I'm not making it to scale, it would dominate the board otherwise, and its going to be ruined! I'm also planning to add Crooked Dice shop in it.
This is the original taken from Google maps...

...and this is my adapted version, complete with ruined 'Dice' shop in the middle(still WIP)....

I like where this next section is going.
Oh, yes!
;D
I think having the flagpole on the side of the building would be a nice touch.
-
Talented B#####d ;D ;D
JUST F#####g BRILLIANT!!!! :-* :-*
-
:-*
Looking real good. The paint job on the column is fab!
Is that the James Bondish Mountain table (sorry I can't remember the exact name) in miniature there laying wrecked on the floor of the Crooked Dice shop?
All the little detailing... o_o

:o :o :o
Well spotted.
Genius!
-
That is well spotted a very nice touch!. Fabulous work :D
-
I do believe, if my old eyes are seeing correctly, that the cable car has broken off and lies on the floor by itself next to the board.
:o
-
Rocket ship and something else on the windowsill.....
:o
-
You know Andy, you have to make you're own board in there as well :D 8)
Looks fantastic mate :-* :-* (you also know you have to bring it to BLAM ;D
cheers
James
-
That shop interior is marvellous.
I seem to recall that a previous CD set-up had a scale model of the villain's lair in part of the model of the villain's lair used for the game, so recursion could be a theme!
-
Wow, that is a great job!
-
Cracking job as usual :-* :-* :-*
-
After this is finished it should be preserved somewhere and given a 'home'.
-
everytime I look it get's better and better, really well done, has top be one of the greatest bits ever on the LAF. :)
-
Holly cow!!! :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Oh sweet baby Jesus... Thank you...
-
Genius! It should be in the National Gallery :-* Christ! You're not going to build that to are you? :o
-
:-*
Brilliant.

WOW! Thanks for all the encouraging comments!!! :o :o :o

Yes and yes. ;)
The book case is going to be filled with Crooked Dice rule books. Theres also a wee turreted, six wheeled truck in the window.
You know Andy, you have to make you're own board in there as well :D 8)
Looks fantastic mate :-* :-* (you also know you have to bring it to BLAM ;D

James
I don't think a version of my board would fit in! :(
My plan was to try and get it finished for BLAM so I could give it to Karl when I'm down.
Thanks again guys!
-
You've excelled yourself this time - very inspirational

I'm managing to get there in the end! Things are getting painted and it's starting to look the part.

Wonderful Andrew. The gift that keeps on giving... :)
-
Lovely stuff :-* :-* :-*
Keep up the good work. You will get there in the end.
-
I hope there will be a great game report to do justice to this masterpiece! Really impressive and a pleasure to watch it take shape.
-
Bootiful.
-
Awesome work!!! :-*
-
It has been said so many times before, but this is amazing work, Andy.
This is possibly the best project I have seen on here.
The sheer vision, patience, attention to detail and ability has to be admired by everyone who follows it.
I really think that this should be made a 'sticky' so that future members can be equally inspired once it has been completed.
Genius, sheer genius!
-
Gorgeous gorgeous! :D
That Nelson's Column hasn't half come up well. I was passing Trafalgar Square a couple of week's ago, and bizarrely my first thought was of this thread and its relations on LAM! lol
-
magnificent.
:-*
-
"Starting to", he says! lol lol
-
Getting better with every update. ;D
Outstanding.
-
Wow! Just... wow!
-
Fantastic, all those little hidden details give it so much charm and character! Can't wait for the next update!
-
Thanks again guys for all the nice comments!!!
Uganda house is pretty much finished. Now onto painting. After that's done I'll use some clear plastic to make some broken windows and smashed glass.

I've also started painting some of the wee bits for the shop. Printing wouldn't have worked on such a small scale so all the books will need to be hand painted! Still WIP....

I've only got one more easy thing to build then it's onto full blown painting!!
-
:o
Bloody hell, Andy, it looks fantastic!
Superb building, but those books etc take the biscuit.
:-*
Bloody brilliant!

Even the guy who wrote the book never noticed. Great work :-* :-* :-*
-
Just phenomenally good!
I keep thinking "Well, he's really good at modelling, but I bet he can't sculpt. Or paint."
Damn it! There seems to be no end to your talent! :o
-
Looking good.
Everything seems to be falling into place now.
Can't wait to see further progress.

It is well known that the blues virtuoso Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads of US 61 and US 49 in Clarksdale in exchange for extraordinary talent.
All I want to know AndyM is..
What was your junction?
M74 junction 3! ;)
Even the guy who wrote the book never noticed. Great work :-* :-* :-*
There's a couple of wee things he might find interesting!! ;)
Last part of the main build, Karl asked for a platform/raised area for the column. This will bring it more in line with the real thing...

M74 junction 3!
Isn't that just off London Road! A cryptic(ish) clue?
-
Very great job. I love small details. I'll check the following steps.

That plinth looks the business! Thanks very much :)

It looks like there's just enough room on that plinth for a small group of survivors!

One of my dilemmas was finally solved today! :D
My brother and myself had a wee day out at Skelp Wargames show today. Seen as it was such a trek, we thought we'd make the most of it and see what modelling shops were about there. We found a great wee shop in Invergowrie. The Invergowrie Model Shop surprisingly enough!! ;) I've been hunting for a scale London bus for this and I thought I was going to have to settle for my converted money box(or spend £150 on a decent model!!!), I found this there for only £12.50!! Perfect!! It's 1:50 scale.....

And here's how it looks on my wee board and how far I've got so far.....

Breathtaking Andy.
Are you going to weather the bus or use it nice and shiny (like real London buses ;))
Didn't do a bendy bus as well did they? :D
-
Brilliant! Such amazing detail 8)
It'd probably be piss easy to come up with that authentic smell for the telephone box, a nice touch I think ;)
-
Wonderful stuff! And the bus is perfect!
-
Are you going to weather the vehicles, they are kinda "shiney" LoL!
-
nice find... you should have cleaned them out
-
Just see little books ....... :o wonderful !!!!!!!!
-
Thanks guys!
nice find... you should have cleaned them out
That would have taken a LOT of money!! :o There was at least 10 buses, plus there was a whole wall full of 1:50 scale cars, most of which were 70s-80s classics. Their stock, for a wee shop, was much better than their bigger counterparts in Glasgow!!
My plan is to have all the vehicles rusted and weathered. Karl showed a nice wee VW van painted in acrylics in another thread, I'll do the same here.
-
My plan is to have all the vehicles rusted and weathered.
Fantastic - Can't Wait!!!!
-
It'd probably be piss easy to come up with that authentic smell for the telephone box, a nice touch I think ;)
What I remember from a weekend in London ages ago, is that the phone boxes where pasted with postcard-like ads for adults. (dunno if this still is the case ?)
-
It's a stunner...... Awesome
Have you considered an Evening Standard seller's pitch? Opportunity for a news headline poster and a pile of wind blown papers?
-

Great idea!! Consider it stolen done!

That really looks the business Andy :-* :-*
Are you going for a few cyclists or motorbikers?
What I remember from a weekend in London ages ago, is that the phone boxes where pasted with postcard-like ads for adults. (dunno if this still is the case ?)
Yes, this is still the case but not so much as it used to be with the Internet and all ::) lol
cheers

I'm just using common knowledge and extrapolating ;D

-
Cracking stuff Andy! As simple as it seems I never thought of repainting vehicles with acrylics. I'll have to get me one of those buses.
Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
I'm just extrapolating
You can get help for that these days ;)
-
Just seen Zombies vs Cockneys, very funny, Richard Briars with a zimmer frame just about outrunning a zombie is funny as! Anyway that bus will serve as a great survivor's transportation vehicle, nice choice.
Makes me want to do something compact for my modern zed stuff like my Halo stuff. Oh well time doesn't allow at present so I'll jsut sit and drool alot at this thread. ;)
The Commander
-
Just googled Cockneys vs zombies and you are right: Very funny! lol
-
I missed this latest update somehow....now I know why I was getting the shakes!
This thread is like wargames Crack:
If you dont get your regular dosage, you are doing cold turkey!
Superb stuff, as usual, Andy!
Lovely!
:-*
In regards to the vehicles: Rather than painting them, maybe you should give the Modelmates range a try.
It is really simple stuff to use and it does not take long.
It would work well on those vehicles, the bus especially, to get rid of the 'shine' without having to repaint the whole thing.
-
that is a damn fine bit of work! outstanding, just simply outstanding. :)
-
Cracking stuff - makes me want to weep, it's so good!
-
Cheers guys!!
I'm trying to get the board finished by next week and I'm in full blown painting mode. I'm trying to get a decent colour for the sewer tunnel. I was thinking of orange brick, but I'd like it a bit dirty. I tried painting GW blazing orange over dark flesh but that didn't work,it's too see through, so I've had to add some foundation yellow to the mix. I think it looks alright once I used some hawk turquiose to mess it up! I also used some cheap house paint testers for the earth.

I also added a couple of wee signs to the building. That was a pain in the arse!!!!

:o :o
Looking fantastic, Andy!
Some really great paintwork going on there and that broken window is amazing.
Love it!
:-*
-
:-*
That is amazing. Well done. Can't wait to see the finished result. Lots of pics please! :)
-
That's a really nice idea of making diferent "levels" in the same board. I like the fact you can run on surface, go in the tunner, and from there go in the subway....Really cool :-*
-
Beautiful work my friend :)
-
Sewer Walls look great!
-
Lovely project!
It has been really neat watching it unfold.
Truly worth all the buzz it has been generating here! :-*
-

You could always use transfer letters? Fantastic job by the way! :-*
-
On the connection tunnel between the sewer and the manhole, are the ladder rungs spaced to hold a figure's base, showing them i the process of climbing?
Like so many others, I've been watching this thread with delight and awe. Keep up the good spectacular work!
-
Fantastic job! Love all the 'hidden' little bits added here and there!
-
The tunnel PJ looks excellent, as in truth it all does.
The shattered window effect and paint job on Crooked Towers rounds it off nicely.

Just found this thread. Andy, you're insane. Insane being a compliment! I actually laughed out loud (getting some weird looks from collegues) when seeing the T-rex and its prey!
When finished I'd love to get some pointers and tips for the buildings (such as which materials used), as I want to make my own buildings too.
Respect man, respect.
-
Yea.. I also just found this thread and.. WOW this is bloody insane, one of the best tables I've seen in a long time.
-
Looking very cool, mate! :-*
Can't wait to see it finished. ;D
-
Somehow I've missed this thread until now. Simply fantastic work! 8)
-
I am truly inspired!! :o :-* :o I'm going to have to make myself one now... :)

You could always use transfer letters? Fantastic job by the way! :-*
I struggled getting transfers the right size! The letters are tiny!
On the connection tunnel between the sewer and the manhole, are the ladder rungs spaced to hold a figure's base, showing them i the process of climbing?
Like so many others, I've been watching this thread with delight and awe. Keep up the good spectacular work!
That wasn't the plan( but it does actually work! I tried it!) I don't think Karl would be happy balancing his nicely painted figures! ;)
The best tips I ever heard (and seeing the likes of Jimbibblys and Mason stuff proves these)...
TIP 1- if it's a ruined building, make sure there's enough waste material/rubble lying around, that the original building could exist.
TIP 2-if its a 'whole' building, pretend you live in it. What would you need/want? Barrels of fresh water? A coal shed? Would you have plant pots for decoration? A garden? Would you have a dog? Where would he stay?etc........
Looking very cool, mate! :-*
Can't wait to see it finished. ;D
Me too!!! ;)
Thanks for all the nice comments guys!!
The bus I bought is now finished. I think painting it up makes it 'fit' better with the rest of the board.

I'm also a bit panicky now! I've painted all the sewer and( the hit or miss part) put in the gloss varnish to act as the water!! :( I'm hoping the white, when dries, goes clear!!!!

Three days to get it all done!!!! :'(
-
I'm also a bit panicky now! I've painted all the sewer and( the hit or miss part) put in the gloss varnish to act as the water!! :( I'm hoping the white, when dries, goes clear!!!!
As long as it's not too thick or done in layers where the lower layer hadn't fully dried, it'll be fine. Might take a couple of days is all. If it had been matt varnish then you'd be in trouble. Worse case, it's a sewer, just add washes and some rubbish to cover any side bits that don't clear up properly.
-
Very detailed and nice. :)
-
Don't worry, Andy, you will sort the sewer. :)
The bus came out really nice and the dinosaur chase is a real hoot!
-
I think the white looks good
Reminds me of alll the layers of fat and scum that you hear about lining the sewers
That and it looks....yukky in a sewery type way :D
-
Love the bus; a very nice paintjob indeed. It looks like you've included bloody handprints on the upper windows which is genius. I had the same whitening issue with a well I did and it did take about 3 days to dry. I think the white sruff adds a bit of extra grime to it though. Excellent work.
-
Go on Andy!! You can do it. ;D
Marvellous stuff. Love it all. :-* The bus looks great, definitely worth the effort painting it.
I'm sure the varnish will work out.
-
Fantastic Andy :-* :-*
You know it's going to get drool over it at the weekend :D
cheers
James
-
Bloody fantastic and all that bloody cream on the top :-*
-
Bloody hell. Andy, that is amazing!
:-* :-* :-*
That bus has really raised the bar.
The repaint is great, I think that you have done a great job with it.
It is not the easiest of tasks to make it look right.
The thing that takes it to the next level, though, is the smaller details; handprints, posters, misted windows etc.
Simply brilliant!
The sewer looks great too.
I wouldnt worry about any 'whitening', it is a sewer after all.
I imagine that a sewer after an apocalypse would be full of just about anything!
Superb work.
:-* :-* :-*
I think we will all have to wear masks at the weekend or, as James has mentioned, we will ruin it while drooling...
;D ;D ;D
-
Wonderful stuff Andy. Please don't drool on the pretty :) You lucky buggers will get to see it before me too!
-
I'm late to this thread, but I am so grateful to Mason for drawing this thread to my attention! Absolutely amazing work, Andy, words just aren't enough...
Sort of thing that makes one glad to be in the hobby. As Mason's 'invited other' (although we aren't a couple!) i will be lucky enough to see this at the weekend.
WOW!!! :-*
Bert
-
I think we will all have to wear masks at the weekend or, as James has mentioned, we will ruin it while drooling...
;D ;D ;D
I think you will need the mask to protect from all the paint and varnish fumes going about lol
Bus looks great and the white in the sewer does not look out of place.
-
You lucky buggers will get to see it before me too!
Don't worry Karl, we'll tell you all about it ;D ;)
cheers
James
-
Lovely weathering on the bus especially the windows. Coming along very nicely
-
Don't worry Karl, we'll tell you all about it ;D ;)
cheers
James
I couldn't think of a nicer bunch of people to keep it safe for me :)
-
Thanks very much for the nice comments guys!!
I think I'm in the clear. The varnish is drying clear, so panic averted!!

Looks amazing!
-
Really getting there :-* :-* :-*
-
Fantastic work Andy. That sewage looks rather realistic, I wouldn't send any of my figures down there ;)
-
:o
It just gets better and better!
:-*
As for the station being a bit darker. I think that works really well.
I am thinking Emergency Lighting due to the troubles upstairs....
;)

You have to show the write up for this, it looks like it's going to be somewhat stupendous.
-
Hopefully the posters and stuff bring it up colourwise...

Cracking stuff!
-
Just fantastic!
-
Just amazing. Love it.
A question if I may Andy. How did you achieve the frost/condensation on the bus windows? Also, did you apply this, and the bloody hand prints to the inside of the windows?
The lighting is spot on! But who is supplying the power! ;)
Cheers
Chris
-
This board just keeps getting better and better! :-*
Great work, Andym!
-
A question if I may Andy. How did you achieve the frost/condensation on the bus windows? Also, did you apply this, and the bloody hand prints to the inside of the windows?
I reckon he has made a tiny little vat-grown clone of himself to get in all those hard to reach places.
There can be no other explanation for his mad genius........ ;)
-
You beauty! Those posters came up OK :)
-
Excellent work!
-
That's the board now finished!!! :D
Thanks to my brother I now have a carry case to take down to London to hand it over. I've still got six cars to do but they won't give the postman a hernia!! ;)

Thank you very much for all the encouraging comments/ideas along the, I may still add stuff later and send it on in the post to Karl!
-
It has been great joining the ride for this amazing project, Andy.
A truly wonderful project to follow from start to finish.
:-* :-* :-*
A sublime finished article, and a great box to keep it all in.
Well done, bruv!
Now you just need to make sure everything is well protected against the inevitable drool that it will be covered in!
;)
-
I gotta say, this is one phenomenal piece of work! One of the finest boards I have ever seen! Well done! :o
-
:o Yes. One of the best boards I've ever seen. All props to you.
-
Great stuff.
All props to you.
What does that mean? ???

Words fail to be honest. I'ts been a joy working with Andy and watching it unfold and exceed every expectation.
I can't wait to start taking it out to shows, so everyone else can appreciate it!

Fantastic. I'd love to see this in the flesh, so to speak. Exceptional work by the clearly very talented Mr Andym.
-
Fantastic, Andy!
All them details have really made this thread worth following. And it has inspired me a great deal to get all those extra things added for my own stuff :)
So thank you!
-
Blilliant!
-
Great stuff.
What does that mean? ???
Kudos to you more palatable for you Phil? ;)
Looking forward to seeing this.
Lovely work, but get working on the next section. Assuming its modular? :D
-
Congratulations! That was a lot of work but it was truly worth it!
It's an amazing work of art! :-*
-
Stunning all round.
Whatever Karl is paying you, it isn't enough ;)
(Ooops - sorry Karl :D)
-
Very nice! All of the extra details are mind blowing! :o
-
The shipping container is too much! Just fantastic work man. Well done!
-
:-*
Well done!
It's a wonderful board! ;D
-
Congratulation for a work well done! Hope you’ll have fun playing games on this fantastic board 8)

Superb work.

that is awesome :o :-* :o :-* :o :-* :o :-* :o

The box is the best bit ;)
-
....... ;D
Speechless. Well nearly. ::) Absolutely brilliant Andy.
Look forward to seeing it up close at some show or other.
-
The box is the best bit ;)
lol lol
-
Absolutely awesome. I really want to see some pics of a horde of zombies shambling at a few well-armed marines protecting some young innocent child.
Definately a great piece I hope you are taking photos from every angle and in every form of light Andy so that you can remember every little detail you worked so hard towards.
-
Another one for the Hall of Fame. Brilliant and inspirational Andy.
-
Nicely done and finished off well with a superb little box.
I showed it to my Misses to and she thought it was rather nifty and she isn't really that big on wargaming apart from a little bit of dice rolling every now and then just to keep me happy! :D
Hopefully will get to see this in the flesh at Salute, if I am given time off by Field Commander Akula from my duties. ;)
-
I don't think I realized how small it was!
Wow, that's an amazing board... I love the subway tunnel, or whatever you brits call it... tube-something-or-other.
;)
Very nice work. You should be proud.
-
Now for a smashing AAR of the set with photos!
-
Even though the boards finished I still have some cars which I'm working through just now. First up is from a company called Del Prado. Nicely detailed and cheap. Nice model to paint...

...and I've got a couple of wee extras to give Karl as well. Ones a news stand(as suggested by Silent Invader. Cheers bud!) and a machine gun with a chewed off hand attached...

-
Nice job on the car, Andy, very realistic!
I like the wee additions too.
The newspaper stand should have the Evening Standard featured predominantly for a real Trafalgar Square look.
-

-
The car's superb. Love the little extras too. :D
-
Car looks great. Back head lights need fiddling with though, a bit too clean. Is it a die cast?
d
Don't forget to put a brick or large stone on top of those papers once you've got them painted, they'll blow away else....

Cheers man!! I was thinking 'Crooked Times' for the newspaper.

Only 4 or 5 more to do... ;)
-
:o
That is absolutely gorgeous, Andy!
:-*
Love the paintwork and the weeds in the bonnet are a touch of class.
They remind of a bird feeder in my garden, where the seeds that were in it have gotten so wet during the 'summer' that I now have a ball of grass in a cage!
They look spot on.
:-*
Genius.
Pure Genius!
-
Cars have really come up a treat :-* :-* :-*

The tiling in the tube, and on the storefloors are patterned plasticard right? Where did you purchase it from?

Those cars are mind-blowing! Wonderful work. What do you use for a basecoat? I've been painting some Hot Wheels G-Machines and they really do not want to take paint well.
-
Brilliant. :D
I'd meant to ask before, where are the phonebox and postbox from Andy?
-
They're wonderful!
-
Beautiful painting! :o
-
Oh man, those look great, as does the whole damn thing! Is the Union Jack on the roof of the real Mini freehand, or from the factory?
-
Those cars are mind-blowing! Wonderful work. What do you use for a basecoat? I've been painting some Hot Wheels G-Machines and they really do not want to take paint well.
Just simple Games Workshop Chaos Black spray.
Brilliant. :D
I'd meant to ask before, where are the phonebox and postbox from Andy?
All from Langley models. Be warned though, the telephone box was a bitch to build!! It's a brass etch and unless you glue the door shut there's no strength in the join to the main body!
:(

Free hand. That's the original condition of the mini in the last picture beside the two taxis.
Cheers guys!!
-
those cars are simply out friggn standing, like the whole board :-*
-
Superb stuff Andy, You continue to raise the bar. ;D
-
Personalised plates too, it's your attention to detail that makes me hate you :)
-
Just simple Games Workshop Chaos Black spray.
Awesome, I had cleaned the previous coat and just given it a spray before I read this, I'm glad I'm on the right track. :) It took wayyyy better. '69 Camaro incoming! :) Thanks!
-
This is true genius Mr Andym.
-
ferk, ding, buzz!
-
Cheers chaps!
Número three...

I've got two taxis to do. This is a Dinky Toys one. It seems a bit large! It's probably 1:43. My other ones a matchbox one(still to do.) and it's 1:50. I'll give Karl both and he can choose....

Very nice! I've got a few vehicles I was just going to touch up but seeing what you've achieved I think I'll go for a complete repaint.
-
Another great job, Andy!
It looks lovely all round, but those rear lights look rather special.
:-*
-
lovely work
-
The cars are amazing! :-* :o
Some of the best weathering I have seen!
-
Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant!

Lovely job

I´m very late to add my praise to the chorus but still... simply amazing! :-*
So much detail and to absolutely highest level I´m lost with words.
Need to go through the whole thread in peace... what a good way to spent a working day tomorrow :)
-
Very nice! I've gotta work on uping my skills. :D
-
I must admit that at first I thought the board might be a bit empty. But with all the stuff you are packing it with (including the latest and rather smashing vehicles), I guess I was silly to doubt.
You are going to be able to play all kinds of different types of games. Lovely.
-
I love the work you put into your bits, they are an encouragement to me to finish my work room so i can start bitzing again! :) :) :)
-
I'm not sur eif it's the black paintwork but that cab looks really sinister (to me at least).
Great stuff. :D

Thanks again guys!!!

Thanks again to Svenn for this car!!!

:o :o :o
You have certainly nailed the art of weathering jam-jars, Andy.
That looks bloody brilliant, and those headlights are perfect!
:-* :-* :-*
(Not to sure that 'Q' would approve, though! ;))
-
Suberb!
-
Seeing this (and having seen it in the flesh at BLAM) I get such a craving for doing the same in a Stockholm setting...
Sergelplattan in disarray with crashed sosse-containers (Volvo 740) all over the place...
-
Wow, that's the best of the lot so far.
Sublime.
Nice colour choice, and as said, the head lights are top banana :-*
-
Absolutely stunning work on the vehicles.
-
These will look the business on that table! Would love to see some shots of the whole shebang when the vehicles are finished ;)
-
The whole thing is just wonderful! Richard
-
Cheers guys!!

Excellent weathering on the car. How many more to come?
Seeing this (and having seen it in the flesh at BLAM) I get such a craving for doing the same in a Stockholm setting...
Sergelplattan in disarray with crashed sosse-containers (Volvo 740) all over the place...
That would be great to see... last time it was in disarray was after the ice-hockey world cup in 1995 ;) (sorry, had to).
-
Sergelplattan would be quite suitable for a post 1995 apocalyptic scenario since it is very emblematic and a bit of a urban nightmare as it already stands. Modernistic, many levels, stairs and ramps, infested with zombies and Jesus-freaks...

I am pretty sure I saw a funny montage somewhere...
EDIT: Here it is! Pretty cool, I think...

Sergelplattan would be quite suitable for a post 1995 apocalyptic scenario since it is very emblematic and a bit of a urban nightmare as it already stands. Modernistic, many levels, stairs and ramps, infested with zombies and Jesus-freaks...
Here it is! Pretty cool, I think...
It certainly is!
Go on. Build it.
You know you want to!

This is one of the most impressive miniature board I've ever seen!
Amazing!

....two easy one left now, a smaller scale taxi and a (heinkel?)bubble car. My problem with the last two is I need to strip them first. I'm going to try the 'dettol' approach, anybody got any experience of this?
-
Lovely cars. Love the license plate on the yellow one. Clever.
-
Hi Andy,
I've used dettol on a few Lledo with no problems. There are plenty of posts on the forum giving differing methods but this is mine. Caveat utilitor!
Get the original dettol. WEAR GLOVES!
50:50 mix with warm water in a sealable tub.
Disassemble car as required and place in liquid.
Seal and leave for two or three days, shaking occasionally.
When paint begins to lift when shaken, open lid and, using an old toothbrush or similar, scrub the paint off in the dettol. DO NOT WASH UNDER THE TAP! This causes the paint to turn to sticky gel.
When the paint has been scrubbed off, then rinse in warm water with a touch of washing up liquid.
Allow to dry.
Paint/assemble as required.
-
Get the original dettol.
Now which one is that? I've been looking for a good paint stripper ever since they changed the formula for Mr Muscle kitchen cleaner (making it crap for paint removal). Everyone says Dettol is the way to go but there are so many Dettol products on the market and the few I've tried haven't exactly impressed me.
Maybe a pic of the bottle so I know exactly what to look for? ;)

How do you achieve the Frosted/weathered look on your car windows Andy?
Cheers

Yet more quality used cars from Andy's Motors.
:-* :-* :-*
Now you just need to be able to reverse the trick on a larger scale and you could put Arfur Daley to shame!
How do you achieve the Frosted/weathered look on your car windows Andy?
I keep forgetting to ask you that....
Is it glue?

More superb stuff :o :-*

@stone-cold-lead
The dettol I use can be seen here - http://www.firstaidwarehouse.co.uk/xpp-dettol_liquid_500ml.html
The only problem is the figures stink for weeks/months afterwards, and plastic feels slightly brittle
-
a (heinkel?)bubble car
That is a BMW "Isetta" that you have there...

If it's the old Corgi one it's actually badged as a Heinkel - had two or three as a kid. The BMW/Isetta and the Heinkel were identical externally except for the badge on the front.

What Zemjw said, but if you wash in warm water with some washing up liquid and rinse thoroughly in lots of water, the smell goes in less than a week in my experience.

These may be the best cars I have seen! I hope I get to Salute to see this.

I knew Andy was making those monuments, but I only just noticed this thread now. Having read it in one go, I think I died... Andy can reanimate my corpse and Karl and run it as cannon fodder in a game on this incredible, phenomenal, stupendous, flat-out amazing board.

That's beautiful :)

Thanks very much guys for all the nice comments! It's a real encouragement to me!!!
The last two cars are done. I've only got the registration on the Heinkel bubble car left, but I've taken a total brain fart and ran out of ideas for I like!! :(
This is the smaller of the two taxis I'm doing for the project. It seems a nicer model than bigger one I've shown previously, except for the tail lights. There's not much definition there! Also I didn't know how to fix the plastic windows on this, I hope Karl doesn't mind!!! :?

Just the newsstand and machine gun emplacement to finish!!
-
I love the way you paint up these vehicles and I'm especially impressed with and envious of how you handle the headlights etc. The windows are also really well done and look much better than leaving them plain or painting then in black.
Used to have that bubble car myself but sold it on Ebay the other year. Got quite a nice price for it!
-
Those latest two look great, Andy!
:-*
As for number plate for the Bubble car, what about:
BUB ALL
NOT C5 (as in Sinclair C5....)
DEL BOY (it has got three wheels...)
-
Also I didn't know how to fix the plastic windows on this,
How about putting a couple jagged holes and then a crazed effect:

Your envious of me?!? I'd swap your painting skills With mine in a heartbeat!! The windows are easy once you dismantle the whole car bud!
Feck me!! I just checked those bubble cars on eBay! Some are going for £125!!!!

I hope you don't mind Mason, I went with something that seemed appropriate,'DONE 12', signifying the year the board was finished!
Thanks for all the support all the way through this guys, you all been a great source of inspiration and help!!!!

Mind!?!
How could I?
The news stand looks much better with the revamp.
Seriously well done, Andy.
This has been one of my favourite threads to follow since I joined the LAF last year.
Inventive, brilliant and genius come close.
Amazing vision, it has been a pleasure to watch this grow from the begining through to its finish.

Looking forward to your next project.

The cars are all dismantled before painting, so all I do is stipple/dry brush GW Rakarth Flesh on the inside where the window frames will be. Just around the edges bud.
So where is the photo with everything ???

I'm afraid I no longer have the board or any of the stuff!! That'll all be up to the new owner! ;)
Thanks again guys!
-
Only saw this thread for the first time today - just had to say, stunning work! :o
The board, the paint, cars, everything is just done to such a high standard - it really is amazing. :-*

Well done. Hoping I can make Salute next year to see it "in the flesh".

Fucking lovely, Andy!
Just a lazy question: Could you sum up all pics and important wip-stages in your first post? :) It's a matter of getting the references quicklier than walking through a thread 30 pages deep ;)
-
not sure about everyone else but i for 1 am a little gutted its finished, no more drooling over it as it progresses ...lol
-
Same here. I hope he starts a new project soon. But if I get into Post-apoc gaming because of that, I blame him :D
-
I finally got to see my wee board with all the stuff and miniatures across it! I was gutted that I didn't have time for a game on it before I had to head back to the airport though!! :'( :'( :'( :'(

I have to say I loved the figures they used for this! Scooby Doo and the gang, but the zombies were the best! My fav has to be the walking body bag!! lol

I think the crowds on the day were seriously mpressed with your 'wee board' judging from the remarks I overheard whilst having another dribble over it myself.
8)
-
It was 2 deep around the thing all day (trust me on this!) at least. Very popular board. Good day for the survivors as they won every game (although Thelma, Deirdre, spooky and poor Misty) all took turns in being zombie chow.
Everyone who saw the board loved all the little details. I was still spotting stuff on it at the end of the day when packing it up. Really glad I was allowed to look after it for the day. :D
It was a shame you didn't get a game in though, would have been great. What route would you have tried to get to Crooked Towers?
-
amazing job o_o
-
It seems James Bonds a really bad driver!
Judging from the crowd (the minis on the table), maybe James went out on a limb *pardon the pun* to save a lass or two, just is his customary thing to do?
It's one beautiful board :-* I wonder what has happened to all local Londoners, as the zeds seem to be from the countryside ;)
-
It was a shame you didn't get a game in though, would have been great. What route would you have tried to get to Crooked Towers?
I think I would have done Mister Bonds tactic, Grab a car and drive it straight up and through Crooked Towers window!
-
Fantastic board and I thoroughly enjoyed my game on it. I took the Shaky Gang and although I lost Dierdre early on to a ravenous Zombie onslaught the rest of the Gang went on a Zombie Bashing rampage and made it to Crooked Towers leaving a wake of mutilated rotters!!!
Again brilliant game and the Board has got to be one of the best samll interactive terrain pieces I have seen.
-
I fancied giving it a go, but it was always busy whenever I was anywhere near. I only just about managed to squeeze in to take a photo from one direction. I wanted one from the underground entrance direction as well but could never get near.
Got the 7th Voyage rules (and had a quick read on the coach home on Sunday) and the extra Minions I wanted - so it wasn't all wasted in hanging about near the Crooked Dice stand.
-
I fancied giving it a go, but it was always busy whenever I was anywhere near. [snip]
I've edited that line for you. ;D

glad you enjoyed playing on it! Think I remember your game (but its all a bit of a blur to be honest) Slow start to try and clear some undead out of the way, quick realisation that in that way the gang would get munched and then a fast sprint across the middle of the board? Apologies if I'm wrong :)
I think I would have done Mister Bonds tactic, Grab a car and drive it straight up and through Crooked Towers window!
:D Not the bubble car then? I'd have suggested the Mini but don't reckon that one works (definately my favourite moveable terrain peice on the board (although the whole damn thing is awesome!)

Deathjester - you didn't have Deathjester Jnr with you to ensuring rolling a six everytime! Great to see you on Saturday though. And glad everyone enjoyed the boards and their games :)
