Yup, I got distracted again after seeing and buying this chap on ebay
(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Giant/100_0832.jpg)
Who some of you may recognise as one of the Ferocious Ogre variants that was part of the 54mm range of plastic Fighting Fantasy miniatures produced many moons ago in the hallowed 80's.
Some of you (including me) may know him better from this pic taken from the Warhammer Fantasy Battle 3rd ed. rule book -
(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Giant/WFBGiant.jpg)
... which is how I intend on painting him up and possibly recreating the titanic battle surging around his feet, having been inspired by the exploits of the Eternal Private (http://theprivateseternal.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/elven-elites-protect-their-general-part.html/Eternal Private)
To add even more tension, excitement and nailbiting, edge of the seat-ness to the whole affair, I have been challenged by fellow LAFer Phreedh to a race, as he paints his own ogre/giant variant.
And yet there's more - Erny has also taken up the challenge in what is now a frenetic three way contest for interwebz glory!
I've stocked up on orange paint, found my biggest brush and am ready to do battle >:D
Here's my progress so far - clean up and sculpting (if my rudimentary efforts can be thus described) of new toes and bits I sliced a bit too much off of whilst removing the mahoosive mold line that ran right round the mini, which is made of that slightly bendy plastic that doesn't file down well at all.
Thanks to Erny for the great tip of heating a pin to melt away the mold line - one I'll have to remember if presented with the same problem in the future.
New hair extensions to blend in the join at the neck
(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Giant/100_0868.jpg)
New toes - the old ones were very low on detail. Mine aren't particularly brilliant but I'm quite happy with my first attempt at fashioning something other than sandbags out of putty!
I'd like to add some more definition to the hands and stop up the weapon slot in his lower hand - then it'll undercoat and base coat time...

Pretty cool looks like a big fellow as well.
-
Is that an old Bob Olley job?
-
Yup, he's a big 'un!
Not sure who sculpted them Fram - here's the SOL entry though -

Crap... I'm getting left behind on this one allready! When will I learn to keep my yap shut. Have you really finished your 4A figs allready or did you go straight for the prize? =D I think I'm putting my dwarfs to the side for a while and focus on this chap.
-
Love it! Always remember that pic and have always wondered where the figure is from.
Awesome!
-
Cheers Rob - should be great fun to paint.

Well I do have a score to settle! lol

Check my other post here... >:D

He is VERY COOL...perhaps no longer state of the art, but very cool nonetheless. I love the face & the Prince Valiant style coif. He should fit in nicely with your Orc's Drift minis. EXCELLENT FIND!
As far as painting order goes: screw the other stuff & full speed ahead on this Beasty.
-
This guy is cool!
-
I have a bag with some of these hid some place.Looking forward to seeing the finished piece.
-
I did one of these ages ago replacing the club with a model of a tree, it seemed to make it more believable as a giant in 25mm. They also used to do 54mm Orcs two of which made a good addition to my 25mm fantasy army as Trolls. One was waving a morning star so I put a 25mm casuality on the base as if it had been hit by the flailing morning star.
-
I've been fiddling with mine tonight... a little more detailing and we're good to go!

Those are pretty damn good given their age and the level of plastics technology at the time.
I love what you guys are doing with them.
Keep us posted on the 'race'....
-
WOW, I've got that old mini and all the paint it peeling off!!!
But it's a classic!
-
Ta muchly all!
Deafnala - the big fella has definitely barged his way to the front of the queue.
Andy - you wouldn't have a spare one that looks like this by any chance? :D
(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Giant/cyclops.png)
I know what you mean Hasbeen - a giant stone axe seems a bit far out - but hey what can you do - it's in the rulebook! ;)
I've never seen the actual Orc minis - got any pics?
Mason - yep, they look pretty good from the front. But just look at the side view of his hand - where's the fingers gone? :o
Binman - don't tell me that ours will suffer the same fate! This bendy plastic has me a little nervous as to how long the paint will stick...
Phreedh - I thought rude thoughts when I first saw your additions, but then realised you might be taking inspiration from Scandinavian folklore.
So do we have a Jotnar in the making or is he just blessed in the trouser snake department? ;)
-

They do call him Max Girth. Don't want to be on the receiving end of THAT stick!
Nah, I just had a clump of GS left over (as always) so I did a temporary schlong (as always).
Have another look in the book btw. There's a shot with a third giant too... =P The large "every gamer's dream" on the right hand page.
-
Oh aye yeah - spotted him! He must be the third ogre variant you can see on the SOL page.
They do call him Max Girth.
And I thought maybe you were being all cultural and stuff lol
-
I've got one of the orcs, btw... I'll post a pic when I have the opportunity. I used to have two, but sold off the other one as it was too civilized looking to pass as a 28mm troll.
-
Binman - don't tell me that ours will suffer the same fate! This bendy plastic has me a little nervous as to how long the paint will stick...
I guess I never washed mine, I believe if you washing in washing uop liquid it takes of the "slime".....
-
No Ogre's in the batch I have sorry. Will have to dig them out.
-
Not too late to jump on the band wagon I hope? I do have two.

Oh these are just too cool. :(
-

Agreed! I want one!

Adam, are you still talking about giants or have we moved on to something completely different?! o_o
I primed mine (giant!) tonight. I doubt I'll get around to slap any paint on it soon though. I've been thinking about what colour to use and I have an ancient bottle of Swamp Brown that I never really got much use out of. Maybe that could work?
Glad to see you're in on it, Erny! Hope to see both of yours finished before Steve and I get our arses in gear. =D
-
Well I've just resculpted his left hand after giving him mahoosive banana fingers last night >:(
They're pretty rough but I think they'll do - might see about putting on a little undercoat tonight as well...
Must admit I'm getting a little nervous about emulating the day-glo orange paint job he has in the rulebook lol
Bon chance one and all :D
-
Well I've just resculpted his left hand after giving him mahoosive banana fingers last night >:(
Decided to not change anything with putty. Well, except for filling the hole in his right hand and filling in the neck gap and adding a little definition to his hair. I left the horrible hands and feet alone, for instance.
Covered his upper body and face with the base colour yesterday. Took a while, there's a lot of body to cover! =)
-
I hope to catch up tonight - got hold of a set of the old citadel inks so I'm thinking lots of washes to make the orange skin tone look vaguely naturalistic.
-
Look what I've got... :D

Sorry lads but I think that means I win!
I was worried that my struggle with bendy plastic, heavy eyelids (fell asleep at the painting desk at least once this week but managed to keep my face out of the paint pallete somehow!) and my inadequacies in sculpting hands and feet would get the better of me, but somehow, Interwebz glory is mine!
As you can see I've gone for the colour scheme straight out of the WFB 3rd ed. rule book.
Here's a little scene some of you might just about recognise...
Its about the nearest I can get to the original pic with the minis and scenery in my collection
(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/100_0878_zps0f7c8b57.jpg)
And a Goblin's eye view to finish
(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/100_0877_zpsaab07808.jpg)
-
Very nice WIP Steve, keep at it for a few more weeks and you might get there. ;) lol
Joking aside - well done! A well deserved win! Hands look just fine and I'm really blown away by that group shot. Very much in the spirit of the 3rd edt rule book!
Mine is still languishing in post-wash land. =/
Do you want the orc/troll I posted? He's yours if you paint him up. No weapons for him though. Consider it your prize. =)
-
Ha, ha, nice try mate! lol
I certainly wasn't expecting any prizes (apart from a certain degree of self-satisfaction :D ;)) but that would be most generous of you sir - I was wondering what to paint next, and 54mm scale is certainly quite pleasantly uncomplicated!
I look forward to seeing your big guy painted up - if that doesn't sound a little wrong...
-
Glorious, and disturbing :/
It's like pretending that someone elses ugly child is pretty. But still, good job on this one!
And prheed losing was the icing on the cake lol
-
Great job, Thatman!
:-*
A wonderful outcome with a slightly awkward-looking but classic mini!
He looks just wonderful and that scene that you have set up brings back some memories.
Thanks must be due, as I feel 12 all over again!
Great job, looking forward to seeing how the others come out....when you get around to finishing them, of course.
;)
-
Rather nice stuff! Very in keeping with the original!!!
-
As I wrote on your blog, a striking homage and (furthermore) unequivocal proof that you are barking mad.
-

thanks Silver - spot on, on both counts! lol
Thanks Mason and Rob - glad you enjoyed this little ramble down memory lane too.
Cheers Funghy - strange that I don't feel mad but when you look at the evidence... ;D
-
That is one BIG DUDE! Until the Group Photo, I did realize just how big he was...& still is. He certainly did paint up TERRIFIC...VERY WELL DONE!
-
thanks Silver - spot on, on both counts! lol
I do hope that this does spur the good mr Phreed to paint some more citadel goodies though :) And you of course. This forum has way to few updates on that subject (I count to 4-5 regular contributors) :/
-
Thanks Deafnala - quite nice painting something that isn't small and fiddly for a change.
Silversixx - I do know he's also working on his Doom Forgers Bloodbowl team :-* - probably distracting the poor chap from his giant!
As for myself - must try harder! I do have some Slann and more Amazons on the painting table at the moment if that helps... :D
-

Indeed they are, I'm hoping to finish Puggy Baconbreath tonight... and then on with the other players. The giant is put on hold for the moment, I tried getting some paint on him the last few days but there's no joy in it (and the result is crap looking) so I'm putting him on hold for now.
-
I can't find my big guy but I'm sure he had two weapons, with both hands on the ground.... is there a listing any where?
-
Is he one of these Adam?
http://www.solegends.com/citfightfant/fly8505bf-ff9-100.htm
Phreedh - I smeeeellll Bacon! Looking forward to seeing the little fella 8)
-
Yeah that's the one, though possibly not the head.....
