Title: Benbow's Barbarians (New Horses, now with riders ...! Update 19.11.17 p12)
Post by: Admiral Benbow on 26 October 2012, 08:03:48 PM
Many years ago I met a guy at a convention who fielded a Warhammer chaos army using barbarians, mainly from the Copplestone line. I was absolutely impressed by Alex' army and wanted to create my own, so started collecting barbarian miniatures (amongst many others, of course!). The years went by, and when we met once a year, I told Alex that I would start soon ... Well, now the time has come at least, but I have agreed with myself that a warband will do; don't know yet how big it will be in the end, so we'll see.

The miniatures will be mainly from the great Copplestone range plus a couple of convenient more modern ones. Whenever possible I will replace the rather bulky weapons of the Copplestone guys with more realistic ones, and will include the one or other conversion and vignette. I don't take this project too serious but like to focus on some more whimsy aspects of these folks ... So, on to the pics with ...

Queen Caitriona the Red

Well, she is the Queen of the Wild Sons, and actually deciding all important issues, BUT as we all know, a proper barbarian tribe must be lead by a man, a real man like ...

Connor the Egregious, Highking of the Glorious, Guardian of the Realm, the Exterminator well, you know what I mean ...

... and his bodyguards:

To be continued ...

What is it with barbarians that I like so much? Can't do anything wrong with them, especially such nicely painted ones. I love all of them. Though Thrud might be my favourite (for old times sake). Cool minis.  :-*

It's not settled yet, but definitely some of Tre Manor's work for Reaper, some Keltos minis, Target Games, Citadel early barbarians, Kev White's Harlequin goodies, some Confrontation Kelts etc. Yes, they have slightly different "scales", but that's only realistic. The basing will keep them together, and my horde will deliberately be populated with some giants and half-giants ... ;D

Is Thrudella going to be making an appearance?  :o

Err, no. She actually once lived with the horde for some months, but she was always bitching with the Queen about the right slenderness ratio, so she was kicked out!  :D  (I don't really like that mini ...)

Great! (I particularly like the "nip-slip" on Queen Caitriona...!)  :o

Oh, did you notice that ...  8)

Lovely painting Admiral, very 'gnarly' which suits these figures to a tea,and the giant Catamount/Puma/Lion is fantastic! Looking forward to more :)

That lioness is a fantastic sculpt and comes from Ral Partha's 11-413 Displacer Beast (new version):

I particularly like the tiger, looks like it stepped out of a Vallejo painting! :o

Yes, the inspiration is indeed coming from something like that. I'm no great friend of Vallejo's work, don't like his painting style, but Frazetta, Joe Jusko and Ken Kelly, these are my heroic fantasy style painters of choice. The colour choice for the lioness and her eyes in particular were directly inspired by this painting:

Muchas gracias for all your nice comments, fellows!

Hmm i wonder if the really would like that!!! Put him between two armies and he charge the nearest figures, doesn´t matter which army :)

A company called Dark horse (not the same as the publishing company) made Groo figures, but they arn´t in business any more, sadly because i would love to have some....

Two new warriors: The brothers Grim

The first one is straightforward without any alterations, the second one with the two swords had a bow on his back originally. I didn't like this, cut it away and added a bit of fur instead. The Killer-Bunny-head on the shield is an Andrea miniatures dry-rub transfer I had in my spares; I just painted it over.

I'm currently working on a multi-base for my first set of warriors, and it will be magnetic to hold the miniatures better when carrying them around. It isn't that hard to build, and you'll see a wip-pic next time.

The original barbarian range was sculpted by Mark Copplestone when he was working for Grenadier UK many years ago. The range was part of the "Fantasy Warriors" line and is still available today in it's intirety by Mirliton, an italian company:

The "Not Thrudd" miniature is one of the five incarnations Citadel miniatures released 1984-1987 as limited editions.

A day for the hobby - so I could be creativ and worked on some forthcoming projects for the barbarians.

This will be the mount for some clan-chief. I absolutely loved that beast's body, but hated the head, so something else had to be found. I think this combination is a good solution. Like to recognize the parts used ...?  8)

The army standard-bearer and his mount has been finished for a looong time, but I wasn't happy with the standard itself, so today I created a new one:

Looks simple, but was a lot of work. On to painting now ...

Very cool. What was the original miniature of that bull/ox thing? It looks really awesome.

It's a 15mm miniature from the Demonworld range, now distributed by Ral Partha Europe (4516 Gar’ydwedd with Archer crew). It was sculpted by Werner Klocke, and he did a masterly job with the beast's body. But the head, I don't know why, came out like a caricature from the Muppet show and you can see it here in all it's ugliness:

I choose to replace it with an ace monster head sculpt by Nick Bibby, the Great Spined Dragon (as the well-informed jimbibbly already recognized!), and used only one of the four horns from the Demonworld kit. I like the outcome very much. And no, I didn't sacrifice a Great Spined Dragon, I built a mould many years ago from my original casting and casted a couple for forthcoming conversions.

Btw, I have a spare blister of that Gar’ydwedd-bull beast which I don't need, so if someone would be interested in a bargain, just drop me a pm.

That is a wonderful conversion, and I agree that the original head is not as great as the rest.

Tempted with the beastie, but I know it would just sit there for ages.... :(

Better to go to someone who will use it AND post a pic of the thing finished!

Another two for the weekend ... Axe-wielding maniacs

No great changes on these, just replaced one axe with a more realistic looking one from the spares.

That's it for the first warband. They will all go to one magnetized skirmish-tray. I stole the idea shamelessly from the Captain and added the magnetic factor ...  :D

This is the construction before landscaping:

Bottom level is 1mm plasticard, second level self-adhesive 1,5mm magnetic sheet, third level 1mm plasticard again with all the cutouts for the miniature bases. This last one was glued on with contact adhesive. Each sheet was slightly smaller than the one underneath to get a nice graduation. After filling the base with spackle compound this treatment will let the base look thinner than it is.  8)

A group shot must wait a little as I plan to show this gang in a small competition ...

Next installment, the barbarian standard bearer - Stealcruncher - abandon all hope ...

One of my favourite conversions ever, long time finished, but struggled with the standard. Made this new one now, it worked at least.

If you're a real barbarian, you need to keep all your household stuff with you, and your arsenal, of course. This man can choose from his great collection of weaponry, one for every occasion, so to say ... :D One longsword, a shortsword, two good daggers, a shield, bow and quivers and three axes. I really wanted to go to town here ...   8)

First a big thanks to all for your very nice comments!

The beast conversion was based indeed on two main components: a resin body from an "Orc carnosaur" by Grendel's Leviathan range, still available today from Scotiagrendel.com, and a head from this guy:

This is the 1/6 scale "Neil Andrythal" by Mark Newman from Newmanoid Models. Of course I didn't buy this really expensive collector's kit and used the head for a conversion, but a friend of mine had it years ago and had a mould built for some castings of the head just for conversions; luckily I've got one.
 :)

By the way, I just changed the pics of the miniature for a better quality set, in case you're wondering ...

Many years ago I bought six nicely painted Grenadier barbarians from Dave Thomas at a game show. They were not too costly and were painted in a high standard I couldn't achieve in those days. I don't know who was the painter, maybe someone will recognize them now. So they were re-based, painted over a bit here and there and their skin tone adjusted to my existing horde; here they are:

As with my previous batch of barbarians I wanted to create a scenic movement tray, magnetised and serving as a small vignette in my display cabinet. It was built in three layers as you can read about some posts back, painted, flocked and detailed:

And this is the complete scene: War Council at Skull Spire

The large skull is from Fantasy Warriors Undead Catapult set 9013, there is a pic here http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Grand_Pack_Line_%28Fantasy_Warriors%29#9202_Undead_Catapult_with_Skulls_.26_Crew (http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Grand_Pack_Line_%28Fantasy_Warriors%29#9202_Undead_Catapult_with_Skulls_.26_Crew)

The skeletal warrior is a chopped apart Ral Partha undead rider miniature, don't know which one exactly.

Awesome stuff. Love that base you made for them. I have that shaman, I must get around to painting it. I sold off all my old stuff about four years ago and that was one of the few things I kept. Can you purchase that one anywhere nowadays?

You can find informations about availability of old Grenadier stuff on page 4 of this thread. They appear quite regularly on Ebay, too.

I remember WHite Dwarf No.100 which had a special just about your work. It said something along the line of "the best painter in Germany". I remember wondering what kind of demi-god you would have to be. Actually meeting you and finding out you're "just a nice person" makes these things even better. To this day I never understood how you make especially your animal models look so naturally. Very impressed with everything I see here.

Well Christian, after struggling long and hard I decided to go for both! In a limited way at least.

It's some months until the last update, and I had other projects in between, but there was always the plan to continue this thread. As we play more and more SAGA games lately, this was the perfect excuse to order some of the beautiful Copplestone 18mm barbarians and finish them for a starter SAGA army (will play them with the Norman battleboard or something like this). And of course they will be featured here, so some pics of my first finished horses; riders are still on the workbench but will follow shortly.

Last picture shows the undercoating steps on the rider: brush-painted light ochre enamel undercoat, liberally washed with dark brown inks. Saves a lot of time with all the flesh parts and works good as a warm base tone on the horses too.

Yes, that's exactly the reason. This way I can paint all the attached miniatures at once. It works good with thoose 18mm figs, I won't do it with 28mm.

Thanks all for your nice comments! Now the single miniatures as promised. I choose to base them magnetized, so the miniatures are glued to 0,5 mm plasticard, this is then fixed to 1 mm self-adhesive magnetic foil. So the whole army can be securely stored in a single sheet metal cookie box.

Next batch of horses finished. The more I paint them, the more I like to paint horses at all. Before I started this time, I did a short internet survey about horse colours and found plenty of reference. Half a dozen of horses colour plates were copied and printed out for my painting reference book (one of some notebooks I kept through the years for ideas, concepts, sculpting and painting references). Now my setup for painting horses looks like this:

For the 7 new horses I wanted to concentrate on greys, creams, champagnes, a pinto (6) and an appaloosa (7):

Apart from getting many colour variations for my barbarian horses, I wanted some more variety besides the two standard types. Looking at the front legs, you'll see variant A on the first picture, and variant B on the second. I took one each of both variants, cut them through behind the saddle strap and glued them together again interchanged. This will lead to no.2 and no.7. I like the latter one most as it's a dynamic pose, and so easy to do. But I tried to go even further and changed the head and neck position on a variant A model by first removing the reins completely with a modelling knife, then cutting half through the neck behind the head and between neck and body. Parts were then repositioned, drilled, pinned and slightly resculpted after the glue had dried. That resulted in the most dynamic pose of all, but was a bit more work: no.1. I like it even more from the other side:

When the riders are finished, no.1 will get new reins from painted paper, of course. For the next batch of horses I will concentrate on chestnuts and bays. I learned a lot about horse colours and genetics and had great fun doing it!

Back after nearly three years. Unbelievable - time flies ... Many projects in between, mostly finished.  :D
Inspired not least because of Captain Blood's titchy little barbarians, it was the right time to finish the riders for my unruly little horses. They had been prepared at the time when the horses were published but waited for paint since then. At that scale it's nearly unbelievble how much character Marc Copplestone sculpted into every single miniature and I really hope he will continue the range some day. As I wanted to have more variety amongst the troop, I spend them new weapons ...

I have not been completely idle with this 18mm project in the last years and browsed through my collection for some suitable foes for the barbarian riders. I came up with these very nice Tom Meier sculpted "giants" he did for Ral Partha. They are too small for 28mm giants, but absolutely great for this scale:

Must resist getting cavalry as well... I will not succumb  o_o

Six of the seven new riders have new weapons I chose from my spares of Demonworld 15 mm weapons. Got them from Werner Klocke many years ago. They are a bit over the top scalewise, but just work with the barbarians, I think. So the conversion work was just a bit of cutting, pinning and glueing the new pieces to the minis, not really complicated.

You need the cavalry, Richard. It would be tactically unwise not to field cavalry and let the poor foot do all the work ...  :D
