Here's a sunmary of the amazing story: http://www.emdenmen.com/geschichte.html (http://www.emdenmen.com/geschichte.html)

A fascinating story, the Arab leg of which I always planned to make into a game.
But never did.
-
The one that always amused me was the ponderously slow (unseaworthy) ship that saw the Emden, and by the time the Enden boarding party arrived the crew were lined up neatly on deck waiting with their suitcases packed.
-
The Emden story and the crew's return to Germany has been one of my all-time favourite sagas since I was a kid. There are some excellent books available.
If you're ever visiting Sydney, go to Hyde Park. One of the Emden's guns was salvaged and has been installed there, pointing up Oxford St.
My favourite story is the Emden radio operators picking up an "open" (not encrypted) radio broadcast message asking "Emden. Where are you?". They wisely decided not to reply.
Hope they get Lauterbach right. A lager than life character.

Wow! this looks GOOD! Can´t wait to see this movie :o
-
For the German speaking members who wants to get their sons into that topic have a look at this book:
Wüstenmatrosen von Olaf Fritsche
http://www.fantasyguide.de/7785.0.html (http://www.fantasyguide.de/7785.0.html)
The story is about Jan Petersen from Kiel signing on for duty on the Emden...

Thanks for this great news, can't wait.
Somewhere back in this topic you will find some information about the crew.
Cheers,
Helen

Funny coincidence as the Landungstrupp of the Emden was on my list to get done as miniatures. Maybe it would have gotten me into an IP-case with this movie coming up. lol
Although I'm really looking forward to it, I'm a little bit worried about the compulsory love story. :? (And Ken Duken and Felicitas Woll not being particular favourites of me doesn't help my worries either but we'll see. ;))
There's also a very nice documentary available titled 'Unter kaiserlicher Flagge: Karawane der Matrosen' (first part, a second one is titled 'Hetzjagd vor Kap Hoorn' and deals with a different ship), the English title seems to be 'Hunt the Kaiser's Cruisers'.

Sculpt the miniatures anyway - most films (other than Star Wars) disappear within a year. And an IP case would be difficult if you work from original pictures.
You could also argue that you are making them as a commemorative/memorial item.
-
The IP-case is just a joke. I'd have gone for historical accurateness anyway. ;)
But as usual, too many ideas, too little time. ;D

Markus,
Dont stray away. Think:
I must do German Police
I must do German Police
I must do German Police...
;)
-
It is a great story. I will go and see this movie.

No worries. ;) I'll stick to the RJW and the Freikorps era for the foreseeable future.

Plenty of time: aim for a release date 2014 to get the centenary.

Naa, I'm not good at this timing stuff, you see... the RJW six years to late and the Freikorps seven years too soon. :D

......
Please Maichus. Let my dreams come true.
-
Wow, this actually looks good. I always thought this epic story would be a great film, just never thought someone would make it.
-
I would like to hear Your oppinion about it, before or after You have seen it.
I have seen only the trailer and have not Yet decided if I like the style...
I am certainly going to watch it since I want to know how Germans like to portray themselves historically.
So I thought - how about some external input ;)
-
I read a review of the film in a local newspaper this week and it said it had big names as lead actors, but overall rather mediocre.
-
Wow, I wasn't fast enough
here in the land of poets and thinkers, the movie was shown in a few cinemas starting with the release date, made the first weekend and then completely disappeared.
Anyway, the marketing concept appears to have involved a twofold operation, with a longer and "uncut" version to be shown on TV, so lookout for "Die Männer der Emden" in future programmes. I could imagine there will be an english speaking version at least on DVD.
-
Except for details I think the trailer just showed me the whole movie!
