Hi Everyone,
I have decided to have ago At sculpting a Beast Of Malal for Oldhammer
I used the concept sketch by Tony Ackland as a starting point.
I have started using mix off Magic sculpt with a little bit of green stuff Kneadatite :)
Its only A work in progress at the minute, I have still got the Eyes and arms to do. I might do some extra head variants and maybe a set of wings Huh?
What do you think so far?
Here is the original sketch by Tony Ackland,

uhmmm
Nothing showing?

Very nice! The final beast will be great! :-*

Pretty good so far, but I think the body needs a little more texture. It's too smooth looking.
Also, the legs could be a little less mirrored in position. Would look better with one more in front of the other. Not so much that the models looks like it's walking or running, but judging by the concept art the left leg should be a bit more forward to support the weight of the body leaning forward and reaching out with one arm.
What size is this? I'm assuming it's matching the 80s greater deamons in size?
Beak looks too clean too btw, missing the teeth and the fleshy parts in the corner of the "mouth".

I'll see what I can do about the pose. The head still needs work, its not finished yet.
He is about 30mm tall, smaller than a greater demon.
Thanks for the feedback, it all helps me to try and improve :)
Thanks
George

Very nice mate. Not heard from you for a while, drop me a pm when you get chance.
Cheers.

So far, I like it. An insect head option may look nice too.
-
Cracking stuff!

Very good 8)
Second the comments from phreedh.

Wow, that's great!!!
-
Very nice indeed - there's potential there to make up a Malal warband - the beast, Kaleb Daark, some beastmen as the Claws of Malal.
Is this a personal sculpt or do you plan to make it more widely available?
-
IIRC correctly, GW couldn't make Malal miniatures as the original designer kept the liscense? I think it's actually 2000AD who hold it, but I'm not certain...
These could be beasts of Lalam!
;)

These could be beasts of Lalam!
lol
Great sculpt, are you going to explore the Malal concept and do some more stuff?
-
The Bird from Hell is an EXCELLENT piece..it looks like something from Colonel Sander's worst nightmare. GREAT WORK!
-
Didn't the other four Chaos gods wish really hard and made Malal disappear? lol
I recall the description in WFRP of Malal. Made him sound worse than the other four altogethe.r
Seriously nice looking start!
-
Thanks everyone :)
I've started a new body what do you think so far?

+1
Looks great!
-
Great stuff. He'd scare the living day lights out of me if I met him down a dark alley.
-
GREAT WORK! That is an UBERCOOL if somewhat scrawny creation...I need one.
-
Good stuff... great as hook horror too.
-
I think it's GREAT, but it would benefit from a slightly shorter and rather beefier neck. If you look at the drawing, the neck is nearly as thick as the diameter of the head.
The head itself looks great as do the new body! I'd gladly buy several once I'm back in black, financially speaking.
-
I think you got it perfectly, you catch up the essence of the beast. Great!
-
Great. The new body looks excellent. :)
There's something throwing me off about the jaw; I don't know what it is. The jaw hinge is in the same position as the drawing, but somehow it seems further forward. (Makes me think of Reginald the bird from Nedroid (http://nedroid.com/)) Maybe if the back of the jaw was bulked out a bit more... but it's not a dealbreaker.
And if I might be so bold, I like it a lot better than Otherworld's DnD-style 'Arnie with a vulture head' hook horror...
-
Yep, prefer this to the otherworld one too. Nice work
-
Thanks for the positive feedback everyone, I never thought he would be this popular :o
I will see about getting him cast up and made available.

I know what you mean, I've still got a little bit to do on the head.
Do you think I should do a few different heads to go with him?
-
I dunno - whatever you want. :) Could look interesting with a head like this (http://images2.fanpop.com/images/photos/7300000/Pumpkinhead-horror-movies-7329639-1680-1050.jpg), or this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/26/Alien_vs._Predator_%282004%29_-_Alien.jpg), or thi- (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1050149)

Argh where delete button?
-
Interesting creature!! Love it!! :-*
-
It's splendid!
If it'll be cast, I'm definitely getting one - always wanted to make a Malal warband for Mordheim.
-
Fantastic piece. Would certainly like to have it for my gaming :-*
