Title: Amazing & Painless - FINISHED! 22.12.13
Post by: Admiral Benbow on 10 February 2013, 09:14:07 PM
When I came out of the cinema after enjoying that grand "Django unchained" I could not stop thinking about the dentist wagon of Dr. King Schultz, and how nice it would be to have my own one for my old west town. I was able to stand up to the temptation for about two weeks, but yesterday I gave in. As I'm working on something else actually, I allowed myself only two days for the main build.  8)

So first step was researching the wagon on the net, and there are indeed some nice pics available:

After studying the pictures, I sketched the model roughly in scale, comparing the horse, the King and the wheels to each other. Counting the planks on the wagon's sides gave me some suggestions about proportions.

Main problem no.1: the wheels. I looked through my lead pile for something that might work, but either found the wheels too large, too small or too less detailed. Then I thought about an old Imex 1/72 kit I had laying around for quite some time and could not even remember why I had bought it anyway (cheap?), but there they were: the exactly fitting wheels, and even two pairs (the rest of the quite shitty kit goes to the bin).

Cabin construction was quite straightforward, no complicated things at all, just exact measuring and cutting of plasticard. I decided to rate the planks 3 mm each, that gave me nice looking proportions compared to the pics.

The wagon's top was a bit more work as it's arched slightly, so I filed and sandpapered it to the correct shape from thick plasticard.

Last work yesterday evening was the upholstered seat and backrest. Sculpting with greenstuff on thin plasticard was fun again. Hardening through the night.

Main problem no.2: who would be Dr. King Schultz himself? Again searching through the lead pile for a suited miniature with conversion potential. Found one of the very nice drivers from the Minden Miniatures sets, and he will be transformed later. Now the miniature served as a dummy to help finding the correct measurements for the seat and footrest. The back of the wagon got his door and hinges.

Now to the tricky part - the undercarriage. I kept it simple as most of it won't even be visible, but the main components needed to have the right proportions to work for the wagon at all. That was mainly trial and error, and a good bucket full of swearing each time another tiny bit shoot out of my tweezers ... >:(

The undercarriage needed about the same time as everything else, but in the end I finished the main construction about an hour ago. Some details will be added, the figure must be sculpted, and, of course, the tooth will be added on top of the roof!  :D

Will be continued when I made some progress ...

 :)

Amazing bit of scratch building there! I'm impressed how close it looks to the real deal, and that you cobbled it together just from some reference pics. Any plans to paint up a DJango to complete the scene?

Do you find it easier to work with styrene over real wood (balsa)?

Well, it depends on the job. Both materials have their qualities, but I find it easier to work with styrene when it comes to small and exactly dimensioned items. I use balsa and other wood for miniature buildings, for example, using the wood grain for effect.

Agree your model is very nice but do hope you will include the tacks that hold the canvas roof in place, maybe just paint them in.  Good job.

Yes, details will be added ...

Unfortunately I have another problem: the wagon represents the original from the film only with the ornamental writing on the sides. The quality and resolution of the internet pics won't let you knock out the background to isolate the slogan and transfer it to transparent decal sheet, so this plan won't work. Handpainting would be possible, but too time-consuming. Any other ideas, chaps?

How about pinching something similar from the net?

Never really used styrene for wood at any size but I see a lot of people doing it. I suppose it's what you're used to  :)

Find a solution for the wagon's ornamental writing: did it myself in good old Corel Draw with some help from the net. It's not 100% the same, but near enough for me:

The background appears white here, but it's transparent. Now I'll buy some transparent decal sheet and then try to print it. Never done this before, so I'm a bit excited about this technique.

Ok, if you painted the wooden sides on the wagon first, is there a way of making your sign into a decal without the white background? and use it that way, im sure I saw a youtube vid somewhere explaining how? then you could hide the sheen of the decal with dullcoat spray.

Would that be an option?

Edit*

Whoops! I see you thought of that, my fault for not reading though all the way.

Well, I'm pretty sure that they will get 28 mm love soon; from sculpting to selling the casted miniatures you'd need some time. I'm looking for Brigade Games eventually who also did the non-Deadwood characters ...

Wonderful build and it will be even better with that sign!

I have three sheets of unused print-your-own-decals for ink jet. No need for those myself as don't have an inkjet printer. Will happily send them to you in case you have use for them? Of course your project would need to stall a bit for waiting those to arrive.

Simply amazing work, I can't wait to see it finished! C'mon, please?

I too use textured styrene for wood.  I first got started because scratch building crates was faster and cheaper than ordering resin ones for too much $ and waiting for them to be shipped.  Also, you can make your own any size you want or need.  I've been playing with some buildings but haven't perfected the process yet.

Still at it though.

Awesome work!

Yes, I'm pretty sure it will be finished eventually, I just can't say when. It's A level time at my school, and I have a real bunch of multi-paged tests laying around here to be revised. AND - I allowed myself to participate in the LPL, so my painting time is already used up.

This is very impressive and highly inspiring too. I think I need some better blades as my plasticard cuts are never as accurate as I'd like. I always end up having to put too much force on the cut and mess up the line.

Well, the trick is to NOT cut through the plasticard! You only need to scribe along your ruler one or two times, then just snap the plastic apart. And don't use a knife or scalpel for cutting but a plasticard scriber from Tamiya for example. This will avoid any burrs along the edges.

The Old West Painting Posse gave me enough stimulus to finish this project. The details of the wagon were added and I sculpted Dr. Schultz himself over the Minden miniatures body, replacing the head with a suitable one from Copplestone's Old West range (Foundry). The tooth is from a small monkey skull (I once met a taxidermist who gave me a bunch of skulls in exchange for a painted miniature ...  8)) and was mounted over a small spring.

After painting and weathering the wagon I painted on a protective coat of matt varnish, using Soluble Matt Varnish by Daler-Rowney. 24 hours later the exciting part of the project started, trying to copy the sign onto the wagon with VBS Transfer Medium. Working very carefully and waiting another 24 hours I was able to remove the paper completely and found a perfectly transfered sign on my wagon! Another layer of varnish enhanced the black letters even more. Very nice product!

Yes, Richard, I would obviously like to create Django himself on horseback, but couldn't find any suitable miniature. Maybe I should have a closer look to the Perry's ACW cavalry, but I don't want to buy a full box for just one or two conversions ... My dream would be a plastic "Old West"-box from the Perrys with figures on foot and riders and a huge amount of equipment!  ;D :o

Thanks all for the nice words - on to the next project!

Yes, I'm sure that would be a massive seller...

As they seem to be reprising some of the Airfix sets of their childhood (Afrika Korps and 8th Army, for instance, AWI continentals and redcoats, and the upcoming ACW artillery set) let's hope it's just a matter of time :)

(And after that, Robin Hood, The Sheriff of Nottingham, Arabs, Foreign Legion, Wagon Train and Tarzan!  ;))

My buddy and I had a discussion on this very topic.  We're surprised some company hasn't come out and produced 12-20 figure "Skirmish" boxes for a variety of skirmish level wargames.  The profits would be less than your typical regiment boxes (and this is likely the reason).  But I'd imagine if a company released quality modular plastics for Old West, Gladiators, etc. they would have the market to themselves.

Absolutely gorgeous work, Michael. Especially the transfer looks perfect to me.  :o
I should consider some use for that...

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year !

Cheers

Looks awesome, especially the transfer. I looked into the VBS medium and then found a video from the folks at Golden. It looks like just about any acrylic medium will work. I'm going to experiment a bit before I try it on something that I have a lot of time invested in.

Well, that shouldn't be a problem, now you've got a complete manual to build one yourself!
